DESCRIBE YOUR ART IN ONE PLAYFUL WORD Evocative. IF YOU COULD PAINT WITH AN ARTIST FROM THE PAST; SOMEONE WHO HAS INSPIRED YOU – WHO WOULD IT BE? Caravaggio. I have always loved his sense of light and how he used chiaroscuro to create bold contrast in his paintings. Even in the darkest shadows there is always detail and life. This use of light has and is borrowed a lot in cinema like in Stanley Kubrick films and by photographers like Irving Penn and Annie Leibovitz. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR YOUNGER, CREATIVE SELF? Keep shooting what truly interests you no matter what people think or what’s on trend. If you fill it with passion, it’ll come through in the piece and you’ll capture an audience of sorts. HOW DOES YOUR CREATIVE MIND RECHARGE? Travel. Adventure is around the corner anywhere, especially if you’ve never been there or it’s been a while. Also, meeting interesting people and being part of an experience or special moment in time. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE? I don’t have one favourite but this is right up there: “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” (Pablo Picasso)
18254
WHAT GENRE OF MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO WHEN YOU PAINT? A mix of genres as I love how music takes you somewhere. When I’m shooting, I like to document the actual scene and take in all sounds, dialogue and real life noise. A SIZZLING SUMMER IS HERE
How are you taking advantage of this precious time? by kimberley langen, CEO & co-founder, Spirit of Math
®
Schools
Summer is here, which for most students, means two months of holiday – or more for private schools. That’s 1/6 of the year. What are you going to do with your kids? In North America, many parents believe that it is a time to let kids relax, have fun and generally do what they want. Why not, they say, kids are working hard all year, so they deserve a rest. Do they really deserve a 1/6 of the year rest? Rest, or more accurately, a change is needed, but this does not mean that no learning should happen for such an extended period of time. Studies show that over the summer, students lose up to 20% of what they’ve learned over the school year (Review of Educational Research, H.Cooper.1996) – that’s equivalent to nearly 2 months worth of education. Teachers spend as much as a quarter of the year re-teaching material from the previous grade. These losses are especially evident in math and reading. In addition, other studies have shown that the significant differences in academic
abilities between students happen during the summer. In other words, students may end the school year at the same academic levels, but there is a widening of the levels each year, and much of this happens during the summer holidays. It is thought that what is done during those 2 months makes a significant impact on the students’ academic success. A rest or change of pace is good for the summer, however, learning can still take place – and your child will appreciate it! Keeping your child’s mind challenged over the summer doesn’t need to be a challenge. As little as 20 minutes a day of thought provoking problems can make all the difference and can provide fun quality time with your kids. I wish you all a very happy sizzling summer holiday! Kimberley Langen is the CEO and Co-Founder of Spirit of Math® Schools. For more information about Spirit of Math, and to find a campus near to you, go to www.spiritofmath.com.

ONE TANK TRIPS The 1,000 Islands of excitement, adventure by jay kana | photos by jay kana and 1,000 islands tourism Consisting of 1,864 island spun over a 50 mile radius along St. Lawrence River, The 1000 Islands region was formed over 10,000 years ago during the last ice age, giving way to one of Canada’s most enticing tourist destinations. A quick jaunt east on the 401 will take you to a place filled with adventure, history, excitement, serenity and a camera full of memories. Here’s how I experienced this astounding, must-visit destination:
THOUSAND ISLANDS PLAYHOUSE
“Canada’s Dockside Theatre” kisses the shores of the majestic St. Lawrence River. A community venture created this venue nearly 40 years ago, which was formerly the Gananoque Canoe Club, with the structure in existence since 1909. Founding Artistic Director Greg Wanless spearheaded the creation of the Thousand Islands Playhouse and with an enthusiastic team surrounding him, has given the local community and hundreds of thousands of tourists a gorgeous venue to enjoy entertaining performances. There are two theatres; the 360 seat Springer Theatre and the 140 seat Firehall Theatre. The lobby blends vintage artistry with modern updates, resulting in a warm, historic look and feel before and after

the performances. Shuffle outside and enjoy the panoramic view on their lengthy deck for drinks, snaps and conversation.
1,000 ISLANDS KAYAKING
I absolutely adore kayaking and after a half-day tour with the fine folks at 1,000 Islands Kayaking, this is in my top five kayaking trips. After settling into my buoyant orange chariot, my paddle gently sliced through the St. Lawrence’s tranquil waters, moving from island to island. My guide provided a plethora of information about the local land/waterscape, including a sunken ship to the history of the islands. Sliding into Half Moon Bay on Bostwick Island requires a bit of precision when entering/exiting as its mouth is slightly narrow but absolutely worth it once you see the rock walls. The serenity of the water, splashed with a rich history of the area and knowing it’s only a few hours from home made for a truly memorable experience.
1,000 ISLANDS HELICOPTER TOURS
I’d experienced the area by land and water, so the next approach was by air, courtesy of the team at 1,000 Islands Helicopter Tours.
and fun I was warmly greeted upon arrival (the town has this customer service thing down pat!) and boarded the helicopter for an aerial adventure. Being so high up provides perspective of just how vast and majestic the 1,000 Islands actually is. Interestingly, an “island” is defined by Canadians as land that is one-square metre with two trees.
ARTS & CULTURE
Enjoy four insightful art galleries during your visit to soak in local culture and artists, all within walking distance of each other. As you stroll the main strip, be sure to visit their artsy Sculpture Park, full of work via Canadian artists.
GANONOQUE BOAT CRUISE & BOLDT CASTLE
While my kayaking adventure was a wonderful waterway to adventure, spending nearly 4 hours on the Ganonoque Boat Cruise at sunset lets you truly enjoy the stunning scenery that the 1,000 Islands have to offer. With a choice of three decks to admire the view with, the picture and video opportunities are plentiful as the cruise moves through the islands along the St. Lawrence.
During the tour, there was a stop at the legendary Boldt Castle on Heart Island where I was awestruck at the attention to detail included and its regal size. The castle was started in the early 1900’s by George C. Boldt, (proprietor of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel) to illustrate his love for his wife, Louise via a six storey, 120 room castle. Her sudden passing in 1903 left him heartbroken, work stopped on the structure and sadly, he never returned. Upon returning back to Ganonoque, I witnessed one of the most remarkable sunsets, where it started with a vibrant orange descending into the horizon to a cotton candy pink as the remnants of the sun stirred the sky with soft, red tones before being replaced by a sea of stars. Before you go, visit 1000islandstourism.com to plan your exciting experience.

modern TR AV E L
“We call it the Queen of Lakes,” said Tom Hugh, a local living near Gananoque, describing Charleston Lake. Situated about 330 kilometres east of Mississauga in the Frontenac Arch UNESCO World Biosphere, the 26 km2 lake is also home to Charleston Lake Provincial Park. After our trip here, I understood its royal nickname. It’s truly a regal spot. Our family spent three nights at the provincial park and it was one of our best camping trips yet. Though I have to admit, it wasn’t exactly camping, more like cottaging, since we stayed at Tall Pines, the park’s rustic cabin. Roofed accommodation is a feature of many Ontario’s 330 parks with yurts and other shelters, providing options for campers who prefer a bit more comfort. Our cabin was nothing like we expected in a provincial park. It was secluded, so much so that we accessed it using two of the park’s rental canoes. After a 35-minute scenic paddle, and there was Tall Pines, perched on the rocks overlooking a gorgeous Charleston Lake. Our family doesn’t own a cottage, but if we did, I’d want it to be like this one: simple, wood, large windows with good screens and a westward facing deck with two large Muskoka chairs on it. These wooden seats were just the spot to watch the lake’s incredible sunsets shows display hues of purples and pink so vivid they looked almost fake. With only solar lights and no electricity, it was a pleasant change to see our teens enjoy themselves off the grid: fishing off the deck, swimming, canoeing and making campfires. My daughter brought all of her French tests with her specifically to burn, which she did with relish.
“And this was a grammar test,” she said as she scrunched it up and threw it on the fire. There are plenty of activities both in the park and in the area, and we canoed, hiked and treated ourselves to ice cream treats at Twist’s Outlet, a nearby nostalgic tackle/ sweets/souvenir store. Our last adventure before heading home was at Skywood Eco Adventure, located in Mallorytown about a 20-minute drive away from the park. The smiles never left the kids’ faces as we made our way though a series of zips, along with climbing obstacles through a pine forest and flew above scenic marsh land. I wasn’t smiling though. I gritted my teeth and tried not to scream, though sometimes a high-pitched squeal escaped to the delight of my kids. “Can we come back again?” they asked as we left for Toronto. Yes, but the next time you’re zip lining on your own. I’ll be on a Muskoka chair, watching the sunset on the Queen of Lakes. THE DRIVE On our family’s trip to Charleston Lake Provincial Park, we test drove the Chrysler Pacifica minivan. “Our own captain seats!” was our son’s first reaction to the Pacifica. This was definitely a vehicle designed for family road trips. In the second row of the minivan, both kids had their own separate bucket seats, complete with arm rests and plenty of space between them (which meant no poking or ‘accidental’ elbows). And each of them had their own seat-back screens with head phones, the kind you usually see on planes. My son had his shows loaded on USB, while my daughter had her iPad hooked up with an HDMI cable. The system allowed them to watch their own shows or the same
one. Games, like Sudoku, solitaire and some educational activities, were also on the system, and our kids were actually played checkers with each other. “Are we there yet?” was something we never heard once because the expected arrival time appeared on their screens. Genius. Being a minivan, it was spacious and easily fit all our gear comfortably. I loved how the 3rd row of seats stowed away automatically with the touch of a button. The automatic sliding doors were also a dream for easy loading and unloading. Though a large-sized vehicle, it accelerated nicely and was excellent on gas mileage, thanks to its 3.6L V6 engine; we averaged 8.4L on our trip. (The Pacifica hybrid model is even more impressive with a total driving range of up to 911 km on a full tank and charge.) Other admirable features were the adaptive cruise control, tri-pane panoramic sunroof, blind spot monitoring, an intuitive navigation and entertainment system that easily synced to our phones and automatic parking. Though I must admit that the last feature took some getting used to. My palms were sweaty and heart raced watching the steering wheel move while the car parked itself oh so close to another vehicle. Vented seats, on the other hand, I loved immediately. It was like the first taste of peanut butter pie or the first visit to an airport lounge. Who knew this luxury existed? A touch of the control panel and cool air refreshingly tickled our backs, in the front seats only. “Braggers!” the kids said when we oohed and aahed. Who’s the captain now, eh? the importance of
THE MUNICIPAL ELECTION by jamie dykstra
Municipal elections matter. In fact, they are extremely important to residents of a municipality. 16 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2018
During a municipal election, voters are asked to elect the Mayor, Ward Councillors and School Board Trustees. New to Mississauga this year, voters will also be asked elect the Peel Regional Chair. It’s elected officials who make important decisions on behalf of City residents and businesses. Things like fire and emergency services, public transit, culture and arts programs, museums, parks, green spaces and trails, snow clearing and road maintenance are all managed by the City. The Region of Peel Council, which includes all Mississauga councillors including the Mayor, manages services like water, sewage, garbage and recycling, police and paramedics. These are everyday services that affect every resident. Think about it. It’s Tuesday morning. You wake up and start a pot of coffee using the clean water from your tap. You have a shower and use the washroom. After eating breakfast, you put out the recycling and green bin. After sending the kids off to school safely on the local school bus, you head to work on a MiWay bus. On the way, there was an accident that is being attended to by police, fire and paramedics. Thankfully, everyone is safe. At lunch, you decide to take a stroll through a local park and hiking trail. You finish work and return home on transit. After dinner, you take your kids to the local community centre to play soccer. Sound familiar? That’s just one day. Every day, throughout the entire calendar year, residents of Mississauga rely on municipal and regional services, and the elected officials who oversee them. This is why it’s so important to vote in a municipal election.
Letter. This letter provides voters with all of the info they require to vote. For eligible voters who do not receive the Voter Notification Card – it’s okay, they can still vote by bringing identification that shows their name and address. Who is an eligible voter? Eligible voters must be a Canadian Citizen, 18 years of age or older, and a resident of Mississauga or a non-resident but owns or rents a property in Mississauga. It’s Easy to Vote This year, voters can vote at any voting location within their ward on Election Day. During Advance Polls, voters can vote at any voting location station throughout the entire city. A full list of advance voting locations will be shared in September. What Do Voters Need to Bring to Vote? Voter Notification Card (if received) and a piece of identification that shows the voter’s name and address. That’s all that is needed. For all other information about the upcoming election, visit www.MississaugaVotes.ca.
The 3-1-1 on This Year’s Municipal Election in Mississauga Election Day is Monday, October 22 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters are asked to elect the Mayor, Ward Councillors, School Board Trustees, and new this year, Peel Regional Chair. Voters also have the option of voting during the Advance Polls on October 4 and 5, and October 13 and 14. In September, eligible voters will receive a Voter Notification

Replacing the quirky Juke, the Kicks is sharp looking, agile, spacious and best of all, very affordable, starting at $17,998. Their signature “V-motion” grille, floating roof line and available catchy two-tone roof options (only $150) all make for an attractive package. There are three trim offerings, S, SV, SR and one engine; a 1.6L 4 cylinder motor producing 125 horsepower and 115 lb-ft. of torque. Strengthening those figures is that the Kicks weighs less than 2,700 pounds, increasing the power to weight ratio. Fuel economy ratings of 7.7 L/100km city and 6.6 L/100km highway figures are best in class and 41 L of regular fuel will fill the tank. All Kicks’ are front wheel drive but with a good set of snow tires, you should do well during winter. Responsive steering, impressive handling due to its agility, the Kicks is a breeze to drive and even easier to park, thanks in part to the available around view camera on the SR trim. Infiniti’s 2019 QX50 compact SUV is all-new, with an elegant exterior, upscale interior and impressively fuel efficient. Utilizing stylish and modern design language, the QX50’s beauty is illustrated through both soft and sharp lines blended with a luxurious look and feel. Bathed in LED exterior lights and optional 20” wheels, the exterior redesign is top-notch. The engine is a remarkable feat of engineering, dubbed the “VC-Turbo” (variable compression) it features a 2.0 L turbocharged 4 cylinder motor that’s incredibly efficient due to the aforementioned. The 268 horsepower and 280 lb-ft. of torque are released swiftly and smoothly, resulting in a strong drive quality and brisk acceleration through their mandatory all-wheel drive system. Simply put, you have more power when needed while using less fuel when you don’t. The CVT system is impressively smooth and overall drive feel and quality is quite good. Infiniti has made huge upgrades for on-road impressions versus the outgoing model that’ll surely be noticed. Fuel economy is now 30% better with 10.0 city and 7.8 highway for L/100 km, mostly in part to the VC-Turbo engine. Inside, the standard feature list is extensive, which includes oh-so comfortable heated front seats and steering wheel, Blind Spot Warning, Forward Emergency Braking, Predictive Forward Collision Warning, 8-way power driver and passenger seats, retractable and sliding rear seats and keyless start/stop. Jump to higher trims and enjoy premium leather seats, a vast amount of active safety features including the cutting edge ProPILOT Assist, a 16 speaker Bose audio system, heads-up display and a plethora of other goodies. The interior oozes luxury from every piece of material and design aspect and the cabin has a large, open feel, augmented by the standard panoramic moonroof. The infotainment system still sees dual touch screens; the upper 8” for navigation and lower 7” for infotainment, settings, etc. In addition to form and fashion and fuel-efficiency, the QX50’s functionality is abundant with 1,048 L of cargo space with the seats up and a whopping 1,822 L with the rear seats down. The luxury compact crossover segment has over 20 offerings and with the fully redesigned, upscale QX50, priced from the mid-$40K’s to mid $50K’s over five trim levels, Infiniti has found a formula that should put them in the upper echelon.

thriving + surviving

AS AN ENTREPRENEUR
Here are four crucial lessons I’ve learned over the past 20+ years in hopes that I’m able to help other entrepreneurs thrive and survive on this rollercoaster called entrepreneurism. “NOS” ARE RARELY PERSONAL I’ve been selling for over half my life and initially, I took professional rejection personally, as if the client didn’t like Jay Kana. Realizing that sales decisions are almost always based on fit, finance and time made it easier to move forward opposed to dwelling on the “no.” Simply put - get used to failure; it'll happen a lot. What you learn and retain from it will helps shape the success of your business. Know that almost always, if it’s not currently in the client’s best interest, they’ll say no to anyone asking them. KNOW YOUR MARKET LANDSCAPE Since launching in 2015, the publishing world has changed tremendously. How, when and where people consume information is researched weekly to help keep me moving forward.

by jay kana
With a projected 80% of online content being consumed in via video by 2019, I’ve drastically increased my video content as of mid-2017. Thoroughly understand your demographics and psychographics and research what changes are happening in that world as a spectrum of variables can alter that. Understanding your competition is crucial. What separates you from them? Why do people want your product over theirs? How can you be innovative to increase your audience? BE OPEN TO ASKING FOR HELP I’m fortunate to have incredibly intelligent and honest people surrounding my entrepreneurial journey. They’ve made rough patches smooth and put exclamation points on my successes. I’ve been advised to go east instead of west, even though I thought west was the best way. The problem with staying closed-off is you won’t see the entire landscape and opportunities ahead and having a fully researched decision helps you make
the correct one. Asking for help/advice/guidance is the furthest thing from a “weakness.” Having outside perspectives are critical to keep your ship afloat, in motion and in the right direction. UNDERSTAND FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT I’ve run a lean operation since day one to keep costs and low and cash-flow moving. I didn’t need an office, the latest CRM tools, expensive cards, a huge staff, etc. I needed consistency, quality and an always-in-motion cash flow, which I achieved on a smart, realistic budget and constantly fine-tuned forecasting. Without learning the basics, cash flow will certainly destroy you, regardless of how great your sales/revenue are. Got a million dollars coming in daily? Great! But two million is going out daily. Create your financial plan, then re-do it then re-do again with tweaks, then see the point above. And of course, have an accountant you fully trust.

BOOSTING THE VALUE OF YOUR HOME THROUGH YOUR
BACKYARD When it comes to making home improvements to increase the value of your home, just about everyone is aware that the usual kitchen and bathroom upgrades can make your home more appealing to interested buyers, but did you know that an enjoyable backyard can also help increase the value of your home? When making improvements to your backyard, I believe that the following upgrades can help improve your home's resale value.
DECKS & PATIOS Reports show that approximately 98% of buyers list a deck or patio as one of the qualities they desire in a home, making installing a deck or patio a notable investment. By installing a deck or a patio, you essentially create an exterior room, which instantly expands the living space and attracts potential buyers. OUTDOOR ROOMS One of the greatest ways to instantly enhance your backyard space is to add an outdoor room. In fact, according to real estate reports,
by sam mcdadi
outdoor rooms are more intriguing to buyers than the curb appeal or an open floor plan. Creating an outdoor room can be as easy as adding an outdoor kitchen complete with a cooler or a refrigerator for entertaining. FENCING Fencing can enhance, as well as add privacy to, a new yard construction. There are many types of fencing to select from, including wood fencing, composite fencing, vinyl fencing, metal fencing, chain link fencing, and more. Be sure the fence you select is suitable to your location to ensure a good ROI. FIREPLACES & FIREPITS Your backyard is part of your home, which can significantly add value for yourself as well as potential buyers when it is transformed into a space for creating good family times. A MODERN CL ASSIC by jay kana Having been one of Ontario’s premier farm destinations for 51 years, Chudleigh’s has become a modern classic through hard work, approachability, consistently high quality product offerings and as a way to relax with family and friends. With the farm spanning 100 acres, this family-owned business has made smart use of their land as a way to pick apples, have fun and enjoy country life. There’s a children’s entertainment area, plenty of areas to enjoy fresh food and you can even bring your own picnic lunch! There are huge hay bales, slides, tractor rides and an overall atmosphere of relaxed fun. The big draw this season (and hopefully on an on-going basis) is their all-new “Summer Cider Nights” happening Fridays and Saturdays in July and August from 4 pm to 10 pm featuring live music on their gorgeous, scenic, outdoor patio. “We’ve created something that’s aimed to bring our guests to visit the farm during off-apple season months...it’s a great reason to come out, enjoy the farm and great music and relax.” says co-owner Scott Chudleigh. I spent a few hours on the farm to soak in the experience and can see why visiting Chudleigh’s has become a ritual for families and friends for decades.
I asked Scott “how would you describe the Chudleigh’s experience?” He responded with: “It’s a way to get away from regular life, to get away from the daily hustle and bustle. We’re here to give you a chance to destress. We offer unstructured play and encourage you to climb on a bale of hay, get on a wagon ride, go down a big slide. Walk the grounds, explore, and enjoy yourself. It’s a great new world we have here and want to share it with you. Everything is safe here for adults and kids. We're a fun farm and are happy to welcome you.” The family has shown smart foresight in proactively researching how they can better serve their guests. Keeping the fun and engaging elements that made them popular (those mouthwatering Apple Blossoms are a must!) and blending modern attractions including an outdoor patio, outdoor pizza oven and the new Summer Cider Nights experience is a wonderful way to get existing folks to make more memories and to allow first (of many) time guests to create new ones. chudleighs.com

SO YOU’VE ELECTED A STEAMED HAM by john murray lewis Despite its utter lack of ideas, credentials, convictions, or redeeming qualities of any kind, you have elected a steamed ham. Now what?
Who cares? It's not like they're ever going to get built, but you'll make out like a bandit long before anyone notices!
1. STAY CALM
5. CLOSE YOUR FACEBOOK ACCOUNT
2. CALL YOUR MPP
6. PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF BOB RAE, RESIST THE URGE TO STEAL A TASTE OF THE HAM'S MOIST PINK FLESH
A steamed ham is usually not sentient enough to pose a real threat. Yes, on occasion, hams have caused irreversible harm through sheer negligence or the residual malice of a restless pig-ghost trapped within its own succulent, dismembered body. But that would never happen here, right? I mean, not again? Tell them it was all a terrible mistake. You didn't actually expect a steamed ham to win this thing! And besides, you only voted for it because Hazel McCallion told you to. After all, if Hazel told you to vote for a half-eaten bag of all-dressed chips, would you? Of course you would! No sane person could hold you responsible for your actions!
3. TAKE ALL YOUR NEWFOUND CASH...
If there's any good that will come from the imposition of myopic, reactionary populism, it's the extra $3.25 you'll pocket from inexplicably lower gas prices, understaffed public services, unsustainably-priced beer, the renunciation of our moral obligation to suffering asylum seekers, and the unlawful termination of one rich Hydro guy. It might even be enough to offset all those Green ON rebates you could have scored under a rational human government!
4. ...AND INVEST IT IN SUBWAYS!
Subways to Markham! To Pickering! To... I don't know, Oshawa? Stouffville? Regina? Your front door?

Nasty memes, embarrassing jokes, endless mockery: you're in for a rough few years on social media. Even your cousin Craig has the high ground here, and he voted for an empty bag of Hickory Sticks in the 80s.
You know you want to. The glistening skin. The firm muscle, the rivulets of tender fat just beneath the surface. The clear, sticky-sweet juices. Just one lick, am I right? No! Don't do it. Just don't. You'll never forgive yourself.
7. TEACH YOUR CHILDREN the compassionate, evidence-based understanding of gender and sex that we must all possess to build a healthier and more inclusive society. After all, who else would you trust to take a pedagogicallysound approach to such an important and complex curriculum? Trained scientists and educational professionals? No, of course not! That's what single-issue voters are for! So there you have it. By following these seven foolproof steps, you and your family will continue to thrive even as your government crumbles into a corporatist hamocracy. And if things get really bad, cheer up: at least you didn't elect a competent but vaguely unlikable cabbage.

Self-Monitoring:
A Path to Improved Health
by gaby mammone Measuring your blood pressure at home is recommended if you have a family history of heart problems, are at risk for heart disease, or have been diagnosed with prehypertension or hypertension. Regular monitoring will provide you with confidence to control your health. High blood pressure can be caused by many factors including stress, high cholesterol, fear, or plaque buildup in the arteries. Even the ‘white coat’ effect can influence some peoples’ blood pressure if you are anxious when in a medical setting. Measuring your blood pressure at home is an excellent way to understand how your blood pressure changes during the day. Keeping a log allows you to track the effectiveness of medication and how your blood pressure fluctuates with lifestyle changes. Even if your blood pressure readings are in the normal range, be sure to continue your medication until you consult with your doctor.
Monitoring your own blood pressure is inexpensive and simple. When tracked regularly, you gain a stronger sense of responsibility and ownership for your health. ALTERNATIVES TO BLACK DRESS SHOES by claudia mio
“Check out my new shoes” said my friend Adam. “Wait, another black pair?” I asked. “They look a lot like your other black shoes.” “My oxfords?” he said. “No, the other black ones.” “My loafers?” “No the other black ones!” And so the story goes. Black shoes/boots are the most worn, over used, “safe choice” color for men’s footwear. No man’s footwear inventory would be complete without it, I get it. However, does every dress shoe you own have to be black? Simply put? No. Having said that, what are the options besides black dress shoes? Brown is a stylish and beautiful alternative with several attractive shades to choose from, including: • The dark brown oxford is perfect with a navy or grey suit. • The medium brown, ox-blood wing tip or brogue is a classic and works with grey suits, dress pants and denim. • The loafer is a great match with sportswear, chinos and jeans.
26 MODERN MISSISSAUGA | LATE SUMMER 2018
• The athletic shoe – this is usually leather/suede or canvas mix and can work in a range of colors. A white sole is trendy and teams up with sportswear, denim or chinos…remember to keep the colors monochromatic. • The chelsea boot – chocolate brown nubuck or suede. Instant cool factor with dark denim in the fall in a dressed-down but quality way. • And my all-time personal favorite: blue suede or nubuck shoes, Oxford or brogue style. The list could go on with saddle shoes, sneakers (that’s a whole other genre,) driving shoes, etc. - all in a multitude of colors not to mention textures. There are also plenty of color choices for shoelaces and soles. Now it’s time to look in your closet and count your pairs of black shoes. Don’t purge them all but do an thorough review and keep the highest quality, newest looking ones. Maybe that’s two pairs. Max three. Still trepidatious about expanding your inventory? Try patterned socks with color! Claudia Mio is an experienced, approachable and wonderful wardrobe stylist and owns "Go Wear You Want

CITRUS MAPLE SALMON by laura qusen
I love finding interesting Canadian ingredients that I can add to recipes. In this case, it was the yuzu infused maple syrup from Quebec. The flavour is quite unique with a distinctive citrus twist and when I tasted it, I thought, “this does not belong on pancakes”. Enter Maple Glazed Salmon. Salmon is so great with some sweetness and of course, citrus and salmon are perfect together. So far so good, but it needed some zing. Enter Sriracha! The combo of flavours make this salmon a Canadiana-Asian fusion dish that you won’t be able to stop eating. Everything in moderation, except for this salmon recipe. INGREDIENTS

Pour about 1/2 of the sauce over the salmon and use a spatula to generously cover the salmon with a thin layer. Wrap the foil around the salmon to create a steam pack. Bake for 15 minutes on the middle rack. Remove the salmon from the oven an open the foil to expose the salmon. Set the oven to Broil on high. Put the salmon back in the oven, still on the middle rack and broil for 3 - 4 minutes. Keep watch that it doesn’t burn Top the salmon with remaining sauce, fresh cilantro and serve alongside steamed white rice and sautéed bell peppers.

“Our producers and suppliers dictate the menu here at KAGE depending on what’s fresh and local. We'd rather work with the farmers and their hardships in the growing season, rather than against them and demand constant supply.” says Singh. In 2010, he attended university for sustainable agriculture and food systems. Limited by the cafeteria food program at the university, he set out en route to the nearest market and began to cook his own meals in his dorm. This in turn ignited an intense passion for the craft of cooking and later found himself explaining to family and friends that he would pursue a career in the culinary arts. After graduating culinary school, he trained in fine dining establishments both internationally and locally, managing his first kitchen at 19.
Singh says: “The world of food is ever changing, as cooks we are constantly and consistently learning and that’s what drives us daily. With a strong importance on locality, community and tradition we have completely surrendered ourselves to the exploration of food, ingredient and technique.” Dedicated to serving honest food, using both traditional methods and modern technique, he manages the kitchen at KAGE as both an institution of gastronomic evolution as well as an establishment dedicated to Nikkei culinary experiences. 905.804.0888 kagerestobar.ca 3038 Hurontario St, Unit 9
