PUBLIC CONDENSER PB GRADUATION STUDIO

as SPACES OF FAMILIARITY

Public Condenser as Spaces of Familiarity in Morgenstond, The Hague. Studio’s Objective: Designing a new type of Public Building which will be a future proof for a dynamic, flexible and sustainable public buildings. Assignment: In the Graduation Studio, Public Condenser, we were asked to investigate and analyze two different sites in two different cities (Copenhagen and the Hague). From collective research, the design of a multi-functional Public Building started based on our own interest. Manifesto: The manifesto Spaces of Familiarity is a reflection on current situation in the area regarding population and public spaces. Here I am experimenting by bringing different people from different cultures together in adjacent open frameworks (Grid) to evoke dialogue between them, and co-existence by introducing the residents and their cultures to each other’s to make the unfamiliar and strange, familiar, in a causal way

Analysis The Grid

1. Situating volume along the main axises.

4. Creating squares for various social activities.

2. Creating grid in the main volume.

5. building’s eyes on the landmarks

3. Stretching the grid to make bigger blocks.

6. Clustering the similar activities around the squares.

The Layout Open & Non-Hierarchical

Impression Square & Alleyway

Contemplation Square

Contemplation Square: one for contemplation or relaxing. Here is a render where you can see what is happening in squares but at the same time the visitors see what is going on inside these spaces of familiarity and are inside. For example, on the right side are cooking, and in front block we have physical therapy training with a spa lounge. This faรงade of the hammam was made very transparent to invite people to know more about this specific function, this implies for the kitchen here.

Impression Alleyway & Familiarity

Alleyway

Alleyway & Familiarity: The alleyways will be the place where people will be encountered with each other’s and at the same time, they will see in close what the spaces of familiarity are. Flexibility: Designing a scheme of identical blocks has absolutely consequences on other architectural decision, such as the structure. Therefore, the flexible layout requires a flexible and demountable structure to support the concept of it and the future demographic and functional change especially in a very fast changing neighbourhood such as Morgenstond.

Impression Religious & Culture

Religious Space

Religious Space: This is a view inside the religious space, where people from different beliefs are invited to share it. The design of space is modest and minimalist. It relies on the effect of the structural element to create a relieving atmosphere. Details: These details illustrate the relationship between the structural elements and the envelope. The structural elements are made from the pre-cast concrete which can be demounted. On the external side of the structural elements, a light envelope is constructed which are also easy to change without influencing the structure elements in the blocks. The finishing of the envelopes is from light materials such as blocks and brick slips as well as from cement boards which are covered by stucco.

ACTIVATING LEFTOVER CP STUDIO

of PUBLIC REALM

Studio’s Objective: Making students familiar with the multiple aspects of analysis and design. Assignment: During MSc 1, collectively, we were asked to investigate and analyze an area between two infrastructural rings (19C Ringstrasse to the Gurtel) covering the area from the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna Opera House) to Pilgramgasse metro station. Furthermore, the research zooms in from the large scale of the city itself, to the medium scale the site. Intervention: The project tackles the fragmentation and the abandonment of the leftover of public realm which was a result of sequential construction of different traffic arteries and public transport. Therefore, the project intervenes on urban and architectural levels; and hereby I propose a public and cultural hub of the intersection of the metro station and the square.

1. Traffic arteries and the height differences separate the two parts of the Karlsplatz.

4. Dividing the upper volume into parts

2. Reaching a continuous flow in Karlsplatz by lowering the second part of the square.

5. Orientating the volume toward the Naschmarket

3. Redesign the accesses of the metro and having one instead of two. Activating the second part of the square by designing a public activity.

6. Building’s eyes on the landmarks

Outside & Inside

Outside & Inside: For a total transparency, curved glass was used. This application was to prevent any object ( profiles..etc.) from covering or distorting the view form outside to inside or from inside-out. Moreover, the use of this type of glass represents the abstract idea of the project as a counter-reaction of the baroque architecture which is dominated in the area.

Abstract & Ornamented

Abstract & Ornamented: The opening in the upper volume is designed in a clear way. It meant to be a counter-reaction against the baroque city in an abstract way, The buildings takes the visitors from surroundings full of detail and richly decorated to a building with minimum detail and opening especially the upper volume.

NEW LIFE H&A STUDIO

of MODERN NEIGHBORHOOD.

New Life of the Modern Neighborhood, ArnhemThe Netherlands. Studio’s Objective: Investigating a post-war Modern neighborhood and its future potential. Intervention: The starting point of the project was to improve the built environment of the Presikhaaf shopping mall residential blocks as well as the social life between residents in the area as well as building diverse residential unites to help solve home shortage in the Arnhem. Therefore, an elevated square was proposed which will operate as a social hub and a meeting place for the residents. The new elevated squares provides private gardens for the flats as well as a communal space for gathering. Intervention: The new proposed residential units are intertwined, intersected and stacked in different ways to create dynamic and diversity in the area which will break the monotone and homogeneity of Modern Neighborhood of the 1950s.

Current Situation: The perceived problems are as follows: 1. Lack of green spaces. 2. Noise coming from the parking lot. 3. Disconnection and not feeling at home due to the lack of private or collective space. 4. Air pollution due to the sheer quantity of cars. 5. Lack of social security. The Interventions: The diagrammatic section shows the interventions on the existing buildings as following: 1- the creation of individual uplifted gardens for each existing residential apartments. 2- The stairs to bridge the height differences between the roof of the shopping mall and the flats). 3- Creating the new residential block on street side. 4- Keeping the parking lot to meet the need of the residents and the visitors of the shopping mall 5- Creating an elevated collective square (Social hub) where tenants meet and socialize.

Module and Stacking: The project is a result of stacking two different timber units along the main road in the neighborhood. Stacking the units creates different apartments typologies with different sizes . These diversity and variation will break the monotone and homogeneity in the surrounded built environment.

Elevated Courtyard: This impression shows the new private zone and the collective courtyard of both the new building and the existing one. The courtyard works as a collective space or as a (Social Hub) in the neighbourhood improving the social life of the tenants and offering a place for a save and a fun space for children to play.
