The Origin of Thanksgiving

WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?

Well, I cannot let November expire without saying something about Thanksgiving because being thankful is a powerful force for the one who is thankful and for those around them. If we could just always remember to talk about what and who we are thankful for instead of what we do not like and about what we want instead of what we do not want, oh how happy we would be!

One definition of thanksgiving is, “the expression of gratitude, especially to God.” Most of you know that the holiday season of Thanksgiving had its origin with the Pilgrims in 1621. For many of us, the meaning of Thanksgiving usually includes feasting, four-day weekends, football games, floats, family reunions, or a forerunner to Christmas festivities. The “first Thanksgiving,” however, was neither a feast nor a holiday, but a simple gathering. Having lost forty-six of the 102 original colonists to the bitter winter of 1620, the survivors yielded a bountiful harvest in 1621 and had a three-day celebration to give thanks. The next celebration was not until June of 1676.

While researching the true meaning of the holiday we call Thanksgiving, I realized that our Nation has lost and forgotten the true meaning. It is proper that we are thankful for the people, careers, health, prosperity, success as well as the insignificant things we enjoy, but we need to remember that the holiday is rooted in the founding of our country and the adversities they endured to create the great nation we live in.

George Washington proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1789 and congress finally sanctioned the holiday in 1941, at the speed of Government. Here is a verbatim copy of his proclamation.

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor-and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me `to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness.

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day of November next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be -- That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere and humble thanks -- for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country previous to their becoming a Nation--for the signal and manifold mercies, and the favorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the tranquility, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed--for the peaceable and rational manner, in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted -for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing

useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors which he hath been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon our national and other transgressions--to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually -- to render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed--to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such as have shewn kindness onto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord -- To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us -- and generally to grant unto all Mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New-York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

George Washington Amid all the things we are thankful for, I submit that the number one thing should be God and County. As I mentioned at the beginning, let us talk (and pray) about what we want for our Nation.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Giving Local Properties a Real Shine Janet Scerri

J.S. FRESH START CLEANING SERVICES

When you talk with Janet Parker Scerri, you immediately understand the level of commitment and care she brings to the job she loves … leading the efforts as Founder and Owner of J.S. Fresh Start Cleaning Services.

A Legacy of Making an Impact Janet’s introduction to the cleaning industry was deeply influenced by her mother.

“My mom used to clean St. Vincent’s Church school,” Janet recalls. “Cleaning allowed her to stay home with us, her six kids, and still help provide financially.”

This commitment to both family and work left a lasting impression on Janet. With three children of her own, Janet saw cleaning as not just a

job but a way to balance her professional and personal lives.

What started as helping friends soon evolved into a full-fledged business.

“It began with just cleaning for friends,” Janet explains. “But it grew from there, and I discovered I really enjoyed it, especially the organization involved in preparing homes for sale.”

The Joy of a Fresh Start For Janet, the true joy of her work comes from knowing she’s making a difference in people’s lives.

“I really like pleasing people and knowing that I’m able to help them have a clean environment,” she says.

This sense of purpose is particularly evident when she’s preparing homes for special occasions or new beginnings. Whether it’s for a family coming home after a long day or for someone hosting a party, Janet takes pride in making sure every detail is perfect.

“I love knowing that I’ve helped them succeed in getting everything ready,” she adds.

This commitment to excellence is especially apparent in her work with clients who are preparing to sell their homes.

“I do a lot of one-time deep cleans for move-ins and move-outs,” she points out.

These services go beyond the standard cleaning, ensuring homes look

picture-perfect and ready to impress potential buyers.

Behind the Scenes

Running J.S. Fresh Start Cleaning Services involves more than just elbow grease. Janet’s approach is both professional and personalized. She offers base estimates based on square footage or hourly rates, depending on client preferences. However, a full quote requires a personal visit to ensure accuracy and meet specific needs.

Janet’s team includes one dedicated person who works with her daily, along with backup staff for afterhours and weekend jobs. This structure allows her to handle a variety of cleaning needs efficiently.

“I can offer three types of cleans: routine, deep cleans, and real estate shines for move-ins and move-outs,” she explains.

The flexibility and attention to detail are hallmarks of her service, ensuring clients receive exactly what they need.

I love knowing that I’ve helped them succeed in getting everything ready.

Balancing Work and Family

Janet is dedicated to her family and enjoys various activities that allow her to unwind and connect with her loved ones.

She loves spending time on the river jet skiing with her husband and visiting Orlando to see her daughter. A highlight of her leisure time is visiting her son, and exploring the rugged beauty of Big Sky, Montana, where she enjoys hiking in the mountains. Her three dogs also keep her company, adding to the joy of her personal life.

A Clear Advantage

Janet’s business philosophy is built on a foundation of trust and reliability. Her clients appreciate her loyalty, dependability, honesty, and care.

“I always go above and beyond,” Janet says.

These values have helped her establish a strong reputation in the community, where she is known for her commitment to providing exceptional service.

With over 12 years of experience in the cleaning industry, Janet has honed her skills and developed a keen understanding of her clients’ needs. Her approach combines years of expertise with a personal touch, ensuring that every job is done with the utmost care and professionalism.

As J.S. Fresh Start Cleaning Services continues to grow, Janet remains focused on maintaining the high standards that have made her business successful. She understands the importance of a clean and organized home, and she takes pride in offering services that make a tangible difference in her clients’ lives.

Janet’s story is a reminder of how passion, dedication, and a commitment to family values can lead to a rewarding career. Whether it’s through routine cleaning, deep cleans, or preparing homes for sale, Janet Parker Scerri is making sure that every client’s fresh start begins with a sparkling touch.

Jackson Lauren

“My introduction into sales was summers selling sno cones on the beach in Orange Beach, Alabama,” Lauren Jackson recalls with a chuckle. “I also sold designer denim out of a van that was covered in jeans after college!”

Lauren’s sales career has certainly come a long way since slinging sno cones, but her true passion has always been real estate. Today, as a successful Realtor with Courtney and Morris Real Estate, Lauren continues to thrive on helping clients achieve their dreams while fulfilling her own.

THE LEAP

Lauren grew up in Mobile and attended St. Paul’s Episcopal High School before heading to the University of Alabama, where she earned a degree in psychology. After college, she moved to New Orleans, where her sales career began with The Blue Jean Bar, a company that had her selling designer denim across the Southeast and beyond.

After returning to Mobile in 2015 with her husband, Charles, Lauren took on a role managing memberships and events at The Exchange, a coworking space downtown.

“It was a great way to meet people and made for a wonderful transition into real estate,” she notes.

But it wasn’t until her husband encouraged her to go all-in that Lauren took the plunge.

“Charles was very supportive and believed in me,” she reflects. “He encouraged me to leave my job, take some time off to study and get licensed, and focus on getting my real estate career up and running.

“I always knew I wanted to do real estate, but I was scared to put myself out there and take the leap,” she continues. “I had a new baby at the time and I realized it’s now or never because life was only going to get busier.”

Lauren didn’t jump into real estate alone. She and her lifelong friend, Adelaide McAleer, both took the leap together, starting their real estate careers at the same time.

“We didn’t plan it, but once one of us decided to go for it, the other did too,” she smiles.

Now, the two friends often team up on deals and enjoy the

Lauren credits much of her success to the supportive and collaborative culture at Courtney and Morris Real Estate.

“I’ve received all kinds of support and plenty of mentorship,” she acknowledges. “We have a very boutique culture, and it feels personal. We all practice real estate in the same manner, and we have a good time together, too!”

For Lauren, the joy of being a Realtor is the number of relationships she has built while helping others through a stressful time.

“I would define success in my business by the amount of referrals I receive from friends, family, and colleagues,” she emphasizes. “That means a lot to me.”

“It also is very fulfilling to be at the closing table with a family beaming with happiness for their new house. So much of ‘life’ happens in our homes, it is really special.”

RELATIONSHIPS FIRST

Lauren’s approach to real estate is all about putting her clients’ needs above her own.

“I run my business with my buyers and sellers at the top of my priority list every day,” she affirms. “I am available 24/7, and I am knowledgeable. If I don’t know the answer to something, I will find it out.”

partnership that has grown from their shared beginnings.

A BALANCING ACT

Last year, Lauren took some time off to focus on family after the birth of her third child; however, she’s back in full force now, and her projections for this year reflect it. She already has $5 million closed and is hoping to double that volume before the end of 2024.

What also sets Lauren apart is her commitment to always being in the loop on market trends and the latest information.

“I work hard to always be in the know about new properties coming soon, off-market sales,, and just always listening when a potential client tells me they would sell,” she explains. “I try to have good relationships with other agents I work with often so we can work together for our buyers and sellers, too.”

Lauren is quick to offer this same advice to new agents, encouraging them to become experts in their local areas.

“Go prepared at every showing with comparable sales and information that your buyer won’t have on hand already,” she advises. “And for sellers, give them advice on ways to improve their property before listing that will add value without costing much!”

OFF THE CLOCK

Beyond her work, Lauren’s pride and joy is her young family. Her and Charles have been married for nearly 10 years, and together they have three children: Hartwell (7), Chip (4), and Edward (1).

“Charles works at Thames Batre Insurance, and we love spending time at my parents’ beach house in Orange Beach, Alabama,” Lauren shares.

The Jackson family also includes a 12-year-old Golden Retriever named Sadie, who Lauren describes as “the sweetest.”

When she’s not working or spending time with her family, Lauren enjoys playing tennis and Mahjong with girlfriends, and her family are also active members of St. Ignatius Church.

As she looks to the future, Lauren is excited about continuing to grow her career in real estate and open to exploring new avenues of opportunity down the road. Long-term, Lauren has her sights set on obtaining her broker’s license to gain more knowledge to better serve her clients as well.

“I’d like to get into commercial real estate when the timing is right, perhaps when my children are older,” she concludes. “I’m really lucky to work for a company that services both sides of the bay with residential and commercial sales. Ultimately, I just want to keep growing and learning every year while helping as many people as I can.”

KATIE DUNCAN

rising star

FROM SILVER TO CEO

Katie Duncan is Mobile Bay Real Producer’s Rising Star for the month of November and some of her fondest childhood memories recall imaginary games played around the office inside her father’s Gulf Shores real estate brokerage. “My dad is Forrest Floyd. He was an agent who opened his own brokerage in Gulf Shores, and I grew up in Magnolia Springs.” Duncan said.

Equally gifted intellectually, her favorite classes ranged from science, math and law, to painting and pottery.

In due course, Duncan adapted to different environments well. “I moved around a lot growing up, going into elementary school in Baldwin County, moving to Mississippi for boarding school, transferring to high school in Tennessee to live with my mother for a while and finishing at Fairhope High School. All the environments were very different, but I was able to adapt and make new friends, and very thankful for all the relationships built through the years.” she said.

After graduation, Katie initially wanted to pursue a career in law.

“My grandfather was a well-known criminal defense attorney and passed away in 2003. Law was interesting, and initially felt like the path I wanted to pursue. I then decided to get my paralegal degree from Faulkner Community College.” Katie said.

“I started working as paralegal at a law firm in Mobile that knew my grandfather. During that time, I learned how to be better organized, handled dictation as well as review and write contracts and was intrigued with trial preparation. It was very interesting work.” she added.

Katie was an honor student who had an omnivorous interest in virtually everything, active in athletic endeavors encompassing softball, basketball, soccer, cross country, gymnastics, sailing and horseback riding.

In 2014, after years in the profession, Duncan stepped away after learning that she was expecting the birth of her son, Jaxon, and spent the next three years as a stay-athome mother.

In 2016, the first sparks of interest Katie felt for real estate were ignited.

“Being a stay-at-home mom in my first home, there naturally were some things I wanted to update. I also really loved the show ‘Fixer Upper’ and was interested in potentially flipping houses. That was the epiphany moment motivating me to find out what real estate was all about.” Katie said.

Photos By Tyler Ertzberger, Captured by Tyler

“The next day, I went straight to my dad and told him that about wanting to get into real estate. He was excited, very supportive and told me all I needed to do was study, pass my real estate exam and hang my license with a broker. After completing it in 2017, I went to work for Bellator Real Estate - Orange Beach” she continued.

Duncan started out initially with a mentor at her office but soon decided to find her own path in terms of building her client base.

“Melissa White was a great agent at our office that I initially shadowed for a few weeks. After that, I got out there as a single agent and started calling on for sale by owner properties. I would also do my homework with tax records and looking up phone numbers to research them.” Duncan said. Katie did this while also taking care of her young child at the time, having the flexibility to balance work / life duties adroitly. “There were still nap times and the responsibility associated with taking care of my son but, when running errands, we would also drive around and look for sale by owner signs. I had eight listings in my first four months in the business.” she said.

Duncan’s annual sales volume averaged a respectable $5 million for her first few years of production, and then she hit her stride in 2021 by attaining $11 million in volume. “I went from Silver to CEO in our rankings, and the increase had a lot to do with the relationships and trust engendered over the years. I also added my Florida license in 2020. and currently about 30 percent of my business come from there. These referrals are from local agents who don’t work in Florida, and clients who are on the fence about wanting to buy either in Alabama or Florida.” she said.

relocating to the Bellator - Fairhope office, she attributes her adaptability with new surroundings and making quick connections with people from all walks of life as a few of the cornerstones for her rapid rise to success in her chosen profession.

Inspired by her father, Katie picked up her broker’s license in 2021. To date, her best production year has been 2022, closing $13.5 million in volume. Recently

Accordingly, she has adjusted quickly to the recent NAR settlement regulations in terms of sustaining her business growth. “Before showing a property, my buyers are made aware that they are now required to offer a commission with the new settlement guidelines. I then call the listing agent and ask if they are offering a commission so my clients know upfront if they should expect to pay me out of pocket, or if the seller is willing to offer that. It’s a very straightforward process.” Duncan said.

Home Is Where The Heart Is

Jordan

Doole

A Heart to Serve Business school. Cosmetology.

Logistics. These are all career paths Jordan Doole took on her journey to real estate, but nothing suited her the way that sales do.

“It’s not about the money, it’s about the relationships, the comradery, giving back to the community… taking pride in what we do for people, not just for a paycheck”, Jordan emphasized, when describing why she loves her career in real estate. “Money comes and goes. I’ve seen a lot of that over the years”, she added.

It is no wonder Jordan views her career in this way since her love language is “giving”. She even turned the birthday shopping trip her husband gave her into an opportunity to give,

by buying things for him because it made her happy.

Jordan and her husband, Zachary (a native of Grand Bay), have been together for 15 years, married for six. They live on a 10-acre farm in Lucedale, MS[1] with their daughter, a (dachshund) dog, goats, chickens, ducks, and horses. “My mother’s family originated from Greece and she is a fourth-generation resident of Dauphin Island”, Jordan shared, mentioning how she ended up back “home”.

Going Back Home

After working for Clayton Homes for almost three years, Jordan felt called to start her career in real estate where she could continue carrying out her passion for sales. So she pushed herself and obtained her real estate license.

When it was time to determine which real estate company she should join, Jordan reached out to a friend who was working for Suzanne, Broker/ Owner at Coldwell Banker Smith Homes. “It just so happened that Suzanne was looking for an assistant at the time”, Jordan explained. So, in 2021, Jordan came to work for Suzanne “by chance” and joined the Coldwell Banker Smith Homes family.

Along Jordan’s career path, she worked in finance for Tower Loans, where an interest in financing and selling loans was sparked. That later ignited her interest in working for Clayton Homes in 2018. During her time there, Jordan was named the “top producing agent” in Gulfport, MS.

We’re here to uplift our community and bring something back to these towns that are trying to grow. We would like to help them grow.

“Suzanne and I worked so well together”, revealed Jordan. “Even though I wasn’t selling homes at the time”, she added.

Then one day, she and Suzanne had a “crazy idea” to go back to Jordan’s hometown. “The market over there is not saturated. There’s not a lot of brokerages over there”, Jordan identified. So, together, the two planted their real estate roots in the area of Bayou La[2] Batre in

Jordan has now advanced to “managing broker” at Coldwell Banker Smith Homes, where she helps lead 13 real estate agents on their team. She’s also actively involved in the Chamber of Commerce for both Dauphin Island and

“We’re the new kids in town… not very well-known, but we’re making an impact”,

While she is still one of these new kids in town, Jordan is already having a successful 2024. One of the professional goals she set for herself was to sell 25 homes this year, which she is currently only five

“I hope to be a top agent for Coldwell Banker Smith Homes, both in AL and MS”, Jordan shared, since she is now licensed in both states.

Jordan passionately shared the following words about their brokerage, “We’re here for Bayou La Batre, Grand Bay,[4] Theodore, Irvington, West Mobile”. These are the

“forgotten areas” as she calls them, since she says that people generally look for homes in Mobile.[5]

“Giving back”, Jordan describes, “helping people find their forever homes. That’s what we’re about at Coldwell Banker Smith Homes”.

Leaving A Legacy

Jordan’s mother is a partner with her and Suzanne at their Coldwell Banker Smith Homes AL brokerage.

“Our goal is to leave a legacy”, Jordan shared excitedly. “Leaving something that we fought for and that we dreamed of.”

Family is very important to Jordan, who stated, “A personal goal of mine is to make sure my family is happy, healthy, and thriving”.

As for one of her professional goals, she aims to put Coldwell Banker Smith Homes “on the map”. Jordan went on to say that she wants it to be something somebody else calls home.

More specifically, she wants all the agents at their brokerage to feel ful filled and successful there. “I want them all to be a part of something bigger.”

“We’re here to uplift our community and bring something back to these towns that are trying to grow”, she shared.

“We would like to help them grow.”

When asked what advice she would give to up-and-coming top producers, Jordan shared the following advice, “Invest in yourself. Invest time in yourself and your team”.

“I was not looking to be a top producer. I gave back to the business that supported me… the company that supported my career[6] “, Jordan

humbly shared. “If you focus on the company that you’re with and how you can make them better, then the business grows. That’s how you become a top producer.”

Jordan will surely take part in leaving a legacy, given her passion for giving back to her AL community. “We’re here for AL and their community. We want to serve and do whatever we can for the clients and people here in Mobile County and Baldwin County.”

Home is where the heart is, and for Jordan, her heart resides in those “forgotten” areas.

“Real Producers Magazine is an excellent platform for fostering connections with fellow agents and brokers, offering invaluable industry knowledge. Furthermore, it serves as an exceptional source for locating licensed vendors catering to the diverse, everyday needs within the real estate profession.”

Tracy Womack – RE/MAX Signature Properties, Mobile

“Mobile Bay Real Producers Magazine is a big supporter of the Real Estate industry in general. They work hard to make sure the public knows who the Real Estate agents are that are well connected, knowledgeable & giving back to the communities we live in. They also do a great job of connecting their readers with high quality resources from anything such as attorneys to heating and air companies. I always love to read the magazine every month!”

Stan Szapiel – Caribe Realty Inc., Orange Beach

“I cannot express how impressed I have been with the article I was featured in for Mobile Bay Real Producers. As the on-site Broker for Caribe Resort / Caribe Realty in Orange Beach, Alabama, this article has not only had an impact to our local market, but several of my clients from around the country called to congratulate me. Many of the guests that visit our resort come back every year and I have come to know them over the course of my employment. This article was greatly embraced by some of our long- term guests and clients who have purchased property from me. To this day I keep a copy or two in the sales office which gives me instant credibility to the buyers and sellers of Caribe Resort condominiums. I must say, not only did I get an ego boost, but my clients could not congratulate me more on such a fine article.”

Many thanks to the team at Mobile Bay Real Producers!

Pam Stein – Roberts Brothers Realty, Fairhope

“The magazine got me a lot of recognition and great reviews from my friends and clients. I felt like it was very classy, and the article was well written. Thanks for this great opportunity”.
