This trend is defined by minimalist, relaxed silhouettes including cool tunic dresses or classic shift styles, which are perfect for hot summers in the city or a stroll at the beach. Materials are focused on light fibres such as linens, thin cottons and silks. The looks are complemented by muted colours such as beiges, greys and stone, while prints also remain low-key with tonal graphics or discreet animal prints.

The buyer’s view TOP INDIE RETAILERS SHARE THEIR S/S 19 BUYING AGENDAS FOR MODA. Whether it’s about discovering new names or topping up on bestsellers, we get the lowdown from key buyers on what will be defining their seasonal buying and budgets, and why a trip to Moda is a must.

Pamela Shiffer, owner, Pamela Shiffer, London “I’m always in search of new and inspiring brands to add to our mix, and this time I will be looking at footwear, accessories and in-season buys, however I’m open minded and have nothing specific on my agenda. I’ll be looking for fun boho holiday styles as this areas has been a growing market for us, and I’m also looking for known traditional eveningwear. Moda is fast becoming a vital addition to my show calendar because it gives a good variety in areas I feel are difficult to buy at other shows. I’ll therefore be attending for two days. My budget will remain the same unless either established collections are no longer suitable for us or I discover new collections that are a good fit for our customers, in which case I will increase my budget.” Donald Begg, director, Begg Shoes, Inverness “We will once again be at Moda for the best part of two days. Moda is convenient to get a lot of appointments done in a short space of time and it’s always nice to catch-up with everyone in the shoe trade and to compare notes. Our budget this season will likely increase, however, we’re conservative in the way we buy and aren’t going to expect to have as good a summer as we have had this year! There aren’t any specific groups where we feel we need drastic changes to the range. With the summer we’ve just had sandals have been flying out the doors for us, though trends haven’t been clear in terms of demand other than the fact metallics have been more popular than in the past. Neutral colours seem to be key as peoples’ pockets are increasingly squeezed and they need a hybrid style and colour that can be used with several outfits, so this is mainly what we will be looking for at the show.”

David Seed, owner, Hellewells, Preston “We regularly come to Moda to top up on key labels, as well as to catch up with everyone in the industry and network. We always come with an open mind to see whether any new collections might catch our eye, so I’m hoping I will discover the odd new label to introduce to our store.” Val Howell, footwear buyer, Harveys of Halifax, Halifax “Moda is a very important show for us and I will spend a full three days there. We usually see a lot of our regular brands at the show, but I’m also keen to discover new labels and add some fresh names to our offer. I haven’t got specific trends or styles in mind, though I do tend to do my research and look at the wider global trends in preparation to be able to react accordingly.”

Moda is a very important show for me and once again I will be attending for two full days as I plan to do at least 35 per cent of the season’s buying there

This season we’re mainly on the lookout for British labels, and I will be heading to Moda Gent to hopefully find some gems Melanie Brocklehurst, buyer, Brocklehursts, Bakewell “This season we’re mainly on the lookout for British labels, and I will be heading to Moda Gent to hopefully find some gems. As independents we need to offer our customers something new and exciting every season, so we’re always open to discovering new labels and always carry some budget for that purpose. We’ll also be looking for classic country styles with a modern twist, as this constitutes a large chunk of our offer.”

23

Martha Fraser, owner, Martha V, Newmarket “Moda is a very important show for me and once again I will be attending for two full days as I plan to do at least 35 per cent of the season’s buying there. My budget will decrease slightly this season as I will be saving it for topping up stock of our best-selling items, which is largely dependent on the weather. Other than that, I will be mainly buying casualwear, occasionwear and accessories. I’m always on the lookout for exciting new labels that I can add to the store, and this time I will be looking for a new take on the summer dress which offers the longer length that has recently become popular. We have had a really successful s/s season this year and are already 9 per cent up on last year’s season, which is fantastic. Based on that, I’m feeling very optimistic about s/s 19.”
