J.W.Speaker -77 year history John W. Speaker who developed products for the automotive aftermarket founded the J.W. Speaker Corporation in 1935. Early products included tire repair equipment and kits, radiator fronts, car and truck mirrors and automotive lighting. In the early 1940s J.W. Speaker developed the Heatab®, a miniature portable stove, and the “P38” GI can opener both of which were widely used during World War II through to the late 1970s. In 1960, under the leadership of Jack Speaker (John’s son), the J.W. Speaker Corporation shifted its focus to specializing in OEM vehicle lighting initially for lawn & garden and golf & turf tractors. Since then, J.W. Speaker has developed and specialized in a variety of lighting projects for other OEM in agriculture, construction, heavy commercial, material handling, mining, motorcycle, recreation, marine, aviation, railroad and aftermarket applications. Today J.W. Speaker is led by John’s grandsons Tim and Jamie Speaker. The company is focused on developing innovative lighting solutions for customers around the world. J.W. Lighting Terminology
Lighting Terminology The world of lighting has undergone many changes in the last century. The up-side of this is that we now enjoy some of the brightest, longest-lasting, and most efficient lighting options the world has ever seen. The down-side is that these technological advances have led to an abundance of terminology that many people find confusing. The purpose of this page is to explain some of the most common terms in a way that makes them easy to understand...no science degrees required.
Watts & Lumens Let’s start off with a little quiz. If you have two lights in front of you, one being 75 watts & another 100 watts, which will produce more light? Most people would probably say the 100 watt light, but that’s not necessarily the correct answer. Truth be told, we can’t know the correct answer because watts isn’t a measure of light output. Watts is actually a measure of total power output. You see, not all of the energy emitted by a light source is visible light – heat and invisible light waves (ex. infrared light) are also emitted. Lumens, on the other hand, will tell you the total visible light output of a source. For this reason, lumens (not watts) is the relevant unit of measure when you’re concerned about visibility.
Candlepower & Candela Once the predominant unit of measure used to describe the intensity of a light source in a particular direction, the term “candlepower” has gone the way of the dinosaur. The new standard unit of measure (which happens to be a direct equivalent to candlepower) is the “candela.” One candela is close to the light intensity produced by an ordinary candle as perceived by the human eye and addresses how bright a light source is in a particular direction. The candela is similar to the lumen in that both deal with light output as perceived by the human eye, but the key difference is that the lumen measures the total visible light output, whereas the candela addresses directional intensity (see the illustration on the right).
Foot-Candles & Lux Last, but not least, are the foot-candle and lux. Both units measure the same thing – the amount of visible light that falls on a surface. The key difference between the two is that the foot-candle uses the Imperial measuring system (feet, pounds, etc.), while the lux uses the metric system (meters, grams, etc.). To better understand the foot-candle, imagine that you have a one candela light source located in the center of a sphere. If the radius of that sphere is a distance of one foot, a foot-candle is the amount of light that falls on the inside surface of that sphere. For the lux, take that same example and simply change the radius of the sphere to a distance of one meter – the amount of light falling on the inside surface of the sphere would be one lux. See the illustration below for a visual depiction of these measurements and how they relate to one another. If you ever need to convert between foot-candles and lux, the rule of thumb is that one foot-candle is approximately equal to 10.764 lux.

This being the case, it stands to reason that lights are one of the most important (if not the most important) safety features on your vehicle. Superior Visibility Hands down, the most significant advantage that LED lights have over traditional lights is the visibility they provide. LED lights produce a crisp, clean, bright white light that effectively turns night into day. A really well-designed LED light will meet all of the necessary regulatory standards, eliminate glare for oncoming traffic, and have a beam pattern that puts light exactly where you need it most! The photograph on the left shows a side-by-side comparison of halogen and LED lights (halogen on the left, LED on the right). Notice that the beam pattern of the LED lights covers more area and that the quality of the light represents a significant improvement over the bulb-based lighting. The photograph on the right clearly illustrates the powerful illumination that LED lighting provides. Extreme Durability LEDs utilize solid-state construction – meaning that there are no breakable bulbs, fragile filaments, or sensitive electrodes like those found in incandescent, halogen, or HID lighting. Unmatched Longevity Another advantage that LEDs have over traditional lights is their superior lifespan. One LED light will out-live 300+ incandescent lights, 50+ halogen lights, or 20+ HID lights. Install LED lights and it’s likely you’ll have to replace your vehicle before you have to replace the lights!
Promote Alertness We’ve all seen news stories about the deadly consequences of falling asleep at the wheel, but did you know that the type of headlights you use can be a significant factor in either causing or preventing driving fatigue? Studies show that our body’s internal clock (called the circadian rhythm) is linked to the cycle of night and day. More specifically, our brains interpret the color temperature of light we’re exposed to and then tell the body whether we should be alert or at rest. Traditional headlights have a color temperature that closely resembles sunset – the time of day that our brain tells the body to prepare for sleep. LED headlights, on the other hand, closely mimic the characteristics of a bright noon day sun when the body is most awake. As you can see from the color temperature scale to the right (measured in degrees Kelvin), traditional lights have a color temperature signature that closely resembles sunset - when our brain tells our body that it is time to prepare for sleep. LED lights, on the other hand, closely mimic the characteristics of a bright noon day sun when the body is most awake.

Raw vs. Effective Lumens

Raw vs. Effective Lumens With the popularity of LED forward lighting on the rise, you are going to increasingly see the term “lumen” used to describe light output. The lumen is, simply put, a unit of measure used to describe the total visible light output emitted by a light source. Because many people base purchasing decisions solely on visual output, many LED lighting manufacturers are boasting high lumen numbers on product literature & packaging. What they may fail to clarify, however, is whether these big numbers are the raw lumen output or the effective lumen output. One is a theoretical number that fails to account for real world losses in output, while the other is a highly-accurate measurement that does account for real world factors. Raw lumens are theoretical rather than the actual measure of useful light output. Manufacturers calculate raw lumen output by multiplying the number of LEDs in a light by their maximum output rating. For example, if a light uses 10 LEDs that have a maximum output rating of 100 lumens, the raw lumen output would be 1,000 lumens (10 x 100 = 1,000). No photometric testing is necessary to come up with this number. The reason this is an unreliable metric is because it does not take into account real world factors that can decrease light output by as much as 75 percent. A couple of real world factors will always decrease light output. First are thermal losses. It is not uncommon for LEDs to reach temperatures as high as 212ºF (100ºC) in short period of time. The hotter LEDs become, the less light they produce. LED manufacturers calculate their maximum output ratings by measuring the light output of the component LEDs after 25 milliseconds — the equivalent in duration to the burst of a flash bulb. Any operator who uses LED lighting for longer than 25 milliseconds at a time is going to experience hotter LEDs, and therefore lower light output compared to the maximum output ratings. How much less will depend on the thermal management and current drive of the light, but the loss is typically in the neighborhood of 10 to 25 percent. Second, when light travels through or reflects off of a material such as optics or lenses, it loses some of its intensity. Any LED light that uses optics, reflector optics or a lens will unavoidably fall victim to these losses. Couple these optical losses with assembly variations, and the result is an additional 20-50 percent decrease in light output that the raw lumen figure does not account for. Effective lumens don’t leave you in the dark because they are an actual measurement that takes into account all of these real world losses. Measuring the effective lumen output of a light requires the use of high-tech photometry equipment. Because of the cost and expertise involved, some manufacturers opt to cut corners and simply use the theoretical raw lumen numbers. This makes an apples-to-apples comparison between lights very difficult, and often leaves consumers relying on less useable light than advertised. Here is a practical example: • LED light No. 1 has an output rating of 2,000 raw lumens and 1,000 effective lumens. • LED light No. 2 has an output rating of 3,000 raw lumens, but only 500 effective lumens. Based solely on raw lumens, No. 2 would be the clear choice. However, turn both lights on and light No. 1 would be twice as bright as light No. 2 because it has the higher effective lumen output. To get the entire picture, J.W. Speaker encourages you to challenge manufacturers and lighting sales reps to provide both the raw and the effective output numbers. 8

Electromagnetic Interference
Introduction
Whether you’re an engineer at an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) looking to specify lights for a new vehicle, or an end-user looking to replace some lights on your vehicle, electromagnetic interference (EMI) is something you should know about. If you’re not familiar with “EMI,” the term refers to a disturbance that affects an electrical circuit. If you’ve ever experienced reception issues with your AM/FM radio when your cell phone rings (or vice versa), that’s a perfect example of a problem caused by EMI. Lights can both cause and be the victim of EMI issues in your vehicle. For this reason, it is important to have a basic understanding of EMI and look for lights that have been adequately tested.
The Five Types of EMI
There are five main types of EMI that you should be aware of: • Radiated Emissions – Electromagnetic noise emitted by a light through the air that can interfere with other electronics (ex. cell phones, radios, etc.). • Conducted Emissions – Electromagnetic noise conducted down a power line in a vehicle which can interfere with other electronic components on the vehicle. • Radiated Immunity – The tolerance of a light to inbound electromagnetic noise in the atmosphere. Any broadcast signal (cell phone, radio tower, non-compliant electronics, etc.) can interfere with a light if it is not properly designed. • Conducted Immunity – The tolerance of a light to inbound electromagnetic noise conducted on vehicle power lines. • Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) – As a kid, you probably experienced shuffling your feet on carpeting and touching someone to give them a shock. This phenomenon is called electrostatic discharge (ESD) and can damage any electrical component – lights included.
Component Level vs. Vehicle Level
For OEM applications, lighting manufacturers focus on testing their products at a component (light) level. This is done to make sure that the lights will not cause a vehicle level EMI failure or interfere with other electronics on the vehicle. OEMs then test at a vehicle level to ensure that it meets regulatory requirements.

For custom products, we design, test, and manufacture to meet your exact specifications. IP (Ingress Protection) Ratings The IP Code outlines a system of classification for the protection of electrical enclosures against the intrusion of foreign bodies ( i.e. tools, fingers, dust, etc. ) and moisture. The system of classification was specified by the International Electrotechnical Commission and is officially designated as IEC 60529. The rating is specified by the letters IP followed by two digits i.e. IP25, IP68, etc.
First Number - Degree of ingress protection The first number of the IP code indicates the degree of protection against contact with moving parts and the degree that the equipment is protected against solid foreign bodies intruding into an enclosure.
0 - No protection provided. 1 - Protection against entry of objects larger than 50 square mm. 2 - Protection against entry of objects larger than 12 square mm. 3 - Protection against entry of objects larger than 2.5 square mm.

ASABE Standards American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers regulations for agricultural equipment.
SAE Standards SAE International (SAE), formerly the Society of Automotive Engineers, is a professional organization for mobility engineering professionals in the aerospace, automotive, and commercial vehicle industries. The Society is a standards development organization for the engineering of powered vehicles of all kinds, including cars, trucks, boats, aircraft, and others. The SAE standards are mainly used in the US and Canada and do not recognize ECE approvals.
ECE Standards The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Transport Division has been providing secretariat services to the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations for more than 50 years. The World Forum has incorporated into its regulatory framework the technological innovations of vehicles to make them safer and more environmentally sound. Most countries, even if not formally participating in the 1958 agreement, recognize the ECE Regulations and either mirror the ECE Regulations’ content in their own national requirements

(ex. Australian Design Rules:- ADR’s), or permit the use and importation of ECE-approved vehicles, or both.
UL Recognized Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) is an independent product safety certification organization. Based in Northbrook, Illinois, UL develops standards and test procedures for products, materials, components, assemblies, tools and equipment, chiefly dealing with product safety. UL also evaluates and certifies the efficiency of a company’s business processes through its management system registration programs. Additionally, UL analyzes drinking and other clean water samples through its drinking water laboratory in South Bend, Indiana and evaluates products for environmental sustainability through its subsidiary, UL Environment. UL is one of several companies approved for such testing by the U.S. federal agency OSHA. OSHA maintains a list of approved testing laboratories, known as Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories.
CE Recognized The CE marking (also known as CE mark) is a mandatory conformity mark on many products placed on the single market in the European Economic Area (EEA). The CE marking certifies that a product has met EU consumer safety, health or environmental requirements.

This informational piece was created in response to the many great questions our customers have had about LED headlight technology. Because the technology is so new, advances are being made so rapidly, and most manufacturers haven’t done an adequate job of educating their customers, we’ve seen a lot of confusion in the marketplace. Our goal, therefore, is to provide you with a good foundational understanding of the true benefits of LED technology for headlight applications. LEDs utilize solid-state construction - meaning that there are no breakable bulbs, fragile filaments, or sensitive electrodes like those found in incandescent, halogen, or HID lighting. For this reason, LEDs are the perfect choice for vehicle applications where bumps, curves and pot holes would cause traditional headlights to prematurely fail.
HID headlights have the unfortunate tendency to produce electromagnetic interference (EMI) – causing a variety of complications for OEM and aftermarket customers alike. A properly designed LED headlight, on the other hand, will be much “quieter” from an EMI perspective. At J.W. Speaker, we design our lights to meet ECE Reg. 10, SAE 1455, CISPR 22 & 25, military standards, and/or special customer requirements for EMI.
With no filaments to burn out, no bulbs to change, and no moving parts to fail, LED systems have the lowest maintenance costs of any lighting technology. Maintenance reduction is a major component of the cost effectiveness for implementing LED technology.
One of the key technical advantages that LED headlights have to offer is their energy efficiency. The growth of vehicle electronics and the ballooning cost of fuel have created a need for high efficiency vehicle components to minimize the load on the alternator and the drain on the battery. LED drivers (>80% efficiency) coupled with high lumen-per-watt LEDs create a winning solution to keep the required battery current low.
If you’ve ever been blinded by oncoming headlights, you can appreciate just how important it is to minimize glare. LED headlights create clear, high-contrast light which offers excellent visibility. We’ve all seen news stories about the deadly consequences of falling asleep behind the wheel, but did you know that the type of headlights you use can be a significant factor in either causing or preventing driving fatigue? Studies show that our body’s internal clock (called the circadian rhythm) is linked to the cycle of night and day. More specifically, our brains interpret the color temperature of light we’re exposed to and then tell the body whether we should be alert or at rest. Traditional headlights have a color temperature signature that closely resembles sunset – when our brain tells our body that it is time to prepare for sleep. LED headlights, on the other hand, closely mimic the characteristics of a bright noon day sun when the body is most awake.

The 700 BLU projects a large blue spot onto the floor a few meters ahead in the direction of travel to act as a warning to pedestrians. How Does Thermal Imaging Work?
With our eyes, we see visible light. With a thermal imaging camera, we can see heat. Thermal Imaging cameras detect subtle differences in temperature and display them as black and white video: warmer objects appear light and cooler objects appear dark. They accomplish this by detecting and displaying differences in heat which are invisible to the naked eye. Notice how the ice in the girl’s left hand appears completely black. The differences in heat don’t have to be very big for a thermal imaging camera to see them clearly either. Notice how the slightest friction from the girl’s finger and the heat from her hand leave enough heat on the wall to show up clearly to the thermal imaging camera. Just imagine how much more heat vehicles, people, and animals give off!
See 4x Further than Headlights!
Even under ideal conditions, headlights only let drivers see about 450 feet straight ahead and almost nothing to either side. Large vehicles like commercial trucks can take a long time to stop, so they easily outrun their headlights when driving at highway speeds. Thermal imaging cameras provide you with the necessary visibility to see pedestrians over 1,000 feet away, and vehicles even further – giving you more time to react, and more room to stop. They provide you with superior visibility in dark or extreme environments where headlights fall short - conditions such as rain, snow, fog or smoke. Because thermal imaging cameras don’t rely on light, you can see clearly up to 1,800 feet in total darkness!

Overview
Infrared light is defined as the band of invisible light found between microwaves and visible light on the electromagnetic spectrum (see the illustration below). Because it is invisible to the naked eye, infrared light has found use in military and commercial applications where visibility is desirable, but visible light is not (ex. night vision). Most applications combine an infrared lighting source with a camera to create an infrared visibility system.
One common misperception is that infrared lighting and thermal imaging are the same thing. Infrared lighting “illuminates” an object with invisible wavelengths of light, which can then be visualized using a camera and monitor. Thermal imaging, on the other hand, utilizes a special camera & monitor to pick up subtle differences in surface temperature by detecting infrared radiation that’s emitted from an object. Infrared lighting systems do not require heat emissions from an object in order to see it.
Traditional IR Lights
Traditionally, infrared lights combine an incandescent, halogen or HID lamp with a special lens that only allows the infrared wavelengths to pass through. While relatively inexpensive and widely available, this approach has several shortfalls: 1.Because these technologies have breakable bulbs, fragile filaments, and/or sensitive electrodes, they are ill-suited for applications where bumps, curves and pot holes will cause premature failure. 2.Bulb technology-based lights burn out relatively quickly and need to be changed. Not only do you have to purchase replacement bulbs, but there are costs associated with changing out the bulbs and the downtime experienced while the maintenance is performed. 3.Traditional IR lights are completely reliant on the integrity of the seals and special lens in order to be effective – should either be broken, the light is no longer “invisible.”
IRED Lights – Superior Technology
Thanks to advances in technology, infrared emitting diodes (IREDs) provide a much more durable, efficient, and long-lasting solution for infrared lighting applications. IREDs are a variety of light emitting diodes (LEDs) which generate light energy in only the infrared wavelength. Because they are a solid-state technology (no breakable bulbs, fragile filaments or moving parts), they are ideal for rough & rugged applications where shock and vibration are present. From a longevity perspective, IREDs out-live incandescent bulbs 300-to-1, halogen bulbs 50-to-1, and HID bulbs 20-to-1. Best of all, the infrared “filtering” is built right into the diodes themselves, so there is no reliance on breakable seals or special lenses.

And while the wide variety of configurations provide flexibility, rest assured that all of our light bars feature the same heavy duty construction and optimized performance you’ve come to expect from J.W. Speaker. We understand the importance of visibility on the worksite, and that is why we’ve hand-selected some of our best worklights and strobe lights to be incorporated into our light bars. Their time-tested performance (both in durability and illumination) means that you’ll experience higher productivity and increased safety – both of which impact the bottom line. They come fully assembled and wired. From construction to forestry, and maintenance of way to mining, our heavy duty light bars are the best value you can find! All of our heavy duty light bars are based around two main configurations (one appears below, and the other on the next page). We suggest that you begin by reading what features/components come standard with each configuration. Once you’ve identified the base configuration that best suits your needs, you’ll want to reference the diagram and matrix of corresponding part numbers. The diagram provides a visual representation of the various light options and where they will be located on the light bar. Use the product matrix as a quick reference tool to identify the type (and quantity) of lights associated with each part number. Model 9049 LED Light Bars are here! These LED light bars are specifically designed for heavy duty applications where vibration and adverse conditions are the norm. The rugged, solid state LEDs and durable die-cast housing will withstand extreme shock and vibration that cause bulb-based lights to fail. You’ll also love the high-powered, white light output and low current draw. Unlike HID (which has a high in-rush current and can cause electromagnetic interference problems), the Model 9049 is extremely energy efficient and has been designed to minimize the effects of EMI. An investment in superior visibility and safety, the Model 9049 is warrantied for 40,000 hours of continuous use and promises to deliver a powerful punch of light to illuminate the darkness! Remote Controlled Version Available! While the installation of our standard 9049 involves hooking up an in-cab on/off switch, the remote-controlled version requires nothing more than simply pressing a button on the programmable key fob. Available with the 4-module version only, this convenient option allows you to cycle through various combinations of lights being turned on & off with ease. One key fob comes standard with the remotecontrolled version, however, additional fobs can be ordered at the time of purchase and come pre-programmed for your light.

J.W. Speaker’s LED number boards were specifically designed for applications that rely on visibility as a key component of on-the-job safety. We understand that mining and other industrial applications can be hard on vehicle number boards. Shock, vibration, dirt and sludge often take a heavy toll on traditional reflective and high contrast signage. Our family of LED number boards not only overcome these challenges, but because they’re programmable, they can be used (and reused) on any piece of equipment - eliminating the need for custom-made number boards. Each of our LED number boards consists of a powdercoated steel frame, epoxy lens, and high intensity LED light array. The heavy duty steel frame is easy to install and provides protection against the harsh elements and impacts associated with industrial use. The LEDs are maintenance-free and cleaning is as simple as spraying the sign down with water. The number board automatically dims or brightens based on ambient lighting conditions for maximum visibility, and an intuitive programming switch (sold separately) allows for quick, on-site changes to the display. The optional CANbus interface module allows the number sign to interface with inputs such as vehicle load sensors. These signs have been designed for continuous industrial use and carry a 4-year limited warranty.
