MODLIN CENTER FOR THE ARTS

24/25

Welcome

Welcome

to the 2024-2025

Season at the University of Richmond’s Modlin Center for the Arts!

This year the Modlin Center has expanded its commitment and support of artists creating new work, with a diversity of voices exploring the nature of our contemporary lives and global connections. Three Modlin commissions and two world premiere performances highlight our expanded support of artists this year.

Please join us in September for the world premiere of What Belongs to You. This 90-minute opera was composed by David T. Little, based on Garth Greenwell’s novel. Grammy Award-winning tenor Karim Sulayman performs with chamber orchestra Alarm Will Sound, and renowned choreographer Mark Morris directs.

In February, acclaimed tabla master Zakir Hussain joins Third Coast Percussion for the premiere performance of his composition Murmurs in Time. In April, Twyla Tharp Dance celebrates 60 years, including a new piece created with Third Coast Percussion. More details are inside.

These three works have commissioning support from Modlin. These artists, and many others, have committed to expansive residencies at the University of Richmond to engage directly with students, faculty, and programs across our campus and within the Richmond community.

Our 2024-2025 season includes compelling performances and collaborative engagements presented by our visiting artists, students, faculty, and academic partners. Modlin also returns to the Carpenter Theatre at Dominion Energy Center with two spectacular offerings. I can’t wait to see you throughout the season!

What Belongs to You, an opera for tenor and chamber orchestra

THU 26 SEP 2024 7:30PM SAT 28 SEP 2024 7:30PM

ALICE JEPSON THEATRE

What Belongs to You is a new opera by David T. Little, adapted from Garth Greenwell's stunning debut novel of desire and its consequences. With lyric intensity and startling eroticism, this indelible story explores the ways our pasts and cultures, our scars and shames can shape who we are and determine how we love. Tenor Karim Sulayman portrays the protagonist over a lush score performed by chamber orchestra Alarm Will Sound. Helmed by famed director and choreographer Mark Morris, this presentation is a world premiere and Modlin Center commission. This project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Las Cafeteras

FRI 18 OCT 2024 7:30PM

CAMP CONCERT HALL

Las Cafeteras delivers powerful storytelling and honors the past by electrifying traditional instruments, fusing Mexican folk with electronic dance beats. With their third studio album, A Night in Nepantla, they explore the concept of “Nepantla”, a Nahuatl word meaning "in-between" or "in the middle". It serves as a metaphor for the lived experiences of people who exist at the intersections of multiple, often-conflicting cultural, ethnic, and social identities. Lead vocalist Denise Carlos reflects, “We welcome our fans into a different world, and it’s a profound experience for all of us. We create a space where we can connect, share, and celebrate our common humanity."

Circa, Duck Pond

THU 10 OCT 2024 7:30PM ALICE JEPSON THEATRE

Feathers will fly in Circa's exuberant take on Swan Lake. The world's most romantic ballet is reimagined as a circus spectacular, full of the company’s signature physicality, cheeky humor, and a thoroughly contemporary energy. There are sumptuous aerials, jaw-dropping acrobatics and of course feathers! This sweeping tale of swans and hapless princes sparkles with quirky touches like the sequined flipper-wearing duck army and a burlesque black swan. Touching, funny and utterly entertaining, Duck Pond is a tale of identity and finding your true self. This performance is created for all ages.

Family Arts Day: Latin Ballet of Virginia, Fiesta del Sol

SUN 20 OCT 2024 | ART ACTIVITIES 1PM | SHOW 3PM | FREE and family-friendly for all ages

ALICE JEPSON THEATRE

Latin Ballet of Virginia’s Fiesta Del Sol (Party of the Sun) celebrates the culture and traditions of the Caribbean with its mix of influences rooted in its rich heritage and shaped by its long history of colonization. Fiesta del Sol dances to the rhythms of Rumba, Salsa, Calypso, Merengue, Cumbia, Plena, Mambo, Danson, Soca, Bachata, Reggae, Reggaeton, and Bomba, with live music by Kevin Davis & Ban Caribe Ensemble.

The Soul Rebels

THU 31 OCT 2024 7:30PM | CAMP CONCERT HALL | PRE-SHOW ARTIST TALK 6:30PM

Brass sensation The Soul Rebels started with an idea - to expand on the pop music they loved on the radio and the New Orleans brass tradition they grew up on. They took that tradition and blended funk and soul with elements of hip hop, jazz, and rock, all within the style of a modernized and contemporary brass band. The eight-member collective continues to chart new territory with topnotch musicianship and songs that celebrate peace, love, and soul.

Tessa Lark (violin), Joshua Roman (cello), and Edgar Meyer (double bass)

FRI 8 NOV 2024 7:30PM

CAMP CONCERT HALL

Violinist Tessa Lark is consistently praised for her astounding range of sounds, technical agility, and musical elegance. She is also a highly acclaimed fiddler in the tradition of her native Kentucky. Cello soloist and composer Joshua Roman is known for his “effortlessly expressive tone” (New York Times) and innovative cross-genre collaborations. Bassist and composer Edgar Meyer is hailed by The New Yorker as "...the most remarkable virtuoso in the relatively un-chronicled history of his instrument.” These incredible musicians join us on their first tour together, performing string trios Meyer composed between 1986 and 1988, as well as a newly commissioned work.

Miguel Zenón & Luis Perdomo, El Arte del Bolero

THU 21 NOV 2024 7:30PM

CAMP CONCERT HALL

Two jazz luminaries—saxophonist Miguel Zenón and pianist Luis Perdomo—join forces to pay tribute to bolero, a genre originating in Cuba known as the quintessential Latin American romantic song. With impeccable improvisational instincts and natural harmony, the pair perform music they have carried with them since childhood, finding a common language to grab onto and explore together. These songs are “from the times of our parents and grandparents that somehow stuck around long enough for us to get to know them and truly love them. They are all as essential to our development as the music of jazz greats, but perhaps even more familiar… These songs are part of us.”

Cécile McLorin Salvant

FRI 6 DEC 2024 7:30PM

CAMP CONCERT HALL

As a composer, singer, and visual artist, Cécile McLorin Salvant curates a journey of compelling narratives, unexpected twists, and humor. French and Haitian heritage influence her musical language and style, imbuing it with captivating rhythm and remarkable depth. “Apart from Salvant’s singular voice and compelling musical arrangements, it’s her courage and imagination for such heady projects that set her apart from any contemporary singer, even when she is well beyond the usual fare associated with “jazz vocalists,” a term which severely understates her immense genre-bending talents.” — Glide Magazine. Sponsored by William and Pamela O'Connor.

Manual Cinema, Frankenstein

SAT 1 FEB 2025 7:30PM

ALICE JEPSON THEATRE

POST-SHOW ON STAGE TOUR AND Q&A

Love, loss, and creation merge unexpectedly in Manual Cinema’s thrilling version of the classic Gothic tale Frankenstein. The real-life and fictional narratives of author Mary Shelley, Victor Frankenstein, and Frankenstein’s monster expose how family, community, and education shape personhood—or destroy it by their absence. The Chicago-based performance collective imaginatively combines shadow puppetry, cinematic techniques, sound effects, and live music to create a haunting show like nothing else you’ve ever seen.

Recommended for ages 8 and up. There are loud sounds, flashing lights and haze. We understand that certain types of content can be triggering for some viewers. Please be aware that this production contains a depiction of infant death.

Billy Childs Quartet with Sean Jones, The Winds of Change

FRI 7 FEB 2025 7:30PM

CAMP CONCERT HALL

Billy Childs is one of the foremost American composers of his era and one of our most dazzling jazz pianists. As a composer, Childs is a master of two genres: jazz and modern classical music. Between writing violin concertos and chamber music for classical ensembles, he records Grammy-winning jazz albums and plays the world’s leading clubs, concert halls, and festivals with his exceptional jazz groups. This performance welcomes his quartet, featuring internationally recognized trumpeter, composer, educator, and activist Sean Jones.

Leyla McCalla

THU 13 FEB 2025 7:30PM

With a stunning mastery of cello, banjo, and guitar, and as a multilingual singer and songwriter, she produces a distinctive sound that reflects the union of her roots and experience. McCalla returns for her third year as Artist in Residence with University of Richmond’s Department of Music.

Third Coast Percussion with Zakir Hussain

FRI 21 FEB 2025 7:30PM

CAMP CONCERT HALL

PRE-SHOW ARTIST TALK 6:30PM

Third Coast Percussion commissioned Murmurs in Time, a major new work by Zakir Hussain that blends the sounds of tabla with a classically trained percussion ensemble. A shared spirit of collaboration and curiosity reverberates among the five artists who will share the stage for the first time as part of this special double-bill concert. "Hussain’s mastery of his percussion instrument has taken it to a new level, transcending cultures and national borders. “If there is such a thing as a tabla superstar, Indian virtuoso Zakir Hussain is it…” — Chicago Tribune. This project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Kardeş Türküler

SAT 1 MAR 2025 7:30PM

CAMP CONCERT HALL

Kardeş Türküler is a music project that was founded in 1993 by a group of students in the Folklore Club of the Boğaziçi University in Istanbul. They perform folk songs and dances of Anatolia, Thrace, and Mesopotamia in their original languages, paying special attention to their cultural contexts. The group is known for their use of traditional Anatolian, Middle Eastern, and Balkan instruments, and they draw on the rich, varied musical cultures that are the band members' respective birthrights.

Kronos Quartet with Peni Candra Rini

FRI 21 MAR 2025 7:30PM

CAMP CONCERT HALL

PRE-SHOW ARTIST TALK 6:30PM

Since its founding in San Francisco 50 years ago, when the form was largely centered on long-established, Western European traditions, Kronos has been at the forefront of revolutionizing the string quartet into a living art form that responds to the people and issues of our time.

Integral to Kronos’ work is a series of long-running commissioning collaborations with hundreds of composers worldwide, including Indonesian gamelan vocalist Peni Candra Rini who joins as a special guest. In its most ambitious commissioning effort yet, its nonprofit organization Kronos Performing Arts Association has recently completed Kronos Fifty for the Future. Through this initiative, Kronos has commissioned—and distributed online for free—50 new string quartet works written by composers from around the world. One of those new works will be presented in the evening’s program.

Tanya Tagaq

THU 27 MAR 2025 7:30PM

CAMP CONCERT HALL

From Ikaluktutiak (Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, Canada), Tanya Tagaq is an improvisational singer, avantgarde composer, and bestselling author. In its many forms, her art challenges static ideas of genre and culture and contends with themes of environmentalism, human rights, and post-colonial issues. Tagaq stresses the importance of considering her work in the context of contemporary—not traditional—art. Although her music is decidedly modern and technically intricate, this statement is not just about sound but about deep-rooted assumptions about indigenous culture in general.

Simone Dinnerstein, piano

FRI 11 APR 2025 7:30PM

CAMP CONCERT HALL

The Washington Post calls American pianist Simone Dinnerstein “an artist of strikingly original ideas and irrefutable integrity.” This spellbinding performer has played in venues from Carnegie Hall to Seoul Arts Center but remains committed to reaching audiences who don’t often hear classical music. She has also performed recitals in correctional facilities, and created a program called Bachpacking, carrying a digital keyboard to elementary school classrooms. In a world where music is everywhere, Dinnerstein hopes it can still be transformative.

CARPENTER THEATRE

PRE-SHOW ARTIST TALK 6:30PM

Step Afrika!’s signature work The Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence charts the story of African American migrants moving from the rural South to the industrial North to escape Jim Crow, racial oppression, and lynchings in the early 1900s. Inspired by Lawrence’s iconic 60-panel painting, “The Migration Series” (1940-41), the award-winning dance company uses the images, color palette, and motifs in the series to tell this astonishing story through pulsating rhythms and visually stunning movement. Step Afrika! blends percussive dance styles practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities; traditional African dances; and an array of contemporary dance and art forms into a cohesive, compelling artistic experience.
