Sweet Home Alabama, currently airing on CMT, was filmed in Point Clear. Producers of the eight-episode series benefitted from an amendment passed through the legislature that combines television episodes filmed within a 12-month period into one project. The move helps level the playing field for Alabama’s recruiting effort.

James K. Lyons, director and chief executive officer of the Alabama State Port Authority (ASPA), recently was appointed to the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta’s Birmingham branch board of directors. Lyons is one of seven new members appointed by the Federal Reserve board of governors. “I am honored to be appointed to this board,” said Lyons, “and I know this will be a great learning experience for me.” Directors provide economic information from the branch territory to the district bank’s president and head office directors, who use the information to formulate monetary policy and make discount rate recommendations. Lyons will attend 10 meetings in Birmingham and one meeting in Atlanta during his term. Before joining ASPA, Lyons was owner of Trinity Marine and Transportation Consulting. He graduated from The University of Alabama and currently serves on the board of trustees of GulfQuest, the board of directors of the National Waterways Council and the Mobile Area Chamber’s board of advisors, and he is a member of Manufacture Alabama. Earlier this year, Lee Robinson, president of OHC, was appointed to the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta’s New Orleans branch.

The $4 million project at Little Bay in the Mississippi Sound also received the Grand Award for Engineering Excellence from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Alabama. Locally, it was recognized as the 2011 Project of the Year by the Mobile Area Council of Engineers. Volkert also won a Gulf Guardian Award for 2011 in the business category for the project. Hurricane Katrina eroded and breached a small peninsula south of Little Bay that protected sea grasses, oyster reefs and extensive salt marsh haibitat to the north. Volkert’s work included planning, design, permitting, bidding and construction management, and the work was coastal Alabama’s largest restoration project. Remembers Dear Friend
Robert Guthans, co-founder of Midstream Fuel, was a longtime Chamber supporter
Recent harbor and terminal investments are making way for larger shipments at the Port of Mobile. The Alabama State Port Authority continues to upgrade facilities to service Post-Panamax vessels, ships that will be able to travel through the Panama Canal once the expansion is complete in 2014.
The Mobile Area Chamber mourns the loss of Robert A. Guthans, a respected and beloved businessman, community leader and longtime Chamber supporter who died June 5. Guthans retired as president of Midstream Fuel, Petroleum Energy Products and Tenn-Tom Towing Co. He co-founded Midstream Fuel in 1974. Guthans served as chairman of the Chamber’s board of directors in 1985, and served on the Chamber foundation’s board of directors from 1987-89, and from 1998 until the time of his death. He headed the foundation’s board from 2001 until 2009, when he was named chairman emeritus. Guthans was the first recipient of the Chamber’s Alfred F. Delchamps Award, established in 1990 to honor individuals who carry on the vision and principles of another former board chairman, Alfred F. Delchamps Jr., who was a moving force for progress in the community and the Chamber. “Mr. Guthans was a gentleman of the first order,” said Win Hallett, Mobile Area Chamber president. “His quiet, thoughtful and well-principled leadership is the foundation on which many of our region’s current successes were built. He deserves our heartfelt gratitude for his decades of service to the Chamber, the business community and all of Mobile.” Earlier this year, the Chamber honored Guthans by naming a conference room for him. The Guthans Maritime Conference Room is on the Chamber’s first floor.
Post-Panamax Service Increasing
at the Port of Mobile The largest steel shipment to date at the Port of Mobile was offloaded through the Pinto Steel Terminal in June, and Alabama State Port Authority’s (ASPA) officials are crediting harbor and terminal investments for creating new vessel opportunities for port users. A total of 98,694 short tons, or 4,243 individual carbon steel slabs, were offloaded from the M/V BRITANNIA G, representing the first Post-Panamax vessel (ships that will be able to travel through the Panama Canal once the expansion is complete in 2012) handled at the Pinto Steel Terminal. The ship then shifted to McDuffie Terminal to load one of the largest export coal shipments to date. The Port of Mobile’s 45-foot channel and new turning basin, along with ASPA’s new terminal infrastructure, PostPanamax cranes and inland transportation connections, easily handle increased cargo volumes to fill this larger class of ships.
James K. Lyons, ASPA’s director and chief executive officer, noted the significance of the first Post-Panamax shipment of Brazilian-produced product. “Our infrastructure investments at the Port of Mobile to handle larger vessels are beginning to pay off for our shippers,” he said. “Several steel and coal customers were able to take advantage of economies of scale and the port’s harbor conditions available to this ship call.” ASPA owns and operates both Pinto Steel Terminal and McDuffie Coal Terminal. Recently the organization and its customers invested more than $600 million in general cargo, bulk and containerized freight terminals located on the lower harbor. Both terminals, along with the new container terminal, utilize new Post-Panamax gantry cranes, new optic and computer technology, a new lower harbor turning basin, and a year-round 45-foot draft channel.

Driving west on I-10, one can’t help noticing TriNova’s new building – and that’s intentional, said Robbie Watson, the company’s president and chief executive officer. Now open for a year off Halls Mill Road near the Tillman’s Corner exit, the high-visibility spot is perfect for the company’s marketability and proximity to clientele. TriNova is the Mobile Area Chamber’s Small Business of the Month. TriNova serves nearly every manufacturing company in the area, providing repair, installation and maintenance of process controls around the clock. Clients include manufacturers who produce everything from agricultural products to detergent additives. “It’s not an 8-to-5 job,” said Watson. “We have to go where and when the customer needs us.” As manufacturers reconfigure staff and outsource work, this process solutions and equipment provider is seeing a demand for its services and has added six new employees since relocating from downtown Mobile.
TriNova’s move serves another purpose, making room for its state-of-the-art training facility. The $4 million capital investment allows 20 to 65 industry participants to take part in a week-long training session. The high-tech training area, a web of pipes and meters, gives students hands-on experience in service and an understanding of how TriNova-sold products work. Leaders of the company hope to expand the program to meet the needs of students pursuing education and job placement in the industry. But there’s more to the business than just training. TriNova recently won Endress +Hauser’s 2010 Award of Excellence for outperforming all other authorized distributors of measurement instruments and calibration monitoring equipment. Watson, who has an engineering background, took over the business, then known as the Frank A. Thomas Co., 11 years ago. In an effort to give the group a fresh start, employees participated in a contest to find a new name.
As founder, Robbie Watson chose the name “TriNova” because it symbolized the three facets of the company: sales, service and engineering. The 50-year-old company now employs more than 45 people locally and has other locations in Alabama, as well as Tennessee and Louisiana. “We’re kind of retro,” said General Manager Tom Fox of the company’s appeal. “It’s what sets us apart. We’re all about the face-to-face personal contact and the small business approach. We’re getting away from the guy who takes calls from his house. We have a home base here in this facility.” According to Watson, that retro approach is propelling TriNova into the future and across the country. “Every time we’ve expanded, companies have sought us out. They want us to move in with our philosophy.” No matter where they expand, TriNova’s leaders plan to stay close to their roots at home. “We’ve invested heavily here and this is where we want to keep it,” said Watson.

Win Thurber (left side of ship wheel) is an icon in Mobile’s shipping industry, starting and expanding several companies over the last three decades. With his partner Schley Rutherford (right side of ship wheel), the partners bought the international shipping agency Norton Lilly and moved its headquarters to Mobile. Pictured with Thurber and Rutherford from left to right are: John Wade Thurber, Winchester Thurber, Schley Rutherford Jr. and Sumner Adams.
Steady at the Wheel Mobile-based Norton Lilly is an international shipping agency managing business for vessel owners all over the world When Win Thurber and his partner, Schley (Sly) Rutherford, bought Norton Lilly in 2002, it had 3,000 ship calls. Since then calls have increased to more than 23,000. “We just needed a foundation to grow, and that’s what we did,” said Thurber. The international shipping agency with approximately 600 employees worldwide has been headquartered in downtown Mobile since Strachan Shipping purchased Norton Lilly in 2002. Thurber, president and chief executive officer, said the company could be based anywhere in the world. “But I live here. Sly lives here. And it’s more than that. We have a good quality of life, a good, loyal workforce, low turnover, and it’s cost effective.” The family-owned company, with two generations of both the Thurber and Rutherford families working there, has 100 8
employees in Mobile, including all the executive positions, with another 500 in 35 major ports throughout the continental U.S., Hawaii, Canada and the Panama Canal. According to Thurber, Norton Lilly is North America’s largest independent shipping agent. Norton Lilly represents vessel owners, offering a menu of services from total representation to any particular facet. “We are them. We run their business here in North America,” said Thurber of his overseas customers who own ships or cargo or both. Norton Lilly solicits cargo, handles accounts payable and account receivables, coordinates delivery, and arranges pilots, tugs and customs clearance, among the logistics and management services offered. Internationally, Norton Lilly’s top shipments are grain, oil, coal, auto carriers

and containers that hold everything from cotton to tobacco to tennis shoes, Thurber said. In the past two decades, Thurber has seen his industry competition all but disappear. “There were 18 general agents 20 years ago – today there are two in the U.S.” At the start of his career, Thurber worked in Philadelphia for Malcom McLean, credited with inventing and patenting the first shipping container in the 1950s. McLean bought Pan-American Steamship Co., a subsidiary of Mobile’s Waterman Steamship Co., and changed the name to Sealand. Thurber lived in a number of cities, including The Hague, Netherlands. And when Seatrain, the company he was working for in 1980, went bankrupt, his wife talked him into moving back to Mobile instead of going to New York where
he felt he’d have the best chance of finding a job. Mobile, he insists, is where he really wanted to be. He started the Thurber Agency, continuing his career in the industry he knew best. Over the years, he’s become an expert at merging and acquiring companies. Thurber became Southern Steamship and then sold this venture in 1992 to Inchcape Shipping, also headquartered in Mobile. Thurber remained as president for several years. By 1999, he was hungry to start a new endeavor. He and Rutherford bought Strachan Shipping Agency, a company with a history dating back to 1886. Just a few years later, the company acquired Norton Lilly, the most recognizable name in the U.S., said Thurber. At 71, Thurber says he’s not ready to retire. He “gets a kick out of this business.”

Why are you located in Mobile?
“Mobile, more specifically north Mobile, is home,” said West. “I have deep roots here socially, spiritually and professionally, and I know the area, its people and the advantages this area offers. It has been extremely fulfilling for me to be able to contribute to the growth and strength of our local economy. In addition, Mobile’s ‘heart of the Gulf Coast’ setting has provided excellent opportunities for growth and diversification for the company.” Why do you support the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce’s Partners for Growth initiative?
“The Chamber provides an excellent channel for communicating and promoting the vast and diverse resources the area offers for prospective business investors,” said West. “As such, the
company’s perspective is that a strong Chamber ensures an enhanced future business environment. The company has realized substantive benefit from past Chamber successes and has a vested interest in the Chamber’s continued success.” What do you see as Mobile’s greatest potential? “Mobile’s
extraordinary resources should dictate her ascendency to a principal leader for attracting major industry and becoming a financial services center,” said West. “These resources comprise the main arteries for interstate commerce, aggressive and competent business leadership, and an educated and well-trained labor pool with a rich work ethic and strong moral fiber.” Length of Chamber Membership: Since 1996
Chamber@work New Book Records History A collector’s book chronicling the Mobile Area Chamber’s history is in production. It will be given as a gift to attendees at Opportunity 175, the Chamber’s annual meeting, on Jan. 26, 2012. Two Chamber member companies are collaborating on the book: Gwin’s Commercial Printing is printing it, and Tom Mason Communications is designing it. The book will include rarely seen historical photographs and an abbreviated written history of the Chamber and its impact on Mobile’s economy since 1836. The Chamber is selling a limited number of ads to offset the cost of this book. To learn more, contact Rene Eiland at reiland@mobilechamber.com or call 510-4175. Armed Forces Day a Success The annual Armed Forces Day luncheon was held on May 24 at its new venue, the USA Mitchell Center, with more than 200 people in attendance. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers district commander Col. Steven J. Roemhildt PE was the keynote speaker. Service members were recognized for outstanding community service and performance in uniform. New Format for Getting Items in the Weekly E-mail The Chamber’s weekly e-newsletter, The Business View Weekly, has a new policy and online link for news and events. Now, members wanting to publicize events must complete a form at www.mobilechamber. com/newsevents.asp. Also, there’s a new inbox for news releases, news@mobile chamber.com. With this new process, the Chamber and The Business View Weekly will be able to better serve its members. State Economic Development Allies Study the Mobile Bay Region The Chamber’s Economic Development department partnered with the Mobile Airport Authority, Alabama State Port Authority, and Baldwin County Economic Development Alliance to host 13 state allies for a familiarization tour of the region in April. Representatives from Alabama Development Office, Alabama Department of Revenue, Alabama Power, PowerSouth, Norfolk Southern and CSX participated in the event that included tours of the Port of Alabama, Brookley Aeroplex, Mobile Regional Airport and several industrial sites in Mobile and Baldwin counties.

7 Habits
of Highly Horrible Networkers Networking is a term that didn’t exist (academically) until almost 40 years ago. Now it’s a word uttered in and around the business world every day, yet it’s unclear to most how it actually works. Still, networking is a fundamental tool to the success of any business. By definition, the term networking is the development and maintenance of mutually valuable relationships. It’s not schmoozing; it’s not just handing out business cards, selling, marketing or small talk. Those activities are part of networking, but unfortunately, many people’s misunderstanding of the term causes them to network ineffectively. The following are “The 7 Habits of Highly Horrible Networkers™,” and they can stand in the way of developing mutually valuable relationships. So next time you attend your association meeting or the Chamber’s Business Expo on Aug. 25, keep these ideas in mind so you can offer the most value to your fellow networkers.
Habit #1: Attitude.
Much like the development of any skill, networking begins with attitude. Unfortunately, Highly Horrible Networkers have the wrong attitude. If you’ve ever attended a networking function before, perhaps you’ve encountered business people who act in the following ways: • The hard sell. They believe networking is about one thing and one thing only: selling products and services to everyone in the room. • Business only. They’re not there to make friends. They’re not there to have fun. And they’re certainly not interested in developing mutually valuable relationships. • It’s all about me. They don’t take the time to help and share with others, but rather focus on their own needs. In other words, they can’t spell “N-E-T-W-O-R-K-I-N-G” without “I.” Attitude is fundamental to effective networking. In fact, it’s the most important habit to understand.
Habit #2 Dig your
well WHEN you’re thirsty.
One of my favorite networking books is called Dig Your Well Before You’re Thirsty by Harvey McKay. It’s probably the most well-known text on this subject. The key to McKay’s work is making friends, establishing contacts and developing relationships – before you need them. Get what you want
by helping others get what they want first. Enter the Highly Horrible Networkers, who only network because: a) They need new customers. b) They have a new product or service to sell. c) Their boss forced them to do so. As you already learned, networking is the development and maintenance of mutually valuable relationships – over time. If you try to dig your well when you’re thirsty, you may never find a drink.
Habit #3: Dealin’ the deck. Habit #3 is a dangerous
I have nothing against AOL, Hotmail or Yahoo. But if possible, always send and receive e-mails using the address of your organization’s website, such as scott@ hellomynameisscott.com. If you must use free servers, choose a simple username that doesn’t question your professionalism: for instance, jackgateman@yahoo.com.
Habit #5: Sit with the wrong company.
I’ll never forget my first chamber meeting. One afternoon I sat down with six other local business people for our monthly
one, and it happens all the time. Have you ever seen people distribute 173 of their business cards during the first five minutes of the event? They move as quickly as possible from one person to the next. They don’t make eye contact; they don’t ask to exchange cards – they just deal them out. “Here’s my card, call me if you need a designer! See ya later.” “But… I… never even got your name!” you muse. This is guaranteed to make people feel puny and insignificant. Notice these Highly Horrible Networkers don’t spend time actually meeting and establishing rapport with new people; they concentrate on giving out as many cards as possible. It’s quantity Scott Ginsberg is a professional speaker, “the over quality, right? world’s foremost field expert on nametags” and Wrong. the author of HELLO my name is Scott. For Dealin’ the deck is one booking or more information, contact Front of the most common Porch Productions at (314) 878-5419 or e-mail networking pet peeves. him at scott@hellomynameisscott.com.
Habit #4:
Unprofessional information. It’s remarkable how
often some business cards will contain unprofessional information. Have you ever received someone’s card with one of those ambiguous, offensive and questionable e-mail addresses with AOL, Hotmail or Yahoo? Not only are those e-mail servers frustrating and ineffective for business communication, but just imagine how it looks when someone has to send business e-mails to: • HotLips98@aol.com • KaylasMommyRules@yahoo.com • Isellcars2U@hotmail.com.
networking lunch. Naturally, the first thing I did was look at everyone’s nametags, not only to learn their names but to examine the effectiveness of their nametag’s design and placement. But these were the nametags I saw: ADM Financial, ADM Financial, ADM Financial, ADM Financial, ADM Financial, ADM Financial, Scott. (Company name changed to protect the victims.) Highly Horrible networkers not only attend meetings with their friends and/or coworkers, but they talk and sit with them the entire time! These are people with whom they’ve worked five days a week, eight hours a day for the past three years!
This is not a good technique to maximize your company’s visibility. This habit creates an elitist, unfriendly attitude. And think how uncomfortable this makes the one or two people sitting at the table who don’t work for that company. It’s unfair to them because they’re unable to meet a diverse group of people with whom to develop mutually valuable relationships. Remember: If you’re sitting with your company, you’re sitting with the wrong company.
Habit #6: Small talk is for suckers.
Highly Horrible Networkers forget about the small talk. It’s a waste of their time. They don’t ask or answer about “new and exciting things happening at work” or “how Thanksgiving was,” they simply jump right into (what they believe to be) the most important part of the discussion: selling 17 of their products before the salad arrives. Has this ever happened to you? For example, has someone ever introduced themselves, breezed right through the conversation and flat-out asked you for a referral? Refer you? I don’t even know you! Reciprocating self-disclosure is the most effective way to build rapport and ultimately develop trust. The people you want to do business with are those with whom you have built that rapport and trust. So small talk is not for suckers. Debra Fine, author of The Fine Art of Small Talk, put it best when she said: “Small talk is the biggest talk we do.”
Habit #7:
Limitations. Finally, Highly
Horrible Networkers believe there is only one specific time and place for networking. It’s called “A Room with A Sign Posted Outside That Says So.” In other words, they only network when someone forces them to. They don’t believe networking opportunities in places like elevators, buses, supermarkets or parks. That’s it? A measly half-hour for networking? Doesn’t give you much time, does it? The truth about networking is that it can happen anytime, anywhere. There is a time and a place for networking – it’s called any time, and any place.
