Ahead of her appearance, we take a sneak peek at what’s in store as she takes inspiration from s/s 13 trends to predict the essential looks for womenswear, all edited into four key themes.

KEY LOOKS: Elevate a loose silhouette with dramatic costume jewellery/ Wide silk palazzo pants are submerged in watermark prints/ Asymmetrical silk column dresses feature hip detail/ A metallic rope belt threads around the hips for added effect/ Structured shoulder pads project from sleeveless so twill jackets/ Accessories return to the past with chainmail bags.

CREED e Look: designs explore the uncharted territory of the deep sea as shapes take on billowing new forms. We also explore a stripped-back, minimal approach that emulates a mystical undertone as clothes are bathed in moonlight white. Key s/s 13 inspiration: Gabriele Colangelo, Gucci, Sladjana pengic, Costume national, dale Chihuly.

KEY LOOKS: Crochet patterns for an eclectic stance/ Contrast feminine dresses with leather cowboy hats/ Imbue vintage charm with cork platforms and tobacco bags/ Strong 70s silhouettes are highly discernible in two-pieces/ Waistcoats are fitted and cropped, while high-waisted bell bottoms are ultra long / Team the outfit with a canvas backpack and girly open-toe flatforms.

REAL e Look: rummage through the archives of time and bring back 1970s bohemian aesthetics, as easy hippy looks combine with 1970s disco. Key s/s 13 inspiration: free people, Isabel Marant, Céline, Cutler and Gross.

RATIONAL e Look: Geometry and symmetry come out to play to create ergonomic shapes by using pleats and folds. Silhouettes combine the aesthetics of nature and rigorous architectural forms to create optimum proportions. why is your seminar topic relevant to moda visitors?

Seeking specialist help when you know you are struggling is progress in itself. Ultimately any consideration for using a consultant must be what they may bring to the bottom line.

How did you get into retail? I started my career in retail at the age of 18, as a sales executive at harrods. I’ve held a number of roles in various sectors of the industry, from buying to managing capacities, with a number of big players including Aquascutum, dickins & Jones, Simpsons of piccadilly and most notably hoopers, the family owned department store, where I held the position of Md for several years and provided complete strategic direction and vision for the department store’s growth and development.

what do you currently consider to be the biggest challenge for independent retailers? e current recession is affecting all retailers, not just independents, and common issues are putting huge pressure on profitability, such as increasing costs of rent, interest rates, not to mention the challenge of getting footfall through your store rather than online, as well as the effect of out of town retail parks. It’s a different environment now to “the good old days”. historically, independents were in the main family businesses, many of them owning their freeholds. Subsequent generations have not necessarily wanted to go into the family business and few individuals can afford to purchase freeholds nowadays. I do feel our nation of shopkeepers has never had it so tough and I appreciate it’s not easy to keep a sense of optimism. but difficult times also offer opportunities, and it’s time to take the reins and grab them.

How can independents tackle these challenges? retailers should be constantly evaluating their business and looking at any situation, whatever it may be, and discovering ways to diversify and reinvent what they are doing. is may relate to anything affecting them from local parking, changes in product ranges, opening hours to cash flow and supply chains. Take the time to think about your customer and look at scenarios from their eyes. What do they want? What do they need? don’t dwell on what you have always done in the past. If something is not working for you, fix it – change your mindset and the way you operate.

Trading today is tough and independents face a number of challenges, from the difficult economy and the astronomical growth of online to a change in shopping habits. So many household names have ceased trading because they refused to see the writing on the wall, so seeking specialist help when you know you are struggling is progress in itself. ultimately any consideration for using a consultant must be what they may bring to the bottom line. It may be a particular skill, for example buying, hr or visual merchandising, or simply an unbiased, commercial view of your business. e aim of this seminar is to highlight to retailers that investing in a consultant could be a wise move in today’s climate and I will be discussing how best to turn that investment into profit.

what have been the biggest changes in the fashion industry that you have seen in your career? e impact of primark and supermarkets selling clothing has had a significant impact on the fashion industry recently, and smaller businesses are struggling to compete with the buying power of the big stores. e bigger chains and departments can offer lower prices and as a result consumers are getting into the buying habit of shopping around and have a constant expectation of discounts.

what is your main advice for independent fashion businesses operating in the current climate? It may sound obvious but try to look at the business with fresh eyes. We're all guilty of accepting what we see every day. Get involved. Independent retailers are rooted in the communities they operate in and canny businesses should exploit this as it gives them a competitive advantage over the big department stores. Independents need to be involved in as many aspects as possible, from local awards to petitions about parking. e love affair with the british high street does not need to end. retailers need to show consumers what they are missing out on through highlighting the key strengths independents have, such as exceptional customer service. Your loyal customers are great ambassadors and will spread the word far better than advertising, also exclusive and niche product which the big players can struggle to offer their customers. retailers should carefully look at their finances and not commit their total budget to forward-bought product as there are now more opportunities to buy in-season with short-order lines, which may also give a better average margin.

e love affair with the British high street does not need to end. Retailers need to show consumers what they are missing out on through highlighting the key strengths independents have.



• Volumes in women’s lingerie will be stronger than the womenswear market until 2017 as, during a period of limited discretionary spending, underwear is a more necessary purchase.

• Volume growth returned to positive territory in 2012, aer three years of decline, and will continue to gradually recover though we do not expect to see volume growth reach pre-recessionary levels for at least five years.

• given that underwear is a more needs-driven category, retailers have been forced to keep prices down, causing inflation to be far lower than in outerwear where cotton price hikes and supply chain costs have forced retailers to increase retail prices or take a hit on margins.

• more choice at clothing retailers and improved own-label ranges have G encouraged men to trade down from branded and premium underwear, but we expect this trend to reverse gradually as men trade back up as a result of feeling more confident about spending once more.

• specialists will expand into complementary areas such as bridal lingerie, shapewear, swimwear, loungewear, gymwear, maternity wear and health and beauty to widen their customer base and drive add-on purchases.

• Lack of innovation and newness in the category will cause volumes and expenditure growth to be fairly muted over the next five years.

• it will be essential for specialists to differentiate themselves through range, customer service and shopping experience to help justify price points.

  As footwear buyer Jake bland prepares to travel to Moda footwear this season, he’s a step closer to bringing s/s 14 style back to the northern capital of Manchester. Christina Williams caught up with him as he prepared to take the first step of his journey into the new season.

wrong,” says bland. “I am glad we have our online store running alongside our two retail units, although I do still feel strongly that there will always be customers who want to come into a store and physically try shoes on.” With three retail platforms to consider as he looks ahead to his seasonal buying, bland is keen to take advantage of catching up with most of his key industry contacts at this month’s Moda footwear. “We always visit Moda, and we spend three days there seeing as many suppliers as we can,” says bland. “It cuts down on reps visiting us and making journeys out to suppliers’ showrooms. Moda is relatively local to us and it is the best uk footwear show, particularly because of the number of our suppliers that show there.”

is season in particular, bland is looking to build upon the store’s extensive portfolio of footwear labels which includes Art, base london, Converse, vans, Mjus, rocket dog, Superga, T.u.k and Yokono. following a difficult spring this year, which has seen retailers face adverse meteorological conditions on top of a tough economic climate, bland is looking for some metaphorical sunshine aer the rain in s/s 14.

“our core customer has definitely changed over the years from someone who was once seeking very unusual styles to someone who is perhaps more trend-aware and even celebrity led,” says bland. “however, by working on the shop floor, I feel that we are well-placed to adapt our buying to the evolving needs of our customers.”

“I do feel that next summer can only improve on the disaster of s/s 13,” he says. “e only thing we have to remember as we are doing our buying is that we are in the north of england, and our summers do have a tendency to be cold and wet. It doesn’t help that by the time it gets warmer, the multiples are in sale, which doesn’t help us independents. bring back the good old days when fashion seasons were in line with the weather seasons.”

his time next year, consumers will be looking to Jake Shoes for inspiration. With two bricks-andmortar stores and an online showcase transcending the men’s, women’s and children’s sectors, filling the shelf space of the business is no easy feat. but, for company director Jake bland, it’s an ongoing quest to bring the best of the season back to Manchester’s retail scene.

It’s a traditional approach of one-on-one customer service that is complemented by Jake Shoes’ online operation, a division of the business that was introduced, despite bland’s reservations, to diversify the retailer’s consumer demographic from regional to national. Almost a decade on, bland admits having a foot in both camps has been fitting for his footwear business in more ways than a jovial pun. “Ten years ago, I would never have thought that so many people would buy shoes online, but I have been proved

Climate control may be something that suppliers have little power over but, like many independents, bland is seeking enhanced customer service from the brands’ perspective, in order that he and his team can deliver the enhanced service of an independent back on the shop floor. “e decline of the shops that surround our Stockport store does worry me,” says bland, who has a store in central Manchester’s Arndale Centre as well as Stockport’s princes Street. “We are the only fashion independent on our side of the

town, which is even more incentive for us to offer great customer service and make the shopping trip for each and every consumer a good experience. “Suppliers could help, though, perhaps with better margins for some brands and swapping non-selling lines for better-selling stock throughout the season,” he adds. fine-tuning the store’s long-standing relationships with key labels is an integral part of bland’s business, and it’s a skill learnt from Carol bland, his mother and founder of his eponymous business. A former hairdresser, Carol frequently travelled to london to buy her shoes and, following constant queries about her footwear, the would-be business woman enquired about wholesaling the label. Several hours later, six pairs of her favourite shoes were showcased in the salon window; six sales later, the salon was on the market in favour of an independent footwear store named aer her then baby son, Jake. Almost four decades on, the store’s humble beginnings and the strong ethos of the family heritage are even more reason for present-day director bland to continue to make a success of the business. from a free measuring service for children’s footwear to same-day dispatch via the retailer’s website, every aspect of service is designed to enhance customer experience whether in-store or online, and it’s an

approach that has attracted a somewhat diverse demographic. “I can’t deny that serving david beckham in one of our stores was a personal highlight for me,” says bland. “he came in to buy a pair of kickers for his son, brooklyn, several years back.” primarily, however, aside from celebrity clientele and outstanding service, it is the label’s diverse brand portfolio that is at the heart of its ongoing success. “If there is a brand out there that is fashionable, you should find it at Jake Shoes,” says bland, simply summing up the ethos that has stood his business in such good stead for over 38 years. And in the knowledge that successful retailing is only ever as strong as the trade buying that precedes it, fashionable brands are the order of the season as Moda footwear gets under way.

We always visit Moda, and we spend three days there seeing as many suppliers as we can. It cuts down on reps visiting us and making journeys out to suppliers’ showrooms.

drawing its main inspiration from the Amalfi coast, this season’s range, which comprises jackets, trousers and shirts, places emphasis on lightness, crisp silhouettes and traditional sartorial detail. e season’s colour palette includes a mix of marine blue, midnight blue, lemon yellow, vintage pink, lilac, heather, burnt orange and grey.

is summer’s lifestyle labels have a relaxed, laid-back vibe. pastel colours are prominent, with green, pink and blue key for this season.

MEYER-HOSEN FLORENTINO e s/s 14 florentino collection sees a mixture of materials and textures in both its formal and casual lines. Classic jackets are renewed with contrast knitted details, while suits made with wool and mohair are mixed with fresher and more comfortable fabrics, such as linen and cotton. e more casual line comprises light and refined blazers, in cotton and linen, in classic tones such as navy blue, brown and beige.

Meyer-hosen presents three categories this season, Comfort, Modern and premium, with certain styles in heavier fabrics. Meanwhile, silhouettes remain slim for the new season in both its denim and chino options.

BRÜHL e new collection from Brühl sees its classic line updated with new fits and additional details such as contrasting stitching and wash-out effects. As well as traditional colours, the spring/summer range is also updated in a variety of summery shades including green, yellow, red and blue.
