T

News from the President

he Executive Club of Laredo Celebrates its 4th Anniversary. The Executive Club completed its fourth year of operations this past October. The Club has 450 active members and continues to provide Laredo with a quality business atmosphere as necessary to the success of our community.

T

he Executive Club’s success is dependent on the support of Laredo and the business community. Six organizations conduct their weekly meetings at the Club. Seventeen groups meet monthly on the premises and over 35 other organizations have meetings throughout the year. Organizations that meet at the Club are providing us with a steady stream of business and the Board is appreciative of this endorsement by over 50 of our social, civic, and business organizations.

T

he Club’s 450 members consistently use the club services. Out of town guests are frequent visitors to our Club. In addition, the reciprocal agreement with other clubs give us opportunities to use those clubs in 12 states and 8 key cities in Texas, as well as Guadalajara and Mexico City. As the Club moves to a new level of success, this is a unique opportunity to expand our reach and extend the services of this Club to long-time Laredoans as well as newcomers. The Executive Club is on sound footing. The last fiscal year was a record year. Every month this year has us in black ink.

T o this end, the Club will soon be announcing a membership

drive, which will make this Club accessible to more Laredoans. The Board has undertaken this task in an effort to make this Club more responsive to the needs of our growing community.

P

rofessors, federal employees, teachers, brokers, merchants and retired persons are natural constituencies for this Club.

A

s Laredo grows, so should the amenities available to Laredoans. The Executive Club must be part of this growth and part of the higher expectations we all have for our city.

A

s we build our foundations for the future a business club, a social club, a super club is a necessity. Today, we are proud that the Executive Club of Laredo is doing better than ever. As we expand our horizons we want every Laredoan to have the opportunity to expand with us.

CHARGE Privileges Is it time to change the member Mind-set....? The following is an excerpt from The private Club Advisor, a monthly publication to the Directors, officers, owners and managers of private Clubs. november 1995 issue. Dear Club executive, Too often members do not view club credit obligations with the same sense of commitment and timeliness that they view monthly charges on credit cards. members consider charging a benefit of belonging to the club, one of the privileges they “buy” with their dues. While this view is justifiable to a point, it can lead to delayed payments by members and subsequent cash-flow problems for the club. if delinquent accounts are a problem, it might be time to set members straight on the duties and the CoST of having charge privileges at the club. in a way, a club is like a major retailer that provides a

private-label charges card neiman marcus, Sears, etc. Unlike a major retailer, the club most likely has extended an unlimited line of credit to its customers (members), and often those customers have a casual attitude about making the payments. The member who puts the club statement at the bottom of the stack of bills, perhaps delaying payment more than 30, or 60 days as a matter of routine, should be reminded that his, or her delinquency is costly to all members. no one explains to the members that being in the billing business costs money. it can be a costly, full-time process for some staff members. Couple that with the continual threat of cash-flow problems, the cost of the club maintaining a line of credit if it has to borrow money to meet payroll and other expenses, and you have a problem that affects eVeryone. it is obvious that a club’s business is tied to its ability to bill the members and the members’ ability to pay, or should we say willingness to pay in most cases.
