The very best in music, theatre, dance, + visual arts
As an acclaimed cultural institution, the Modlin Center for the Arts believes in supporting a wide range of art, from the traditional to the unconventional; in supporting artists that generate those works in an effort to create immersive and adventurous experiences for audiences; and in providing and encouraging educational experiences for student and public communities. The 2014-2015 Season provides an eclectic mixture of traditional and cutting-edge works that will promote a range of responses, from thought-provoking discussions to smiling, laughing, and dancing in the aisles. We launch our season on September 7 for a fun-filled day on the Westhampton Green, with the All Brass Kick-Off Bash, a high-octane, globally inspired brass show featuring Rebirth Brass Band, Red Baraat, Slavic Soul Party and No BS! Brass. Additional highlights this season include Alonzo King LINES Ballet, MacArthur genius award-winning choreographer Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion, Compagnie Käfig, and a new work from Richmond favorites MOMIX in our Dance Series; Marc Broussard, An Evening with Chris Thile and Edgar Meyer, The Gibson Brothers with Liz Longley, and Kathy Mattea in our Concert Series; and a host of spectacular events in our Jazz Series, Artist Voices Series, Family and Young Audiences Series, and Theatre, Comedy, and Special Event Series. In addition, beginning this season, the Modlin Center will proudly present the Bolshoi Ballet in addition to the National Theatre Live in our Broadcast Series. As always, be sure to explore the outstanding events and exhibits presented by the University of Richmond Departments of Music and Theatre and Dance and the UR Museums. The Modlin Center ventures downtown for a variety of events this season as well. Modlin Dowtown events include The National Acrobats of the People’s Republic of China performing Cirque Peking, the Ukrainian subversive folk-punk of DakhaBrakha, Zap Mama and Antibalas, the Perth Theatre Company’s The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer, the Russian National Ballet’s Cinderella, An Evening with Ira Glass, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. For this year’s University of Richmond Tucker-Boatwright Festival of Literature and Arts, the UR Department of Art and Art History and the University Museums have teamed up to present a series of programs, exhibitions, educational opportunities, and a major, site-specific creative project focused on the topics of landscape and land use. The programs and projects will engage the campus community in examining how landscape and land use have been defined throughout history and how we wrestle with the tensions and conflicts inherent in the topics today. As part of our season, the Modlin Center will presents events focused on this theme including a lecture from the author of The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History and New Yorker writer Elizabeth Kolbert, a lecture and concert with acclaimed singer Kathy Mattea, and many more. These events will be noted throughout the brochure with the logo below. Finally, we wish to thank all of our Modlin Members for their continued support. Your generous donations make it possible to present these wonderful performances, artists, and educational programs. Best,

eighth blackbird
Presented in partnership with the Department of Music.
It's a musical dream team: three-time Grammy-winning instrumental sextet eighth blackbird, and New York-based all-star composer sextet Sleeping Giant. The challenge: create six pieces that together comprise an evening-length work, Hand Eye. Each sextet features a member of eighth blackbird, with one "giant" composing and one "bird" highlighted, creating an evening fizzing with the alchemy of twelve unique personalities. Rule for composers: mold a dramatic arc through the evening. Rule for the ensemble: perform this sextet of bird-songs entirely from memory. You will hear the thrilling result at eighth blackbird's spring concert!
PROGRAM: Ted Hearne, Andrew Norman, Chris Cerrone, Timo Andres, Robert Honstein and Jacob Cooper: Hand Eye (2014) Join the Modlin Center for Modlin Arts After Words, a post-show question-and-answer session with members of eighth blackbird.

Under the leadership of director and choreographer Mourad Merzouki, Company Käfig / CCN Créteil et Val-De-Marne has become an international phenomenon, touring the world with sold-out performances and rave reviews. Merzouki, himself a major figure on the hip-hop scene for more than two decades, created Correria and Agwa after an inspiring encounter with eleven dancers from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. These young dancers, whose individual stories, passion for dance, and fervent determination resonated with Merzouki, blend the powerful components of samba, hip-hop, and capoeira to create an athletic dance style that is fluid, beautiful, and surprising. Correria plunges us into a frantic, hectic race just like the one that governs our daily lives. Agwa is all about water – the most vital component of the human body, a precious natural resource to be preserved, and a symbol of renewal.

kyle abraham, artistic director THU. - FRI. MARCH 19 - 20, 2015 • 7:30PM Alice Jepson Theatre • Reserved Seating $38 Premiered just months ago at New York Live Arts, the Modlin Center brings new works by celebrated choreographer and 2013 MacArthur Fellow Kyle Abraham and his company Abraham.In.Motion to Richmond audiences. Vogue describes Abraham’s choreography as having an “avant-garde aesthetic, an original and politically minded downtown sensibility that doesn’t distinguish between genres but freely draws on a vocabulary that is as much Merce and Martha as it is Eadweard Muybridge and Michael Jackson.”
Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion
Performed over two nights, The Watershed and When the Wolves Came In pay homage to the 150-year anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 20-year anniversary of the abolishment of apartheid in South Africa. The powerful themes inherent in these historical milestones – in tandem with Abraham’s choreography and music by Max Roach, Robert Glasper, and Otis Redding – connect ideas postured in a crosscultural exploration of freedom and its progression from the 1960s to present day.

The play begins in 1959 as a “negro” family moves into a white neighborhood. In Act Two, circa 2009, we visit the same house as gentrification sets in and the roles are swapped. Have things really changed? Internationally acclaimed, award-winning theatre director Chuck Mike follows up his 2011 production of A Raisin in the Sun by staging Bruce Norris’ superlative sequel on the Modlin stage. By investigating de Rore’s dramatic musical representation of a figure who would become a great operatic heroine, Owens sets the agenda for a re-examination of his entire oeuvre in new ways.

Schola Cantorum and eighth blackbird present the premiere performance of Dominick DiOrio's new work An Equal Humanity, which is a dramatic portrayal of Khalil Gibran’s pessimistic moral tale, The Criminal. As all good fables go, this one leaves the observer with a stern warning: the smallest seeds of selfishness and callous avarice can easily fester and multiply into the most demonic of atrocities. This poem is paired with two others: Tennyson’s Beautiful City, which serves as a monolithic frame for the work; and Katharine Lee Bates’ A Song of Riches, a simple meditation on life’s most valuable currency. This work was commissioned by the University of Richmond's Department of Music with support from the UR Cultural Affairs Committee.
