Two-seater sofa model FJ 45 designed by Finn Juhl for Niels Vodder, Denmark, 1945.

Teak, upholstery and leather. Stamped.

Finn Juhl’s two-seater sofa model FJ 45 broke boundaries in the development of twentiethcentury furniture design. The space between the frame and the seat creates an impressive sense of lightness. This is increased by the delicately formed armrests. Finn Juhl formed a division between the supported and the supporting elements of the sofa, making it a truly remarkable Nordic design collectable.

Easy chair designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen for Christensen & Larsen Cabinetmakers, Denmark. 1949.

Maple, Brazilian rosewood with horsehair fabric.

The very rare and expensively produced desk “FJ 50” by Finn Juhl from the 1960s is of the highest quality, with diagonal stretchers underneath the desk’s surface. This model is often referred to as “the floating top” work table. Exquisitely carved side aprons connect the table’s rounded legs for additional balance, adding another expensive detail to the design. The desk is sculptural, yet its base is composed of solid Brazilian rosewood, making it very stable.

Brazilian rosewood is one of the most exclusive woods used in furniture making; its colour and grain structure are remarkable. The pattern created by the book matched veneer on the desk’s surface is exceptional.

The architect Finn Juhl was the most sculptural of the Danish masters. He worked with different, often larger manufacturers, but his finest collaborations were with his friend Niels Vodder, one of the most skilled cabinet makers in Denmark at the time.

A set of six ‘Egyptian’ dining chairs designed by Finn Juhl for Niels Vodder, Denmark, 1949. Rosewood and leather. Stamped.

PAD
DESIGN

Occasional table “The Egyptian table”, designed by Mogens Lassen for Rud Rasmussen, Denmark. 1935.

Mahogany, foldable frame and top with raised edge, brass fittings.

With this occasional table model, Mogens Lassen created an icon of Scandinavian design. Based on an ancient Egyptian model, the elegant mahogany table folds flat for versatility. This is the rare large version from 1935 and an early production model — it has brass details on the folding legs and end caps on the runners. The elegant lip to the surface resembles a tray. The maker, Rud Rasmussen in Copenhagen, was the leading wooden furniture manufacturer of the time.

The root veneer on the outside and inside of this cabinet by Josef Frank is exceptional. With its boxy, rectangular aesthetic, the body elegantly rests on four sturdy legs. Two doors reveal ample storage, and a practical pull out surface offers multipurpose use. A discrete key elegantly locks away the interior.

“Model 2135” was made in two versions—one with this striking root veneer and the other with simple mahogany doors. Simplicity and exceptional quality make this piece a timeless Svenskt Tenn collectible.

The curved, voluptuous armrests of this extremely comfortable chair are remarkable. They soften the otherwise boxy shape. Viggo S. Jörgensen and Hans Christian Hansen designed this model for the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition at Designmuseum Danmark in 1935.

The chair’s back legs offer strong support by kicking out for extra balance. Generous upholstery provides excellent comfort—the cognac leather has a beautiful heavy grain and is secured with elegant brass studs.

Table lamp model 2468 designed by Josef Frank for Svenskt Tenn, Sweden. 1950s. Brass with cotton shades. Stamped.

Ceiling lamp designed by Paavo Tynell for Taito Oy, Finland, 1940s.

Brass with slatted wood shades.

PAD ART & DESIGN

Paavo Tynell (1890 – 1973) is one of the most important 20th-century lighting designers. He was a trained sheet metal worker – a unique background that influenced his recognisable aesthetic. The company Taito Oy was founded by Tynell himself because other manufacturers considered his creations too complex for production.

The stylised, star-shaped brass wire element on the stem of this very rare ceiling lamp from the 1940s is typical for Paavo Tynell. It offers a decorative contrast to the cylindrical, slatted wood shades, which are equally distinctive. For these, he used traditional window blinds that protect the eye from the eight light sources. When the lamp is lit, they achieve a decorative shadow effect on the surrounding walls. Combining different materials, such as natural wood and elegant brass, was typical for Finnish design at the time.

Ceiling lamps model ’10166’ designed by Paavo Tynell for Taito OY, Finland, 1950.

Brass and frosted glass. Stamped.

Hundreds of small perforations are stencilled into the shade by hand so that when the lamp is lit, a remarkable pattern appears on the surrounding walls and ceiling, like stars in the sky. Model “10166” has an ingenious pulley system with an inbuilt counterbalance to adjust the height of the beautiful shade. The stylised, spiral flower at the top of the lamp is typical for Tynell: it is decorative while also holding the wires in place.

Textiles

Exhibiting Barbro Nilsson of Märte Måås-Fjetterström

Arguably Sweden’s top textile artist, Nilsson was hired to manage the renowned Märta Måås-Fjetterström weaving studio in Båstad in 1942, where she would remain for the next 30 years. She was greatly inspired by nature, finding success and worldwide recognition for a great deal of her designs. Many of these are displayed in the National Museum of Sweden.

Rug ‘Salerno Green’ designed by Barbro Nilsson for MMF, Sweden. 1948.

Wool. Signed. Rölakan technique.

This rug, designed in 1948, belongs to Barbro Nilsson’s renowned collection of ‘Salerno’ textiles that she designed at the request of a very special commission. In 1947, a freight plane carrying twenty-five Swedish Air Force pilots crashed near Scala, a small town north of the ancient city of Salerno in Italy’s Monti Latteri region. Despite the heroic efforts of Italian locals, only four of the pilots survived. The Swedish Government commissioned the MMF workshop to design a commemorative rug that would also be sent as a gift to the chapel of the hospital in Scala where the survivors were cared for.

This example was woven in 1952 using green wool with hints of brown at the borders and neat fringe tassels completing each of the rug’s shorter sides. Flecks of brown, blue and yellow can be seen in the vertical pattern details of the rug. These coloured flecks represent – albeit abstractly –small airplanes and the triangular sections are symbolic of the mountains of Italy’s countryside. These motifs combined with the tranquil composition of the rug turns this national tragedy into something beautifully poignant.
