SHINE ON

Dear New Spartan: Welcome to Missouri Baptist University! We can’t wait for you to join our MBU family. Before you know it, the campus trees will be graced with shades of orange and yellow, fans will cheer as MBU’s football team plays underneath the bright Saturday night lights and you will finally be a college student of the best kind—a MBU Spartan. Today, you had the opportunity to take your first steps in becoming an enrolled student. We know that this process can be a little overwhelming and we fully understand that you may have more questions. No worries—just contact your admissions counselor and he/she will help you touch base with the appropriate person to answer your questions. Our entire Enrollment Services team is here to make your college transition a success. If you are around campus over the summer, we welcome you to stop by and visit. After all, you belong here. Welcome home.

Cynthia Sutton Executive Director of Undergraduate Admissions

(Friday, August 14 – Sunday, August 16)

The MBU experience is more than attending classes. It’s about being engaged with the MBU community and taking advantage of the countless opportunities, all beginning the first week! Welcome Weekend will be the launchpad of developing your passions and cultivating your ideas at MBU. It will show you how to embrace everything the MBU community has to offer and explore opportunities in and out of the classroom.

Friday – Move-In Day & Parent Programming In early July, the Office of Resident Life will mail out a move-in day packet with your specific move-in date, time, and unloading instructions. Due to the complex nature of moving new students onto campus, all students must arrive on their assigned day and time. Parents are encouraged to participate in the Friday activities. The student-only portion of Welcome Weekend begins Saturday morning. Parents are expected to make departure arrangements by Friday evening so their student can fully engage with the Welcome Weekend activities.

Saturday & Sunday – Welcome Weekend (Students Only) Students will participate in a variety of activities, informational sessions and events designed to assist with their transition to MBU.

First Month Frenzy Getting connected to the campus community doesn’t stop at Welcome Week. The first month is jam-packed with fun events, free food and great ways to make new friends. *A detailed Welcome Weekend schedule will be mailed out this summer.

Your student ID card can be attained from the Public Safety Office. Present them with your student ID number and they will take your picture and print your student ID card.

CAMPUS LIFE

Involvement at MBU outside of coursework is a vital part of the overall collegiate student experience. Research on university students suggest co-curricular involvement is related to increased student learning and cognitive, psychosocial, moral and ethical development as well as students having a stronger sense of belonging, higher GPAs and overall success rates. Students develop greater self-knowledge of their talents and strengths as well as improving their leadership competence and the capacity to mobilize themselves and others to serve and work collaboratively. We affirm the choice of our students to be involved in the campus and community – and student organizations provide one avenue to engage in a co-curricular experience through our organizations focused on: advocacy & awareness, academic & honorary, mission & service, and special interest.

ACADEMIC ADVISING 101 Student Success Advisor (SSA) All incoming students with the exception of education, music and theatre majors are assigned to a Student Success Advisor (SSA) to guide them in their transition to MBU. You will meet periodically with your SSA throughout your first year to assist with schedule changes, major selection, career guidance, connections to student resources, and academic and non-academic support. What is an academic advisor? An academic advisor provides students with information on academic requirements needed for degree completion, helps students plan for future graduate studies or a career, and serves as a reference for general campus information. Who is my academic advisor? During your first semester of attendance, you will be assigned an academic advisor. Your academic advisor will be a faculty member within the academic division of your major. For example, if you are a math major, your faculty advisor would be a math professor. To find out who your academic advisor is, log into MyMBU Access. Your academic advisor will be listed at the top of the “My Schedule” page for the current academic term. Why might I need to see my academic advisor? • To develop long-range academic and career plans. • Assistance with course planning, registration, and referral to other university resources. • Approval for all schedule adjustments (add/drops), overloads (taking more than 18 hours/ semester), courses for online registration, inter-institutional registrations (consortium), outside institution study requests and directed study courses. What do I do if I need to make changes to my schedule? • Make an appointment with your SSA during your first year and academic advisor thereafter to discuss the change and possible implications of adding or dropping a class (financial aid, athletic eligibility, etc.). • Complete a “Schedule Adjustment Form,” obtain the necessary signatures and then submit to the Records Office. What if I need to change my major and/or advisor? What if I want to add a second major or a minor? • Fill out a “Change or Add Major/Advisor/Catalog” form (available in the Office of Advisement or on the Office of Advisement web page under “Undergraduate Advising,” “Advising Resources”) and turn in the form to the Office of Advisement (Academic Suite in the Field Building). The same form is used to add a second major or minor. ADVISING
