MAD ABOUT RUNNING
Moab’s Mad Moose Events draws runners from near and far
Written by Sharon Sullivan
Tyrese Stash surprised his parents years ago by signing up for the cross-country team as a freshman at Grand County High School, which prompted his parents and two younger brothers to take up running, too. “That’s when we got interested in running; we started joining him,” says his mother Charlene Stash. “We’ve been running together since 2014.”
Charlene and her husband Herbert grew up on the Navajo Reservation where Herbert ran cross-country, although Charlene had never taken up the sport until their eldest son began running to improve his health, she says. Tyrese, now 25, ran his first long distance event — 23 miles — at Navajo Mountain when he was a high school sophomore.
The Stash family often runs races hosted by Mad Moose Events, a Moab company that hosts premier running events — such as the Behind the Rocks Ultra in March, the final event in the Triple Crown of Moab series. To be considered a Triple Crown finisher, runners must complete two out of three other separate Mad Moose running events: the Dead Horse Ultra in November; the Arches Ultra in January; or Moab’s Red Hot Ultra in February. Participants choose distances ranging from 9K to 50 miles.
Tyrese’s younger brother Tyler ran the Behind the Rocks Ultra 30K at age 11. All three of the Stash brothers ran their first long-distance events at a young age, says their mother. Though the boys are mostly grown now, the family — including Tyrese’s girlfriend — continues to run together whenever they can, says Charlene. Tyrese and his gal will be working and volunteering at the Behind the Rocks Ultra event this year.
‘Celebrating running’
Denise and Justin Ricks founded Mad Moose Events 10 years ago, after hosting Moab running events from their then home base in Colorado Springs. When the Moab Travel Council reached out to the Ricks a decade ago suggesting they host more events to increase Moab tourism, the Ricks added wintertime events, from October through March. They purchased the Canyonlands Half Marathon, moved to Moab, and Mad Moose Events became a full-time, family-owned Moab business. They additionally hold running events in Colorado and other parts of Utah.
Mad Moose Events provides a needed economic boost to Moab during the winter season when tourism typically slows down. Mad Moose Events generate anywhere from $7-10 million per year for the area, says co-owner and race director Justin Ricks.

Extraordinary red-rock scenery, as well as the snowcapped peaks of the La Sal Mountains help draw world-renowned runners from all over the globe — including American ultrarunner Courtney Dauwalter who ran a Mad Moose event a couple of years ago. Last year, Dauwalter volunteered at an event. “It’s really fun for runners getting their medals from her,” Denise says.
Behind the Rocks Ultra, which happens on March 23, takes place on Bureau of Land Management property near the Behind the Rocks Wilderness Area. The course includes slickrock trails, and sweeping views of the La Sal Mountains. “It’s a really remote and rugged event,” Denise says. “What brings people there is the quiet of the event. It happens at the perfect time of year, when it’s starting to warm up.”
The race starts and finishes at the Behind the Rocks Trail, bordering the Behind the Rocks Wilderness Study Area. Tall Navajo Sandstone domes and fins can be seen from many places along the course, which includes smooth double track, sandy washes, technical doubletrack and challenging single-track trails. It’s free to camp at the start/finish line where many peo-
ple bring a cooler stocked with post-race drinks and can cheer their friends and family on.
“It has grown into a unique and special event in the running community,” Denise says. “We spend the day celebrating running.”
Aid stations along the courses offer water and electrolytes and — depending on the distance — snacks, sandwiches and soda. Mad Moose relies on volunteers to staff the stations
“Running is a teacher; a form of prayer and a celebration of life.”
—Herbert Stash, runner
— and in exchange, those who wish to compete get their entry fees waived.
Volunteering also benefits local nonprofit organizations. For the Canyonlands Half-Marathon, which also takes place in March, volunteers with nonprofit organizations help out at aid stations, and in return, receive a donation to their cause. Past volunteer-recipients include
Community Rebuilds, Grand County Trail Mix, and various Grand County sports teams.
Members of the Love 2 Run San Juan Running Club in Blanding also volunteer, thereby earning their entry fees for the Arches Ultra in January. Mad Moose also donates money to the club, and has secured donations of new running shoes for the youth. “We try as much as possible to give back to the community,” Denise says.
A spiritual component
While Charlene Stash has run the Behind the Rocks Ultra multiple times, she says the Red Hot Ultra in February is her favorite event. “The terrain climbs and climbs and climbs,” she says. “You arrive to the top of the cliff where you can see the entrance to Arches. The view is stunning; well worth it. It’s all about the scenery; the courses are so beautiful.”
While her eldest son originally began running to get in good physical shape, Charlene has found running helpful for mental well-being, too. “Running is good for stress reduction, she says. “If I have too much noise in the head I go out for a run.”

You don’t necessarily have to run fast to participate — some people speed walk, or jog the courses, Charlene says. “It’s important to do your homework and check out all race details on the web site so you know what you’re getting into when you sign up for a run, she notes.
For the Stash family running is also spiritual. Running together as a family has prompted conversations about their Navajo culture, Charlene notes. Herbert would explain that for the Diné (Navajo) people, “running is a teacher; a form of prayer and a celebration of life,” she says. He would share how long ago the Diné ran east toward the rising sun each morning, a tradition that has been passed down. “Running at dawn represents new birth. Holy people (spirits) are out in the morning celebrating the birth of a new day, and so to be out running at this time it shows Mother Earth and Father Sky what kind of a person you are,” she says.
Running ‘just for fun’
All Mad Moose events are races, although not everyone comes to win. “A race is a celebration of a successful season of training,” Justin says. “It’s where runners come together to enjoy the running community. Some people come to compete, but most come to challenge themselves mentally and physically. They’re not (necessarily) in the race for a win.”
Like the Stash family, the Ricks also run together with their children. Both their son Malachi, 22, and daughter Kylah, 20, excelled at running in high school, with Kylah going on to become a professional runner. She won three state cross-country competitions, and five state track titles for Grand County High School. As a professional, she placed ninth at the U.S. Mountain Running Championships in New Hampshire where she competed against three World Champions, says her proud mom. Malachi is also an accomplished runner, though he’s currently recovering from a knee injury. Malachi and Kylah are also part-owners of the business.
“We’ve been runners our whole life,” says Denise, who met her husband when they were both 18 and ran on the college cross-country team at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs.
In December, the couple ran together in a non-Mad Moose event — the Moab Locals 10K event — which Justin won, Denise mentions.
Mostly, though, “Justin and I run just for fun,” she says. “We run together every day.” n

MOAB’S AIRPORT IS READY FOR THE BUSY SEASON WITH A NEW COMMERCIAL ROUTE, SCENIC FLIGHTS, AND MORE
Written by Rachel Fixsen | Photos by Murice D. Miller
“One day I could be fixing plumbing, the next day I’m working up a budget for the airport or in a meeting with the FAA,” says Tammy Howland, airport director of the Canyonlands Regional Airport, which serves the Moab area. “It’s a very diverse job.”
Howland took on the director position in 2022, but she’s worked at the airport in various roles for 13 years, giving her a deep knowledge of the operations.
“I do know the ins and outs to the fullest depths of this airport,” she says.
And there is a lot to know. Canyonlands
Regional bustles with general aviation, flightbased businesses, and commercial service. There are ongoing updates and maintenance projects, the labyrinth of federal regulations and requirements to know and monitor, and the ever-present challenge of optimizing service for a small community.
Scenic tours and thrills
Canyonlands Regional is located in flat scrubland north of Moab, but spectacular canyons and spires define the surrounding landscape and are the feature of many scenic tours offered from the airport.
Redtail Air is one of the longest-running businesses at the airport. It offers scenic tours from 30 minutes to three hours long, and the company holds one of the few available permits to fly over national parks like Arches, Canyonlands, and Bryce Canyon. Passengers ride in either a three-seater Cessna 172 or a nine-seater Kodiak. In 2022, Redtail purchased Pinnacle Helicopters, which gives scenic tours in rotorwing aircraft.
Redtail also provides shuttles for river trips: Book a trip with a guide company in town, and it may include a flight to the put-in, where passengers meet their river guide and boats. Aspiring pilots can also look to Redtail for pilot instruction and to earn their training hours.
Starting this year, Redtail is also offering twice-weekly commuter flights from Moab to Salt Lake City. With the help of a grant from Grand County, the company flies to the state capital every Tuesday and Thursday, at a ticket price of $150 each way. Redtail started the service when the airport’s contract with SkyWest Airline, offering regular commercial flights to Salt Lake, came to an end. Many Moab locals need to visit the city regularly. Redtail’s Amanda Moore says one of their first passengers on the route was a military veteran who routinely visits the VA office in Salt Lake.
Moore started working at Redtail in 2020. Soon after she started, she was laid off because of the pandemic shutdowns, but she returned a few months later and is now the fixed-base operations manager, meaning she oversees the “land side” of Redtail’s work.
MOAB AREA REAL ESTATE MAGAZINE March–April 2024 33
Tammy Howland, airport director at Canyonlands Regional Airport
A fixed-base operator manages general aviation at an airport: Redtail provides services at Canyonlands Regional like marshaling aircraft on the tarmac, selling fuel, and exterior mechanical work on small aircraft.
During the busy season, several general aviation jets land each day, Moore says, and there are small planes in and out all day long. The airport was especially busy when a big-budget movie project—Kevin Costner’s “Horizon” production—came to town. It was fun meeting pilots who flew celebrities, Moore says, and hearing their impressions.
Moore has no interest in flying aircraft, but she’s grown to love the aviation world.
“I think aviation is fascinating,” she says. “I really like logistics, details, and meeting the passengers. I like working behind the scenes.”
She also loves the atmosphere at her job.
“A big part of why I’m still here is the community at the airport,” Moore says.
That sentiment is echoed by Keith MacBeth, who owns the dropzone for Skydive Moab, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary at Canyonlands Regional Airport.
“Everybody at the airport gets along with each other,” MacBeth says. “A lot of people have been here for years.”
MacBeth took over Skydive Moab 14 years ago from his brother. The company rents an airplane that stays in a hangar owned by Skydive Moab. They lease the property from the airport, the standard arrangement for airport tenants. Macbeth says the company might run 80 or 90 tandem jumps a day during the season (the business closes during the winter).
“We have experienced jumpers, we have student jumpers, we have tandem jumpers,” MacBeth says. He himself has been skydiving for 29 years and has completed more than 12,000 jumps. In addition to tandem jumps, Skydive Moab offers training for people who want to learn to jump on their own—MacBeth says about 30 people a year graduate from the training program.
MacBeth says Canyonlands Regional has been a great home for his business, and he appreciates Howland’s leadership.
“The airport is continuing to grow each year,” MacBeth says. “And I think Tammy is doing a great job.”
Commercial service
Canyonlands Regional is an Essential Air Service airport, meaning airlines are offered federal subsidies to provide commercial air service to the small, rural area that might otherwise have none. EAS contracts last for three years, and then the US Department of Transportation puts out a request
for proposals and airlines bid again on new EAS contracts. Recently, Canyonlands Regional’s contract with SkyWest, through which the airline offered regular flights to Denver and Salt Lake City, came to an end.
EAS contracts, already subject to complex FAA and USDOT requirements, have been further complicated by a national shortage of pilots. The process of getting a new contract was challenging, but in February, the airport’s new EAS provider, Contour Airlines, began its daily flights from Moab to Phoenix. The new destination was a disappointment for some Moab area residents, but Howland is optimistic.
“I know it was a hard pill for a lot of people to swallow,” she says. “But I think Phoenix is going to be a great alternative.”
And she’s working to regain the Denver destination. The “big news,” Howland says, is that Contour is entering into a new business arrangement with SkyWest that will allow the two companies to share some of their assets—and that increases the likelihood that commercial flights to Denver could again become available at Canyonlands Regional in the near future, in addition to the current daily flights to Phoenix offered by Contour.
Another element that influences decisionmaking about EAS contracts is the fact that

airports are eligible for federal funding for capital improvement projects, and the dollar amount is based on annual enplanements at that airport—that is, the number of commercial tickets booked to depart from an airport like Canyonlands Regional.
For years, Canyonlands Regional had a goal of reaching 10,000 enplanements a year, and the airport reached that goal in 2017. The number is important because it marks a threshold for a substantial increase in federal funding: Below 10,000 enplanements, the airport was eligible for just $150,000 each year, but beyond that threshold, it became eligible for $1 million a year. In 2021, that amount was doubled by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
Last year, Canyonlands Regional saw around 20,000 enplanements—still well above the 10,000 benchmark. But Howland keeps those numbers in mind when looking over EAS proposals and contracts. Fewer flights, and smaller planes with fewer seats, could shrink the number of enplanements and jeopardize the federal funding.
The current project making use of that funding is a four-phase plan to relocate a taxiway and expand the ramp, at an estimated cost of $8 million. The airport is able to save the federal money over multiple years to finance high-cost projects like this one.
“It’s much needed because of the size of the planes and a lack of ramp space,” Howland says. During the busy season, the airport sometimes has to turn pilots away because there’s not enough airplane parking. Those pilots can still land and get fuel, but there may be no room for them to leave their plane at the airport— they have to go to another airport, like Grand
Junction. Howland says she tries to get the word out to pilots that they should call ahead and check how busy things are at Canyonlands Regional before counting on parking space.
Training
The 10,000 enplanement threshold reached in 2017 also triggered a requirement that the airport conduct an emergency response training exercise every three years. This March will be the second such training.
Partner emergency response agencies, such as the Moab Valley Fire Department, Grand County EMS, Grand County Sheriff’s Office, Moab Police Department, Moab
Regional Hospital, and Southeast Utah Health Department, are invited to participate in a realistic emergency scenario staged at the airport. The exercise might simulate a crash of a commercial flight, challenging airport staff and emergency personnel with dozens of patients, possibly a fire, and communication priorities and logistics. Responders are trained to deal with the incident itself, but also with how to route airport traffic, whom to notify, and how to manage other contingencies.
This kind of training is going back to her roots for Howland: her first job at the airport was as a part-time aircraft-rescue firefighter, and her background is in fire and EMS. In addition to the emergency response training, the airport also regularly holds training to certify firefighters in aircraft rescue and response.
Howland is still prepared to respond to emergencies at the airport—she keeps her aircraft rescue certification current at the airport’s annual firefighting training. They use what they call a “mobile prop”--it’s basically a model aircraft that travels around the state on a semi trailer, allowing firefighters to train at their own airport facilities using their own equipment. The prop has fold-out wings and produces actual propane-fueled fire that trainees have to extinguish.
While she keeps her certifications current, Howland gained much of her knowledge through on-the-job training as she spent more time in different roles at the airport.
“The more I learned, the more I really started to have a sense of ownership of the airport,” Howland says. “I really thrived. And here I am 13 years later, running the whole outfit.” n
