Interviewing this charismatic entrepreneur, whose larger-than-life personality fills the room, is ready and willing to talk about what it takes to make a company stand out in this technology community.

Why is CityGuru invite only and how do you decide who joins? Your hot spot restaurant is? My favorite restaurant, it’s a secret. I don’t take dates there unless it’s going in the right direction and I’ve taken a handful of my close friends. Where did you get your idea for City Guru and where are you hoping it will go/lead to? The idea really culminated from my own personal experiences. I was very fortunate to experience amazing times at a young age. I recall thinking that I wish more people could experience what I did and that it’d be so cool if one day, I could have my same amazing-personal experiences in any city I traveled too. If anyone has traveled, you’ll understand how daunting it is to know where to go and what to do and how knowing someone can make all the difference when you travel. It had to have been 8 years ago or so when I told myself “ I don’t know how I’m going to do it, but one day, I’ll build a company around experiences and making them more readily available to

those who’d want them (at the time I was only thinking of myself and my friends)”

What lead you to being an entrepreneur? –There really isn’t any epiphany-esk moment. I was fired from my first job after college and was told by my boss that I was terrible in sales and would never been in sales. I waited tables and bartended for a short while at Chili’s until I got hired at a small brokerage. It took 6 months before a business partner and I opened our own company. I think luck and timing is what made me an entrepreneur. I have a drive that always keeps me going. It’s not about winning or losing, hell, I’ve failed more than I’ve succeeded and I’m sure it’ll always be this way. I’m just not afraid to get my butt kicked, pick myself up off the ground and go at it again. I think all of us possess this, but some of us just aren’t afraid of it.

Every entrepreneur seems to have a career low prior to becoming successful (Jobs got fired from Apple) I’m not sure if I can comment on this one yet. I’ve done some great things in my life. But I think success has to be measured by those around us and I believe life is still granting me time to measure the success(s), failure(s) of Drew Morrison.

Who inspire(d)(s) you? –My inspirations are people who are directly in my life. I surround myself with people that matter to me and that I respect because I’d much rather look up to people I can hang out with, then those I can only read about. As a child, books inspired me… any book about science fiction, mystery and adventure. The countless hours day dreaming I would do as a child were because my imagination was crafted from books as simple as the Hardy Boys to as deep as Moby Dick. I feel really lucky that I had books to help me grow.

In College I had two major people affect my life, Dr. Joe Blankenau my college advisor and my best friend [ever] Chris Kennedy. I was a reckless student who thought he was too smart for everyone and had a huge chip on his shoulder. I didn’t really care for the world around me and thought I had been given a bad chance at life. Chris and Dr. Blankenau offered me guidance through wisdom and protection through friendship and for the first time in my life, I didn’t feel alone, scared or angry. Having them care so much for me (a stranger in reality), changed my life and every new smile I make is built upon a solid foundation that those two helped me achieve. My current inspirations are some of my oldest friends and many of my new ones.

I’m fascinated by people and the process we take from acquaintance to friend. That path that allows me to get to know someone always reveals what makes us each unique and I’ve always treasured the experience that comes from

it. Inspiration to me is the great memories that fill my life because of those in my life. There are so many to name and thank and I try to make people understand every day how much they mean to me.

Where does your drive come from? The thought of a family one day. As far as I know. I’m the last of my kind… my blood. My legacy starts or dies with me.

I can think of nothing more rewarding then the laughter of my great, great, grandchildren and all of their children and grandchildren as they get together at reunions.

As they take their first breath, first cry, meet their first love and chase their dreams as I have done mine. The impact they may make might be small to the world, but for me, it means everything. For a kid who doubted his existence and questioned why he was here, there is no greater answer then knowing and understanding what makes me happy. My drive comes from me wanting to offer the best life for my family, so they can do the same for theirs. The world may not know my name, but my loved ones will, and in the end, that’s all that I ask for.

What was your childhood like? My childhood wasn’t easy. I was orphaned as a kid. Adopted (though I was given the best opportunities in life to succeedroof over my head, food on the table and a great education), life was not kind to me as a child. I struggled fitting in and couldn’t get close to my family or anyone for that matter. It’s why I read so much, so I could escape the life I was in. I didn’t have bad parents or a family and I am thankful for everything I went through.

It made me who I am today and I’d relive every moment if asked too. I was born in South Korea, raised in Iowa, went to school in Nebraska. I’m from a family of 10 kids, I am second oldest. I worked in factories and corn fields growing up, worked on cars, was an athlete, nerd and loved music (singing and instrumental). I got into the typical trouble and fights as a Midwestern boy, drank my first beer at 9, kissed my first girl when I was 12 and won my first fight at 14. I was popular as a kid, but felt more comfortable around my friends who weren’t thought of the “popular” crowd. I loved movies, reading, running and spent every waking hour day dreaming and trying to figure out how I would leave our town of barely 1,000 people. All in all, emotionally life was a struggle for me, but I had an amazing upbringing. The people in the Midwest are truly amazing people they are kind, honest, forgiving, supportive. My adopted family and the community offered me a life that I can only describe as, exactly what I needed and it makes me happy to know that that was my life

What is the best advice you can give to someone wanting to be an entrepreneur? Reward. Is nothing without risk. If you won’t dump your savings, your security (job) and sanity then you’ll never build anything worth fighting for. But if you are, then jump in feet first. Don’t worry about the details, they’ll figure themselves out. Fail often and fail fast. Build a team that makes up for ALL of your inabilities (in reality, you can only do 1 thing good) and if you have someone in your life, don’t forget to tell them how much you love them for letting you follow your crazy, 99% chance of failure, but so worth it –DREAM. Follow your heart and find your Cheers. Both will get you through this. Win. Lose or Draw.

“The Man of the Future Collection” created for Built for Man by Franscisco Hernandez is all about future, how they see men’s wear evolving. It was beautifully shot at the Chihuly Museum in Tacoma. We selected this building due to its futuristic take and the idea was to showcase the guy of the future waiting on this “spaceship” to arrive, to create motion, just like you would see in a modern futuristic subway stop, there is this element of waiting and running to that was the sole purpose.

more than once to take it all in. There are so many moving parts that there is always something new to discover with each visit. Maybe that is why so many people have made PNB part of their holiday tradition.

The complexity of the performance speaks mostly to the number of elements. Often there is so much going on onstage that there is something for everyone. The first viewing is for taking it all in. After that, the casual ballet fan that just wants to watch the

nied, but Nutcracker at PNB is like no other. The liberties taken with the set make it much bigger, literally.

A signature moment is when the tree grows from 14 feet to 28 feet. Sendak adds some of the most amazing set effects. Even 30-years-old, it is more intricate than most modern sets.

Exclusive to PNB, if you haven’t seen Nutcracker at McCaw Hall, you haven’t seen it. The set design by Maurice Sendak exceeds any other set I have seen and the Choreography by PNB Founding Artistic Director Kent Stowell is so complex it has to be seen

Those that like the subtleties of the story will look around the party scene for little story elements that are a reward for paying attention. They are also something that keeps the performance fresh for Nutcracker regulars.

Principal Dancer Kaori Nakamura was excellent as usual on opening night in the role of Clara. In a role she has performed before, she was comfortable but flawless. In a turn, opening night featured Soloist Benjamin Griffiths as the Prince. Artistic Director Peter Boal is showing the depth of talent at PNB by letting other dancers perform the lead than just principals.

On paper, it is a bold move, but when it is a soloist of Andrew Bartee’s talent it makes sense. For those that remember, Bartee broke out from under the principal shadow in last month’s Emergence. While technically proficient, Griffiths wasn’t as seamless as previous per-

formers, but that might have been opening night nerves.

Everyone has a favorite part of PNB’s Nutcracker.

Many love the peacock dance and even have a favorite performer. Some plan their ballet visits around casting, I know someone that plans her visit around who dances the part of the peacock. The Snowflakes dance and the Waltz of the Flowers are other crowd favorites.

This year, PNB will be celebrating 30 years of their exclusive Nutcracker. It is worth seeing just for the set design. Even if you have seen Nutcracker somewhere else, you have not seen this one unless you have seen it on the PNB stage. Once you see it, you will join the ranks of Seattleites that have made it part of their holiday tradition. Nutcracker at PNB runs through Dec. 29.

here was a lot to wine about at the 20Something The New Vintage party at the Fremont Studios on November 23, 2013. Organized by Washington State Wine Commission and Visit Seattle, the sold out event gathered all the young,

twenty something’s as they got to sample different wines. This is the event’s 8th year and according to Janet Christopher, Vice President of Tourism for Visit Seattle stated that people from out of state would attend this event and make a weekend out of it while staying in hotels. “Twenty something’s are the new wine

teach them about the palate.”

Guests were handed a glass to sample wine as they entered the purple-lighted room (to match the logo). The atmosphere was filled with the spinning sounds of DJ Tina T as she stood high on a podium for everyone to hear. Many volunteers were scattered as each one held two kinds of wine for guests to sample.

Some of the wines that were sampled that night were Arbor Crest Wine Cellars, Columbia Crest, Five Star Cellars, etc. Pike Place Brewery was also in attendance for the people who needed that extra kick of beer.

The event did not forget to satisfy the stomach as guests also had the opportunity to sample sweet

on apple slices with crème fraiche and chive. O’Asian Kitchen & Lounge had their delicious chicken curry pie as Uli’s Famous Sausage was handing out samples of their gourmet sausage for the carnivorous cravings in all of us.

As the night went on, more and more guests mingled with one another and enjoyed the night away trying each, and every different type of wine. The supply of food seemed to be unlimited, as guests would go back to the same table for seconds, thirds, and fourths.

With an enormous supply of wine and food, it was clear to see why so many people wanted to attend from out of state. And there was that other reason to why it

Savvy Sips I Written by LB Dutchess

t is official! The Holiday Season is in full swing! So here are some Savvy Sips secrets that can help take your events from Wonderful to WOW! (ok, maybe not so secret but great non the less! ;) ) Kiss ~ Keep things simple Stupid! Sometimes we have make things harder than they need to be by trying to offer everything under the sun. Come up with a "featured beverage" and share it with pride!

Having a Red wine & a white also will round things out nicely. I usually suggest for a white, a non sweet / non overly oaky Chardony. For Red, a Cab is always nice, but again something a bit on the lighter side so it appeals to more people. Don't be offended if people bring their own beverages and prefer to drink them - it just ensures they will enjoy the evening more!

Try to make sure you have the proper types of glasses for the wine you are serving or the beverages you are providing. To some people it is not a big deal, but to many it can enhance or ruin their experience when drinking. And really, who doesn't feel fab with a proper glass in their hand. On a budget? Goto your thrift store and pick out all different types and arrange on your drink station by size or mixed up to add to the fun of the setting you are creating. Remember, make your drinks, glass wear and accessories all part of your deco!

Have Water everywhere! In glasses, in bottles and with straws! Everyone drinks their water differently and if you want people to stay hydrated make it easy!

How you feel the next day is usually attached to how you remember an event so when your friends get hang overs it can put a damper on the memories. How can you help with that? Upgrade your liquor. Stay away from the bottom 2 shelves and try for the second and 3rd shelf down. It's not about the price it is about the refinement of the alcohol. The better it is refined the less the hangover. Substitute Mezcal for Tequila to make those types of drinks smoother. Use local craft liquors to add a different flavor to your regular recipes and create conversation! If you don't want the alcohol going straight to the blood stream, the sugars from juice are just the right thing so stick with juice for your mixers! And the Vitamins in them help too!

Finally, make sure you have great bite size foods for "soaking" up alcohol. or many, the holidays can be a stressful time but for the proper gentleman shines. Not just because a gentleman thrives under pressure, but because his politeness, thoughtfulness and selflessness makes him the perfect man to have around. Holiday parties, holiday meals and gift giving can be the source of stress for many but the modern gentleman is always prepared.

Gentlemen are the perfect addition to your holiday party. As hosts, they are thoughtful and accommodating, as guests they are more of a participant than a bystander. Many guests show up to a party expecting to be entertained, the gentleman shows up expecting to have a good time. It is a subtle difference, but that difference makes all the difference in the world.

As a participant, a gentleman knows when to offer assistance to the host so the host

can take over other duties like greeting the other guests.

He knows to wear something where the sleeves can be rolled up in case a hand is needed with dishes or mild cleaning.

A gentleman always has a story or two in his holster to entertain others. A gentleman’s story is never bragging about himself. Those stories are rarely interesting, real men tell stories that make other people look good. This is a good time to tell a flattering story about the host to some people at the party might not have heard. It is better if the story is a little self-depreciating.

Gentlemen are also sensitive to their party plus one.

When bringing a guest to a holiday party the gentleman is never far away. Ditching a date is unfitting the distinguished gentleman. But he also doesn’t hover if his date is making friends. When invited to be a plus one to a party, the gentleman knows that his actions are a reflection on his date and acts accordingly. He will have a stories at the ready that reflect positively on his date and have the story of how they met prepared should anyone ask. To be a proper gentleman one must have excellent social skills so he will be perfectly content is his date has to step away for a minute.

There are two types of items a gentleman brings to a party, something for the host’s collection or something to be shared. Unless the person is a nondrinker, a bottle of wine is a perfectly acceptable gift to bring to a party. When bringing a bottle of wine the gentleman knows to bring something he likes that the host can drink at a later date. It is insulting to expect a bottle of wine to be opened at the party. It is a subtle sign that the guest does not respect the choices of the host and will not plan good food and wine pairings.

When bringing something to share at a potluck, the rule to follow is the three S rule. The host will have a main dish so guests should bring a Signature Side with Story. Having a signature side dish is always a plus. My baked beans make me the first person on a BBQ guest list. Once, someone liked them so much at a family member’s BBQ that I got invited to their neighbor’s party the following weekend just so that they could have the beans.

Having a signature side also makes it easy to decide what to bring to a given potluck. For a brunch I bring Baked French Toast. For a dinner party I might bring Baked Shrimp Afredo. No matter the dish, each has a story. It is more distinctive than a dish purchased at the store on the way to the party.

of the holiday. The family holiday gathering is different from other holiday parties in that each person is expected to interact with everyone person at some point. Even when it is not his family, the gentleman is the perfectly at ease. When celebrating Christmas for the first time with new family members I found something I had in common with everyone to create a connection. It made what could have been a hostile night quite pleasant.

Gentlemen are perfect gift givers. His attentiveness makes finding the perfect gift easy. A gentleman will remember that item in the store window that struck someone’s fancy months ago. He might have even gone back and bought and set it aside for a future gift. A real man listens and knows what would be a good gift without needing hints dropped.

In receiving, gentlemen understand what “It is the thought that counts” really means. What better gift can someone give than to show that they think about you? Like any real man, I appreciate any gift that is given to me in the spirit it is given. I will wear every shirt or sweater that is gifted to me. The only exception is if it is too small because no one wants to see that.

In the military one can expect mockery at any given moment so it is best not to give platoon mates ammunition. I would proudly wear a shirt that was given to me one Christmas. One person made a joke and I said, “My mother gave it to me.” He retracted his statement and complimented me on it. No one ever made fun of that shirt again because they understood that if your mother gives it to you, out of respect you have to wear it sometime. No one can make fun of a gift from a child without being unseemly so they should be worn with pride as well.

A gift is a physical representation of the affection someone has for you. When someone gives tickets to a show or event that the receiver has not heard of it could be the giver trying to share their interests with a person they like. That should be appreciated. When an in law I didn’t know gave me a gift it meant that even in the hectic holiday season they took a moment to think about me. She has my sincere thanks. Which is why I am always happy with every gift I receive but I most get excited about the gift giving. A gentleman in the spirit of the season will have fun with the gift giving process more than in the opening of the presents.

Whether a guest or a host, the gentleman is well suited to create a stress and drama free environment for the holidays. May your holiday season be happy and bright and maybe even a little distinguished.
