Staying Power Improving Student Retention Choosing to stay on in education, is an exciting, but not an easy, option. It takes staying power. Staying Power How we work... Motivational theory often focuses on the impact of perceived “pleasure and pain” on an individual’s willingness to undertake a task. The idea of further education is very appealing to many, with the opportunities and long-term benefits of gaining further qualifications. Pleasure is often associated with the outcome. When the going gets tough, this vision can fade into the background; the focus turns to the process of learning (deadlines, assignments etc)

By supporting students in identifying clear future benefits of commitment to their studies, our approach helps students to ride through (and even embrace) the tougher times. Associating current “pain” with future “pleasure” helps the students to maintain focus on “why” they are doing the work rather than just “what” they are doing. “What’s in it for me” is a very powerful motivator but is often lost in the process.
