The well known housing expert, television presenter Phil Spencer recently wrote an article in the Daily Telegraph on how to add value to your home.
“If you are going to improve one room, make it the kitchen, this has now become the showpiece of the home. We don’t just cook in it, we do homework in it, we watch television in it and hold dinner parties there.”He proclaims, and how right he is. The kitchen really has become the place where the buzz happens in many homes and it’s extremely understandable why. Long gone are the rooms that were purely seen as practical places to prepare food. They really have become the heart of the house. The evidence is there, even though we eat out more regularly than we did and spend less time preparing food compared to years ago, kitchens are still the heart of the home according to a National Home Improvement survey this. Further statics show we now spend 39 minutes preparing food compared to 100 minutes in the 1960s, but if the kitchen is classed as the hub, it only means we use it as a place to socialise and communicate with our families and friends, which you could argue is equally important as slaving over a hot stove. Given the incredible evolution in kitchen design and how practical, yet incredibly stylish they have become, it really isn’t surprising that even though we cook in them less, that we still spend time in them. From traditional oak kitchen units to ultra high gloss modern kitchen units, revamping your kitchen can really make such a huge difference and if you’ve been thinking about making that change, not only will you add value to your house, you can make a real difference to the feel of your home. With so much choice, you can make the design your own too. Interestingly you might find your friends have opted for similar kitchen units, however, simply with a different worktop or handle you end up with a completely different kitchen altogether, which suits your own tastes and means your fitted kitchen will be completely different to anyone else's. There are probably mountains of studies that show why psychologically we are drawn to the kitchen, but ask your average man on the street and they probably couldn’t put it into words. It’s difficult to put your finger on why a new fitted kitchen can make such a difference, but if there ever was proof that the kitchen has a knack of drawing you in and making you want to spend time there, then you only have to make your way to the nearest kitchen in your neighbourhood. For some reason, everyone resonates to a kitchen at a party.
So there you have it, we don’t know why, but even if we do less things in our kitchen we still love them and want to spend time in them and when you get a new one, the feeling can be even more amazing. There is perhaps only one question left. When are they going to integrate beds into fitted kitchens, then that really would mean you’d spend the majority of your time there.
