NEW! Oracle Cloud| AXIZWORKGROUP: Oracle Stack
CHA N n E L SPECIAL EDITION
What do you want? More money? Bigger margins? Larger revenue?
From the editor The sky is not the limit but a good place to start The digital transformation of businesses is no longer a question of when (as its happening right now) and has moved on to how. Demand for faster innovation cycles, growth from non-traditional markets and rapid response to non-traditional competitors are just some of the high level business demands squarely on the shoulders of CEO’s, CIO’s and businesses as a whole.
The digital transformation of businesses is no longer a question of when (as its happening right now) and has moved on to how. Cloud is a disruptive off-shoot of rapid innovation but it has brought with it opportunity. Oracle’s advancements in PaaS has moved the focus from the CIO to the LOB manager, has changed the emphasis from products and their features to business outcomes and has transcended the need for large scale customization to a prepacked offering with a fixed price and scope. These are just some of the PaaS trends changing the way businesses interact internally and with each other. As a result, we’re seeing a more frictionless, proactive usage monitoring and the creation of communities of advocates and success stories. The new Oracle PaaS and SaaS mode has made the commercial world as big as the cloud, and how big is the cloud, well that’s part of the beauty of it all, you chose. Oracle’s PaaS enables the customer to
connect to SaaS and other clouds, extends SaaS to support unique requirements, allows the client to move test and development to the cloud and enables the client to move database workloads to the cloud. For the reseller business, the sky is not the limit but a good place to start. The Oracle cloud sales numbers are staggering to say the least, more and more clients are catching onto the cloud wave, as it will invariably give them a superior competitive edge in the market place. As an Oracle partner, you Mr reseller, should be the vehicle helping them to on-board this technology and if you’re not, know that someone else is. PaaS, IaaS and SaaS are projected to grow at 19%, 34% and 17% respectively. On the other side of the coin, their on-premise counter-parts are only projected to grow by 4%, 2% and 3% respec-
tively. Moreover, the cloud market is earmarked to double in the next four years. Think about the people you service, they have very real pressures placed on their personal and business success. How do I reduce my IT spend without compromising my level of service? How do I gear the business up to take advantage of the cloud disruptions? How do I simplify a very complex IT environment in order to streamline procedural competencies? These are just some of the questions ringing in the ears of the CXO’s and Oracle cloud answers these expertly. In our region, EMEA, the FY14 saw $4bn being spent on cloud hardware by cloud providers and 80% of businesses strategically planning to use cloud by 2016. Cloud is real, it’s here and the channel needs to wake up to this reality and opportunity.

5
things you should know about cloud.
Built on a comprehensive portfolio of best-in-class, integrated products and services, Oracle’s private cloud supports application, platform, and infrastructure-level clouds, with deep visibility into security, regulatory compliance, and service levels.
1. Clouds come in several “flavours”— public, private, and hybrid. 2. Private clouds help today’s businesses address their most urgent challenges: -Reducing IT complexity - Protecting corporate data - Complying with regulatory and industry standards. 3. Private clouds are
dedicated to a single organization (or to multiple organizations in a single community) 4. Private clouds are often set up and managed by corporate IT groups and run inside the firewall. 5. Private clouds can also be deployed and managed at third-party sites.
12
Oracle’s server, operating system, and built-in virtualization technologies provide the best value when building private clouds
W
hile the benefits of cloud computing are well documented, customers face challenges inim-
plementing private clouds that consistently demonstrate favourable results. Oracle’s technology powers cloud infrastructure with the best agility, flexibility, and efficiency.

hey allow even higher levels of security and isolation for groups of VMs and fine tuning of I/O resources. Live migration of logical domains facilitates the lifecycle management of the underlying hardware and operating system infrastructure.
Virtualization with More Agility and Less Overhead
O
racle’s virtualization model offers virtually zero overhead through built-in, no-cost technologies. In a cloud environment, virtual machines (VMs) are deployed in Oracle Solaris Zones, where they become agile, and lightweight while still robust and secure.
Higher Thread Density Means Better Performance
O
racle’s SPARC T5 microprocessors provide 5x more hardware threads than the x86 E5 v2 processors used widely in cloud infrastructure. That allows SPARC T5 servers to support a much larger number of VMs compared with x86-based servers, especially because oversubscription of VMs onto hardware threads on X86
processors can create significant performance overhead. While virtualizing workloads on SPARC T5 servers introduces virtually zero overhead, it can introduce up to 25 percent performance degradation on x86 servers using leading virtualization software.

Oracle Private Cloud Appliance From now on, the Oracle Virtual Compute Appliance (VCA) is known as the Oracle Private Cloud Appliance (PCA). The new name was chosen to better reflect the product’s focus on private, on-premise cloud environments. Oracle PCA is built on the same software technology that powers Oracle’s public cloud infrastructure. The Oracle PCA Dashboard, Command Line Interface and appliance management scripts
have been updated in accordance with the name change. Oracle Private Cloud Appliance (PCA) is an Oracle Engineered System designed for virtualization. It is an offering that industry analysts refer to as a Converged Infrastructure Appliance: an infrastructure solution in the form of a hardware appliance that comes from the factory pre-configured. Compute resources, network hardware,
storage providers, operating systems and applications are engineered to work together but are managed and operated as a single unit. Installation, configuration, high availability, expansion and upgrading are automated and orchestrated as much as possible.

WHAT’S In IT
The minimum configuration consists of a base rack with infrastructure components, a pair of management nodes, and two compute nodes. This configuration can be extended by one compute node at a time. All rack units, whether populated or not, are pre-cabled and pre-configured at the factory in order to facilitate the installation of expansion compute nodes on-site at a later time. Within approximately one hour after power-on, the appliance is ready to create virtual servers. Virtual servers are commonly deployed from Oracle VM templates (individual pre-configured VMs) and assemblies (interconnected groups of pre-configured VMs). The primary value proposition of Oracle PCA is the integration of components and resources for the purpose of ease of use and rapid deployment. It should be considered a general purpose solution in the sense that it supports the widest variety of oper-
ating systems, including Windows, and any application they might host. Customers can attach their existing storage or provide storage solutions from Oracle or third parties.
Server X5-2 management nodes. The software must be upgraded to the correct version to support Oracle Server X5-2 hardware.
Components & Improvements
The initial version of the Oracle Private Cloud Appliance, the X3-2 base rack, was shipped with the Sun ZFS Storage Appliance 7320. This hardware component has since been replaced with the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance ZS3-ES. Software support for the Oracle ZFS Storage Appliance ZS3-ES is available as of Release1.1.3. All software releases continue to support the Sun ZFS Storage Appliance 7320.
Oracle Private Cloud Appliance base racks are factory installed with Oracle Server X5-2 nodes. Earlier versions of the Oracle PCA were shipped with Sun Server X4-2 or Sun Server X3-2 nodes, which continue to be supported by the Oracle PCA controller software. Oracle PCA racks that contain Sun Server X3-2 and/ or Sun Server X4-2 nodes may also contain Oracle Server X5-2 nodes if additional nodes have been installed, or existing nodes have been replaced. Software support for Oracle Server X5-2 expansion compute nodes is available as of Release 2.0.2 of the Oracle PCA controller software. Release 2.0.3 adds support for Oracle
At the software level, Oracle PCA leverages the virtualization technology of Oracle VM and Oracle Virtual Networking. Management, including updates, of the underlying hardware and software is orchestrated and largely automated by the Oracle PCA controller software.

Intergrated Virtualization
Lower Costs
L
ayered virtualization technologies included in Oracle Solaris, Oracle Solaris Zones, and Oracle VM Server for SPARC ensure secure consolidation onto a database cloud. Implemented as a firmware-based hypervisor, Oracle VM Server for SPARC allocates subsets of system assets, such as memory, I/O, and CPU, to each domain, isolating each Oracle Solaris instance and database workload into a virtual machine with dedicated resources. With flexible software-based boundaries, Oracle Solaris Zones is a lightweight virtualization technology that creates multiple private execution environments within a single Oracle Solaris instance. Together, these virtualization technologies are critical enablers to secure database workload consolidation within Oracle SuperCluster, allowing an assortment of test, development, and production databases to run on a single system without impacting each other’s service requirements. Additionally, organizations that must safeguard access and protect sensitive data, such as
