Why is the Office of Spiritual Life important?

What does Chapel look like? We believe in following Jesus so much at MBU that we integrate it into our overall mission and structure. We have Chapel every Thursday at 11am 12pm during the semester. All students are expected to attend. We offer a semester boost to your GPA if you participate with Chapels and the Community Life Program. If you do not, there will be a negative impact to your GPA. See the CLP for more details.

What advice does the SSC have for new students?

• Get to know your teachers and write out the important dates and deadlines on your calendar.

• Transitioning into college might be a scary experience but take the opportunity to get to know people and get involved on campus in some way or another. This will make the transition much easier. Communicate with your professors, coaches, SSC staff, RA’s, etc.

• If you have any questions and you don’t know where to find the answers, come to the SSC. We may not have the specific answer you are looking for, but we can certainly point you in the right direction. We are even here if you just need some extra encouragement or a listening ear.

• What worked in high school may not work in college. Read all of your syllabi to make sure you understand your professors’ expectations.

• Ask yourself what success at college looks like. In four years, when you walk across the stage to receive the diploma you worked so hard to earn, what will make you say you had a successful college career?

Academic Advising (Student Success Advisor)

Is there anything special the SSC wants students to know?

Why is the SSC important for students?

Tutors majoring in fields in varying degrees are available during normal SSC hours without an appointment to assist with general education classes. The writing lab coach helps with various parts of the writing process.

• Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Utilize the services available to you as a student.

We help students with academics, but we can also help you find further resources on campus needed for your success. If you have a question or concern about anything affecting your college experience, the SSC can assist in finding the appropriate tools or departments you need in order to thrive. We exist to see you succeed!

A Student Success Advisor will advise you on classes and schedules for your degree program. Your SSA will help you navigate the resources and processes at MBU and answers many common questions and concerns that occur during your time as a Spartan. They are your point person to help you acclimate to the college experience and take the right classes to graduate. Advisors play a key role in helping students complete their degrees on time by providing knowledgeable advice on academic requirements and course selection, making schedule adjustments, and providing general career guidance. You will have a faculty mentor that is an expert in your major and will assist with internships and other details related to your field of study.

• Our services are for everyone. The SSC is not just here to help you become better at subjects you have difficulty with; we want you to succeed in all things.

Involvement at MBU outside of coursework is a vital part of the overall collegiate student experience. Research on university students suggest co curricular involvement is related to increased student learning and cognitive, psychosocial, moral and ethical development as well as students having a stronger sense of belonging, higher GPA’s and overall success rates. Students develop greater self knowledge of their talents and strengths as well as improving their leadership competence and the capacity to mobilize themselves and others to serve and work collaboratively. We affirm the choice of our students to be involved in the campus and community and student organizations provide one avenue to engage in a co curricular experience through our organizations focused on: advocacy & awareness, academic & honorary, mission & service, and special interest.
