The very best in music, theatre, dance, & visual arts

can art change the world? This year, in addition to our season presentations, the Modlin Center for the Arts will explore how art influences society – politically, technologically, and for social and environmental change. In addition to the Modlin Arts Series, the University of Richmond’s Department of Theatre and Dance, Department of Music, and the University Museums have added to this journey with thought-provoking productions, guest speakers, exhibitions, and student performances.

M

Activist art attempts to challenge and push traditional boundaries as defined by those in positions of power. Many have made their art as expressions of activism – creating works to inspire, provoke, and engage. Artists create work to articulate the thoughts and ideas of and for those around them, and therefore provide a tool to inspire movement toward change. The 2013-2014 season spotlights many artists acting as catalysts for change, examines the process for change, and explores the results of that change. Learn from Anna Deavere Smith’s Artist Voices presentation, Engaging the World: The Role of the Artist in Society; Mike Daisey’s All Stories are Fiction; and Ethan Lipton and his Orchestra’s No Place to Go. Experience global activists such as Fatoumata Diawara and Bassekou Kouyate and the blues of Taj Mahal and Vusi Mahlasela. Be inspired by Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company and SITI Company’s A Rite. Throughout the brochure, Arts and Activism* events are noted. During the season, we will also present artists such as Emanuel Ax, Venice Baroque Orchestra, King’s Singers, Steep Canyon Rangers, Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas, John Pizzarelli Swing 7, Branford Marsalis, and more. We encourage you to explore all that is offered – the serious, the sublime, and the humorous; from up-and-coming and world-renowned artists; to our own incredibly talented students. Welcome to the 2013-2014 season at the Modlin Center for the Arts. Best,

Since their beginning as a band of college friends in 2000, the Steep Canyon Rangers have become a bluegrass force. With multiple top honors from the International Bluegrass Music Association, and a Grammy for their 2013 album Nobody Knows You, the Rangers have taken their powered smooth vocals, smart songwriting, ferocious instrumentals, and jaw-dropping harmony to places beyond their North Carolina roots while still staying true to the old soul of their genre. The Rangers have performed on Late Night with David Letterman, The Colbert Report, and Austin City Limits, as well as headlining major festivals such as MerleFest and Bonnaroo, often fronted by actor and acclaimed banjoist Steve Martin. Joy Kills Sorrow brings a modern sensibility to an old-world sound, channeling the prodigious talents of its individual members into elegant arrangements and well-crafted songs. Joy Kills Sorrow gracefully merges influences as diverse as folk, rock, pop, and jazz while paying homage to its bluegrass roots.

Fragile, lovelorn and passionate, Colombine is caught in a painful triangle: longing for Harlequin, lusted after by Pierrot. Amy Beth Kirsten’s Colombine’s Paradise Theatre, co-commissioned by the Modlin Center for the Arts, is a dark musical fairy tale of love and death, dream and delusion. Directed by New York choreographer Mark DeChiazza, the six musicians of the multiple Grammy-winning ensemble eighth blackbird play, speak, sing, whisper, growl, and mime, breathing theatrical life into these rich commedia dell’arte characters. Complementing eighth blackbird’s new theatrical work, Agua Dulce Dance Theater, directed by UR Dance faculty Alicia Diaz and Matthew Thornton, premieres passing through, a new work based on the human experience of change relative to five elemental stages of life. The piece is a collaboration with Richmond- and New York Citybased guest artists in music, video, and dance, including UR Music faculty Andrew McGraw.

Anna Deavere Smith Engaging the World: The Role of the Artist in Society WED. OCTOBER 16, 2013 • 7:30pm Camp Concert Hall, Booker Hall of Music • $40 Actress, playwright, professor, and social critic Anna Deavere Smith has been hailed by Newsweek as “the most exciting individual in American Theatre.” While perhaps best known for her roles in The West Wing and Showtime’s Nurse Jackie, Smith’s work in theater has been a central part of her artistic life. When granted the prestigious MacArthur Award, her work was described as “a blend of theatrical art, social commentary, journalism, and intimate reverie.” Smith’s theater combines the journalistic technique of interviewing her subjects with the art of interpreting their words through performance. In this presentation, she will blur the line between lecture and theatre, as she steps away from the podium and transforms herself into an astonishing number of characters, both legendary and everyday.

Anna Deavere Smith

She is a recipient of the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, two Tony nominations, a Pulitzer nomination, two Obies, a Drama Desk Award, and numerous other honors. She has been featured in several films, among them The American President, The Human Stain, Life Support, and Rachel Getting Married. Threshold

activism Directed by Chuck Mike | Music by Juwon Ogungbe | Costumes by Johann Stegmeir | Lighting by Maja White | Set Design by Reed West THU.-SAT. APRIL 17-19, 2014 • 7:30pm | SUN. APRIL 20, 2014 • 2pm Alice Jepson Theatre • $15 Threshold is a new play with music and movement inspired by the classic Nigerian novel The Palm Wine Drinkard by Amos Tutuola. Originally written in the 1940s The Palm Wine Drinkard is the story of a privileged young village based lay-about who spends his days drinking palm wine with his friends. When the man who makes his palm wine dies, the Drinkard goes on a journey through the mythical Yoruba lands of the dead, unborn and unknown in search of his tapper, encountering terrifying, fantastical and transforming experiences along the way. Growing up through the journey, the Palm Wine Drinkard gradually learns to take responsibility for himself, his family and finally his community. Often likened as a cross between The Wizard of Oz and Orpheus, this fun-filled phantasmagorical tale is leverly retold through the life of a modern-day Drinkard, an ambitious young Nigerian comic book writer based in Lagos. Writer Oladipo Agboluaje offers a radical new perspective that places Africans as the subject of an international worldview, rather than the traditional object. As another collaboration between London-based theatre company Collective Artistes and the Department of Theatre and Dance at UR, this compelling and highly theatricalized story offers a fresh worldview that is at once international and rooted in specific cultural experience.
