‘NATURE’S OWN CONCERT HALL’
20
MOAB AREA REAL ESTATE MAGAZINE August–September 2021
THIS YEAR'S MOAB MUSIC FESTIVAL WELCOMES WORLD-CLASS MUSICIANS, AS WELL AS SPECIAL GUEST GEORGE TAKEI Written by Sharon Sullivan
W
here else can you hike, raft or take a jet boat to a chamber music concert set in a secluded, stunningly scenic location with the sounds of nature in the background? The annual Moab Music Festival is a one-of-a-kind event which takes place this year from August 30-September 16. Professional musician Michael Barrett was driving to Santa Fe, New Mexico to perform at a chamber music festival after visiting his parents in Logan, Utah when he came through Moab for the first time and was blown away by the scenery. That was 32 years ago He and Leslie Tomkins, co-founders of the Moab Music Festival (MMF), had been talking about starting a music festival somewhere out West – he’s a pianist and conductor, she’s a violist. Both were living in New York City at the time. Two years after Barrett’s initial visit the two musicians returned to Moab to talk with townspeople to see if residents would welcome a multi-day event featuring live chamber, jazz, Latin, and traditional music from around the world. The community said “yes.” A board of directors was pulled together, nonprofit status was obtained, and a year later in 1993, “a modest, amazing, beautiful music festival in Moab,” took place, Barrett recalls. Next year will be the 30th anniversary of the festival whose tagline is “music in concert with the landscape.” Each year, Barrett, who now resides in Moab, and Tomkins, who is based in NYC, invite approximately 40 musicians from around the world to come perform in a variety of small ensembles in mostly outdoor wilderness venues.
‘A MOST EXTRAORDINARY EVENT’

Additional MMF outdoor venues include Red Cliffs Lodge overlooking red rock cliffs alongside the Colorado River, Sorrel River Ranch and Spa, a private home and a ranch. However, the festival is most famous for its wilderness events, such as the Grotto Concerts and Music Hikes. Concertgoers reach the Grotto Concerts via an exciting jet boat ride down the Colorado River, while musicians arrive early in the morning to rehearse. The natural grottos carved from red rock walls provide perfect acoustics. A reception with the musicians takes place after the concert. This year’s Grotto concerts include performances by guitarist Jason Vieaux, violinists Kristin Lee and Ayano Ninomiya; percussionists Andy Akiho and Ian Rosenbaum, soprano Corinne Winters; and pianist composer Michael Brown. Rathin Datta and Alicia Reyes, of Chicago, learned about the MMF from a 2004 New York Times article that referred to it as “nature’s MOAB AREA REAL ESTATE MAGAZINE August–September 2021

own concert hall.” The couple has traveled to many Moab Music Festivals over the years, where they typically attend about a week’s worth of concerts. “To me, the Grotto Concert is the most extraordinary event,” Datta says. “The ravens singing, and the piano playing – it’s extraordinary; it can’t be duplicated anywhere in the world.” The sound of nature accompanying the music, including not only the iconic raven, but also the rustling of leaves, crickets chirping, and whistling thrushes, make the event uniquely beautiful, he says. In addition to a Grotto Concert (there are three from which to choose!), Datta and Reyes will join one of the four popular “Music Hikes” this year. Concertgoers are shuttled to one of several undisclosed locations where a Canyonlands Field Institute naturalist is present to interpret the landscape and lead people on an easy-to-moderate one-mile walk to a secluded canyon – where the acoustics are ideal for listening to live music. Trekkers meet at 8 a.m. More adventurous music lovers may want to consider hopping on one of the two Musical Raft Trips offered – three-day, two-night float trips that include camping, hiking, swimming, good food and “riveting whitewater fun” – as well as daily performances by festival artists. This year, the first trip from August 30-September 1, will take place on the Colorado River through RubyHorsethief and Westwater Canyons; the second raft trip will float the upper San Juan River where passengers will see red rock canyons, petroglyph panels, Ancestral Puebloan ruins, interesting geographic features and desert wildlife along the way. This trip begins with a dinner and night’s stay at a hotel in Bluff. One of the musical raft trips includes daily performances by violinist Cindy Wu and cellist-composer Clancy Newman, while the other trip features violinist Francisco Fullana and cellist Jay Campbell.
‘LOST FREEDOM’ FEATURING GEORGE TAKEI
The mix of genres and composers – including the works of Beethoven and Mozart, as well as young, living composers – are part of what makes this festival appealing to patrons like Datta and Reyes. A “commissioning club” – comprised of festival board members, donors, and other people who love classical music – was launched this year to pay composers to create new pieces specifically for the festival. Composer and violist Kenji Bunch had previously written a meditation after visiting a former Japanese-American internment camp in Idaho. After he performed it at a previous Moab Music Festival, Barrett suggested expanding on that idea. A National Endowment for the Arts grant allowed the MMF to commission Bunch to create a piece based on the writing and speeches of actor and social activist George

Takei, who, with his family, was forced to live in an internment camp during World War II. The piece has relevance to Moab’s own history, as Japanese-Americans were detained during the war in an “isolation camp” at Dalton Wells near Moab. Takei – best known for his role as Lieutenant Sulu in the original Star Trek series – is collaborating with Bunch on the piece, and will narrate “Lost Freedom: A Memory” on September 4 at the Red Cliffs Lodge lawn, overlooking the Colorado River. Bunch’s new work honors the individuals who were unjustly confined during that era. Percussionist/composer Andy Akiho will perform, joined by several other festival musicians. There will also be compositions by confinement camp survivor Paul Chihara. This particular concert is timely, says Barrett, given the recent surge in anti-Asian bias.
Ahh Moab!
FREE CONCERT IN OLD CITY PARK
Grammy-award winning jazz group The Manhattan Transfer will be returning to the Festival to perform in an open-sided pavilion at Sorrel River Ranch and Spa, September 11. Plus, there’s a concert of classical Spanish music at Red Cliffs Lodge, September 5, as well as two benefit concerts held at private residences. And, in addition to all the ticketed events, each year on Labor Day the festival offers a free, kid-friendly community concert at Old City Park – this year on September 6. There, the audience will be treated to percussionist/composer Andy Akiho’s avant-garde 21, guitarist Jason Vieaux playing Pat Metheny’s latest work for solo guitar, and soprano Corinne Winters singing from the American Songbook. The concert in the park is sponsored by Rocky Mountain Power. The festival draws both local residents as well as music lovers from all over the world. “We’ve been around long enough that the word is out how extraordinary this event is,” Barrett says. While there are other outdoor music festivals, the Moab Music Festival is truly unique with its blend of chamber music and scenery that includes Colorado River, snowcapped La Sal Mountains, red rock canyons and Native American history, says Barrett. “We treat the land with respect – the ancient feeling of the place, both human and geological,” he adds. Audience sizes are kept small to provide an intimate experience with the musicians and the venue. “It’s really private and beautiful, and you’re in the landscape,” says Barrett. “We’re marrying astonishing music and the place – they talk to each other.” For tickets or more information visit: moabmusicfest.org or call 435-259-7003. n

SHARING HISTORY'S LOCAL STORIES A RENOVATED MOAB MUSEUM REOPENS WITH NEW STAFF AND FASCINATING EXHIBITS Written by Sharon Sullivan
R Tara Beresh, Curatorial and Collections Manager

MOAB AREA REAL ESTATE MAGAZINE August–September 2021
esponding to community inquiries is one of Tara Beresh’s many responsibilities as the first-ever curatorial and collections manager at Moab Museum. In June, Beresh helped a man who sought information about the venerable Apache Motel he had recently purchased. This summer, she also assisted a National Park Service Ranger with research and with finding photos for an interpretive talk he planned to give.
Moab Museum, at 118 E. Center St., reopened June 1 after being closed for nearly three years for renovation and a redesign of its exhibition space – a closure that was extended due to the pandemic. Staff made good use of that time, however, by expanding its website offerings, conducting hiring, and adopting new “best practices” for running a museum. Operating at a higher level of professional standards opens the door to the sharing of more exhibits from across the nation. “I can contact a curator in Washington DC or Chicago and express interest in curating an exhibit on Native Americans who were in Mill Creek Canyon during ancestral times,” says 37-year-old Beresh. “We now have the potential to borrow artifacts that left our community long ago.” The museum’s fresh interior is a bright, clean, well-lit space. Its open floorplan contrasts with the previously more compartmentalized spaces of the museum. During the construction, a staircase was also relocated to provide additional room, and design elements were incorporated into the walls and elsewhere that give staff the ability to make creative changes to the way items are exhibited in the future. “We think the redesigned space is dynamic and exciting, and we are excited about the possibilities ahead of us,” says community relations officer Mary Langworthy. The museum’s current temporary exhibit “The Transcontinental Railroad” comprises two collections from the Utah Division of Arts and Museums – “A World Transformed: The Transcontinental Railroad in Utah,” and “Through Toil

BARNES PHOTOS, GUIDEBOOKS
Among the museum’s richest collections are the roughly 50,000 photographs taken by the late Fran Barnes – which the museum is in the process of digitizing. Additionally, the museum owns more than 40 guidebooks written by Barnes and his late wife Terby during an era when there were few such publications. The couple traveled extensively, including throughout the Moab region, which they documented from the 1960s through the 1990s. Their daughter Terry Barnes Lewis, of Moab, recalls her parents exploring and mapping the backcountry three or four days a week. “When I was a kid I went out with them a lot. We flew over Canyonlands, did a lot of hiking, a lot of river trips. They were always kind of adventurous.” It wasn’t unusual for Lewis to be scuba diving in Mexico instead of attending school. Lewis supplies Back of Beyond Books in Moab with copies of her parents’ 61 different guidebooks – bookstore owner Andy Nettell has dedicated a section of the shop to Canyon Country Publishing
(Barnes’ publishing company). While her dad would write the books, her mom did essential editing and some writing, as well. As a teen and young woman in her 20s, Lewis created pen and ink illustrations for some of the books. “Outdoor recreation wasn’t a big thing, or the sole economy back then,” says Lewis. “My parents had a huge role in putting Moab on the map recreationally, as well as documenting the old Moab.” Guidebook writers who came along later relied on a lot of the information that the Barneses had gathered and documented, she says. Her parents sometimes worked with wellknown scientists and university professors to create scholarly works about the region’s geology or paleontology. They found dinosaur footprints and bones; plus, her mother retraced and documented the 1859 McComb expedition from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Utah. “I am so appreciative to the museum for taking the time curating all this material – it’s decades’ worth of product,” Lewis says. “A lot of the books are still relevant.”

AN OPEN LETTER To: From: Date: Re:
Our Community Dr. Dylan Cole, Chief Medical Officer August 1, 2021 Ongoing Challenges with COVID-19
I
take a deep breath this morning as I sit down to put these thoughts on paper. To be honest, the last thing I want to do right now is pick up a megaphone and be a spokesperson for challenging information. I did that last year and 2020 was bad enough.
Like you, I hoped we were over the worst of this pandemic and I was ready to get back to normal. Yes, I was paying attention to the scientific discussion about the Delta variant. But it felt so good to take a break from hypervigilance. So, pause for a count of three and understand I am writing in the spirit of solidarity. Breathe, two, three… We are seeing the evolution of the COVID virus in real-time, and the Delta variant is changing our understanding. The science is quickly evolving and the guidance can feel like we are on a roller coaster. I want to relate the facts that we know now. We have faced some challenges at the hospital recently that concern me. Recently, I have cared for individuals sick with COVID who are much younger than I had seen before and who had no underlying medical conditions. These are healthy people from 30 to 55 years old who are very ill. I struggled to find an ICU bed for an intubated patient who needed to transfer to another hospital for a higher level of care than we could provide. I could not find a bed in any of the hospitals that typically accept our transfers. They were all full. Our ER doctors are having the same experience. Unable to transfer patients, our doctors are wondering how we will care for people that are more seriously ill than those we typically care for at our hospital. Not all patients are sick with COVID and there are many factors leading to our present shortage of beds, including a nurse staffing shortage that is worse than we have seen in years.
• The Delta variant is very highly contagious. It is more than twice as contagious as the original strain of COVID-19, comparable to chickenpox according to CDC estimates. That means a single case of infection is likely to spread to an additional 5 to 9 other individuals. • The Delta variant causes more severe illness than the original strain of COVID-19. Recent studies from Singapore, Scotland and Canada suggest hospitalization rates for the Delta variant may be 2 to 5 times higher than the original strain. • Infections among vaccinated persons, while rare, occur more frequently with the Delta variant. Currently, breakthrough infections in vaccinated persons in the U.S. make up about 7% of symptomatic infections. • Vaccinated individuals can spread the infection. A CDC publication, dated July 30, 2021, reported that in a large outbreak in Massachusetts, vaccinated individuals who became infected were just as likely to pass the virus to others as unvaccinated individuals. • Vaccination is highly protective against hospitalization and death. CDC data show that the chance of hospitalization or death from COVID is 25 times lower among vaccinated individuals than unvaccinated. Over 97% of hospitalizations are occurring among unvaccinated individuals. • Available vaccines are safe and effective. Rare side effects can occur as with any medication. However, the benefits far outweigh the risks. Taking all these facts into account, here is what it means to me: It is more important than ever that we do what we can to protect ourselves and vulnerable individuals in our community. Knowing that the vaccine protects us from serious illness is reassuring, though it may not entirely prevent us from passing an asymptomatic infection to someone more vulnerable. If you are not yet vaccinated, please give a second thought to doing so, to keep yourself and your loved ones healthy and to stop the chain of transmission that leads to additional death. I encourage us all to consider putting our masks back on when indoors in public and to take those physical distancing precautions that have been shown to be effective. I am hopeful that we will continue to pull together as a community as we enter our fall tourism season, our kids go back to school, and we spend more time indoors as the weather cools.
The trend in COVID cases and hospital admissions is alarming. Nationwide, the number of daily new cases has increased more than tenfold since mid-June. New daily hospitalizations are on a steep climb as well, up 4 times the rate from late June. And the reason for the sudden shift is the Delta variant.
When I see young and healthy people becoming seriously ill with COVID, it makes me concerned for our families, our friends and our community. I encourage each of us to take any and all steps to keep each other healthy and thriving – including masking and social distancing indoors and getting vaccinated when possible.
Let me do my best to share some facts which are up-to-date and accurate as of August 1, 2021:
We are in this together. Thank you, Moab!
