An amazing autumn in Mississauga
Where to see fall colours in the city
Thankful feelings with John Murray Lewis Malton Minutes Fighting back against flooding
Welcome to the Autumn issue of Modern Mississauga! Editor' s Letter
As the vibrant colours make our city glow with yellow and orange, there’s plenty to enjoy in this issue.
The Mississauga Symphony Orchestra starts another new concert season, we highlight a local artist reaching international fame, and there’s hilarious performance coming to town later this year we showcase.
Just north of Mississauga, Aurora opens a new performance hall and our Modern Traveller section gives you the best itinerary for a One Tank Trip to Niagara Falls.
Four family cars are focussed on in the Motoring section and John Murray Lewis’ streak of jovial articles hits 47. If you need ideas for where to see autumn’s colours in Mississauga, we’ve got you covered, plus we dig into what the city is doing to combat future flooding and taking care of those impacted by this summer’s massive rainfall. Finally, two local restaurants earn acknowledgement from the prestigious Michelin Guide.
Enjoy autumn’s astounding atmosphere in Mississauga and know that we truly do appreciate you for being here, whether it’s your first time or if you’ve been with us since the beginning in 2015.
Be well, be kind and we’ll see you on social media and in the community.

A MAYOR’S GALA CONCERT
The Mississauga Symphony Orchestra Launches their 2024/25 Season
Join Mayor Carolyn Parrish and the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra for The Heroic Symphony; a Mayor’s Gala concert to begin the orchestra’s 2024/25 concert season, and a 50th anniversary celebration for the City of Mississauga! A special post-concert VIP reception with Mayor Parrish, Maestro Mastromonaco, members of Council, and special guests will wrap what will be a fantastic evening of music and networking.
The Heroic Symphony will feature two masterpieces of the Romantic era – Chopin’s first piano concerto, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 “Eroica”. Metropolis Overture, a special composition by Mississauga composer Larysa Kuzmenko, completes a program that is not to be missed. Witness the power and heroic spirit of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, a revolutionary work that transformed the symphonic genre. Beethoven’s third symphony bridged the Classical and Romantic eras, influenced countless composers, and redefined the possibilities of orchestral music.
Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 is a remarkable piece of Romantic music that showcases virtuosic piano technique and lyrical, expressive style. Composed in 1830 when Chopin was just 20 years old, it remains a timeless testament to Chopin’s
genius. Eric Guo, winner of the International Chopin Piano Concerto, will join the orchestra for a thrilling performance that will showcase his abilities as an incredible concert pianist.
Originally commissioned to celebrate the City of Mississauga’s 40th anniversary, Metropolis Overture by Mississauga composer Larysa Kuzmenko traces the evolution of Mississauga from rural townships to a bustling city. Sonic depictions of farmlands, apple orchards, and the fast-paced nature of Mississauga today all resonate in this wonderful tribute to our city.
Regular priced concert tickets start at $40. Special pricing is available for seniors, families, youth (15-26), and groups of 10 or more. FREE underground parking is included with every ticket purchase.
Post-concert VIP reception tickets are $50. Enjoy one complimentary drink along with a selection of hors d’oeuvres and desserts as you mingle and toast to the beginning of another fantastic season!
To purchase tickets, visit mississaugasymphony.ca -or- call the Living Arts Centre box office at: 905-306-6000.

1. CONGRATULATIONS ON WINNING BEST ONLINE CONTENT AT THE 2024 MISSISSAUGA MUSIC AWARDS! DESCRIBE YOUR REACTION WHEN YOU WERE ANNOUNCED AS THE WINNER.
I was super happy when I was announced as the winner for “Best Online Content” I have been creating content in form of music videos independently since 2016. There is so much work that goes behind creative a full length music video and its very different to today’s short form content style. Right from ideas, to working with different people, location recede, fighting authorities to let us shoot in peace to putting it all together, its a lot of effort behind the scenes when you have no label or sponsors doing all this for you. Getting recognized for all my efforts and achievements on the online content I have put out through the years felt amazing and very gratifying.
2. WHAT INSPIRED AND LED YOU TO THE WORLD OF MUSIC AND WHAT DREW YOU TO THE BAGPIPES?
Music has been a part of my life for almost as long as I can remember, but I learned to have talent for it when I was in 3rd grade. Singing was and has always been my first love; my mother got me into music and really honed my talent for
singing. She used to prep me for all sorts of music competitions in schools and my community and when I started winning those competitions, my confidence rose and I recognized that I have a musical ability. As I grew up, my musical inspirations changed, from being inspired by Pop-stars to slowly finding my interest in rock and heavy metal music.
I formed a heavy metal band in India and was the lead vocalist and in 2012, I discovered my love for bagpipes! Browsing through YouTube I came across a Swiss folk metal band called “Eluevietie” with a bagpiper! This absolutely caught my attention and soon after, I found myself obsessing over bagpipes and wanted to learn everything about them.
With no bagpipe teachers or schools in my city, I sought knowledge online and slowly be friended some veteran players and young players trying to play them nontraditionally.
I set out to learn this instrument myself through an e-book; I was that obsessed with learning. Something that really drew me to them and drove me to keep learning was its uniqueness; I felt like the true potential of this instrument was yet to be brought out and had so many ideas about what I could do with it.
3. YOUR MUSICAL VERSATILITY IS ADMIRABLE; HOW HAS THAT SHAPED YOUR CREATIVITY?
My musical versatility might seem admirable to you but it is so confusing
for me especially while creating. I love and genuinely feel inspired by so many genres almost equally that I find it really hard to pick a certain direction when it comes to music. Maybe that’s what lead to the cultural fusion music I embarked on which I now call “Celtic Punjabi” which my audience loves. It was an experiment I put out in 2018, and I was overwhelmed with the response I received, with my videos getting over 13 million views and people asking for more.
However, the artist and creative side of me always loves to explore the new inspirations that I get. I feel like the versatility is both a gift and a curse. A gift because I feel there is just so much I can create and offer my audience and curse because straying too much can dilute your audience as a creator. Ultimately, I love the process of getting inspired with an idea and seeing it to fruition.
4. WHAT SUCCINCT ADVICE WOULD YOU SHARE WITH ASPIRING MUSICIANS?
Be confident in putting your art out there, take risks, execute ideas before judging them. Let the audience decide
5. WHAT'S IN STORE FOR THE NEXT 1-3 YEARS FOR YOU?
Definitely touring, more new music, an album, collaborations with different artists, and hopefully more awards haha!

NEW PERFORMANCE HALL OPENS LESS THAN ONE HOUR FROM MISSISSAUGA
Aurora, a picturesque town located about 45 minutes northeast of Mississauga, is set to unveil a stunning new performance hall as part of the Aurora Town Square project. This ambitious development is poised to reshape the town’s cultural and entertainment offerings, drawing both residents and visitors to enjoy year-round activities.
The Town Square features a 32,000-square-foot addition to the historic Church Street School, now home to a state-ofthe-art performance hall. With seating for up to 250 people, the hall is designed to be a flexible space for performances, events, and a wide variety of arts programming. Complementing the hall is a permanent artifact collection from the Aurora Museum & Archives, housed in a specially designed, environmentally controlled space.
The project also includes a 29,000-square-foot outdoor community space that will host events, performances, and gatherings. During the warmer months, an interactive water feature and amphitheater will be the heart of community activities.
In the winter, the area will transform into a beautiful skating loop lit by an overhead catenary lighting system.
One of the highlights of the Town Square project is its yearround connectivity. The new Treasure Hill Bridge will connect the performance hall and museum to the Aurora Public Library, offering visitors seamless access to the town’s cultural resources.
Town Square is more than just a venue—it's a visionary project that will enrich Aurora’s cultural landscape, promote economic growth, and foster community engagement. It aims to serve Aurora’s growing population and diverse cultural tastes, with the potential to draw visitors from across York Region and beyond.
With this innovative project, Aurora is stepping up to meet the increasing demand for cultural programming, creating a space where arts, heritage, and community come together to enhance quality of life.

Holiday Hilarity Leaps onto Mississauga Stage...
BUCKLE YOUR THEATRE SEATS!
British comedy legends James & Jamesy bring their wildly popular holiday classic, O Christmas Tea: A British Comedy to Ontario this Holiday Season.
For over a decade, the 3-time London Impresario Award-winning duo James & Jamesy (Aaron Malkin and Alastair Knowles) have been flooding theatres with joy and laughter with their multi-award winning festive comedy.
Reminiscent of classic British pantos, O Christmas Tea is rich with wordplay, comic physicality and cleverly crafted interactive elements, yet the real magic is found in the duo's boundless imagination and endearing chemistry.
"The Christmas season is the time of year when we are encouraged to dream big, embrace imagination, and celebrate child-like excitement for magic and merriment," says Jamesy (Alastair Knowles) who plays Jamesy. "With O Christmas Tea, we bring together multiple generations in the theatre, laughing and enjoying each other's company — and ours."
Fans and critics alike rave about the duo's ability to elicit a sense of play in a room full of adults and children. “The unique production sends audience members home invigorated, rejuvenated and joyful that the child in you is
now awake," says reviewer Christopher Hoile (Stage Door Toronto) in his five-star review of the show.
Juxtaposing British propriety with an unabashed love for the unexpected, O Christmas Tea casts away the conventions of theatre and joyously breaks the fourth wall. In fact, just about the only thing these two don't break is their Royal Doulton tea set in this wonderful evening of play and whimsy.
If you can't make it to Mississauga’s Living Arts Centre on November 26, O Christmas Tea also plays in these nearby venues and beyond:
Nov 17: Burlington Performing Arts Centre
Nov 14: Milton - FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton
Nov 21-24: Toronto - CAA Theatre (Mirvish)
Dec 28: Hamilton - Theatre Aquarius
Dec 29: Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts
ONE TANK TRIP
Niagara Fun &
& Food in
Niagara Falls
Only a little over an hour from Mississauga, Niagara Falls is a great option for one, two or a few days away. Get up close with the rushing rapids and the world-famous Falls from above and below, slow down with serene attractions and rediscover this wondrous part of Canada. Here’s your list of what to do, where to eat and where to stay in Niagara Falls.
by jay kana | photos by jay kana
Whirlpool Aero Car
For unmatched views of the majestic Niagara Gorge and Class 6 whitewater rapids, the Whirlpool Aero Car is your key to opening panoramic views at over 200 feet high. The one-ish km round trip takes approximately 10 minutes and you’ll switch sides of the aerial cable car halfway through for balanced views.
White Water Walk
After descending 230 feet in an elevator and a short walk through a tunnel, you’re greeted by the base of the Niagara Gorge and it’s rushing rapids, some of the strongest in North America. Stroll the 1,000 foot long boardwalk with the rapids running alongside. There are plenty of information panels, plus two viewing platforms for a closer experience.
The Tunnel at the Niagara Parks Power Station
Another elevator ride here, this one’s180 feet down bringing you to the start of a 2,200 ft (0.67 km) tunnel featuring ambient lighting at night. Soak in the rich history as you stroll toward the tunnels end, which brings you to a spectacular sight; a nearly ground-level view of the Falls. Be sure to look up and to the left at night to see the brilliant beams of light collide with the water.
Niagara Parks Power Station
Blending history with the modern world, the power station is fully charged with excitement, sights and sounds. Between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. continuously, “Currents,” an electrifying sound and light show occurs that’s educational and entertaining. Be sure to do
The Tunnel both at night and during the day for the best of both views. There’s also a Tesla Coil that’s able to play music! Enjoy a guided or selfguided bilingual audio tour to fully plug-in to its rich history.
Journey Behind The Falls
Another elevator descent, this time 125 feet, along with a short walk, brings you to the main viewing area. There’s an upper and lower deck for spectacular views of the Falls. Rain ponchos are provided as you’ll almost certainly get wet, which is a terrific trade-off for what you’ll see. Take the tunnel to your right as you walk in for two other viewing areas showing the water’s strength.
Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory & Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens
The Butterfly Conservatory houses nearly 600 feet of paths to appreciate and admire the over 2,000 butterflies, complete with waterfalls, feeding areas and if you’re fortunate, one might land on you. The 11,000 square foot facility is the largest of its kind in North America and is impressively a teaching facility for the Niagara Parks School of Horticulture. Ninety-nine acres, more than 80,000 grown on-site and serene setting comes to you at the Botanical Gardens. Take your time exploring the grounds and revel in its natural beauty and elegance.
The Floral Showhouse
Featuring up to 20,000 annually grown plants, enjoy both the indoor and outdoor areas, adorned with fantastic floral displays.
Orchids, tropical plants, palms and many more varieties await you and your camera.
Table Rock Bistro
This new addition the dining scene blends astounding outdoor views from the seasonal patio, upscale, casual dining and a smart menu selection. Using a wide array of local ingredients, this FeastON certified menu is piled high with good eats, paired with the Falls as a backdrop. They also feature over 100 local producers of VQA wines, spirits, ciders and beers.
Table Rock House
Across the hall from the Table Rock Bistro is the famous Table Rock House, offering the closest view of the Falls as you dine, thanks to floor to ceiling windows. Also heavily invested in utilizing local ingredients and suppliers, the menu selections include steak, lobster and vegetarian options, complete with delicious desserts.
Queen Victoria Place
The theme of supporting and using local carries on here, as do the views of the Falls from their patio. Chef Matt Hemingsen is as local as you can get, being born, educated and trained in Niagara, and is a natural fit here. There’s just enough variety in the menu to be approachable without overwhelming, with a variety of meat and vegetarian dishes.
Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview Hotel & Suites
Recharge and relax at the Hilton Niagara Falls and be sure to get
a room facing the Falls because, well, the views! Also, you’ll get to enjoy the nightly fireworks display from the comfort of your room between Victoria Day and Thanksgiving. Comfortable beds, several amenities, including a restaurant on the 33rd floor, in addition to the other dining options, all make this centrally located hotel an ideal choice.
2025 MINI Countryman
The chariot I chose for this adventure was the 2025 MINI Countryman. All-new for 2025, MINI’s largest offering ever goes heavy on the tech-side by using but a single, circular 9.4-inch OLED infotainment screen. Gone is the traditional instrument cluster and replaced with a head-up display. Up front, the cabin is spacious and comfortable for the driver and passenger, with rear seat space being generous. Cargo space is spacious at 450 litres, with just enough space for four carry-on bags for a weekend away. Familiar styling with modern tweaks still retain the MINI’s trademark style, and the 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft. of torque come through a 2.0 L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, providing ample power and a smooth ride in both urban and rural settings. Click here for a full review of this premium, family-friendly crossover.
As you use this guide to plan your Niagara Falls adventure, I highly recommend picking up a Niagara Falls Adventure Pass, which can save you up to 57% in total across attractions, transportation, culinary locations and gift shops.

amazing autumn adventures mississauga
by jay kana
Autumn is the beautiful transition between the hazy days of summer and the chills of winter. It’s hoodies and bulky sweaters, scarves and boots season, paired with your favourite beverage from a local indie shop. It’s curling up on your favourite couch or chair and reading Modern Mississauga, Modern Traveller and Modern Motoring… kidding kidding, kinda. Here are six ways to enjoy the city in autumn that can be done alone, with family, old friends and perhaps, new ones. Tag us in your social media posts as you fall for autumn in Mississauga.
COOL COLOURS
Experience autumn’s colours throughout Mississauga through our article on pages 30 and 31. The vibrant colours will be throughout the city so use our article as a starting point and venture out from there.
LEARN MORE AT THE LIBRARY
Spend some time at the recently renovated Hazel McCallion Central Library. There are so many engaging new offerings via their “Makerspace” resources, including improving your digital media skills, a photography and video studio, sound studio and recording booths, a digital media lab, 3D printer, laser cutters and more. With a central location and a vast amount of resources, the place is overflowing with creativity and waiting for you.
GET OUT
Before winters whisks itself in, enjoy the crisp autumn weather through hundreds of parks and trails. One of our favourites is The Riverwood Conservancy as it feels like you’re removed from city life and planted in serenity.
Rattray Marsh is another one that’s high on our list and evokes the same feeling of being transported out of the city and into a place of tranquility.
FIND A NEW LOCAL LOVE
There are hundreds of independently owned businesses across Mississauga and as you prepare for the Holidays, now is a great time to find a few new spots. Whether it’s a restaurant or retailer, you’ll likely find something through social media pages/groups or within your own network.
VOLUNTEER
Investing your time into the community makes such a difference to those on the receiving side. Whether it’s at one of our food banks, who are sadly experiencing high usage levels, at an animal shelter/animal rescue organization/pet store, at our arts gem, Creative Hub 1352, or somewhere else, please consider it. Yes, financial donations also help. However, volunteering can create new friendships and it’s a first hand look at what the return is on your time investment.
SHARING IS CARING
Introduce a family member and or friend to one or some of your favourite places in the city. You can be their tour guide for a couple of hours or for the day. It could be that independent restaurant in the corner of the city, a favourite trail, shop or anything in between. Maybe it’s an art gallery, the coffee shop where they know your name, a favourite place to enjoy live music or your secret spot to soak in Lake Ontario’s superb scenery.

FALL for coloursautumn’s in mississauga
by
jay kana | photo by lyndon li on unsplash
FALL
As with every autumn, Mississauga will fall into waves of glowing yellows, oranges and reds as autumn springs from summer. While it’s only a brief appearance for a few weeks, it’s always worth admiring and appreciating. Grab a coffee/tea from your favourite locally owned coffee shop/cafe, charge your smartphone and or camera and explore the magical outdoors of our city. Here are a few spots across Mississauga where fall foliage stands to offer the most plentiful bouquets of colour.
Riverwood Conservancy
Nature, history and art come together to create the peaceful and memorable Riverwood. Located in central Mississauga, Riverwood extends north from Burnhamthorpe Road West to Highway 403. This 150 acre not-so-hidden-anymore oasis features more than 475 species of plants and animals, multiple scenic woodland trails and beautiful gardens. It’s a spectacular sight any time of the year, but even more so when the fall colours take over.
Rattray Marsh
On the shores of Lake Ontario, Rattray Marsh Conservation Area is a remarkable location to witness the dazzling autumn scenery. Various trails, elevated pathways and boardwalks are bordered by splendid fall scenery. When you go, you’re rewarded with serenity in nature in one of the city’s most unique environmental settings.
Meadowvale Conservation Area
In the north end Mississauga, the Meadowvale Conservation Area is split by the Credit River. The west side features ample multi-use trails that lead into pockets of forested areas brimming with the fiery colours of this time of the year. Make sure to bring a camera and snap a few pictures for keepsakes of the trip.
Streetsville Memorial Park
With the majestic Credit River by your side, enjoy the beauty of Streetsville’s Memorial Park trails. Follow the Culham Trail and enjoy serenity and bursts of autumn’s finest colours. Whether it’s with family, friends, or a solo experience, this part of Mississauga can make you forget that the city is mostly paved and littered with condo towers.
Erindale Park
Near the intersection of Dundas Street West and Mississauga Road lays Erindale Park, complete with 222-acres, it’s Mississauga’s largest park. Featuring the Culham Trail enjoy the majestic views of the Credit River and ravines.
Go at your own pace and soak in the splendid scenery, which shines brightly in autumn.

As we near the state-mandated day of giving thanks, I find myself reflecting on all the things I'm thankful for. From the crisp breeze rustling through the riotous splendour of autumn leaves, to the bountiful harvest of a well-tended garden, to the indomitable idea of juche that enlivens the spirits of hardworking men and women the world over, there's just so much to appreciate. Here's an exhaustive list, including the 2024-2025 season's most desirable vacation destinations.
THE CONCEPT OF GRATITUDE
Let's get the obvious one out of the way. Without the concept of gratitude, nobody could be thankful for anything, not now or ever. Indeed, gratitude, you are second only to the memory of our Eternal President in my heart. Thank you!
FAMILY
Love, obligation, unquestioning deference... if you've got a family, you know what I'm talking about. There's nothing quite like coming home from a hard day of patriotic labour to find your loving family waiting for you, assuming, of course, that their opinions are respectable and activities unwaveringly loyal to our blessed patriarch, without whom the family is like a headless dog.
MEN
NAMED KIM
What is it about men named Kim that exudes such strength, such comfort, such unyielding leadership? We're lucky to have them. To
PLANTS
FEELINGS*
all you hot Kims out there, keep it up! We see you, we appreciate you, and I'm making it my personal goal in 2025 to erect another colossal statue in your honour.
They're green, they're brown, they're full of bugs. When you eat one, sometimes it's great, but sometimes you die. In other words, plants are like meat for vegetarians, and I love them for that.
BEES
Love 'em or hate 'em, you gotta love bees. Everything about them demands respect: their workmanlike ethos, their single-minded dedication to the hive, their matching outfits. I mean, what's not to love? And most importantly, without bees, we would not have the 2007 classic Bee Movie starring Jerome Seinfeld and Rennifer Zellwegger, the only acceptable piece of art made since 1953.
MOUNT PAEKTU
Oh, heavenly Paektu Mountain, sacred symbol of camaraderie and revolution! Birthplace of legend, where even amidst the chilling winds of winter, flowers bloom! Where else can the weary traveller experience rocks, bottled water, and the glorious story of colonial resistance? Radiant Mount Paektu, where the peerless Hyongje Falls sunder the earth, where the sky is only 216 steps away! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
FEELINGS*
MATHEMATICS
1 + 1 = 2, right? Not without mathematics. Thank you, Kim Il Sung, for inventing mathematics to defeat the Japanese!
PERSONAL COMPUTERS
Where would I be without personal computers, AKA "PCs"?
Certainly not here, on a computer. Computer, you are a pure distillation of the energy and innovation of the human mind, unless you are a Samsung or LG product, in which case you are utter trash. Get out of this list before you embarrass yourself!
COMBO PLATTERS
Not sure what you want to eat, but sort of want a bit of everything? That's me, and that's why I rely on the magic of combo platters. And there's no better combo platter on this unjust earth than the one you'll find at the world-famous Okryu-gwan, whose signature dish, the scintillating raengmyŏn, is like a chilly bowl of buckwheat paradise straight from the depths of Heaven Lake. Combo platters, I salute you.
MASIKRYONG SKI RESORT
Oh, to once again ascend the dizzying heights and experience the unsurpassed structural integrity of Masikryong Ski Resort, built in only ten months so that people everywhere might enjoy the wonders of winter sports more readily. When I think of you, dear Masikryong Ski Resort, precious jewel of Kangwon Province, my heart overflows.
SAMJIYŎN
Palatial, majestic Samjiyŏn city, metropolis of modernity, capital and nonpareil of amenities and facilities, the shame of Paris and Berlin... who would not be overwhelmed by gratitude when walking your glittering streets, observing your president railway, or falling into your three wet lakes? To know that such a place exists, while I am surrounded on all sides by imperialist decadence... it's almost too much to bear.
WORDLE
When Wordle's creator, Josh Wordle, created Wordle, Wordle fans everywhere rejoiced. And I was no exception. Josh, please know that sometimes I wake in the middle of night, damp and aghast, feverishly dreaming of fleeing to North Korea so that I might escape the capitalist grind of another day. Then I remember the 2-4 minutes of relief that comes from playing Wordle every morning, and that convinces me to stay. Curse you, Joshua Wordle, for discovering five-letter words. You are the only thing standing between me and becoming Dennis Rodman.

MALTON MINUTES
by natalie hart | photo by freepik
It’s been a busy summer and will be an even busier fall. From new plantings along Goreway, new banners along Airport and Derry & of course Canada Day there was a lot to celebrate in Malton this summer. This fall we will once again have our family friendly Diwali event with children’s activities and professional fireworks for all to enjoy being held at the Great Punjab Centre.
It has also been a time of renewal, we can all see the progress has been made on creating the spaces for a new grocery store at Westwood and that’s really exciting. It will likely open in 2025, but it is nice to see the progress for sure. Fall often makes us think of renewal, the new school year and so much else feels like a new start for so many of us. It’s important to keep in mind that back to school means back to a lot of pedestrians so be careful when you are driving in our community.
If you are also planning on some fall clean up or renovations make sure you take a look at How to get rid of - Region of Peel (peelregion.ca) for how to dispose of different items. If you aren’t sure, or you see garbage that was missed calling 311 is the best way to get it picked up. We all need to play our part in keeping our community the way we want to see it and calling in garbage is a great way to help.
Don’t forget to continue to shop local, Malton has some of the best options for tasty food anywhere in the city. What are your hidden gems that you go to but don’t share with others? As the season for gathering with families approaches, I hope you all have a chance to shine a spotlight on a local favourite.
Mississauga Approves Financial
Relief for Property Owners & Fast-tracks Infrastructure to
COMBAT FLOODING
In response to the severe flooding that impacted Mississauga this summer, City Council approved several measures to provide immediate relief and long-term solutions to help lessen the effects of climate change.
Council approved a Residential Compassionate Flood Relief Grant, which will offer a one-time payment of $1,000 to Mississauga residential property owners who suffered basement flooding damages during the severe weather events on July 16, 2024, or August 17 and 18, 2024. In both cases, the rainfall exceeded the 100-year storm level, which historically has a very low chance (about 1%) of happening in any given year.
This initiative aims to provide financial relief to property owners hardest hit by the summer floods.
Also, Council approved a Basement Flooding Prevention Rebate Program to help residents make basement flood prevention improvements more affordable. Homeowners can receive rebates of up to $6,800 for eligible measures.
The Flood Relief Grant will be open to the public by December 1, 2024, followed by the Basement Flooding Prevention Rebate in February 2025.
The City is investing in upgrading its infrastructure, including the stormwater system, to protect property, ensure public safety and make Mississauga more resilient to climate change. But the City cannot do it alone; funding is needed from other levels of government.
Council directed staff to apply to the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund. This provincial program aims to protect communities by investing in the development, repair, rehabilitation and expansion of core water, wastewater, and stormwater projects to promote growth and enable housing.
Mississauga’s past investment in stormwater management facilities, drainage networks, and other infrastructure, functioned as designed and reduced what could have been more widespread flooding. However, the unprecedented rainfall this summer shows that more investment is required to further control flood waters and meet the demands of a changing climate.
Since 2016, the City has invested more than $231 million in stormwater infrastructure. A further $308 million is included in the City’s 10-year Stormwater Capital Plan for ongoing upgrades and maintenance to combat future storms. Over the next 10-years, Mississauga’s Stormwater
program will build, expand, and maintain the system.
To address recent flooding, Council approved several new projects and directed staff to fast-track several existing initiatives in 2024:
• Review Flooding Concerns in North Streetsville
• Assessment of Trunk Storm Sewer System in Harvest Drive area
• Design of Storm Sewer Upgrades for Historic Malton Village
• Riverine Flooding Review
The City will look to take on other new initiatives in 2025 and 2026 including:
• Construction of Storm Sewer Upgrades for Historic Malton Village
• Outlet Pipe from Runningbrook Drive through Cedarbrook Park
• Design for Downspout Disconnection Pilot in Black Walnut Tr. area
• Streetsville Area Storm Sewer Capacity Review
Council also approved a plan that will accelerate completion of the Dixie-Dundas Flood Mitigation Project by approximately six years.

THE MISSISSAUGA MICHELIN GUIDE
Two Mississauga Restaurants Mentioned in the 2024 MICHELIN Guide by jay kana |

From Ridgeway Plaza to Dixie and Eglinton to Port Credit and several points in between, Mississauga’s food scene is extra hot, figuratively, of course. There really is something for every palate across the city and for even the most particular. The famed MICHELIN Guide, in existence for over a century, has awarded two local restaurants spots in their 2024 MICHELIN Guide Toronto and Region selections.
First up is Tamarind Modern Indian Bistro (what a great name!) and here’s what was said about them in earning their “Recommended” status achievement:
“There’s a lot to take in at this colorful Indian restaurant, located in the frenzy of a Mississauga shopping district. For one, the menu covers extensive ground and features the familiar dishes you’d expect to see, alongside more curious creations like Chettinad chicken tacos and panipuri shots. Special weekend events get rowdy with live music and dancing. But for all the flash and the noise, there’s substance here too. Curries like the lamb Roganjosh are rich and hearty, and vegetable specialties like paneer cooked in a serious onion and tomato sauce pack volumes of flavor. Even those Chetinnad chicken tacos are surprisingly convincing. Servers might ask how comfortable you are with spice levels. Ask for spicy –and a side of raita for insurance.”
They’re centrally located at 33 City Centre, across the street from Square One.
Next up is Guru Lukshmi, which earned a spot on the specific Bib Gourmand list, which balances “good food with moderate prices.” Here’s what was said about them:
“It’s a good thing this South Indian restaurant takes up multiple bays in a sprawling Mississauga shopping center. If the dining room were any smaller, the wait to get in would be endless. Reservations are recommended for this landmark that is the undisputed champion of dosas, offered in dazzling variety like nowhere else in the region. The signature Mysore Bhaji Dosa packed with fantastic aloo masala is a good place to start for first timers, who will question whether they can finish the whole thing before doing just that. But there’s more: Idlys, vadas, and uttapam are made fresh, served hot, and come with warm sambar and refreshing chutneys. All of this food comes and goes in a rapid blur, and return visits are planned before you’re out the door.”
They’re located in north Mississauga at Derry and McLaughlin at 7070 St. Barbara Blvd.
Congratulations to both and hopefully there’ll be a second serving of Mississauga restaurants in the 2025 guide!
