NEWS You Can Use Star Aviation Continues to Support Integration of Wi-Fi on Aircraft
This prototype wire harness kit was engineered by Star Aviation, and is key to providing wireless Internet to passengers. Star has a contract with Alaska Airlines for 105 planes and is also providing on-site installation support.
While the photo above depicts a clump of wires to the untrained eye, this electrical wire harness and structural mounting kit designed by Mobile-based Star Aviation will provide Wi-Fi to Alaska Airlines’ passengers in the near future. Star Aviation recently won its second contract from Aircell to provide the structural and electrical engineering design, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification and manufacturing of custom electrical wire harnesses and structural mounting kits – all necessary to install Aircell’s Gogo® in-flight broadband system on the Alaska Airlines aircraft fleet. Star Aviation is also providing on-site installation support of the system.
Any time there are changes to an aircraft it must be FAA approved, and officials must be assured there was an engineering process involved, explained Sara Clark, the company’s marketing coordinator. Star Aviation last year won a similar contract with Aircell to modify Air Tran’s fleet. “This is the next wave of technology for the airline industry. Customers want Wi-fi everywhere and airlines are trying to stay competitive and attract customers,” said Clark. Aircell, the in-flight broadband network provider of Gogo®, the company’s broadband system, is equipping Alaska Airlines fleet that includes 105 aircraft in 2010.
Staying on the Radar
Ranked among the 200 largest metropolitan statistical areas, Mobile landed at No. 62 in Forbes.com’s annual Best Places for Business and Careers list. Both projected economic growth and projected job growth categories earned the No. 5 rank. “Mobile area businesses such as Aker Solutions and ST Aerospace Mobile are winning high-profile contracts, ThyssenKrupp is getting ready to start operations and Austal USA and EADS North America are competing for huge military projects – that is what continues to give our area strength in the job growth category. Jobs and new contracts build the economy,” said Troy Wayman, the Mobile Area Chamber’s vice president of economic development. Wayman also mentioned the area’s growing aviation and technology sectors as a continuous draw to the area. According to the Forbes data, Mobile also landed in the top 18 percent in income growth at No. 23; job growth, No. 34; and the cost of doing business category, No. 35.
Alorica Announces Strategic Investment in Ryla Inc. “We are as committed to the Mobile area today as we were when we launched a year ago, and we remain focused on continued growth,” said Mark Wilson, Ryla Inc.’s chief executive officer, following an announcement that California-based Alorica Inc. would make a strategic investment in Kennesaw, Ga.-based Ryla. Ryla, a company providing outsourced call center and customer contact solutions to Fortune 500 companies, government agencies and nonprofits, will continue to operate as a stand-alone entity, retaining its current corporate name. Company founder, Wilson will remain as its chief executive officer. Alorica is a national and international player in the customer care services industry, and like Ryla, is MBE (minority business enterprise)-certified. The company has 7,500 employees in 16 locations, 14

housed nationally, and experienced fiveyear revenue growth of 356 percent. Ryla currently employs more than 3,500 agents, with 600 in Saraland. “The Ryla investment supports the Alorica strategic goals through growth and expanded geographic presence. The partnership will enhance our client portfolio and amplify our reach for new business opportunities,” said Andy Lee, Alorica chairman/chief executive officer. “The transaction represents the strength of two certified MBE organizations aligning to form an affiliation focused on delivering premier services to our valued customers.” “By combining the strengths of our companies, we will be better able to serve our customers as a total solutions provider, thus helping them improve the profitability of their businesses and overall competitiveness,” added Wilson.
ETC Luck Continues for the USS Alabama
Bill Tunnell, executive director of USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park (second from left) is pictured on the ship’s main deck with SSAB’s Brian Tomlinson, Terry Russo and Jan Keyser. SSAB Americas recently donated 78 tons of steel to help restore the battleship.
During World War II, she was called the “Lucky A” because she lost no American lives due to enemy fire. Recently, thanks to an SSAB Americas donation, the USS Alabama battleship had another run of good fortune – the 78 tons of steel needed to restore her to fighting form. What does 78 tons of steel look like? Just take a look at the top seven decks of the battleship, according to Bill Tunnell, executive director of USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park. Built in the 1940s, the battleship restoration and repair plans include her main deck, superstructure and cannons; and will require preparation, replacement and coating of approximately
160,000 square feet. The estimated cost of the project is $1.3 million. “With the support of SSAB Americas, the USS Alabama Battleship Commission will be able to continue their mission of memorializing veterans while preserving history for future generations,” said Tunnell. A National Historic Landmark, the vessel will celebrate the 68th anniversary of her 1942 commissioning this year. Battleship Memorial Park has welcomed more than 13 million visitors from all 50 states and virtually every nation in the world. Last year alone, 332,122 visitors toured the park with 80 percent of the visitors traveling from outside the state.
Spring Hill College Expands to Europe Beginning January 2011, a few Spring Hill College students will be saying “arrivederci” to Mobile to study at the college’s new academic center in Bologna, Italy, regarded as “the European capital of culture.” Students who study at the center will have a unique opportunity to live and study abroad, The plaza in Bologna, Italy, pictured above, is where some according to Todd Springhill College students will study in 2011. Where the Money Goes – Alabama Ranked High on Spending Transparency Only seven states scored higher than Alabama in providing online access to government spending, according to a report evaluating states’ efforts at government transparency. “Following the Money: How the 50 States Rate in Providing Online Access to Government Spending Data,” was produced by the California Public Interest Research Group. The report stated, “In the private sector, Internet search technology has revolutionized the accessibility and transparency of information. We take for granted the ability to track deliveries online, to check cell phone minutes and compare real estate on the Web and even to summon – at the click of a mouse – satellite and street-level views of
any address. But until recently when it came to tracking government expenditures online, we were left in the dark” Early last year, Alabama created a www.open.alabama.gov, a searchable site detailing state government spending, including the state’s checkbook, monthly financial reports and the comprehensive annual financial report of state government. The report says Alabama lost points because the web site does not include local governments spending information and its information about active contracts is in PDF form only. Kentucky topped the list in spending transparency, followed by Ohio, Illinois, Minnesota, Texas, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Hawaii and Nevada. Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce

Capacity Assessment Reveals Community Priorities Out of the toughest times, comes the greatest need as it relates to health and human services. Clients increase, waiting lists grow, and often contributions and funds decline when they are needed most. In an effort to direct dollars where demand is greatest, four local organizations spearheaded a community needs assessment to ensure local agencies are providing the services needed here in Mobile. The Mobile County Commission, Mobile Area Education Foundation, The Junior League of Mobile (JLM) and United Way of Southwest Alabama sought to identify where Mobile needs to strengthen its health and human services and which portion of the population requires the most help. The Community Capacity Inventory documents the committee’s findings. It was compiled by the Center for Healthy Communities Research Office of the University of South Alabama in December 2009. Ninety organizations were invited to

are gaps, this study was to help us identify those areas.” The results of the inventory painted a picture of where Mobile’s services excel and where they fall short. Miller pointed out the findings show Mobile is matching national trends where education typically leads. “Many of the challenges we face do occur
in other communities. Our goal is to create lasting, positive change in this community,” Miller said. To that end, the study recognized education, training and marketable skills as building blocks to a better life. According to Sirmon, stakeholders in the study are sifting through the information to better their own organizations and make a positive impact on the community. She said JLM is in the process of identifying ways to use study results internally, assisting the community and the 16 nonprofit agencies JLM supports. And while individual agencies are doing their part to utilize study results, Miller and Sirmon agreed Mobile’s business community plays a vital role in encouraging change. “Get involved in your community by volunteering and financially supporting our area’s nonprofit organizations,” said Sirmon. “This will ensure that we can continue, or in some areas begin addressing needs in our community, to make a positive impact.”
Community Capacity Study Results – The Good and The Bad The recently released Community Capacity Inventory provided information on what it found as assets and areas of need in the community, specifically as it relates to healthcare delivery and human care delivery for children and youth. The inventory’s objectives were to: identify the community’s assets and define their capacity; and identify current gaps in services needed. Results from this study will be used as a benchmark for health and human services as community organizations move forward to address the greatest needs in the Mobile area directed at serving the thousands of children. Survey participants first ranked broad service areas including health, housing, education, safety, transportation and
human services. Then gave priority attention to preschoolers, followed by middle, high and elementary school children. The next phase of the study identified health and human service needs affecting a child’s ability to learn, the agencies and organizations addressing them, and sought service figures. The information below was taken from the executive summary of the Community Capacity Inventory, presented by the Center for Healthy Communities Research Office at the University of South Alabama.
• The Women, Infant & Children (WIC) program of the Mobile County Health Department to provide food and nutritional resources is an asset, but not enough people are aware of these services, or “may be ashamed of applying for assistance.”
Summary of Findings: Assets in Healthcare Delivery for Children and Youth • According to the study, Mobile County’s 41 organizations providing healthcare services supply the appropriate infrastructure to deliver health services and mental health services for its young residents. The greatest obstacles in reaching more patients are residents’ lack of awareness of the services available and areas where the need outweighs the resources. • The Bay Area Food Bank is seen as a valuable asset, serving 300,000 meals a year, with adequate physical facilities to double its service capacity, however it required additional monetary resources to fulfill its potential.

The Greatest Need • The study states, “The services with the greatest need for additional capacity are mental health services and services for children and youth with disabilities.” It goes on to say, “…the number needing mental health services indicate a large gap in the provision of services for general mental health and specific mental health needs such as ADD/ADHD (behavioral problems) and drug and alcohol dependencies.” Continued on page 8

Community Capacity Study Results – The Good and The Bad Continued from page 7 • The number of children and youth in Mobile County with disabilities ranges from thousands to 40,000, but study participants reported fewer than 4,000 received health services for their disabilities within the 12-month period during 2008-2009 when the study took place. • Additional resources are needed to adequately serve children and youth with specific health conditions such as autism, epilepsy, sickle cell, vision and hearing problems, and speech impediments.
• An estimated number of children with autism requiring specific health services ranges from 700 to 4,000 and there is a significant gap in meeting the needs of children with autism.

• There are strong programs currently in existence that help parents do a better job raising their children, assisting with basic needs and offering referral services to develop future leaders.
• The rising incidence of childhood obesity suggests additional resources are needed in times of high employment, to help ensure children consume vegetables, fruits and whole grain foods. Estimates far exceed the number served. • Only one organization in Mobile county addresses sleep habits and sleep deprivation in children and youth, and there is a waiting list for these services.
The Greatest Need • Based on an analysis of “the number of children and youth needing specific human services, the researchers believe the greatest gap is in mental health support.” It is estimated as many as 112,000 children and youth in the area need counseling or mental health services. • Greatest needs in mental health services include developing appropriate social skills, becoming well adjusted, which
Assets in Delivery of Human Services for Children and Youth • According to the study, Mobile has a strong network of organizations dedicated to improving the quality of life. It was specific to mention nine local programs, and a 10th one working to prepare adjudicated young people to lead responsible and productive lives. Yet despite the best efforts of all these organizations, responses indicate the need for services exceeds the capacity of responding organizations.

includes behavioral and discipline problems, and anti-social services such as bullying and gang activity. • There is an immediate need for increased capacity of temporary shelters for the homeless. • The study states there is a shortage of capacity for summer enrichment programs for children and youth. It’s estimated summer programs currently serve 8,700 children, but as many as 16,000 would benefit. • There is a significant gap in vocational training and employment, with a reported low capacity for providing vocational training for local area youth.

Southeast Writing Co. LLC
Southeast Writing Co. LLC employees (from left to right) Tameka Logan, Alexandria West and Lindsey Dixon.
The world is filled with writer “wannabes,” individuals who say they want to write but never quite do. That’s not the case for Tameka Logan, who turned her love for writing into a successful career. Logan’s company, Southeast Writing Co. LLC is the Mobile Area Chamber’s Small Business of the Month. A Gulf Coast native, Logan joined the U.S. Army and lived in Texas for several years but came home to Mobile when her military service ended and college education was complete. “I joined the Army since I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to do with myself,” said Logan. Initially thinking she would do clerical work in the Army, Logan instead found herself learning the art of technical writing. She worked on many projects including battle plans for U.S. Army intelligence, and writing personnel and procedure manuals for her unit. “I was so young at the time but it was incredible and really interesting work. It was all related to planning and finding the likely and least likely scenarios of any situation.” Upon returning home, Logan found a few options for her talents including working for a government contractor on federal and coastal projects. “I was in classes with representatives from big, global companies learning the same systems to write about for my clients,” explained Logan. Tired of work-related travel and wanting to spend more time with her
growing family, Logan started Southeast Writing in 2007, putting herself where she wanted to be – in front of the computer. “As a business owner, I do have to get out and network but I am happiest working for others.” Southeast Writing Co.’s writing and communications services include business writing, grant writing, business plans and proposals, technical writing, interactive and 3D presentations, web site maintenance, and marketing collateral pieces such as brochures and flyers. The company’s business support includes research, data entry, social network management and general correspondence. Resumé services include resumé and cover letter writing, career packages – cover, thank you and follow-up letters for a single price, career workshops and referrals. “We are where a small business can go for resources and business support services,” explained Logan. With four employees, the company acts as an outsourced communications department for small businesses. “We can do anything a business needs as far as communications and writing,” said Logan. “You have to communicate with people where they are and we understand not all businesses are in the same place and have different needs at different times.”

Business today is getting tough. Maybe it’s time to bring in some heavy hitters.
With over 75 lawyers, we are one of the largest law firms in the state of Alabama. We offer our clients decades of experience and the necessary resources to handle the myriad of complex corporate, financial, business and regulatory matters that they encounter. Business gets more competitive, complicated and litigious every day; perhaps choosing a heavier hitter can save you time, money and maybe your livelihood.

Brief description of business: Delta Commercial Cleaning provides commercial cleaning and janitorial services to offices, model homes, rental homes and apartments, postconstruction homes and offices, churches, educational housings and dorms. What is unique or innovative about your business? Delta Commercial Cleaning is owner-operated. “We perform the work ourselves so we know that the quality of service is consistent and at the highest possible level,” said Moses. “We do not send unsupervised personnel to provide services on behalf of the company.” Moses said the company is also available for clients’ immediate requests and offers short-term contracts. Most significant challenge: As new business owners, Moses and Buzbee said their biggest hurdle is persuading potential clients to allow the company to showcase its work and get clients to understand the benefits of an owner-operated business.
