downtown is an outstanding recovery of our city’s core. Modesto is one of California’s oldest cities and began with the hub, which would become the downtown area and was built along the rail lines in the 1870s. As trains brought goods in and out of town, the city thrived. In the early part of the 20th century, downtown Modesto was the place to be, one of the largest cities in the Central Valley. across the country and Modesto was no exception. Attempts were made in the latter half of the 20th century to revitalize downtown centers like Modesto’s, with limited success. In the last couple of decades, however, a major shift has been happening as Americans, once again found a desire for urban living. This shift has been a windfall for Modesto’s downtown, which has come back to life with the help of such organizations as the Downtown Modesto Partnership and the Downtown Improvement District, which are focused on making downtown Modesto a flourishing attraction throughout the Central Valley once again. The Downtown Modesto Partnership was put together through a grassroots initiative that involved many business and property owners and concerned citizens, as well as community groups such as the Modesto Chamber of Commerce, Opportunity Stanislaus, the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, and the Downtown Improvement District as a way to ensure that the revitalization of Modesto’s downtown could be given the attention it deserves. In recent years, a healthy downtown has become more important than ever. Josh Bridegroom, CEO of the Downtown Modesto Partnership, is optimistic about

WORK IN PROGRESS a series spotlighting some of our area’s most innovative and successful companies
DO GOOD DISTILLERY IS DOING GOOD By: Noel Daniel What began as talk over whiskey and cigars blossomed into a dream come brew. Owner Jim Harrelson’s boundless passion for his craft saw the creation of a distillery that is innovative, locally-sourced, and sustainable. It’s almost surprising that such a successful and unique distillery can take up root so close by.
“In the past year, we've racked up over 1,500 hours at local community events…” “We are most proud of how our business has grown in such a short time,” said Liz Harrelson, Co-Owner. “We've had to overcome many challenges with starting our unique business in Modesto. Since we're all from Modesto, we were stubborn about keeping our business here and it has worked out well. We plan to continue to grow and expand throughout California, with a special focus on building the local craft cocktail scene.” Do Good Distillery became a glint in Jim Harrelson’s eye while speaking with this brother-in-law, Paul Katuszonek. In fact, Paul introduced Jim to varying styles of craft whiskey, and this piqued Jim’s natural curiosity about the similarities between making good
whiskey and making good beer. As it turned out, his foundation in homebrewing provided the experience he needed to get started. The name Do Good comes from a quote attributed to Ben Franklin, “You do well, by doing good,” which has served as a guiding principle that perfectly sums up their business and commitment to helping the community. “We pay our employees to pour our spirits at numerous nonprofit events in our local community,” said Harrelson. “In the past year, we've racked up over 1,500 hours at local community events.” Their dedication not only to the community but also to their craft has earned them recognition from Assemblyman Adam Gray as 2017 Small Business of the Year. Their innovation, passion, and sustainable production values— which include shipping their wastewater to the anaerobic digester at the nearby Fiscalini Cheese Company—have more than warranted the award. “Do Good’s commitment to excellence and sustainability has allowed them to provide a quality product as well as encourage growth in a craft industry", said Gray. “It is my distinct honor and privilege to recognize their efforts and name them as the Small Business of the Year.”
