Selecting models to showcase her designs in the show consisted not only of women who were size and height appropriate, but who also had similar looks. Benedit-Begley said she thought both of her models had a sophisticated look and natural beauty. She also said that they were elegant and could be seen behind the clothes while not taking too much away from the clothing itself. Model Imelda Tolentino who wore the winning design said she and Soreyda communicated about her expectations and what needed to be done. “She gave me ideas on what the clothing looked like and what kind of walk she was looking for. From that note, I did my best and showed everyone that we deserved to win. Practice makes perfect,” Tolentino says. “I had fun working with her and she is a great designer”

e all have dreams and we all have ambitions and for nearly everyone, there is someone out there who is looking to squash them. Sometimes its for money, other times for power and sometimes just for sex; either way there is someone out there who will try to take advantage of you. Its up to you to learn what to look for and prevent falling into one of these traps.
Obviously this is a perfect world and there are many variations to this basic breakdown, but its pretty close to the actual process even in todays internet “Modeling Agency” world.
A true agency runs like any other business. Everyone is trying to make a living and business is business. The model, although a gorgeous representation of one is, at the end of the day, a marketing representative. They are hired to There are many different scams out there, market or sell a product. End of story... especially today with the advent of the internet, but the standing scam still is model scouts. Now With that said the agency is trying to make with that said, not all model scouts are scam money from clients and not the models artists, many are legitimate business people. So themselves. They will train the models and how do you know which is which? Are there prepare them to become contractors, per say, any other scams that I need to be worried about? of their corporation that they will later use to market a clients product or service or line of clothing...etc...
1. Agency Scouts:
So how do you identify a true agency from an A true agency doesn’t ask for money! Actually elaborate scam? First educate yourself on the its vice versa. It will cost and agency money to business itself. Check the Better Business Bureau educate and prepare a model that they represent. at (http://www.bbb.org). This organization maintains a very detailed list of businesses who I’m not going to go into the whole agency are accredited with them. Of course a company process in this article, but lets cover the basics: not listed with the BBB doesn’t automatically make them a scam either, but if they have been - Model gets scouted or walks into an agency reported they will be listed as such. - Agency requests “Profile Shoots” - Agency accepts model The second and sometimes best option, is to ask - Agency sets up first photoshoot around. Find out from other models or parents - Agency markets models Comp Card, etc on what they feel about this agency and how has - Model gets job this organization helped progress their career. If - Agency get paid its a scam, somebody will say. Of course take - Model gets paid...Done! both sides of every story. I’m pretty sure you can find some disgruntled ex-employees, in any

I don’t like to say it, but I see a great deal of these guys in the industry. They are guys with, sometimes expensive, camera equipment who only shoot for their own sexual gratification.
It does tell the world you are trained and you have attended a “finishing school” per say, but its not worth the money. I have yet to hear one good story about a “Modeling School”.
I specified sexual because a GWC is looking to fulfill a need that a normal photographer wouldn’t be pursuing. I mean their are plenty of amateur photographers out there, none of them are trying to have sex with what they are shooting. Especially the landscape photographers who shoot beautiful picturesque landscapes and trees, etc...outch!
Why are they bad? They will take anyone for money. “Can I Model?” Sure!
I hate saying that some people are not model material because the industry is very vast and it is looking for a very large talent base. Every age, every sex, and every size, but I would also like to say that I’m a good singer. I can sing, but honestly my church doesn’t even want me to All jokes aside a GWC is easy to detect. They and they are an institution of God. Sometimes will tell you whatever you want to hear to get in life we have to admit what we are and what naked. End of story. From “I can make you we are not good at. famous”, to “I can get you into Playboy”, etc. Just about anything, I think I have heard them Remember a Modeling Agency only gets paid all over time. Well not me personally, but you if you get work, if you aren’t marketable then know what I mean...awkward...just kidding. they will not invest in you. A Modeling School Nobody can “Make you famous”. We just can’t. Modeling International’s last issue was read over 23,000 times and even we can’t make any idol promises. Truth of the matter is, all we as well as many other agencies and representatives can do, is put your face out there for others to see. Eventually the marketing rule of 7 will take place and people will start to remember you. Hopefully that will lead to more, etc. But your overall fame and fortune has to come from you. So don’t fall to idol promises.
on the other hand, gets paid by you. Not anyone else. The more models that walk through their door, the more money they make. Just repeating my favorite saying...end of story! Lastly they charge for everything! Photos, Composite Cards, Supplies, Portfolio, etc. I have heard horror stories of models spending thousands of dollars when they stood no chance of every becoming a model.
The sad part is, the really good models get feed up and never actually enter the industry. We are loosing tons of wonderful talent because of these educational institutions who, in the end, really only teach you how to walk the runway Modeling schools do teach you very marketable and eat like a lady. 1

riana was born in Cottonwood Arizona on September 24th. At age two when most children have to be prodded to smile for a picture, Briana would light up the camera with a warm smile and sparkling eyes. She instantly attracted all the attention in whatever room she was in. This charisma has followed her into her teens. Becoming a model was a natural choice for Briana. She is charming, witty, and personable, drawing friends to her with her winning smile and non-judgmental acceptance of everyone she meets. She has the unique ability to fit in anywhere, and can go from the popular girl to the offbeat anime lover to the loud silly goofball at the drop of a hat but, she is very serious about her work.

The Cougar Phenomenon
I
n our society we are bombarded with images that reflect our cultural norms. We simulate these images in an effort to perform the roles for which our culture proscribes. In effect, we continue to fuel an endless feedback loop of reinforcing gendered roles. One endearing component of our societal norms, also evident in a majority of cultures, are the power structures that define and reinforce gender roles that place men as the provider and protector over women, and women as the nurturer. These power structures observed in our society, that define what is appropriate for our gender, are directly challenged in this new phenomenon of what we call “The Cougars”, or rather, older women seeking younger men for romantic relationships. This new emergence in popular culture has reconstructed the meaning, significance and affect that brought change to our societal views. Before delving into the significance that the term Cougar plays in our popular culture I find it best to clarify the actual definition of the Cougar and why it is used in our society to classify this particular type of relationship. A Cougar is a large cat in the Felidae family, and is also known as a panther or mountain lion. The Cougar is characterized by its predator-like tendency to stalk and ambush its prey. Therefore, when the word cougar is applied to the human species, and a woman is compared to a cougar, this implies a negative predator-like tendency in her seeking out younger men, or rather, “stalking her prey”. Clearly, this label reflects society’s negative perception of women who engage in such relationships. Some can even assume that since there is no such name associated with an older man seeking relationships with younger women, when the roles are switched society perceives something unnatural, and predatorlike of women who assume the “male role” by

performing sexuality and gender in a way that is only appropriate for, and expected of men. Inherent in the term Cougar, and in choosing this particular word to classify a woman based on her sexual preference, is a bias. Clearly, the term Cougars only acknowledges the subjects attraction to men, as she is “on the prowl” for her “prey”. It does not consider the young man who also deviates from the cultural norm, in his basic sexual attraction towards a much older woman, whose sex role does not allow her to be desirable or sexually attractive due to her age. The mutual attraction between the older woman and the younger man is virtually ignored, obscuring the notion that beauty is subjective, and the basic truth that you do not have to be young to be desired, or to be attractive. Infiltrating the main stream media, and embedding itself in our popular culture, we are witnessing an emergence of new gendered roles that deviate from the cultural norm. Throughout most of our history it has always been acceptable and even expected for older men to seek out younger women. Now, in direct opposition to our cultural standard, and in fact, creating much cognitive dissonance within our culture, older women are assuming this constructed male sex role, and rejecting the maternal role assigned to older women which implies that past a certain age they can not engage in, or display certain behaviors typical of men. A great example where an older woman engages in “Cougar” behavior in our popular culture is in a short clip of VH1’s reality television show, “Brooke Knows Best”- a show in which Brooke’s life is put on display. In this particular clip Brooke’s mother, Linda, has an ongoing relationship with a nineteen year old boy named Charlie. Brooke resents her mother’s relationship and feels betrayed h tt p :// w w w. modelingintl . c om

The Cougar Phenomenon that her mother, who is approximately fortyeight years old, is dating a boy who is nearly Brooke’s age. In this clip it is evident that Linda’s behavior is received a as taboo, and as an impious act not suitable for her age, and not appropriate for her role as a mother. The deviance associated with being a “Cougar” runs so deep in our cultural roots to the extent that on this reality show Brooke refuses to accept her mother’s decision, and distances herself from her own mother. Suffice to say, this is indeed a television show, and perhaps the “real” reactions are scripted. However, even in my observations of many viewers of this show and this particular clip, outrage is the common response to Linda’s relationship with the young boy. Now, in our historical acceptance of young women engaging in romantic relationships with much older men, I wonder why this profound outrage was virtually non-existent. The double standard evident in an older woman’s relationship with a younger man verses an older man’s relationship with a younger women brings to the forefront the discussion of the cultural binary views of the two genders. Characteristic of the male species, or rather, how we perceive the males species, and therefore, how older men perform the gender role assigned to them centers on the idea that men stay youthfully immature, sexually active and sexually driven in pursuit of young women. On the contrary, older women are perceived as, and tend to conform to the assumption that with age women grow less sexually active, less sexually attractive, and more focused on maternal duties. Moreover, the hierarchal value system of the genders, which places a women’s value in her beauty and ability to attract a mate, and the males value on his assets, ability to protect and provide her serve as a significant aspect
24 |

|
of the binary views of gender. For, if youth is a quality of beauty in our society, and a women’s value is based primarily upon her beauty, how then can she be valued with age? This concept only serves to put a time limit on a woman’s sexuality, and her options of mates to choose from, as her value diminishes with age. Furthermore, if a man’s value is based solely on his income, as long as he can provide for a woman he is valued, and therefore he has an indefinite number of potential mates, and is not limited to women his own age because his value is observed by both young and old. Therein creates a major crisis for older women when older men are choosing younger women, and older women are culturally prohibited by the gender roles assigned to them, from choosing younger men. Their gender role serves to limit older women to many possibilities that their male counterparts can enjoy. Therefore, with the emergence of the Cougar Phenomena, these power structures are brutally challenged, re-creating our socially constructed views. In direct response to the inequalities of our cultural notions of gender comes the “Cougar”, a term that deviates from the cultural norm. It is the women who choose to step into the so called man’s role, acknowledging that culture does not determine beauty and value, and rather, that the individual who holds agency of choice, has the power to “affect culture” (Pierre Bourdieu) In effect, that is exactly what the new phenomenon of “The Cougars” has done in our popular culture. The age of the Cougar defies the very foundation on which our gender roles rest, claiming value as equal to that of a man by expressing their sexuality, sexual attraction and sexual attractiveness in the face of a society that says these attributes do not belong to women who are past a certain age. Women are in fact taking back their power. 1 h tt p :// w w w. modelingintl . c om

t a time when tall willow thin models have been cornering the fashion modeling industry, an incredible revolution has been taking place. While plus size models had opened doors for fashion stereotypes to expand, a newer breed of top models arrives. Gorgeous, childlike and in some cases even shorter than average; the petite model has begun to steal the show. They are the new wonder models that do not fit the standard six foot, size zero, but hails in the lower five-two to five-six foot range. These models utilize qualities that have long existed in child models; Old Navy and Children’s Gap commercials come to mind. Petite models exhibit a spark of that same precociousness that’s sets off certain fashion wardrobes with a look that sells. The fact that ex-model socialite, and wife of the Prime Minister Sarkozy, Carla Bruni wore a jacket from Stella McCartney’s Gap Kids Line on television says it all. I am also especially impressed with Tavi Gevinson. This thirteen year old fashionista and blog writing sensation shows off her grown-up fashion loves and creations by photographing them on her dainty stature. She sets yet another outstanding example.
This is not to say that petite models are new. They have always been here in varying degrees in the world of modeling. But there has been a prejudice that exists when speaking of the petite model. Traditionally, petite models work as “close up” photo models and will continue to do so. They are hand and face models or booked for body parts instead of the body as a whole, based on the premise, that their shorter stature doesn’t flatter clothing. If a petite model is booked to model clothing, they are asked to appear tall and lengthy, which creates challenges for the models and the photographers. But the challenges in turn have fostered ingenuity and creativity. Through this remarkable process, an array of singular qualities have arisen from these very marketable petite models that the fashion world has but begun to embrace.

Are you too short?
Petite models do have a niche in the fashion industry. In fact, modeling body parts for shoes, jewelry, makeup and hair styles has always been available for petite models. What hasn’t been there are the big runway shows and high fashion photo spreads in top fashion magazines. If the only way into high fashion right now is to model shoes, then model those shoes, but from there, your career can go uphill. How far is up to you. J a n u a r y 2010

They may not be professional photographers, but they can still help you achieve different looks for practice until you find a professional. Good places to look for willing low cost and possibly free photographers are on college campuses where they offer photography classes and workshops. Realize ahead of time that getting the best photos takes time and effort. When you find a photographer, be sure you know what you want from the photo session. Petite Model Do you ride horses? By all means,
do a session posing with horses. Are you a musician? Do you paint? How about doing a photo session featuring you as an artist extreme? Find a friendly pet store and pose with puppies and kittens as well as exotic types of animals, iguanas, snakes, tarantula’s, and whatever else they may sell. Be creative and find places to expand on who you are individually and make a pictorial statement, using the skills you have learned from practice shots. Most important, model clothing and fashion. Get shots that have a catalog feel in them, with dresses, jeans, lingerie and swimwear as well as shots that range outside of the catalogue. Get to know the differences between high fashion, glamour and catalogue shots. Find models you admire and try to emulate some of their looks and then create your own. A lot of this work can be done on location at stores where they sell the several types of garments in question. Getting approval to shoot in and on locations, such as furniture stores, fashion boutiques, vintage clothing shops, is usually not a problem if you approach the store owners and managers in a professional way.

Aim high! Find budding fashion designers who might be interested having pictures taken of their creations. New designers are as anxious for the exposure as you are. It may even end up as free advertising if you use or post the pictures – always a good selling point. A great starting point again might be a college campus or fashion school of design. To sum up, each session should have a direct purpose to practice with the ultimate goal of building a portfolio with your best shots. Setting goals and a location will help to improve the professionalism between you and your photographer. The fashion industry has held back the petite models for so long, that the idea of a five-foot four inch model still takes some getting used to and the jobs at this point may not be as forthcoming as they would be to a five foot eleven girl, but even that is changing. The new influx of petite models has arrived, but there will still be competition. For this reason, your attitude and the way you approach the modeling industry can make all the difference. Your work ethic, perseverance, drive and determination, and your developed skills in front of the lens of a camera count as much if not more, than beauty or height. 1 h tt p :// w w w. modelingintl . c om

live and breathe art and nature, especially the two combined. These endeavors had begun from the time I got my first camera at age 6, and have provided a renaissance in my recent life. Photography offers my psyche a greater creative purpose - one than can silently and powerfully be shared with the world’s audience. It truly is a never-ending study, not just of tools and techniques but one of perspective to capture art that may touch the soul of another. My nature is to realize visual stimulus that evokes thought, drama or controversy. My mind’s eye sees a paradox in each image amongst the balance and counter-balance, harmony and asymmetry.

MODELING INTERNATIONAL
I define beauty, or redefine it. I capture it. I embrace it. These are my core philosophies. They compel me. They ultimately define my objective. Photography allows those that dare to capture reality and have reality capture them. With each shot, I strive to encompass the real story behind each image with a touch of the surreal. I work with modeling agencies and models all over the country to create images that are wicked and wonderful, powerful and artistic. With 14 years experience in the fashion and beauty industry including makeup artistry and wardrobe styling, I specialize in model portfolio development. 1 http://www.sublimeimage.com

ave you ever wondered, how can I whiten teeth using Photoshop? Its actually quite easy. In this simple tutorial I will show you, one of the most fundamental beauty aspects and how to achieve it digitally.
Step 4: Select “Yellows”
Step 1: Spend an hour (hopefully not for you) painfully selecting just the white areas of the teeth using the Lasso tool of your choice (Hit L)
Step 2:
Step 5:
From the menu choose: “Select” / “Modify” / “Feather”
Turn the saturation way down, but preview the changes. You don’t want to go too much or the teeth start to look fake.
Honestly I try to feather just about everything. It removes the “I photoshoped the hell out of this photo” look. Instead it mixes everything nicely and removes the awkward lines.
