DeLand is a special town, noted for its arts and cultural calendar, its authentic and vibrant Main Street, its music, museums, restaurants and stores, and Stetson University. Coordinating Wearable Art 5 is the Museum Guild’s contribution to the community by fundraising for educational programming at the Museum, and by bringing artists and audience together for a memorable, fun evening. The Museum Guild would like to extend a gracious thank you to all who have participated, to our generous sponsors, artists, models, judges, Museum staff and board, production crew and volunteers galore. You make it happen! Thank you all for being here tonight. - Deborah McShane, Guild President, Marty Suarez, Guild Vice President and Diane Moore, Event Chair 4
Dear Friends, In the cultural education world, an institution’s professional significance is determined by the evaluation of its peers, as well as by the qualitative achievements of its staff and the loyalty demonstrated by its community volunteers. A great deal of the Museum’s success and fiscal stability is due to the dedication of its Guild members - including its Wearable Art 5 Committee - who have lent unwavering support to our programs, social events and fundraisers by taking on numerous tasks, all year long, necessary to ensure a good time is had by all. The Museum’s business partners have contributed generously to making this fifth annual juried art fundraiser, and the educational programming it supports, a success. A vibrant community where the arts and culture flourish requires a healthy local economy, so we encourage your support of the sponsors listed in this program. Sincerely, George S. Bolge, CEO Museum of Art - DeLand
Wearable Art V Judges Peggy Imbert, a Florida Native, began quilting as a hobby in 2000. She started with traditional piecing and appliqué, but her natural artistic flair took over and soon she was creating her own original designs. She uses techniques that include hand dying, painting, burning and sewing to embellish her work. Her work has gained national attention. She has been published in Quilting Arts Magazine. Peggy’s many complishments include recognition at the Houston International Quilt Show for quilting and photography. Currently, she has an Art Quilt in the DeLand City Hall with other members of Arts Etc, a group of surface design and textile artists. Mary McBride is an artist from DeLand. As well as playing with her own art, she curates exhibitions, judges shows, runs retreats, and gives lectures and workshops. McBride currently curates exhibitions at the Peabody Auditorium Rose Room, Daytona Beach. She is a Studio Art Quilt Associate Member of the Executive Exhibition Committee and curated the traveling exhibition “Metaphor for Aging,” which opened in August 2013 at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham, UK, and then traveled to South Africa and Brazil. Patricia Miles, retired art teacher with more than 40 years’ experience, taught IB and AP Art at DeLand High School and Spruce Creek High School. She also served as the Art Supervisor for Volusia County Schools for many years. Miles has done countless workshops at state and national conferences, providing professional development opportunities for art teacher groups across the state. A former member of Arts Etc, Miles is currently a liturgical arist specializing in set design, banner making, parchment and fabric designs. 5
ARTISTS’ BIOS Nancy Alonso
Nancy Alonso’s inspiration came from her work as a registered nurse. (She also has a degree in fashion design.) She would survey the multitude of packages delivered, and was intrigued with their form and function. Nancy’s passion is costumes; she enjoys working with unconventional materials to produce award-winning ensembles. Ms. Alonso uses materials like mat foam, resin, wonderflex, plastic, and fosshape. She was awarded with First Prize at Masquerade Dragoncon 2014. In addition, Nancy has designed evening and bridal wear since 2000, having her last show in August 2015. She created a fairy tale wedding collection with emphasis on hand beading and fabric manipulations.
Neva “The Diva” Durham
Local to Lakeland, Neva is a unique and creative makeup and body artist, face painter and wearable art designer who provides beautiful looks to fashion shows, photo shoots, weddings and any other call for fashion. She specializes in a variety of looks, from porcelain skin to couture and from magazine to runway. “Create on Demand” seems to be the gift she has been given. She gives all the credit to Jesus for her talent, in which she lives her dream day to day of becoming a famous makeup artist/wearable art designer extraordinaire!
Grace Edghill
Grace Seale Edghill is a native of Barbados, West Indies, and a graduate of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. with over 40 years of experience in the arts and fashion industry. She has worked with many fashion designers in the New York City fashion district. GQ Magazine featured one of Edghill’s designs in their February 1990 spring review issue. In 1989, Edghill established an art production company, “grace-e-designs.” The company provides workshops in silk painting and home shows of original wearable art (ties, scarves, tunics) and Afrocentric hangings. Each piece of art is original and hand-painted on silk.
Nancy Hagood
Nancy Hagood is an abstract artist who works in acrylics and mixed media, embodying an ethereal power. Born in Ecuador, she arrived in New York City at the age of five. There, influenced by her artist brother and the city itself, Hagood fell in love with art. As an adult, answering the call from reality, Hagood entered the legal field, rife with the good, the bad, and the not to be named. Creating art became her release. She was fortunate to find mentors to help her find her right path. Hagood has received numerous awards and is affiliated with many organizations and galleries throughout Florida. Her studio is located in New Smyrna Beach, where she resides. “Sharing the soul through creativity is a great feeling and it happens every time one creates,” Hagood said.
Julian Hartzog
In 25 BC the Roman architect Vitruvius said, “The eye is always in search of beauty.” And one of the most beautiful things to look at is a beautifully adorned lady, according to Julian Hartzog. “I have enjoyed my pursuit to create art, fash6
ARTISTS’ BIOS ioned to be worn. I entered the Dunedin Fine Art Center Wearable Art Show in 2013-2015 and the Guild of the Museum of Art-DeLand’s Wearable Art Show in 2014 and 2015. In 2014 the first three outfits I designed were accepted into the prestigious World of Wearable Art Show in New Zealand. To my surprise, I won the International Award for the Americas and the three outfits are part of their permanent collection and on display in their museum in New Zealand. In 2015 I again received the International Award for the Americas,” Hartzog said. Hartzog is a Renaissance man who likes to design things, from easels to furniture to boats, from commercial buildings to his own Villa des Beaux Arts. Kathy Ivers Local artist Kathleen Ivers was born in Washington D.C. in 1950 and grew up in California. She received her BA in Fine Art at Cal State University, Hayward. Ivers was strongly influenced by the work of Mel Raymus, and another major influence was Channing Peake, a personal friend and mentor. She paints on canvas, paper and silk. Mixed media has also been a strong factor in her creations for the last couple years. “The wearable art show is a super fun venue to let loose my imagination and artistry,” Ivers said. Carson Kapp An artist and registered architect, Kapp’s exuberant spirit shines through each composition, capturing the spontaneity and emotion of life. The foundation of her passion for art is rooted in Tulane University. Ignited by the perennial charm of The Big Easy, Kapp’s work captures the spontaneity and motion of life, which marries the linear and curvilinear. Her design process builds upon her passion for the art in architecture and is articulated in her artwork. Erin McCollum Hailing from Orlando, Erin McCollum is a graduating fine arts student at Stetson University, with minors in both art history and digital art. A painter and sculptor, her work is most often inspired by baroque and rococo style, symbols of mysticism, and science. She is a Creative Consultant at Universal Creative, where she creates storyboards and concept illustrations for attractions for Universal Studios Theme Parks. Her accomplishments include several Best of Show awards, as well as having an independent film screened at the Cannes Film Festival.

ARTISTS’ BIOS Gretchen Neal
Gretchen Neal is originally from Winter Park. She began her career in Atlanta as a graphic designer working in newspaper and magazine advertising, specializing in design and layout. In 1983, she left advertising to begin teaching small group, after school art classes to children and launch a career as a specialty painter, working with interior designers. Her extensive works include murals, faux-finished walls and hand painted furniture. Most recently Gretchen has been working with one of Coca Cola’s Global Marketing executives who has hired her to conceive and facilitate large scale, corporate art projects. These projects have been designed to promote a sense of family among Coca Cola’s Atlanta-based employees on a local level.
Zoe Powell
Zoe attends Ivy Hawn School of the Arts as a third grade student. She is an active TEAM gymnast and an accomplished equestrian who jumps her pony, Happy, at hunter/jumper shows. Zoe has always been very engaged in the arts, which had been nurtured in the Montessori environment she grew up in. Zoe has been known for her 'own' style in clothing and mixing styles together from a very young age (2 years old). Her pre-school teacher Mrs. Monroe used to say that she puts an eclectic style together that could be sold in upscale children boutiques. As Zoe got older, around 5 years old, she started to develop a strong interest in dress design. "Bird of Paradise" represents Zoe's love for animals in general but also the mystery of animals from other countries. She has included different animal prints such as cheetah and zebra, but the real focus is the ostentatious bottom part of the dress, inspired by the colors of Toucan beaks, an overall elegant dress molding animal and woman into one.
Mary Ratcliff
Mary Ratcliff is a senior at the University of North Florida, majoring in fine arts with a concentration in sculpture and a minor in professional education. Her artwork has recently been molded around opportunities to create largescale outdoor sculptures. This has sparked an interest in designing and creating site-specific works. She finds inspirations from nature, often combining organic and geometric forms. Her artwork often exhibits a dynamic application of bright, stimulating colors that she feels brings attraction, energy, and life to her work.
Teresa Rench
Teresa Rench is a designer and artist working primarily in oil painting, mosaics, and encaustic painting. She is currently living in the Charlotte, NC area where she has been deeply involved in the local art scene as both artist and patron, recently serving as a Vice President on the Board of Directors for the Civic and Cultural Arts Center of Pineville. She is a fashion enthusiast as well and enjoys the challenge of using unconventional materials to create wearable art.
Natasha Radovicz Schaidt
"Utilizing bright colors accompanied by the anatomical heart, my work is pas8
ARTISTS’ BIOS sionate and full of life. The title is inspired by one of my favorite songs by Celia Cruz, La Vida es un Carnaval. Through the song's colorful melody and positive message, I was compelled to create this piece. Just like the song, and even the singer, my work is loud, positive and celebratory. Primarily a painter, I decorated the heart with paint brushes, symbolizing my close relationship to painting. The head piece accompanying the outfit is garnished with the heart in the center and eclectic colors around it. Taking from a work I have already created and turning it into a new medium, this outfit is a perfect example of me trying new outlets of self expression and to create something that I personally would wear," Schaidt said.
Kate Shockey
“Many in my family are artistically inclined, and as a dancer, my wearable art recalls that legacy. My present incarnation has me working for the Clerk of Court as an HR manager, where I have focused on assisting the change dynamics for the last 4 years. I have been fortunate to participate in the Wearable Art Fundraiser for the last 3 years and love the fact it nurtures the artistic youth of tomorrow,” Shockey said.
Gail Warner
Gail K. Warner holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in advertising & PR from Valparaiso University and spent over 20 years in the aerospace & defense industry with no outlet for her creativity. She's making up for it now. She's a self-taught urban upcycle artist, working mainly with industrial elements and the packaging that accompanies everyday purchases. She takes these found objects generally destined for the recycling bin and creates wearable art or home accents.
