The Comeback
the social scene
What’s your favorite fall trend?
Fashion hasn’t always been my “thing”. In high school, exactly ten years ago this year, I wanted to be a personal trainer. It wasn’t until almost seven years after I graduated high school that I finally decided what my passion was. One lazy afternoon while browsing Netflix, I stumbled upon a documentary called “The September Issue”. I’d heard about it before, but I didn’t think much of it. I decided to watch the film out of sheer boredom and by the end, I remember sitting straight up on the couch feeling my heart race. I remember yelling out “That’s it!”, while my roommate (now husband) looked at me sideways like I was crazy. I decided right then that I wanted a career in fashion. Not a model or clothing designer, of course. I wanted to be a graphic designer for a fashion magazine.
My ultimate goal for the magazine is to raise the standard of the fashion scene in the Pacific Northwest. I want to ensure that we keep you updated on designers, trends and events in Seattle so our team is here to keep you informed and stylish (of course). Let’s get started!

Fall is upon us, ladies and gents! What better way to celebrate the changing of the seasons than to stock up on your favorite autumn pieces. Sweaters, scarves, boots, etc. have us reaching for our credit card in the attempt to get the best looks of the season. Cut to three years later and here I am! I’ve spent these recent years studying graphic design in Seattle, interning for fashion designers, clothing boutiques and magazine publication companies. I believe my big break came when I landed a freelance design gig with Seattle Fashion Week (which also made a huge comeback this year!). After wrapping up, with SFW in June, I transitioned my focus to revamping MODE. I’ve been following the magazine for a while now and always had an interest in designing for the magazine. My work with Seattle Fashion Week definitely paid off with helping me land not only a graphic designer position, but also the managing editor job. I’m so thrilled to be a part of the staff and am looking forward to taking MODE to the next level.

Erin Reddick BEARSHOT STUDIOS
Hey! Its Erin. Born in Muskegon, Michigan and raised behind a camera in Grand Rapids. Even before the raging selfie movement, I was sneaking shots every chance I had. Then came high school, relocated to Seattle and now college. Business Management classes are helping a ton when it comes to running BEARSHOT STUDIOS. That and loads of coffee. After my degree I plan to continue what I am already doing, but better. I base my style of photography on energy and good vibes. I never PLAN my sessions indoor or outdoor, I just GO FOR IT. Literally driving around attractive people (which is great) and seeking out the perfect location. I don’t believe in limitations so weddings, senior pictures, family portrait, I do it all. But I am in love especially with fashion and commercial photography. My mother always told me “Be brief, be bright be gone!” Visit BEARSHOT STUDIOS online at bearshotphotography.com.

7th Annual Designer Closet Sale Written by Sable Talley
I’m no stranger to living on a budget, but I also understand that every now and then, a girl has to treat herself. So when I found out about the 7th Annual Designer Closet Sale hosted by Baby & Company in downtown Seattle, I just had to check it out. The flyer alone was enough to get me to drive from Tacoma to Seattle on a Sunday afternoon. With brands like Alexander McQueen, Hermès, Diane Von Furstenburg, Opening Ceremony, and the ultimate, Manolo Blahnik, there was no way I was going to pass this up. Baby & Company set up shop in 1978 bringing designer brands that reflect their “commitment to quality over quantity” to the Pacific Northwest. The store has been supportive of many non-profit organizations including On The Boards, a Northwest performing arts theatre. This particular event hosted by B&C was to support The Mockingbird Society, a non-profit whose mission is to improve foster care and end youth homelessness. The sale was set up as a little pop-up shop across the
street from Pacific Place downtown so it was pretty easy to find. I honestly expected crowds of people clamoring through racks trying to find the best pieces, but when I got there, (not that many people). I started out in the clothing racks, with a few pieces catching my eye like a $70 Alexander Wang plain white t-shirt and a denim jacket with a leopard print lining. Then I made my way to the shoes. For the record, I’m proud to say that I’m one of those women who feels like she can rule the world with a great pair of heels. So having the privilege to be in the presence of shoe brands like Prada, Manolo Blahnik and Christian Louboutin literally brought tears to my eyes. Unfortunately, since it was a sale for charity, a lot of the shoes were pretty worn in, which was kind of a disappointment. I ended up not purchasing anything this time because nothing really jumped out at me screaming, “Buy me! You need to wear me!” (my number one shopping rule), but I’ll definitely keep an eye out for next year’s sale.

Manly Beards
We scanned Pinterest to find the top 10 manliest beards. Now, being a fashion magazine, when we say “manly”, we don’t necessarily mean scruffy and Duck Dynasty-esque. We mean fresh cuts and a clean finish that pairs well with a suit and tie or a t-shirt and jeans. So here are our top 10 bearded and devilishly handsome men. logging ain’t easy. The Seattle fashion scene may not be as huge as, let’s say New York or L.A., but that doesn’t mean that we don’t have some creative people who put their heart and soul into not only looking fabulous before they step out of their door, but also sharing their style with us on their blogs and social media pages. One blogger in particular stood out for me, Frilancy Makungu. Not only does she have an interesting name, but she’s also got an interesting story to tell. And thankfully when I reached out to her to be featured as our cover story, she was more than happy to share her style inspiration, blogging routine and even some advice for aspiring fashion bloggers.
Frilancy Makungu: I was born in Zambia, Africa. When I was nine years old, my family relocated to America where my mother made Stevensville, Michigan a wonderful home for my siblings and me. I currently reside in Seattle where I am a fashion stylist, consultant, fashion blogger and part-time CNA. MODE: When did you first fall in love with fashion? Frilancy Makungu: My mother raised my three siblings and me in a singleparent home on a tight budget. So when I saw all of the other kids in middle school and high school wearing designer clothes, I had to get creative with what I had in my closet. This is when I first fell in love with fashion and was inspired to create my blog “Fri’s Closet”. I believe anyone can feel just as stylish and fashionable with what they have at home — I am here to show you how! MODE: What was your goal in starting a fashion blog? 14
MODE Fashion Magazine
“Seattle is a very colorful community filled with very active and attractive individuals. This scene keeps me passionate!” Frilancy Makungu: The primary goal of starting my blog was to educate people from all walks how to look fabulous on a budget. I also find it important to show others how to utilize their existing accessories in various ways. Creativity has always been a constant in my life, as a matter of fact, when I see someone out and about in the city, I can tell what would look amazing on them right away.
MODE: How do you manage your blogging schedule? Frilancy Makungu: To keep my “Fri’s Closet” blog followers up to date on the latest fashion trends, I make sure to schedule a photoshoot each Monday with my personal photographer and friend, Erin Reddick, owner of BEARSHOT STUDIOS. These shoots can last anywhere from six to eight hours per

session. We drive through downtown Seattle and search until we find the perfect place to shoot! Everything is natural and on the spot; this is the way we keep the experience of Fri’s Closet authentic! By the end of our shoot, I have a full week’s worth of new ideas and twists on current trends for my blog. MODE: How do you come up with concepts for shoots? Frilancy Makungu: Concepts come naturally because I am always on the lookout for what’s new, what’s hot and what Fri’s Closet is all about. When I see someone on the street with style, I become inspired. I am always styling in my mind. Everything comes together through my blog, where I make sure to incorporate an item or accessory I already have in my closet with Seattle’s latest fashion looks. MODE: Which social media platforms do you prefer? Frilancy Makungu: Instagram is my ultimate favorite for social media other than my blog. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are also in my top five. MODE: Do you have a favorite accessory? If so, what is it and where did you get it from?
MODE: One of our recent favorite looks was the light pink lace dress. Where were you headed in that lovely outfit? Frilancy Makungu: I was headed to La Conner, Washington, a few hours north of the city for a wine tasting on the docks with my girlfriends. We snapped a few shots for my blog and it was magic! MODE: What do you love most about living in Seattle? Frilancy Makungu: I love the diversity; so many people leading different lives in different ways, but we all mesh together as a fashion-fabulous city. Seattle is a very colorful community filled with very active and attractive individuals. This scene keeps me passionate!

The collection pays homage to the past with an exciting new twist. MODE: If you could be featured in a fall designer campaign, which designer would you choose and why? Frilancy Makungu: I would choose Michael Costello because he has remarkable vision amongst the current designers out there. He has the innate ability to transform any woman with any body type into a goddess. MODE: What advice would you give aspiring fashion bloggers? Frilancy Makungu: Be consistent. The Man From
U.N.C.L.E. Written by Sable Talley
Up until a date night with my husband to see Ant Man, I had never heard of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. But after watching a preview for the film before enjoying another amazing Marvel superhero movie, I was definitely intrigued. Not only because of the amazingly handsome leading men, Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) and Armie Hammer (The Lone Ranger) who, by the way, pulls off a very convincing Russian accent, but also because of the tasteful costume design choices of the entire cast. For those who didn’t know (like myself), the movie is based from a 1960s television show. U.N.C.L.E. stands for the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement. Basically, CIA agent Napoleon Solo (Cavill) and KGB operative Illya Kuryakin (Hammer) are spies tasked with taking down a criminal organization developing nuclear weapons during the Cold War. And although the plot line seemed easy enough to follow, I was more fascinated by the costume design.
What I loved most, aside from the creative plot, was the maturity of the film. Yes, there were some originally hilarious scenes, but as far as putting equally gorgeous men and women on screen, they left a lot to the imagination. Kudos to Guy Ritchie and cast for delivering a new classic in film and in style. Visit manfromuncle.com for more information about the film and to purchase tickets.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF WARNER BROS.
Academy Award nominee costume designer Joanna Johnston definitely did her research for her work on this film as she ultimately chose to design most of the looks from scratch. Tailored mens’ suits perfectly finished with pocket squares and colorcoordinated ties literally explode in this movie, in a good way, of course. How come more men don’t dress like this anymore?! Choosing a favorite look from the film proved to be difficult, however, I was mostly drawn to Cavill’s cool grey suit in a scene from the racetrack party, probably because he’s sitting next to the gorgeous Elizabeth Debicki, who plays Victoria Vinciguerra, wearing a beautiful top made of Valentino fabric.
