Throughout history, the term “bastard” tends to crop up when something of perceived value is at stake. It could take the shape of a family reputation, a vast fortune or the path to a throne perhaps. Yet the bastard children tend to survive and often thrive through the denial of their legitimacy. They tend to be able to use the remaining resources available to them to achieve their individual destinies despite or in spite of their earlier rejections. Some notable examples in history include Leonard DaVinci and Steve Jobs. Because the term “bastard” tends to evoke the sensations of an aggressive rejection and a social ridicule, those in polite society began to refer to these children as “Natural” children. In more recent times, a bastard may also come to be known as a “Love” child. Both these terms try to transform what appears to be unfortunate to what is fortunate. The terms attempt to counter the situation yet can never truly hide it. Despite all this however, there are underlying truths within these names.

DIY Art, whereby these artists would produce work within limited means. Often unconstrained by Art theory, education or established aesthetics they would produce works that provided a counterculture agent to Pop or would champion subculture instead. They would reject the high production values associated with Neo Pop and work with found materials. There is often disarming honesty and pleasure that is apparent in the making of these works. This helps to set them apart from many of the current conversations in art. This earnestness and natural way of working provides us all with an alternative vision of what Pop Art is. It retains humility and an ability to laugh at itself and its history. 3 by keh ng modern language experiment

The “Bastard Children of Pop” are often unrecognised by the broader Fine Art family, yet continue to practice despite their lack of legitimacy. Aaron Rose of the Alleged Gallery in NYC termed it - the bastard children of pop -

Newfies and some other giant breeds such as my Leonberger (distantly related to the Newfie) often don’t walk like smaller dogs. They do have a different gait. Leonbergers were originally bred to look like lions and under certain conditions they can do so. I had many people comment that my dog looked like a lion (Leos get a big mane when they are mature). I am pretty sure that the photo is a Newfie and nothing more sinister than that. I suspect that this student had never met a Newfie in person or indeed any other giant hairy dog in her life. 25/5/2012 03:35

Dog trainer girl,Vancouver Island (via Devon UK) Nah, I’m not convinced this is a picture of the dog. The fur on the unknown looks very short in relation to the fur on the Newfoundland dog. The size looks a little off as well. The unknown does look much broader than the dog. 25/5/2012 00:11

People normally do a double take when Im walking my Newfie Betty (named after the Queen)....she’s 8 stone and can reach my shoulders on her hind legs which is about 5ft.....soft as putty and scared of everything, she doesnt really how big she is and doesnt understand all the fuss she gets - but she loves the fuss nonetheless! 24/5/2012 22:49

Huge dog lover, Devon I have 2 Newfoundland dogs myself and many people comment on their large size and often people are quite scared of them especially when they bark, but really they are just big soft balls of fluff that spend a lot of the day sleeping. Amy, London Most people walking in the country dont hold camaras (or phones) at the ready in case of the split second sighting of an animal. Maybe that is why there is little photographic evidence. Also, regular walkers see bones all the time and think nothing of it. Also, when professional and/or highly trained volunteers see something out of the ordinary I am tempted to believe them. Also, when you have witnessed more than one dog become frozen with fear, run back to you, hide behind you and even refuse to go further along the path/woodland/moor, then maybe, just maybe there are things out there we do not know about. Oh and just think about how hard it is to explore every inch of any countryside for an animal who wants to stay away from human contact. 24/5/2012 22:06

www.havenbridge.net 30 years ago witnesses reported what they referred to as a beast in the marshes of the London Borough of Hackney. Area residents were so distraught that it sparked a full blown search by authorities who suspected there was a bear on the loose in the area. Now a new report has surfaced bringing back memories of the beast. university student Helen Murray was out for a walk near the Old River Lea when she saw a shaggy black animal that she says was bigger than a human. At first she thought it might be dead but when it moved she took a couple of photos with her cell phone and then ran in terror. Here’s the report from London 24:

the beast of hackney marshes’ mystery A strange creature has been captured on camera on Hackney Marshes – 30 years after the unexplained sighting of another mystery beast sparked a full-scale search for a suspected bear on the loose.Terrified university student Helen Murray said she took the snaps while out for a stroll near dense woodland close to a path near the Old River Lea on bank holiday Monday earlier this month. She said she was stopped in her tracks by the unknown animal, which was larger than a person and covered in shaggy black fur. “I tried to stay calm as I wasn’t sure what kind of animal it was or if it was even alive,” she said. “I had my phone ready to call 999. Then the creature moved. Somehow I managed to take a couple of pictures before I ran. “I managed to get away but was scared half to death.” Ms Murray says she didn’t contact the police because she thought they wouldn’t believe her. A spokeswoman for Hackney police said there have been no other reports of sightings, while experts at London Zoo said the pictures were not clear enough for them to comment. The photographs have revived memories of the unexplained case of a bear reportedly sighted on the Marshes in 1981 – 50 police officers, army marksmen, and a helicopter were drafted in to search the area, but the - the bastard children of pop -

beast was never found. Officers at the time stressed the people who’d seen the animal were not hoaxers, although they admitted they could have been victims of a hoax. Two bear carcasses had previously been found nearby in the River Lea and it remains a mystery how they got there. I tried my best to blow up and manipulate the pictures but with little success as you can see above. Is it a bear, dog or something more crypto-like? The best I can do is leave it up to the readers to decide. Thanks to London24.com for their spin on the Hackney Mystery Beast.

Why not? Griffins were sighted in Brentford, west London, in 1984.

58

What is quite strange, though, is that Brentford is obsessed with griffins. Brentford FC’s football stadium is called Griffin Park. There is a pub called The Griffin. Griffin symbology is situated around the town. But, in 1984, several people did report seeing a REAL griffin in Brentford. I t was a strange flying “thing” decribed as a winged dog or large bir- like creature. It seemed to match the description of the classical griffin, a flying lion with an eagle’s head.King Charles II gave his mistress Nell Gwyn, a resident of Brentford, a griffin as a gift. One day the unfortunate creature fell into the River Brent and was swept away into the Thames. The griffin, assumed drowned, was actually found alive on the banks of Brentford Eyot, where it continued to live undisturbed. Maybe it was the griffin that was seen in 1984, still alive after all these years. What is strange about the photo of the Beast of Hackney Marshes in north east London is that it looks like a grizzly bear and, back in the 1990s, there was an episode of the TV series The Detectives called “The Beast of Hackney Marshes” in which a grizzly bear escapes onto Hackney Marshes. 20 May 2012 05:49 PM

Still, doesn’t mean that this more recent sighting is true; My guess is that whoever created the hoax read an article about the old sightings, then decided to “bring back the legend” for the 30th anniversary of the original sighting. 22 May 2012 02:58 PM

Richard Somebody via Facebook My first thought was Newfoundland, second was wild boar. I doubt the UK has any Sasquatch since they are isolated by water. So unless someone smuggled in a breeding population let’s just put that one to rest. I actually hope it’s a Newfie, because I’ve seen the damage boars and hogs can do to their living environs. If Crgintex is correct about it being a Russian boar I hope someone traps it quickly and gets it out of the area so it doesn’t reproduce. May 24th, 2012 10:42 pm

Without a clearly defined shape, it is really impossible to tell. If the first photo shows the creature’s hindquarter, as it appears, it would rule out a dog. Shape of the back is wrong for a dog, and no tail. The second photo is even worse. I can’t tell if I am looking at a shoulder or a head. I don’t know if there are any bears or wild hogs in the UK, but my guess would be a black boar pig. May 24th, 2012 10:47 pm

Desertdweller the only reason I was going to say “dog” was because the front and rear seam to be “level”. Usually the dogs that have a sloping back have been bred for that. I’m not sure if boars slope or not, but most other herbivores that size with hair (to my recollection)slope some. Also, the fur is consistent with most wolf hounds. May 24th, 2012 11:05 pm

Jocko Wainwright This is an odd one because firstly, I was walking in my local woods the other day and saw a Newfoundland dog with it’s owners, and thought at the time that if you saw it without people, you’d think it was a bear or something – it was huge, and hairy, and shuffled about, very undoglike... In fact, it looked exactly the same as these photos show. ...Secondly, I went to college with that guy from Kula Shaker who says he owns that dog. mijbil9 It doesn’t look like a dog to me, newfie or otherwise. In the third picture down particularly, the head carriage on the shoulders and the broadness of the shoulders does not look canine. I have worked professionally with dogs, so while I would not hold myself up as an expert, I like to think I can tell what’s a dog and what isn’t. I got it. Its an amusing picture of a thing that has been photographed in a way to apparently conceal what it actually is! Behold–The new and improved blobsquatch! With new smart camera technology its getting harder and harder to create out-of-focus blurry images of creatures that grunt in the night.Today’s audience of believers need a clearer image to work their imaginations. The new and improved bobsquatch image lacks the fuzzy shadow and obscure profile that frustrated millions. Now when your friends conclude “its just a shadow” or “its a blotch on the lens” you can say “ahh...but look, you can see details. It could be a squatch”I propose a new catagory to match this emerging trend in photography. Clearly with the sharper imaging of today’s cameras “blob” should be removed from the term blobsquatch. I propose we replace blob with “diddly” in such cases. Now when someone takes a picture of an object at apparent close range that still imparts no information about whether it has a head, tail, feet, legs or any other anatomical feature of earthly animate objects, we have a name for it–its diddly squatch. There’s an update on this one! A man named Paul Winter-Hart, who apparently was the drummer of a ‘90s pop group, and his wife Nicole, identified the ‘beast’ as their very large Newfoundland dog, Willow, who’s also a very large, shaggy, black furred creature who hangs about in those woods. (The dog, not the drummer.) http://www.hackneygazette.co.uk /news/beast_of_hackney_marshes_has_ kula_shaker_drummer_solved_the_mystery_1_1389110 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2149370/Beast-Hackney-Marshesrevealed- huge-Newfoundland-dog-owned-drummer-90s-band-Kula-Shaker.html?ito=feeds-newsxml The Daily Mail’s headline for this one somehow comes accross as charming, which is a shocker as to date the Mail have very rarely come accross as anything other than ignorant, dishonest and paranoid! 30 May 2012 12:45 PM

C.McArthur I note the witness thinks it isn’t the dog, but it looks pretty likely to me that it was. I guess she is either too embarresed to admit it was a dog, or is desperate to believe it is a cryptid. 31 May 2012 03:24 AM

Mr R Thanks for the pics C. McArthur, that’s what I also thought that the article photos appeared to be the hind-end of a large dog romping through the woods and jumping over a log. I think the idea that it’s the ‘front’ was part of the hoax. 31 May 2012 07:55 AM

www.naturalplane.blogspot.co.uk just the facts?: beast of hackney marshes www.reddit.com the ‘beast of hackney marshes’ mystery - pictures - quirky london Bollocks there’s no beast, probably just one of the pikeys that set up camp on the corner of the Marsh some years ago.Fun fact, the council actually gave them that area in return for them moving from the underpass as the area was undergoing redevelopment. Since then they actually expanded into a much larger area on the side of the road, which they’ve since been moved from and pushed back into their little shit hole due to the Olympics clean up. Unfortunately they can’t get rid of them entirely as it was part of the agreement years ago. 23 days ago

Terrified university student Helen Murray said she took the snaps while out for a stroll near dense woodland close to a path near the Old River Lea on bank holiday Monday earlier this month. She said she was stopped in her tracks by the unknown animal, which was larger than a person and covered in shaggy black fur. May 18, 2012 9:03 am
