Cohen, a contestant on this season’s Bravo show - ‘Make Me A Supermodel’ (http:// www.bravotv.com/make-me-asupermodel/portfolio-chris). We asked some questions. He shared his views. And we learned a few things about this future modeling star: Where did you grow up? I was born in Libertyville, Il just outside of Chicago which is also where I spent my childhood and teenage years. As soon as I graduated from High School I moved into downtown Chicago and really enjoyed life in the city. Then it seemed time for a change so I packed my bags and headed to Los Angeles where I pursued a degree in Fashion Design and started my career in modeling. Living on the West Coast was the most fun I’ve had in my life, I love LA! Was it happy or tense? Growing up I was sort of sheltered living in suburban simplicity. I think knowing from an early age that I was destined for more, so the need to explore and experience new things was only natural. I embrace approaching abstract or foreign situations; I’m never satisfied with the norm or what everyone else is doing. Family support or did you go it alone? My family was always there for me, but I think having outrageous dreams and goals might have made them take me less seriously in the past. But I have definitely grown up a bit since then. I have always been stubborn and extremely independent. When I set my sights on something I go for it full force (same applies to my shopping habits) until I am satisfied with the results.

When did someone first say “you should be a model?” Whenever I have been in a public place, people have automatically noticed me. I just have some unique quality that makes people never forget my face. I hate that sometimes because I o5en don’t recognize people that I’ve only met extremely casually or that know me through someone else. So needless to say I’m bad with names and faces. But working regularly in high end retail or even just shopping around LA at least 10 people a day were telling me to start modeling the clothes instead of shopping and selling them. So eventually I couldn’t escape my fate; that’s when I dedicated myself to becoming a successful model. Photo: Bravo/Suza Scalora

Before appearing on ‘Make Me A

Supermodel 2’ (2009) did you work for any agencies? Currently, I am working independently with photographers freelance, strengthening my portfolio. I am however seeking representation from agencies in NYC and overseas. What were your most significant jobs prior? I have had lots of different jobs that were very exciting and challenging. I worked with Marc By Marc Jacobs while in La. I have always been in and out of retail; currently at Zara; it’s a dog’s life. I also worked for a PR company doing graphic design projects and even got a little taste of Beverly Hills real estate. Anything I do I try to make exciting, even if it’s not exactly what I want to be doing at the time. How about photographers? I managed to network with really talented photographers as I continue to do today. I think my favorite photographer I have worked with is Peter Palladino. Suza Scholora, from the MMAS candy shoot was really talented, working with her was an inspiration. I

just gravitate towards very creative minds, I like when someone isn’t afraid to change things or take risks. Can you tell right away if they are going to be good or is there some quality or clue that helps you figure out “this is the person I want to shoot with?” There are definitely certain things that will make you want to work with one photographer over another. It really all comes down to experience and style. Mainly, as a model, you judge a photographers experience by the work they have already done, just as a model is judged the same way. What was one of your most memorable shoots and why? I find something from every photo shoot worth holding on to, a great shot or a professional criticism there is always something to be gained from the experience. However on one of my shoot I met a dancer who had worked with Madonna, so that Photo: Cesar Cuevas was it for me really. But everything that day went so perfectly, like clockwork. I met a very unique and talented designer. The photographer was extremely talented and the shot I added to my portfolio was amazing. That is always the best feeling. You can’t always tell what your image looks like from an outsiders pov, but when you get an amazing picture and you know all the work you put into making it happen, there’s no better feeling in the world than that. How were you found for ‘Make Me A Supermodel 2? I found a post online for the show’s casting, but I didn’t know it was MMAS at the time. I didn’t have to go through the open casting call process which made me extremely happy. If you’ve ever been to one for a tv show you know what I’m talking about. I was interviewed the day a5er I sent in a link to my pictures online. I was so happy that something really exciting was about to happen in my life.

Clearly, modeling is full of diversity in all forms. But being a model who embraces androgyny seemed to hurt you on the show. Do you believe that there are two modeling worlds? Mainstream and the real, with different sets of rules? Yes, completely. There are different levels of modeling as there are in fashion. For me, high fashion is at the top. I plan to work with designers like Prada, Vivienne Westwood, Burberry, Gucci, that’s just where I feel I fit into this industry because I appreciate the beauty and hard work that goes into this delicate form of art. There’s no doubt that markets in the US have more casual directions than in Europe or Asia. As far as embracing androgyny, it’s not something I ever really thought about. My look was just how I felt I wanted to express myself to others. Even now I am still the Photo: Gregory Kim same, just a little bit more educated. I have always been about breaking the mold and blurring the lines. Life seems more exciting that way. Agyness Deyn is a great inspiration to me, anyone who can become successful by being different is a lot smarter than you might think. Those are the kind of people I feel like I can identify with. I think that at the time of my elimination, some of the judges on the show just weren’t ready for my look. Jenny Shimizu sees the potential I have. Having someone like her on my side, who’s look is reliant on both masculine and feminine, made all the difference to me of how things turned out. I didn’t gain any knowledge from Perou that I felt I could learn from, and really didn’t acknowledge his criticism because I felt like it was bias. I know I still have things to learn to become better; you never really get away from that in life if you’re constantly challenging yourself. Exercise, School, The Arts, Music? What other interests do you have a passion for? Ha. That pretty much nails it. I am a vast admirer of the arts and beauty. But I also have grown quite passionate about food. I sometimes watch cooking shows all day long just

to get ideas about something new I can create. It’s so much fun working in the kitchen and creating things for others to enjoy, as long as it’s healthy! What advice do you have for today’s aspiring models today? They had better be willing to work! In the very beginning, I had to do everything myself. Networking, building a portfolio, setting up shoots, hair… People o5en think that being a model is easy and they don’t do anything or know anything. But you can’t imagine how much work it is to be successful in this industry. Especially in runway modeling, there are a million thoughts in your head right before you hit that catwalk and it’s nearly impossible to focus on any one. Every pose, expressions of your face, the lighting, your steps, what your selling to the audience, it’s incredible. I would also advise not being afraid to be different. My look was formed by the decisions of myself, not what other people might have said I should do. But that’s what makes you unique as a person. If you let others form who you are, then eventually you won’t recognize yourself. Definitely keep any advice in mind from people you feel have the experience you don’t yet have. When there are a million blondes and million brunettes in the world, you need to stand out among them to be recognized. Don’t ever be afraid to do that. You really need to have an incredible amount of confidence as well. I thought I was confident before this experience, but being in a competition like this made me realize even how much further I can go. Do you have a preference between editorial fashion, beauty, or advertising? I really enjoy working in many aspects of modeling. But feel as though I prefer editorial and runway modeling. Those are the most exciting to me. I just try to focus on the moment and what is needed of me at the time, I am a model a5er all, tell me what you want me to be. I want to keep myself constantly working in an environment where I am learning, entertained and that I enjoy being apart of. If you were not a model, what would you be? If I wasn’t a model, I’d love to be working with animals. I would probably be one of those crazy people you see on the discovery channel chasing around exotic animals. It’s interesting to me that there is so many species alive today that we don’t even know about yet. I have always wanted to learn about archeology also, and even go onsite and dig up a part of history. How exciting would that be?

Simply RED Arianna

G

entlemen may use

a variety of words to describe Arianna. Perhaps they would say that she is lovely, or pretty or she looks like she has a great personality. But ask Arianna. There is only one word that she uses to describe herself and thats "Passionate"! More than anything, Arianna says she posses "Passion". She is driven, dedicated, and hardworking. Her dream of being a model is what drives her. Her motto is to be relentless and never giving up. Even if a door is closed to her, she will do any and everything in her power to get through! She says wont quit, until she’s a STAR! These are pretty important qualities in modeling. She’s off to a good start.

Arianna’s heritage is French, British, and Scottish, which does give her a unique look. She is so proud of being a natural redhead and wants to be the first redheaded Victoria Secrets Angel. Every step she as taken is to

bring her closer to her dream. Currently, she’s living in Salt Lake City, Utah where she works as a receptionist for a local TV channel called Partime. Arianna works consistently as a promotional model and has worked in Las Vegas, LA, Orlando, and Salt Lake City. She also Performs with a local Burlesque troop called the Voodoo Darlings. She has a Passion for the stage, dancing, singing, and stripping down to her Bra and Panties! She also is an aspiring Actress. Working on getting becoming SAG eligible, she has done many mainstream films, and commercials. Arianna has a love for the entertainment industry. Arianna says she is so incredibly thankful for all the opportunities that have come her way. She

back! There were boys and girls in my runway class that were not even remotely attractive or tall! At that moment I knew it was a scam. But then I booked my first modeling job in Vegas for the Matrix hair show! My agency told me that they wouldn’t do anything to my long never been touched natural red hair! But when I got there I signed a model release and they just took over chopped my hair and dyed it purple and orange! The money I received from that show was spent getting my hair back to its old self and

and effortlessly lose herself in the movement of dance. I was rediscovered for modeling when i was about 18 years and it changed my life! I was well on my way to NY for Broadway when i discovered a passion and love for modeling! However my first couple of experiences where horrific. I bought into the scam of paying to be with an agency and classes! I spent over $2,000 to be with my first agency Tru Talent! I went to my first modeling class and realized it was a joke and never went

even to this day it still isn’t the same! So my message never do a hair show in less u want your hair dyed and cut and Never Trust a scam agency! My tragic tale doesn’t end there though. After I left my old agency, I bounced from agency to agency trying to find a non-scam, which is almost impossible to do in a third market state! I then found another agency and went to them with a portfolio. They told me I had a lot of potential but had to shoot with their photographer pay money in order to be in their agency! I bought into it again. So i showed up for my photo shoot thinking it was just me, but no it was 5 other models doing 4 different looks that day with one hair and makeup artist for all 6 girls! My photos were a disaster! So I demanded a re-shoot and they just offered me the same thing which was the problem! I demanded my money back and they wouldn’t do it! They never sent me on audition, SCAM! So now I’m currently with the number one agency in Utah McCarty Talent Agecny, I have never had to pay a cent to be with them. I Justin Grant Photography have a non-exclusive contract with them which is great because I book and find most of my jobs myself! I find that in Utah i have to sell myself and talent in order to do it consistently! I have booked many modeling jobs in Las Vegas,

Orlando, and LA! Mostly Promotional work but a few calendars, catalogs and lookbooks. I have shot for Pin-up for Pups which all compensation for the calendar is donated to the rescue and survival of abandoned and abused dogs. I have also been featured in "A" magazine which is a french fetish magazine! And was most recently was on the cover and featured in a lookbook for a local book company about shapes and curves of a woman’s body! I have also been put up for a Corona Beer campaign/billard. Other credits include local features in the newspaper and other advertisements! My most recent being an editorial Print model for Flithy Gorgeous who was a designer on Project runway season 3 from Utah! The fashions and photos were featured at Sundance this year 2009! Working for hours every day on getting just a little closer to her dream none of this would be possible without the love and support of her family. Continously facing hardships in every aspect of her life she has never stopped believing. Making her humble, greatful, positive, down to earth, and caring. Arianna strives to inspire others to reach their dreams and goals! She can only hope that she has touched and motivated struggling entertainers to just go for it and never look back! Not only does she have a passion for modeling but she has great passion for fashion. No matter what negativity comes her way she always finds a way to look good. Advising and help others look good she has a great eye for what looks good on any body. She would describe her look as sexy -classy. Her motto, "its always a fashion show no matter where you go, so why not always look good"! Arianna is hoping that this feature of her will get her great exposure in the modeling industry. She is waiting for someone to discover her and she that she not only has the looks but all the personality and passion to make it big. She says, its about time we get Redheads noticed for the beauties that we are!!

always outdoors, climbing trees, playing in ponds, etc.” “North Dakota is pretty slow-paced”, she says. Aside from all the outdoors loves she grew up with there, Brita knew that she had to leave. She didn't start modeling there because there were never opportunities but she always secretly wanted to. Brita went to college at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities where she studied Psychology and minored in Women's studies and French. And like modeling at a high level, riding horses and playing around in ponds, Brita is an understated kind of girl. She thinks less is more. So for example, we had a hard time finding out that she graduated with Honors and Summa Cum Laude from the University of Minnesota. She just figured it wasn’t all the important. Neil Sharum Photography

After graduating, she immediately moved to CA, not for modeling but solely for the

really boring but Brita love it and really misses doing it. “You get to give design feedback and really learn the technical aspects of the production of clothing. It’s cool.”

Viakario Photography

She worked mostly on a local basis - no real major campaigns at that point. She did a lot of lookbooks for designers, stores, some

weather. Brita didn't have a job lined up or any contacts to speak of. She just headed off in the direction of CA and ended up there. She caught a few eyes and started working for a fashion company and soon they asked her o model for them. Brita actually started working as a fit model. She says “Most people don't understand what this means but it is basically being a human mannequin. And it’s not as easy as it sounds - you need to have 'perfect' measurements and maintain them at all times.” Many models find Enrique Vega Photography this type of work to be

commercials, a bit of television work, etc. And she did do a big campaign for Nikon, and has been in several magazines, including national & international publications. Currently, Brita is represented by The Industry Group for commercial and print modeling. They are a small, boutique style agency in LA with a great roster and a NY feel. For runway, she with Next models LA. On a personal note, Brita absolutely love to travel! She says “my first international trip was to India at the age of 13. It was life changing and ever since I’ve known that I would eventually work in humanitarian efforts. I’ve also Brita been to England, France Spain, Morocco, Madagascar, Mauritius, and La Reunion. My favorite place thus far has been Madagascar. There they have the kindest people and the most unique landscapes. There isn't a place I won't travel to and I hope that soon I will be modeling internationally to take advantage of the travel and experiences all over the world.

From a health perspective, Brita says she has been a strict vegetarian ever since her trip to India. She doesn’t diet but is very health conscious and enjoys eating a nutritious diet. She has also practiced yoga for 10 years and does Pilates often to stay toned. At the moment, Brita lives in LA but is traveling to NYC and hopefully internationally very soon. She says she loves modeling for so many reasons; the he art of it, the collaboration, the expression. “I can really let go when I model”, she says. She’s also a very determined person. When she’s finished modeling, Brita plans to go back to school to either get her master's or PhD in International Public health. She’d specifically like to work with refugee and international disaster relief situations. Brita says about modeling, “well, I'm strange when it comes to modeling (and probably not a very good model in this aspect). I am pretty modest and real. There will never be a diva in me. I get my nails done maybe twice a year and it’s usually when somebody forces me to do it or it’s needed for a shoot. I should get better about that actually. I didn't even own make-up or heels until I started modeling. In fact, I had no idea how to even shop for heels at first! Now, I do have a bit of a shoe fetish...But I still don't care for make-up though and don't even own a curling iron. We think Brita doesn’t need a curling iron to be a top model. She just needs to bring herself.

“My nationality is British. I was born and bought up in London and I love London. I t is a beautiful city with diverse cultures. But the weather ‘sucks’. My parents are from Bangladesh. I have been there a few times. It’s hot and beautiful. But I did find the culture a bit shocking. For example, if your a woman you can’t smoke in public. It’s considered degrading. Growing up I was always treated like an ugly duckling. I was too tall too skinny and to dark to be considered attractive. Although I never really cared about what anyone said. I just dealt with it. Someone at school told me that I should model when I was about 14. At the time, I thought ‘no way’ because in the South Photographer Daniel Jackson modelventure.com

Asian community modeling is all about Miss World beauty pageants and Bollywood movies. I didn’t look like a beauty queen. When I was about 19, I entered a modeling competition with a London based agency called Independent Model Management. I got Photographer Tony Wellington through to the finals and met designer Mathew Williamson. Since then, I ‘ve been hooked on fashion. I hated school. I was a bit of a rebel and was Photographer Tony Wellington hardly ever there, but things changed when I turned 18 and I wanted to go to university. I thought, ‘if I am studying it will stop my parents pressuring me to get married’ . My university life was all about having fun. I studied computer science and, don’t get me wrong, I love technology, especially the internet. I am fascinated by web development. But my time at university was more about making lots of friends and going out all the time partying. I think I over did it because now I don’t even like clubs. I would rather sit at home and read a book! For a 22 year old model, that sort of proves that I got my partying in and am done with it. I just got into fitness. I love working out. I love reading, usually computing books. I love music. I went on a holiday once and forgot my IPod. I actually felt naked with no music. About modeling, I modeled briefly when I was at university I did a H&M campaign for UK stores. My favorite place to be is the catwalk. The adrenaline rush is so exciting! Now that I have finished studying and am with Elite, I want to take it more seriously. I’ve lived me life my way so far. I do want to be a top model and my ambition is to live in New York one day, work as a model and still continue to do projects with computing.” MySpace: www.myspace.com/parvinchoudhury email: parvinch@hotmail.com

Itaysha Jordan

Mostofizadeh grew up in a small town in northern California. Living up to the “California girl” persona, she likes spending all of her free time outdoors. “I enjoy playing sports, especially basketball, soccer and tennis. I am also a long distance runner and enjoy running at every opportunity!” Her mother, of Swedish decent, graced the cover of many magazines as a top model in the 70’s and 80’s. Her father, born in Iran, was the owner of a fine men’s clothier company in which he shared his love of high fashion with her. Inspired by both her mother and father, she knew her calling at a very young age. Heather’s first encounter with modeling came at the ripe young age of two months old! She appeared in the Christmas edition of a Macy’s Catalogue donning a reindeer onesy. However, it wasn’t until several years later that she truly rose onto the modeling scene. Fresh faced and ready to start her career, she walked into a top LA based modeling agency, with only a few Polaroid’s in hand, and was signed on-the-spot. After appearing in several shows at LA/ Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, she was discovered by a Paris based agent while having lunch with friends Benjamin Rosenberg at the Bonaventure

hotel. “Within a few weeks, I found myself packing my bags and heading to Paris with high hopes of success.” Following in the footsteps of her mother, her first job while in Paris was an 8 page spread in a top French magazine. Shooting on location in Casablanca, Morocco, she graced the pages wearing Eres, Marc Jacobs and Prada. Her next big job landed her in Normandy, France for a Manoush campaign. With renowned photographer Felix Larher snapping the pics and the editor in chief of French Cosmopolitan magazine by his side, “I knew then, that my career was headed in the right direction.” With her portfolio becoming stronger and her confidence on the rise, her next stint made for an unforgettable experience. “I found myself in the office of one of my favorite designers, Jean Louis Scherer, at a casting for their fall collection. After being fitted and photographed, I received a call from my agent that I had booked the job and would debut the line. I was elated to hear that I was going to work side by side with the designer I had dreamed would one day design my wedding dress.” After several months in Paris, it was back to California once again to hit the runways of LA Fashion Week. Over the course of the following season, Heather would land jobs for Ed Hardy, Joe’s Jeans, Stitch’s Jeans, LA Times, Jaded by Knight, and a national Pepsi commercial…just to name a few. With her career on the rise, her agents thought it best for her to explore the New York market. Having signed with Boss Model Mgmt., she was off to the big apple to make her mark. While hitting the scene in New York, she has been working for top clients like Sean John, Thomas Pink, Shelly Steffee, and trotting the runways during NY Fashion Week. Heather is currently jet-setting between New York, Paris and Milan, with continued aspirations to work with more of her favorite designers. When it comes to her own style, Heather loves to feel feminine in dresses and high heels. “I dream of working for my favorite designers such as Balenciaga, Chanel, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Prada. Height: 5'10" Their designs Bust: 34 influence my Waist: 24 Hips: 34 fashion sense Hair: brown and everyday Eyes: green style!” Look out for this California girl, we think she’s on her way to becoming a successful model! Discoveries of

Matrix Proportions

New models are signed everyday.

The challenge is that few make it big. So when success stories happen, we need to take note. The question is not “was she pretty enough?” because being beautiful is only one component of making it in modeling. The real question is “was she/he prepared”?

Matrix Model Management has been responsible for the discovery of these new models for ’07, who have all been signed to top agencies: Lauren - Ford NY Jennifer - Red Thailand Danny - Elite Atlanta

What do these models all have in common? They were supported, coached and/or walked in by our company, Matrix Model Management (www.matrixmodelsny.com), the same company that publishes this magazine. They understood that gaining insight and knowledge about how to best approach their goal was important; and that the best way to

go about becoming a real model was to talk with one. We will be featuring them and other models we’ve signed with agencies in coming issues. Their stories will be familiar to you. They are regular people who took the initiative to make it happen; and had the wisdom to ask for help.
