My Instagram name is @cerenizgi. I’m 22 years old. I’m a university student. I live in Istanbul. My zodiac sign is Aries. My hobbies are travelling, taking photos, and editing videos. Pink is my favorite color. My favorite dish is manti, (traditional Turkish dumplings). My favorite dessert is magnolia. The latest book I’ve read is 1984. You should definitely watch “Ayla”. My fave song is “MoonMoon” by Ma Maison. My makeup must-have is concealer. My skin care routine essential is sunscreen lotion. I want to go to Thailand at the first chance I get. When and how did your interest in Korean culture begin? You went to Korea for training during the pandemic. What challenges did you face during this period? At first, I found the Korean dramas that I heard from my high school classmates to be antipathetic. As I keep on watching, I’ve become interested in the culture and language. Over time, learning Korean has become a passion for me. I went to a language course for two years and had the opportunity to improve my Korean by speaking with native Korean friends. I was invited to Korea as 1st winner of the Korean speaking contest in which I represented our country. I am currently studying International Trade and Business Administration at a private university and stayed in Korea for 6 months – where I went on an exchange program last year. As schools are online, I both traveled
and worked in the meantime. I am still working with the same company in Korea as a freelancer. Korean cuisine has a quite different taste compared to our country. Did you have a hard time deciding what to eat? When I first went there, I could hardly eat Korean food. It all seemed very strange at first. Seaweed soups, raw octopus, fish cakes… I had lost 6 kg. But over time, I’ve gotten used to Korean food. Especially, Koreans have a pickle called Kimchi, which I cannot have a meal without. A KUWAITI-UKRAINIAN ARTIST:
No one has ever interpreted the tradition of dowry like her Amani Al-thuwaini is a Kuwaiti artist/designer, born in Ukraine. She has exhibited several times in London and Kuwait and her works have also been on display in Prague, Dubai, Brazil, and Bolivia. Modanisa Magazine caught up with Althuwaini to chat about her art fed by tradition and different disciplines. Having a multidisciplinary perspective, Amani Al-thuwani explores how dynamics such as cultural identities and traditions have been changing with globalization and modernism in her art. Al-thuwaini completed her BA in Architecture from Kuwait University and Master of 32
Fine Arts from Goldsmiths, University of London. She has worked as an architect, educator, interior designer, content creator and visual presenter. We had a pleasant conversation with Amani Al-thuwaini, who draws attention to the precious handicrafts.

Your unique take on traditions and different approaches define your artistic stance. Can you explain the importance of it for you and your art? Interdisciplinarity is limitless, therefore the creativity and practice is not confined in one category, material, or approach. It is extremely important to follow my curiosity and delve into different worlds as the topic of research or conversation shifts. How did you decide to work on traditions? I’ve always felt the urge to dig more into what feels unknown or unfamiliar to me. This is how I felt for a long time towards Kuwaiti traditions and culture. I follow what I want to know more of – which led me to new interpretations in which I synthesize different disciplines. How do you define the relationship between cultural identities and modernism? Modernism reshaped cultural identities into hybrid forms and that is what I aim to capture through my works. Visual symbols are important to document as references of these constant shifts. Among many, what artwork of yours are you most proud of? There are a few artworks that are close to my heart, to call one I would say “Gifts on wheels”. For me it represents the reality of our world and my world specifically; in constant change and transforming every day. It represents movement, displacement, and gifting in general.

Solving the formula of success with this question,
“How would I dress if I were you?” After working as an accountant in the automotive industry for many years, Özlem Şimşek realized that she wanted to chase her entrepreneurial dream and that she had to start her own business to be happy. In 2012, she had a few trial runs and in 2015, she started her own ready-to-wear business. First, she launched a 22 square meter “modest clothing boutique” in Küçükçekmece. Initially, she sold ready-made products; but that wasn’t enough for her. She always had the following words of her father in mind: “Dear daughter, you only win when you buy the goods in trade.” She bought fabric from Zeytinburnu to have her 56
dream designs; she got them stitched at private tailors and started selling tunic tops online. While designing the clothes, she was thinking: How would I like my outfit to be? That there was the formula of success: Designing the kind of clothes she would like and wear herself increased her sales. She received plenty of positive feedback – her products were even imitated.

When she had wholesale demands from Morocco, Libya, Iran, and Iraq, she launched her own clothing line. In the first years of her company, one of Özlem Şimşek’s friends introduced her to Modanisa. Offering the opportunity to sell to 140 countries in 5 continents, Modanisa has become a platform where Özlem Şimşek can grasp the collaboration she wishes for. On the very first day of the cooperation, 600 pieces were shipped. But in a very short time, the number of products increased rapidly. İnşirah, founded by Özlem Şimşek, grew with Modanisa: It has become one of the top selling brands. Soon, she plans to invest in one of the Gulf States, on the coast of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Iraq, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates and Oman. Did she ever imagine herself growing this big when she
started this journey? Özlem Şimşek says that her cooperation with Modanisa paved the way for her success and underlines the following advantages that Modanisa provides for her: • “Thanks to Modanisa, I got to know global markets better.” • “There are 400 million women who dress modestly all over the world.
