SPRING CONFERENCE
The Spring Conference was a Success Some 90 beekeepers from around the state met with Dr. Jay Evans, of the USDA Bee Research Lab, Beltsville, Maryland, March 4, 2017 in Columbia. It was Dr. Evans first visit to Missouri where he talked about a variety of bee diseases, discussed what he saw in several dead outs and summarized research currently underway in his Maryland research lab. Beekeepers can send bee samples to his lab for a free diagnosis: https://www.ars.usda.gov/northeastarea/beltsville-md/beltsville-agricultural-researchcenter/bee-research-laboratory/docs/how-to-submitsamples/
of ideas and mutual support in the keeping of honey bees and the marketing of honey. Share our insights and passion for beekeeping to help others grow in their appreciation and enjoyment of keeping bees. Encourage the beginner beekeeper and help to establish first-time beekeepers in the success of their eorts. Become a resource of materials and equipment.
This is the first time in several years MSBA offered a workshop with some handson interaction coupled with presentations. We appreciate the comments and suggestions received about the format and will consider those when creating similar events in the future.
NEW BEE CLUB IN CASS COUNTY There is a new club starting soon! Please contact Christine Faltynowski at thekansasbeeco@yahoo.com for meetings dates and times.
NEW! A YOUTH AMBASSADOR FOR EACH REGION In past years, MSBA has held a competition for the crown of MSBA Honey Queen. We have sought contestants from across the state and the champion was awarded scholarship and afforded the opportunity to travel across the state representing MSBA and the Honey Queen program. This year the program is undergoing some changes. We decided that it would be a great idea to include young men from across the state as well. The name will be changing from the Honey Queen to the MSBA Youth Ambassador. Once the details have been ironed out, we will be taking applications from young men and young women, ages 18-24 for the Position of Youth Ambassador. Rather than having one ambassador for the all of Missouri, we will be accepting applications for an ambassador from each of the six regions of the state. The winner from each region will have opportunities to serve as an ambassador for his/her region, and will likely be called upon for various MSBA events around the state.
Please send all suggestions and nominations by email me to Jason Seetin at swarmchasers@gmail.com
