Welcome to the 2012-2013 season at the Modlin Center for the Arts. In this blockbuster season, we are proud to present an eclectic array of talent, including a diverse mix of American Roots music and global offerings. We are also proud to continue offering unparalleled access through pre-concert discussions; lectures and demonstrations; master classes; meet-andgreets; ModlinArts After Words, our post-show question-and-answer sessions; and the ModlinArts Artist Voices Series. We launch the 2012-2013 season and our ModlinArts Concert Series with bluegrass legend Del McCoury. For more than five decades, McCoury has enthralled hardcore fans and bluegrass novices alike. The series continues with incredible talent from across the globe including the raucous dhol n’ brass band Red Baraat, flamenco star Buika, ukulele phenomenon Jake Shimabukuro, and rising fado star Ana Moura. Also included in the Concert Series is an all-star line-up including Dr. John and the Blind Boys of Alabama, Dailey & Vincent, Dr. Ralph Stanley, Judy Collins, and the Lovin’ Spoonful’s John Sebastian with “Dawg Music” creator David Grisman. This season, we celebrate the genius of pioneering composer Philip Glass. Through films, lectures, and concerts — including a discussion and a performance with Philip Glass — the Modlin Center will explore the life and works of this influential composer. Other remarkable performers in our Classical Series include renowned pianist Simone Dinnerstein; Modlin favorite, the Shanghai Quartet; baritone Matthew Worth; our Grammy®-winning ensemble-in-residence eighth blackbird; the Takács Quartet; and the Ebène Quartet. The ModlinArts Jazz series features guitar prodigy Julian Lage, followed by 2009 Thelonious Monk Competition winner bassist Ben Williams. The series also features the Birdland Big Band, directed by drummer Tommy Igoe, and the salsa sounds of trombonist Chris Washburne’s S.Y.O.T.O.S. with special guests, the UR Jazz Ensemble. For families, eighth blackbird will take the stage for an exciting children’s performance in our annual Family Arts Day Celebration followed by the high-tech Lightwire Theatre performances of The Ugly Duckling and The Tortoise and the Hare. The ModlinArts Dance Series will feature five celebrated troupes including Jessica Lang Dance, Philadanco, Mark Morris Dance Group, Black Grace, and the Russian National Ballet performing The Sleeping Beauty. In addition, we are offering two theatre classics: L.A. Theatre Works’ Pride and Prejudice, and The Acting Company’s Of Mice and Men. Other highlights include comedian, author, and actor Mike Birbiglia, the acrobatics of Cirque Chinois, the kung fu mastery of the Shaolin Warriors, the Pipes and Drums of the Black Watch, flamenco guitarist Paco Peña, and Les 7 Doigts de la Main’s mind-altering cirque show PSY. Films and live broadcasts have become a staple of the Modlin Center. In addition to continuing the National Theatre of London’s NT Live HD broadcasts, which brings the best of London theatre to Richmond, the Modlin Center is proud to be a host site for the new independent film tour On Screen/ In Person. This series will explore the connections between the arts and humanities and will feature question-and-answer sessions with the filmmakers following each screening. Our season would not be complete without the extraordinary talents of the University of Richmond students and faculty. We encourage you to enjoy outstanding performances by the University of Richmond Department of Theatre and Dance, the free concert series provided by the Department of Music, the stunning visual arts exhibits and lectures offered by the University of Richmond Museums, and the events offered by the Department of Art and Art History.

Pioneering Brooklyn dhol n’ brass band Red Baraat has made a name for itself as one of the best live bands playing anywhere in the world. Led by dhol player Sunny Jain, the nine-piece band – comprised of dhol (a double-sided, barrelshaped, North Indian drum slung over one shoulder) drumset, percussion, sousaphone, and five horns – melds the infectious North Indian rhythm Bhangra with a host of sounds, namely funk, go-go, Latin, and jazz. Simply put, Sunny Jain and Red Baraat have created and defined an explosive sound entirely their own. Due to the potential for overwhelming fun, the Modlin Center is offering both seated tickets and standing orchestra pit passes for this event.

Under Dr. John’s musical direction, these two icons of American music will trace a legacy that began with Dr. John’s appearance on the Blind Boys’ Grammy® Awardwinning album Down in New Orleans, and continues with the Blind Boys’ appearance on Dr. John’s upcoming Louis Armstrong tribute album. Preserved in the cultural amber of remote Appalachia, this terse, forlorn sound is the bedrock of Stanley’s wholly unique style. But don’t mistake an ancient voice for ancient ways. Stanley tours and performs with the vigor and elan of a rock star, and over the past six decades has sculpted an unprecedented career that has included a Grammy® Award, a National Medal of Arts, and countless IBMA awards and nominations. The Seldom Scene remains at the forefront of progressive and traditional bluegrass with tight harmonies, a love affair with melody, and impeccable musicianship. The band is made up of Dudley Connell (guitar), Ben Eldridge (banjo), Lou Reid (mandolin), Fred Travers (Dobro®), and Ronnie Simpkins (bass) – with all members contributing to the vocal sound that earned them a Grammy® nomination for their 2007 release Scenechronized. Jim Lauderdale is a multi-talented performer and songwriter, with successes in both country and bluegrass music. An Evening with Judy Collins Fri. March 1, 2013 • 7:30pm

Camp Concert Hall, Booker Hall of Music $40 In a career that spans more than 50 years, Judy Collins has thrilled audiences worldwide with her signature blend of interpretive folk songs and contemporary themes. At age 13, she made her public debut performing Mozart, but it was the music of artists such as Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, as well as the traditional songs of the folk revival, that sparked her love of lyrics. She soon moved away from the classical piano and began her lifelong love of the guitar. Collins has continued an impressive musical career with an extensive catalog from every decade since the 1960s.

With her captivating interpretations, luxuriant voice, and passionate stage presence, Moura has earned an international fan base drawn in by her ability to cross over into other styles while retaining fado’s deep emotional commitment. Moura honors the traditions of her native idiom while contributing to its expansion through collaborations with such artists as Mick Jagger and Prince.

John Sebastian & David Grisman Sat. April 27, 2013 • 7:30pm

Camp Concert Hall, Booker Hall of Music $36 The musical history of John Sebastian and David Grisman dates back to their college days in the 1960s at New York University in the heyday of the Greenwich Village folk revival. The two made their first recording together as members of the Even Dozen Jug Band. After legendary solo careers – Sebastian as the lead singer of one of America’s most popular bands, the Lovin’ Spoonful and Grisman as the father of the acoustic music revolution with his genre-defying “Dawg music” – the pair have reunited to create “Satisfied,” a stunning collection of acoustic duets featuring traditional folk tunes, blues, instrumentals, and original songs. Join the Modlin Center as we close out the 2012-2013 season with a post-show reception in the Booth Lobby.

His early virtuosity and success made him the subject of the 1997 Academy Award®-nominated documentary Jules at Eight. Lage’s 2009 debut album Sounding Point was nominated for a Grammy® Award for “Best Contemporary Jazz Album” in 2010. Lage will be joined by multi-Grammy® nominated drummer and composer Eric Harland, critically acclaimed bassist Jorge Roeder and saxophonist and composer Dan Blake.

S.Y.O.T.O.S. (an acronym for See You On The Other Side, coined by Chris Washburne) was founded in 1992 by Washburne – a trombonist, studio musician, and Columbia University faculty member who has performed with artist such as the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Tito Puente, Justin Timberlake, Marc Anthony, Celine Dion, David Byrne, Bjork, They Might Be Giants, Gloria Estefan, and more. Camp Concert Hall, Booker Hall of Music $5 Koyaanisqatsi, a Hopi Indian word meaning “life out of balance” was Godfrey Reggio’s debut as a film director and the first film in the QATSI trilogy, the informal name given to a series of films produced by Reggio and scored by Philip Glass. Created between 1975 and 1982, the film is an apocalyptic vision of the collision of two different worlds – urban life and technology versus the environment. Mirroring the movement of the images, the musical score is considered one of Philip Glass’ best known works. This work, more than any other, expresses the profundity of his thought and the eloquence of his artistic vision” – Philip Glass Central to the “modern” art movement of the 20th century, Jean Cocteau’s work used questions of art, immortality, and the creative process as the subjects of his work. Presented as a simple fairy tale, La Belle et La Bête is an extremely thoughtful and subtle reflection on the very nature of an artist’s creative process. One of the most celebrated and unique works in Philip Glass’ career is his live interpretation of La Belle et La Bête. Originally conceived as part of a trilogy of stage productions celebrating the work of Jean Cocteau, La Belle et La Bête is Glass’ most challenging experiment in synchronized music with film. For this production, Glass removed the film’s original dialogue track and Georges Auric score, replacing it with his own score played live by the Philip Glass Ensemble, with the dialogue sung by live singers and synchronized with the actors in the film. Philadanco is celebrated for its innovation, creativity, and preservation of predominantly African-American traditions in dance. The evening’s program will include a new piece by North Philadelphia native Rennie Harris of Rennie Harris Puremovement (RHPM) entitled Wake Up. Highlighting the celebration of life through our everyday communal ties, Wake Up explores the Chicago style of house dance vocabulary set against a backdrop of Afro-jazz and funk music. Funding for ‘Wake Up’ was provided by the National Dance Project. On Screen/In Person will present six monthly screenings September through April. Events surrounding the screenings will include workshops, discussions, and master classes with the filmmaker.

The Royal National Theatre is one of Great Britainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s premier theatre companies. Founded in 1963, the National Theatre presents an eclectic program that includes Shakespeare and other international classic drama, as well as new productions by contemporary playwrights. In 2009, the National Theatre created National Theatre Live which broadcasts the best of British theatre to movie screens around the world. Screenings are shown in high definition and utilize dynamic camera work to provide an engrossing viewer experience. Under the artistic direction of Anne Van Gelder, the University Dancers will present powerful new works choreographed by Kanji Segawa (Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater) and Alexandra Damiani (Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet) as part of the University of Richmond Department of Theatre and Dance’s New Voices in Dance project. Inspired by the athleticism and physicality inherent in dance, Segawa manipulates dancers in space architecturally creating dances that are energetic while preserving a sense of soul and drama. Damiani’s choreographic voice reflects her exploration of the notions of separation of the body and of identity inside the group. Her creative process unites her personal choreographic vision with the dancers’ own stories. Her work, noted for its broken lines, isolated parts, and group dynamics is fused with a progressive movement vocabulary. The concert will also feature compelling works choreographed by UR’s newest dance faculty members Alicia Diaz (formerly with Complexions Contemporary Ballet) and Matthew Thornton, local guest choreographers, and students.

August-April, the box office is open from 10am-5pm, Monday through Friday, and beginning 90 minutes prior to performances. Summer hours are from 2pm-5pm, Monday through Friday. Each individual must have a ticket to gain access to the performance hall. Discounted tickets are available for members; subscribers; senior citizens age 62 and older; children age 12 and under; groups of 20 or more; University of Richmond (UR) employees and students; Osher members; and non-university students with a student ID. Discounts for UR alumni are available for University Players and Dancers productions. Multiple discounts do not apply. Safety and Disruptions.
