Serving

Moab

After getting its start as an early agricultural and mining area, Moab is now well known as a gateway to iconic adventure. This visually striking desert region is the place we call home. At Summit Sotheby's International Realty, we don't just sell real estate; we're your neighbors, your fellow adventurers exploring the trails, marveling at sunsets and cherishing every unique quirk that makes Moab enchanting. Our dedication to this town runs deep – whether lending a hand at local events, supporting neighborhood causes, or simply sharing the love for this place, we're here to give back and keep our community thriving. Here at the Moab office of Summit Sotheby's International Realty, real estate provides the means for supporting this community that has embraced and supported us. To continue this chain of support, at the close of every sale our sales associates voluntarily donate a portion of their earnings towards our very own 501(c)(3), "Summit Sotheby's Cares". This program enables us to give back to local non-profits such as the Humane Society of Utah and the Children's Justice Center/Christmas Box House. With donations surpassing $1,900,000 since its inception in 2010, Summit Sotheby's Cares isn't about real estate — it is about social responsibility, gratitude and above all, giving back to our friends and neighbors.

In my 27 years with the Christmas Box International, my biggest life lesson is gratitude. I know first-hand that when you're being raised in care, you're not really grateful at the time. It's easy to think that nobody is there for you. Now, when I look back at my experience, I think there were so many people that touched my life. This is what I share with our 8–10 year olds who are really struggling: know that there are people there for you. Celeste Edmunds, Executive Director The Christmas Box International

“From a childcare desert to a childcare oasis” Moab Community Childcare, and its partners, are increasingly solving the community’s demand for daycare

O

Written by Rachel Fixsen | Photos by Murice D. Miller

utside the Moab Community Childcare Center, toddlers play on a gated lawn under leafy trees, accompanied by daycare staff. The center is housed in Grace Lutheran Church where normal services are held only on alternate weekends. Pews are pushed against one wall and the space is divided by a temporary gate. Toddlers eat snacks in highchairs on one side. Infants nap on the other. Small, black, pop-up tents block the light and offer a cozy enclosure for babies to get some sleep, even while older kids are playing nearby. Several adults supervise the gaggle of children: holding hands, wiping faces, and soothing fussy or tired moods.

The center opened last summer and offers 15 spots for kids aged 3 months to 3 years. Daycare is an urgent need in the Moab area: according to a 2020 report from the Utah Department of Workforce Services. At the time, Grand County needed daycare for 465 children under 6. There was capacity for only 174. Concerned community members had been aware of this need for years and, in 2017, established Moab Community Childcare (MCC) as a nonprofit. Over the past couple of years, the organization has gained momentum and has added over 40 daycare

14

spots for families in the Moab area, both through opening its own center and by supporting other area providers through its “Helping Hands” program. MCC Board Chair Rob Walker said he hopes the organization can help transform Grand County from a “childcare desert into a childcare oasis,” and serve as a template for other communities with similar needs. “We can solve this,” Walker said of the childcare gap. “It will require maintenance, but we can be one of the best examples of having childcare anywhere.”

MOAB AREA REAL ESTATE MAGAZINE December 2023–February 2024

The seeds of a solution

Grand County resident Audrey Graham has worked in the field of early childhood development for decades. She visits clients in their homes, giving her insight into the needs and struggles of families with children. By the mid 2010s, Graham had growing concerns about the lack of childcare availability in the area. She met some families where children as young as 9 or 10 years old were caring for their infant siblings. “I was very concerned about what parents were being forced to do to be able to work,” Graham says. “Infants need more care than what a child that age could give them.” At the same time, she knew that most families couldn’t afford for a parent to forego income and stay home. Graham gathered other concerned community members, some of whom are still on MCC’s current board, such as Tess Barger, director of client services at Seekhaven Family Crisis and Resource Center. The group registered as a 501c3 and began researching how they could help provide more quality childcare, meeting with existing providers to ask what was needed, and what would help the most. MCC’s goal was to help families in need of childcare, not to compete with local daycares. “We wanted to make sure we weren’t going to step on anyone’s toes or take away anyone’s business,” Graham says. Local daycare providers told MCC that they needed more licensed caretakers and locations for babies from birth to 2 years old. They also needed a support system. “It became clear that home daycare providers didn’t necessarily need more money. What they needed was a break or a way to take breaks,” Graham says. They needed to know they could take sick days or a vacation without leaving families in a desperate position. That’s how MCC came up with its Helping Hands program. The nonprofit hires daycare staff who regularly visit area daycares, getting to know the kids and their routines and becoming familiar faces. They can then fill in as substitutes or extra staff for those partner providers when needed. MCC uses its funds to pay those staff competitive wages (typically $22-$24 per hour, according to the group’s impact report for the first half of 2023). Partner providers reimburse MCC for Helping Hands hours at $15 per hour. MCC relies on grants and other funding sources to pay the difference. As MCC was developing the Helping Hands system, it was looking for ways to open its own daycare center, one that would cover the birth to 2-year-old age range. One substantial obstacle was finding a location. Group members calculated expenses and realized that the costs

of having a building would make it impossible to pay caregivers a living wage. So, they started asking around the community about sharing or leasing a space. “One of the things we thought about were churches,” Graham says. MCC presented their ideas to the Grand County Faith Based Coalition and a representative of Grace Lutheran Church came forward. The two organizations drafted an agreement: MCC provides maintenance, pays for utilities, leaves the space ready for services on Sundays, and has free use of the building during the week. MCC was searching for a director and gathering childcare equipment and supplies when the COVID-19 pandemic put everything on hold. Businesses, schools, government activities and churches were suspended or closed. The future was uncertain for everyone.

“We had been working at it and putting a lot of time and effort into it, but really got deadended,” Graham says. While progress on MCC was on hold, Graham continued stockpiling daycare equipment and concentrated on another nonprofit she was deeply involved with: the Moab Area Community Land Trust (MLCLT), which aims to address affordable housing, another critical community need. It was through the MACLT board that Graham met Rob Walker, who was relatively new to town and was looking for a way to contribute to the community.

Gaining momentum

Walker retired early from a career in investment strategy in New York City. He moved to Moab with the intention of using his skills and resources to contribute in a meaningful way to his chosen community. MCC was a “shovel-ready” project that needed focused attention to get it moving again; Walker took it on.

16

MOAB AREA REAL ESTATE MAGAZINE December 2023–February 2024

“He’s (like) a dog with a bone,” Graham says of Walker. “We’re so lucky to have someone who’s so capable and who has the time and is so willing to do it.” Walker was part of early meetings with local daycare providers and with the Grand County Economic Development Department which considers adequate childcare a critical need for a resilient local economy. As MCC’s approach began to take shape, Walker was looking for funding. “We got two big grants early on that really set the tone,” he says. Ironically, the same event that had stopped MCC in its tracks in 2020 helped fuel it later on. The group qualified for a federal Childcare Stabilization grant that was included in the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act, a package designed to stabilize and stimulate the economy after the shock of pandemic shutdowns. The grant has provided MCC with about $200,000 over the last two years. MCC was also awarded $100,000 through a state grant administered by Grand County.

That financial support helped MCC get a strong start, hiring Helping Hands staff, supporting the opening of a new childcare center at local supplement manufacturer The Synergy Company, and launching its own daycare center, the Moab Community Childcare Center.

Moab Community Childcare Center

Nicole Wilson, director of the Moab Community Childcare Center, moved to Moab in 2012 and taught at Helen M. Knight Elementary School for about eight years. She has personal experience of the difficulties with finding reliable childcare in Moab for her two children and being obliged to put her career on hold while they were growing up. “I was like, ‘I can’t do it anymore. I need something for my brain,’” she says. She saw that the MCC was looking for caregivers for its new childcare center and applied. Wilson liked the idea of being able to socialize with her son, who comes to the center with her, while also making an income and being engaged with something outside her home. “And then this turned into something that was so amazing,” she says of eventually being appointed to be the center’s director. She emphasizes constant communication with parents, using an app called Brightwheel where providers send parents photos and updates on such things as activities, diaper changes, meals and moods. Parents can also message caretakers at any time throughout the day. Aside from the app, the MCC website, moabchildcare.org, has links to information on typical schedules and activities such as free play, walks, naps, and group activities and meal and snack menus. “I’m so big on communication,” Wilson says. “I feel like the only way that these centers can run is if all staff is communicating and parents are communicating -- we’re just all on the same page and I think that’s helped our center really thrive.” “I’m not an app guy, but I do appreciate getting updates,” says Jason Pronovost, whose almost-3-year-old daughter, Seren, attends the Moab Community Childcare Center. He’s grateful Seren has a safe place to learn and socialize. The MCC Center is “overall just a really positive experience, having all those kids to hang out with”, he says. Studies have found that high-quality daycare can benefit children; it can prepare them for school and help them develop social skills. So, in addition to allowing parents to work and earn income, and increasing the labor pool in an area where businesses sometimes struggle to maintain full staffing, good daycare can set kids up for success as they grow.

Helping Hands

Helping Hands staff work with almost every childcare provider in town: Walker said MCC is providing over 600 hours a month of subsidized support to local daycares through the program. Annie Thomas has been the owner of Sego Lily Preschool since 2016 and says Helping Hands has been “fantastic.” Thomas knows a lot about childcare. Her mother ran a preschool and she’s been working in early childhood development for about 25 years. She emphasizes outdoor learning: Sego Lily preschoolers help to grow a garden and interact with chickens, rabbits and goats at Our Village Community Center, the community farm where the preschool is

located. Thomas loves spending time with young children. “They’re so magical at that age,” she says. “They can hold a conversation, but they still kind of live in the magical realm. They’re so beautiful.” At the same time, childcare and education is challenging and expensive: having a licensed facility and qualified teachers costs money. “The hardest thing is making the program affordable and available to people,” Thomas says. Before she took on Sego Lily, when she was looking for childcare for her own son, Thomas was working as a river guide and couldn’t afford to enroll him. She asked

17

if she could volunteer as a care provider in exchange for daycare for her son. She knows that’s not a realistic option for many. When Thomas took over Sego Lily Preschool, she asked local businesses to sponsor scholarships for families who needed them, allowing her to have a sliding-scale fee model. “With Moab Community Childcare, it’s been amazing because now we can pay our teachers a living wage,” Thomas says. Salaries for teachers are the largest expense for her preschool; because of the Helping Hands program, she was able to raise salaries this year.

Room to grow

MCC is proud of the progress it’s made and hopes to keep growing, though one of its funding sources - the Child Care Stabilization grant - is phasing out. The organization can generate about two thirds of its own budget through fees for childcare, according to its impact report. The board hopes to be able to raise more outside funds to cover the last third, so they can keep costs for families low. MCC charges $1,100 per month for infants up to 2 years old, and $925 per month for toddlers between 2 and 3 years old, similar to fee levels across the state. There are federal subsidies available for families who meet income eligibility requirements. They can apply through the Department of Workforce Services, but the nature of income for many workers in Moab’s tourism-based economy makes it hard for them to qualify for the benefits. Fluctuating or seasonal income, income from multiple part-time jobs, self-employment income, and income that is largely composed of cash tips are all hard to fit into the DWS eligibility matrix. Wilson says only two families with kids enrolled at the MCC Center are getting those federal subsidies, though she believes more would qualify based on income. “It’s just been really sad to see people be just kind of defeated,” Wilson says. That obstacle won’t stop MCC from continuing its mission to make quality childcare available and affordable. Right now, the group is planning to open a new childcare center for kids ages 3 to 5 inside Moab Community Church, which is just across the street from Grace Lutheran. Wilson says there’s already a waitlist for when that center opens up. While MCC has made a lot of progress, there’s still a gap between childcare need and availability in the area. Walker said the nonprofit has ideas for future fundraising: for example, local businesses who want their employees to have reliable childcare might be interested in contributing to costs.

18

MOAB AREA REAL ESTATE MAGAZINE December 2023–February 2024

Another idea is to offer short-term childcare for tourists. Rates would be commensurate with what a babysitter might charge—which is more expensive per hour than regular daycare—and visitors could leave their kids with a trusted, licensed caretaker while perhaps enjoying a more challenging hike or bike ride for a day of their vacation. In the meantime, MCC is strategizing to get the most out of the money they have: the Helping Hands program, especially, is cost-efficient, supporting and strengthening the existing childcare network with a relatively small financial boost.

“For the amount of money we’re spending, we’re doing a lot with it,” Walker says. MCC’s impact report estimates that the new full-time childcare spots generated by the group, on which the organization has spent about $80,000, could allow for as much as $1,200,000 in additional earnings among Grand County families. Walker says MCC’s recent progress is thanks to the groundwork laid early on by the nonprofit’s initial organizers. “There were a lot of seeds in the desert,” he says. “When the rain comes, they’re ready to go.” n

FINDING IN NATURE

Canyonlands Field Institute’s Mental Health Hikes are among its many outdoor offerings By Sharon Sullivan

UTDOOR LOVERS KNOW THAT SPENDING TIME IN NATURE FEELS GOOD AND

CAN IMPROVE ONE’S STATE OF MIND. RESEARCH BACKS UP THOSE FINDINGS – THUS, CANYONLANDS FIELD INSTITUTE (CFI), A NONPROFIT PROVIDING OUTDOOR EDUCATION ON THE COLORADO PLATEAU, HAS IMPLEMENTED A NEW PROGRAM CALLED MENTAL

HEALTH HIKES.

From September through January, and March through July, twice a month, CFI educators lead moderate hikes and walks, paired with activities and discussions regarding various tools and practices for healing and promoting mental health. The hikes are designed to be a safe place for community members to enjoy being out in nature, while learning skills to improve or maintain mental, physical and emotional well-being. “We created the program (in July 2022) because we realized that nature had been an important tool for our own mental health journey,” says CFI development associate Alison Anders, who developed the curriculum along with CFI guest lecturer Liz Bercel. According to the American Psychological Association, spending time in nature is linked to cognitive benefits and can improve mood, mental health and emotional well-being. Anders and Bercel create programs based on both research and personal experience. “For me, it’s a no-brainer that nature is good for mental health,” says Bercel, who is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in mental health counseling with a certification in adventure-based therapy. While the Mental Health Hikes are geared toward adults 18 and older, if a parent wanted to bring along their 16-year-old, that would be allowed, says Anders. Participants typically range in age from 20-65, with anywhere from four to thirteen hikers per group. Feedback regarding the events has been “awesome,” she says. “People are excited that these resources are free to the community. We’ve had guest experts such as yoga instructors, artists, and licensed therapists.” MOAB AREA REAL ESTATE MAGAZINE December 2023–February 2024

Hike themes

The holiday season can be hectic and stressful for some people, and so the theme for the December Mental Health Hikes is “rest” – to use as a tool and acknowledging the importance of rest and taking time to heal, Anders says. In January, the focus shifts toward setting goals and developing a growth mindset. “We’ll offer strategies for following through with goals,” Anders says. “As the New Year begins, we’ll be thinking about the future and ways we want to grow and learn.” A theme from a past hike explored people’s relationship to technology and how that affects one’s mental health. Guides encourage participants to take a break from using their mobile phones in order to reap the full benefits of being outside and present in the moment. Water has been a theme, which helped facilitate a discussion about following the path of least resistance. Another topic explored the creative process and its effect on mental health. Bercel recalls a participant who found a “communication and listening” theme to be particularly helpful. “We practiced reflective listening,” she says. “We reflected back (what the person said), as opposed to responding (immediately with our own thoughts) to make sure we were hearing correctly what was being said. There are barriers that can get in the way.” Learning listening skills and understanding communication styles is important, she says. “Our big goal is to provide free resources to the community and a space where people can broach topics, while breaking the stigma of discussing ‘mental health’ challenges,” Bercel says. “Everyone struggles at various times. We don’t want people to feel isolated. These events create a space, and normalize the human experience. Moab is such a beautiful, pristine environment. If people are having a hard time, we want them to know they can go for a walk and use nature as a coping skill.”

36

MOAB AREA REAL ESTATE MAGAZINE December 2023–February 2024

The Mental Health Hikes, which are not considered strenuous, happen twice a month, with the Wednesday event, from 6-8 p.m. being more of a discussion than a walk, especially during the winter when it gets dark earlier. On Wednesdays, the group typically meets at the Moonflower Canyon recreation area, off Kane Creek Road. Participants sit around a campfire, enjoy a hot beverage, and discuss that month’s theme. “Sitting around a campfire and talking is a cool way to connect,” Bercel says. Snacks are provided. For the Sunday Mental Health Hikes, participants meet at 10 a.m. at the CFI office in town, 1320 S. Hwy 191, across from the Lazy Lizard Hostel. Lunch and transportation to the hike site are provided. Bercel describes these hikes as “light walking,” with time for creative activities such as painting, or sculpting with found natural materials, as well as structured conversation, and solo quiet time. The group returns to the CFI office by 5 p.m. Sunday hikes have been organized in La Sal Mountains, Courthouse Wash, the Sand Flats

Recreation Area, and the Middle Earth trail area. People can choose whether or not to participate in any activity and participants agree to keep discussions within the group confidential. That said, there is not a lot of sharing of personal experiences. Anders emphasizes the events are not group therapy sessions, but rather opportunities to share information, participate in thoughtful discussions and engage in physical activities outdoors. “It’s not a space for people to work through trauma,” Anders said. “We need to be careful not to overstep. I’m an outdoor educator, not a mental health professional.”

Outdoor education & adventure

Canyonlands Field Institute was founded in 1984, by Karla VanderZanden and the late Robin Wilson. Its mission continues to provide “quality outdoor education on the Colorado Plateau, to inspire care of wild places, and renew the human spirit.”

CFI hosts school and youth groups, summer camps, professional development apprenticeships, adult adventure seminars, and private group trips. Programs include river-running, hiking, educational retreats and seminars. The CFI field camp is located in Professor Valley, where there is permaculture-inspired landscaping, pollinator gardens and a perennial creek. Adult programs involve learning about local flora and fauna, archaeology, and Navajo culture. One very cool program in its 13th year is its Native Teen Guide In-Training (https://cfimoab.org/trips/ ntgit/) where Native American youth attend eightday, seven-night river trips on the San Juan River. The teens learn how to guide, tie knots, acquire basic rescue skills, while gaining leadership and professional development experience that can help lead to careers working in the outdoors. The program, led by a Native guide, is subsidized, allowing for indigenous teens with few financial resources to attend. The program is open to Native American teens from tribes across the nation, said Brennan Gillis, CFI marketing and communications director. “It now also includes a robust pipeline to a career working in the outdoors, including for CFI,” Gillis adds. Canyonlands Field Institute also offers outdoor science programs, including summer camps and field trips for Grand County schoolchildren. While CFI programs attract students from around the country, there’s a focus to make outdoor education available via scholarships to local schoolchildren – many of whom would otherwise have little access to such activities. During the fall, Moab Charter School students spent three days and two nights camping in teepees in Professor Valley where they hiked, learned about riparian ecology and the archaeology of the area, played games, and enjoyed unplugged time in nature. “Unforgettable” guided river-running trips for adults help subsidize the youth programming. Similar to a commercial outfitter, these trips differ from commercial trips in that proceeds from CFI trips pay to provide free programs for kids. “That’s what sets us apart,” Gillis says. “We’re one of the only nonprofit companies that takes that revenue,” to ensure outdoor education is available to local schoolchildren. All CFI guides are trained outdoor educators, who can interpret the landscape’s geology and archaeology. Trips take place on the Green, Colorado and San Juan rivers. “Trips are designed to connect people emotionally to the landscape,” Gillis says. “Our theory is if a person is connected to the land they are more likely to preserve it and abide by the ‘leave no trace’ philosophy.” Additionally, CFI offers Adult Adventure Seminars – open enrollment trips to explore areas such as Bears Ears, Cedar Mesa, and Range Creek. Each trip includes an expert seminar instructor. The new Mental Health Hike series is free to the public, thanks to funding from Grand County Economic Development, WabiSabi Thrift Store, and Moonflower Community Cooperative. The next Mental Health Hike events will take place on December 13, and 31, and January 10 and 28. “Standing next to the graves of his ancestors in Coyote, New Mexico, A man reflects on the years that have passed with the wind blowing and rain coming. Tears come to his eyes, as he remembers another time, another life. Yet, the same. He steps into a world in his mind, a world now gone, but in his thoughts he is still El Pequeñito—The Little One.”
