Fantastic Fourth

Fabulous 4th Celebration

By Chris Murphy

For nearly 150 years Modesto has had a 4th of July Parade and that continues in 2022

Modesto has one of the longest running 4th of July Parades in the western USA. Even during the pandemic, there was a scaled down parade through 10th St Plaza with a proclamation from Mayor Brandvold. This year, the parade is back and bigger than ever, on the 4th. This year, the Modesto Kiwanis Clubs will be celebrating the life of Terry McGrath and all he did to boost the 4th of July Parade for many years. Terry is a long time Modestan, active in so many things over the years. He was a Road Rebel back in the late 50s when he was Draggin’ 10th, he was notorious for the high volume of tickets, and knocked over the cones when 10th St was made One-way. Terry was a great family man and over the years, with his McGrath Moving and Storage company, he was able to serve Modesto with the Modesto Jaycees, he was a clamper, and was on the Modesto Centennial committee back in 1970. Terry managed the campaign for John Thurman and ran for Board of Supervisors. Terry was a dedicated member of Modesto Kiwanis and was instrumental in taking over the Modesto 4th of July Parade following the end of the Jaycees. Terry was inducted into the Graffiti USA Legends of the Cruise Walk of Fame and is remembered today for all he has done for our community. Terry is survived by his kids, Stephanie, Michael, Katie & Susan and his wife Pat Glattke and first wife Eva McGrath. This 2022 Modesto 4th of July Parade is dedicated to Terry McGrath. Click on the QR code below to watch a video of Terry talking about Cruising. Please come out and enjoy the parade. I am proud to be one of the announcers of this great annual Modesto tradition along with my friend Ian Riley of KHOP 95 and “Radio” Rick Meyers, legend of Modesto’s KFIV.

Vive Le France!

As America celebrates our independence from Great Britain, we need to take time to remember that it was the support of France, both diplomatically and financially that allowed us to win our independence. The French Monarchy recognized the independence of the United States and George Washington had a good relationship with Marquis de Lafayette and we have been allies since. The French celebrate Bastille Day, Le Fete Nationale, as the beginning of the French Revolution. It will be celebrated July 14, 2022. It is an amazing day in Paris and I have been fortunate to have experienced this day of revolution a few times. Vive le France.

ART VIEW

The Heart of Summer

By Jim Christiansen

Into the heart of Summer, no drought in Art in Modesto. Summer classes and workshops going on at Mistlin Gallery, Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock, Dragonfly Art for Life. First Friday Market will open the month, July 1, an extended 4th of July weekend. Kristy Moore and the BlackHearts artists among the vendors on the hot pavement of Tenth Street. Any business day during the week, you can quickly visit Picasso’s Gourmet Deli and Gallery and enjoy the paintings of Jordi Camps. Meander down to the Chartreuse Muse. On Tenth Street, even Che’root has art on the walls worth a view, and the Century complex adding different looks. In the alley ways, you find the murals. Third Thursday Art Walk is July 21, when the Farmacy will host art crafters. There is always art at Peer Recovery Art Project. Check the hours when open. Around the corner is the Mistlin Gallery. The Triple Take, plein air show continues to July 9. New show, People, Places and Things opens July 12. The World Around us showing that includes retrospective watercolors for sale by the late Dan Petersen continues. Stop in for the show transition Saturday July 9 for the Family Open Studio. The “Expose Yourself to Art” series continues live on Facebook and YouTube, and the Grace Lieberman Cabaret Series will feature Synergy Chamber Quartet July 30 Across J Street, you can find art and creative activities at Beads of Contentment, Preservation Coffee and Tea, and Third Thursday, the artists on the corner at Tresetti’s. Jumping up the Art Walk trail, note that Dragonfly Art for Life has classes, a window full of art, large studio workspace, reasonable membership cost. Not too distant from Café Deva a bit closer to 12th Street, or the art at Papachino’s across the alley. Intrinsic Elements is on this route, always interesting stop during usual business hours. Cross over at 13th Street and note the State Theatre is expanding into a more multi-arts and film venue. Recent art walks have been in different rooms of the historic location as it is now taking on the full corner. Check the Art Walk maps for other locations, as the monthly event including new spots to stop In the 209, but outside Modesto, some art news. The Deaf Puppy Comedy club is set to open in late Fall, on Main Street and Yosemite in Manteca. Chris Teicheira and Nick Larson have an impressive mural proposal for the club in review with the City of Manteca. During Summer 2023 the Ferrari Gallery at the Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock will welcome back two annual exhibitions, “Ready, Set, Show!” and “Carnegie Art Showcase”. Both “Ready, Set Show,” the annual youth art exhibit and “Carnegie Art Showcase,” the annual all media juried exhibition highlight artists of all ages from throughout the Central Valley. The “Carnegie Art Showcase” is often the featured best juried group show in any year. While not currently up in shows downtown, I do have art up in the Mistlin Gallery gift shop and working on a large watercolor to ship off to St. Louis. I am back to drawing music events, most recently at Red Tie Arts concert at Lucca Winery in Ripon.

Next entry, be the Mistlin Autumn Art Festival, hoping to make the cut.

BREW VIEW

Slushies! Slushies! By Christopher Slushies! & Brandilyn Mitchell Hoooooboy,

is it getting hot, friends! We didn’t get much of a spring this year-Mother Nature went straight to summer. Which means a lot of water play, water sports, swimming, ice cream and SLUSHIES! Otterpops and frozen Gogurts are wonderful for the kiddos…but the adults? We’re talking beer slushies! We have divided our efforts and conquered many slushies to find some of the best yummy frozen alcoholic treats in the area! Try them all and let us know your favorite. Post your photos and tag them #modestoview for a chance to be featured in RearView! To find out the hours of operation of each establishment, find each of these awesome places on Facebook and make sure to visit them in person this month. Sip on, friends!

Food Fix Butcher and Baker

938 11th Street, Modesto

Nestled in the heart of Downtown Modesto, this restaurant boasts some seriously delicious food and bevs. Guy Fieri famously visited the associated Food Fix Food Truck and gave his stamp of approval. It’s known for creative sandwiches made from ingredients you don’t always think to pair together, and a brunch menu so delicious you might have to eat here several times to find your favorite plate. Try the Strawberry Margoserita Slush-ee with a scratch-made Strawberry Cheesecake. Divine!

1870 Brewery

911 J Street Modesto

1870 is located at the corner of J and 9th with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. They feature a variety of food trucks for your enjoyment. They often have several different slushies on tap like the Sake Margarita, Blueberry Marshmallow, or Mango. Come back often to have them all. Scrumptious!

The Terrace

521 1/2 McHenry Avenue, Modesto

The little gem is hidden inconspicuously behind a salon on McHenry Avenue. There are a few tables inside but what makes this place so special is the outside atmosphere. Twinkle lights, comfy couches with pillows, wrought iron tables with soft cushions and flowers galore. You won’t find a more beautiful patio in Modesto. Their menu and specials change often, but as of our writing they are serving up this delicious Sangria Mango Strawberry Slushie! Pair it with the pesto bruschetta. Refreshing!

FiveEye Brewing 1920 Foundry Ct Unit B1, Ceres

This brewery boasts a large seating area with cornhole, jenga, and live music. You can really spread out and settle in here. They also have different food trucks and vendors. You can find seltzer slushies here as well as beer slushies giving you a greater variety of flavors. You should come to a yoga class and stay for the slushies! Slushie selections change weekly, but come in flavors like Raspberry Cheesecake, Pina Colada, and Lemon Lime. Come see what’s being served today!

Dying Breed

963 Shepard Court, Suite B, Oakdale

Famous for their massive shaded brewery and huge air conditioners with their stage for live music, you need to make this a stop this month. They are always choosing their best beers to turn into slushies. They’ve slushied their Blackberry 50/50 (sooo good), and have some crazy concoctions you’ll love like the Hefeweizen Pina Colada, Frozen Blue Raspberry Punch or Grape Sour. Featuring food trucks, live music and some super fun themed parties, we think you’ll become big fans of Dying Breed.

Tapped Apple Cider

5648 Pirrone Rd, Salida

You might not think there is a cidery in this industrial park, but we promise this oasis is there and calling your name. They host food vendors, but also allow you to bring your own food in, if you prefer to do that. With rotating flavors like Wild Blueberry, Concert in the Park (Cranberry) and Prickly Pear you can’t go wrong. Crisp!

Necessity is the Mother of Invention

.By Middagh Goodwin

As Frank Zappa once said, “Necessity is the Mothers of Invention”. This is a mantra that I have at least internally shouted time and time again over the years. We are not completely out of the woods as far as Covid is concerned but we can at least see a path that leads to hopefully a brighter future. Events like Modesto Area Music Awards, Music in the Plaza, May the 4th, and Graffiti Con and Porchfest have returned and had good attendance; Edible Extravaganza is scheduled for September 16th. All of these and more were postponed and or cancelled but are coming back slowly but surely. Music has returned to just about all the restaurants and bars that hosted live bands and DJs pre-pandemic and a few new spots have opened over or started hosting music over the last few years including Rancho Fresco Cantina and Retro in downtown Modesto and Contentment Brewing near MJC. I am still holding out for a dedicated midsize music house to open back up in Modesto, ideally for all ages. Along with the local music schools like VMI and GKMusic, this is what we need to breathe life back into the Modesto music scene. A place dedicated to developing new talent alongside some of our area’s great original bands and solo artists and hosting touring acts. We don’t need a Cadillac we just need a Jeep, four walls a stage and a Soundsystem. Build it and I assure you they will come. As some of you may know I host MAMARadio on KCBP 95.5 FM Modesto Community Radio and if you want to hear your music played on the air email mamarecords209@gmail.com. Please make sure that these are clean or edited for radio. MAMA Radio airs every Monday at 5 pm, Friday at 9 pm and Saturday at 6 pm and you never know you might end up in regular rotation on the station. Here at ModestoView, we are dedicated to promoting all the great events that happen in Modesto and surrounding areas so if you have an event in the 209 please email information including time, date and location to mamarecords209@gmail.com so we can get them in our calendar(online and in print.) July’s Music in the Plaza which happens every Friday 7-9 pm will feature a Rockit Gear Showcase on July 1st, Wet Banditos on the 8th, Creole Jazz Kings on the 15th. David Dow & Friends on the 22nd and Overdryve on the 29th. Come on out and grab a good spot on either Fuzio or Ralston’s Goat’s patio or bring your lawn chairs to sit in front of the stage.

Prospect Season

Mingling scenes of explosive drama with moments of fanciful imagery, the play deftly blends its two natures as it moves to its conclusions when, in a theatrically magical moment, illusion and reality achieve a remarkable synthesis.

The State is going to ROCK in July I remember when Y & T was Yesterday & Today. They were rockin the charts and the local radio stations everywhere. Let’s have a red carpet premier!

“Two Million” opens July 23 with local movie director Andrew Chandra as he brings his vision to life on the big screen. Walk the red carpet with the famous cast, crew, and directors followed by the premier, with pictures, autograph signing, Facebook live, KCRA 3 live news coverage, and possibly a special appearance by the Mayor of Modesto. ModestoView will be there live! Do not miss out! Two Million is a story about a rich family’s son that gets kidnapped. When a family partnership deal goes wrong with a rival in the export industry an unexpected debt must be paid in full.

July 23 - Red Carpet at 6; film at 7 p.m. Tix: $10

Also, at the State will be a very cool movie about the Chelsea Hotel in New York City. I was just recently in the Village and walked by the Chelsea, that was home to rocks legends, artists, authors and actors for decades from Mark Twain, Jack Kerouac, Ramones, Robert Mapplethorpe, Andy Warhol, Velvet Underground, Bob Dylan, Madonna and so much more. It was under construction and has just recently reopened. This movie will premier in the Jewell, July 8 -14

The Amtraker's Guide To The Gallery (Volume Two)

Picking up where I left off last month. My train travels across America are filled with music and unique food and outdoor beauty, and sometimes involve accompanying songwriters on tour, as will be the case again soon. Let’s check out another cluster of cool destinations worth a visit. Sandpoint, ID, about an hour from the Canadian border, offers lakefront hiking and an artsy downtown area. Cedar Street Bridge Public Market which spans the creek is wonderful to wander. Panhandle Cone & Coffee serves up ice cream insanity with flavors like bourbon & honeycomb and buttermilk-huckleberry. Recommended local music: Americana songwriter Patrice Webb, who appeared in the closing lineup of an early year of my acoustic fest. Patrice has won or placed in numerous song contests over the past decade, in genre categories ranging from country to spiritual to jazz & blues. Santa Fe, NM is notable for its landscapes and architecture and art. The Canyon Road walking tour crams 100+ galleries, shops and restaurants into a one-half mile. Plus, there’s an installation of Meow Wolf to be found in town - the sprawling, surreal interactive art experience. Recommended local music: D Henry Fenton, who recently migrated there by way of Australia and L.A. Henry’s a cool cat making bluesy folk music with a vintage rock & roll vibe and is always wonderful to work with. Boston, MA & Providence, RI. I’ll combine these since they are only an hour’s journey apart. Boston is among the best new cities I visited in 2021. Follow the red, white and blue brick road: the Freedom Trail winding past numerous historic sites over a couple of miles between Boston Common and the good ship U.S.S. Constitution. Do some more naval gazing at the Tea Party ships docked in the harbor. Bell In Hand Tavern has been around for over 225 years and was frequented by old-time patriots like Paul Revere & Samuel Adams. They serve the best fried chicken sandwich I ever had. Moving down the coast, Providence is a charming city along the river. I was there mainly to catch up with Alida McKeon. You’ll recognize the name.....or you should. Alida was a grand prize winner at the Valley Talent Project, a graduate of Berklee College of Music, and one of the greatest young artists our area has produced. Make the time to catch Alida jamming on her ukulele or with a jazz band around Providence or up in Boston. A local musical highlight of July is Opera Modesto’s annual SOI (Summer Opera Institute) where young vocalists are mentored in a variety of topics, culminating in a public concert slated for Friday or Saturday 7/29 or 7/30. My tour-managing duties force me to miss the fun this time around, but you can find more details at www.operamodesto.org. It’s always a lovely concert, and if you’re able to attend, say hi to talented local musical theatre star Cossette Asenjo for me - she’s the deeply deserving Modesto Unplugged sponsoree to attend this year’s program. Stay cool and stay cultured this summer!
