Drawing from the legendary Irish tale Táin Bó Cúailnge, Olagón aims to tell a story of hardship in contemporary, postrecession Ireland while honoring the traditional musics of Ireland, Norway, and America. Muldoon’s text—utilizing both English and Irish—is sung in the unique and highly ornamental vocal practice known as Sean Nós by Ó Lionáird. Festival of South African Dance

Featuring twenty dancers accompanied by live musicians, the Gumboots and Pantsula Dance Companies share the Carpenter Theatre stage for an evening of exhilarating urban street dance that convey stories of hard work, human struggles, and a longing for a better life. Gumboots dancers, clad in Wellington boots, perform a dance style created by South African miners who used foot stomping as a means of communication when talking was prohibited during Apartheid. Established in 1992 by Sello Reuben Modiga, Pantsula dancers use hip-hop and breakdancing against a backdrop of house music to express social issues. This performance will take place at Dominion Arts Center's Carpenter Theatre. Ticket prices for this event include a $2 per ticket restoration fee.

Dorrance Dance FRIDAy, FeBRUARy 2, 2018 | 7:30 Pm

The presentation of Michelle Dorrance’s Myelination was made possible by The New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Dance Project with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Founded in 2011 by MacArthur “Genius” Fellow and artistic director Michelle Dorrance, Dorrance Dance aims to honor tap dance’s uniquely beautiful history in a new and dynamically compelling context—not by stripping the form of its tradition, but by pushing it rhythmically, energetically, aesthetically and conceptually. This Bessie-winning company returns to the Modlin Arts series with three new works: Jungle Blues, Myelination, and Three to One.

“Ethan Lipton is an expert at keeping music, jokes, and narrative tightly knitted together into one consistent human package.” —The New York Times Obie-winning playwright and songwriter Ethan Lipton (No Place to Go) returns with a new adventure in bittersweet and hilariously off-kilter storytelling. With music composed and performed by Lipton, Vito Dieterle, Eben Levy, and Ian Riggs, The Outer Space tells the story of a couple who buys an old spaceship, leaving the noise, pollution, and overpriced rents of Earth for the vast beauty and treacherous terrain of the final frontier. But can they survive the mission?

WeDNeSDAy, mARCh 7, 2018 | 7:30 Pm Seating for this performance will be on the Jepson Theatre stage.

L.A. Dance Project is an artist collective founded in 2012 by renowned choreographer and dancer Benjamin Millepied, along with composers Nico Muhly and Nicholas Britell, art consultant Matthieu Humery, and founding producer Charles Fabius. L.A. Dance Project’s mission is to create new work and revive groundbreaking collaborations from influential dance makers, both in the theater and non-traditional environments. New works by the company are multidisciplinary collaborations and include visual artists, musicians, designers, directors, and composers. The evening’s program will include works by Benjamin Millepied, Ohan Naharin, and more.

Feathers of Fire: A Persian Epic is a visually breathtaking cinematic shadow play for all ages, created by Hamid Rahmanian, a 2014 Guggenheim fellowship-winning filmmaker/ visual artist. The play tells an action-packed magical tale of star-crossed lovers from the tenth-century Persian epic Shahnameh (The Book of Kings), who triumph at the end against all odds. Rahmanian's graphics, derived from the visual tradition of the region, are rendered as puppets, costumes, masks, scenography, and digital animation, all of which come to life in a “live animation” shadow-casting technique perfected by shadow master Larry Reed on a cinema-size screen. The play also features an original score by the acclaimed musical team of Loga Ramin Torkian and Azam Ali.

Artistic Director yaron Lifschitz was inspired by the curves, symmetries, and plurality of this one letter to create an abstract work of power. On a floating white diamond stage, seven extraordinary acrobats bend, fly, contort, and hang— sometimes alone, and others in a tangle of bodies. Dramatic acrobatics, athletic serial acts, and powerful solos are all infused with raw immediacy and beauty. ThURSDAy, APRIL 26, 2018 | 7:30 Pm Alice Jepson Theatre Reserved Seating $20 | Modlin Subscriber $16 Celebrated Inuk performer Tanya Tagaq employs exquisite, unnerving vocal improvisations that bridge traditional roots with contemporary culture. Hailed by Rolling Stone as “one of today's most electric, transfixing performers in any genre,” Tagaq was the recipient of Canada’s prestigious Polaris Music Prize in 2014, and was named to the Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest honors. In her Richmond debut, Tagaq will create a mesmerizing, improvisatory soundscape for the controversial silent film Nanook of the North.

The lines between movement, dance, theatre, and circus are beautifully blurred by the Circa carnival and its whimsical tales of creatures of land and sea, who tumble, fly, leap, and spin their way through the many wondrous worlds of the animal kingdom. Carnival of the Animals whisks you away on a thrilling escapade inspired by the music of Camille Saint-Saëns. In a delightful salute to feathers, fur, and fins, Circa’s acrobats bring this classical music suite to life for a new generation of circus, music, and animal-lovers. A work of sophisticated and delightful family entertainment, it is both contemporary and old-world while it amazes, amuses, and uplifts. The Joke is Mightier than the Sword ThURSDAy, NovemBeR 16, 2017 | 7:30 Pm Camp Concert Hall, Booker Hall of Music Reserved Seating $45 | Modlin Subscriber $36 Dubbed the Jon Stewart of the Arab World, Bassem youssef was the creator and host of the wildly popular TV show Al-Bernameg—the first political satire show in the Middle East and the most watched program in the region from 2011 to 2014 with 30 million viewers every week. youssef is an Egyptian comedian, writer, producer, physician, media critic, and television host. In 2013, he was named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People and was awarded the International Press Freedom Award by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). In 2015, youssef served as a resident fellow at the Institute of Politics at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He has been a recurring guest on The Daily Show and recently hosted the 2015 International Emmy Awards. He is currently a fellow at Stanford University and resides with his family in the United States. Throughout its three seasons Al-Bernameg remained controversial for its hilarious and bold criticism of the ruling powers. Accused of being “anti-Islam” and insulting the Egyptian President, youssef was arrested and interrogated before being released on bail. During its final season, the show achieved unprecedented ratings before youssef announced its termination because of overwhelming political pressures on the show and the airing channel. In The Joke Is Mightier than the Sword, Bassem shares his personal story and his thoughts on the political climate that led to the Arab Spring, its parallels to the current state of American politics, and how propaganda lays the foundation for dictatorial regimes.

by Caryl Churchill | directed by Dorothy Holland Thursday–Saturday, october 5–7, 2017 | 7:30 Pm Sunday, october 8, 2017 | 2 Pm Cousins Studio Theatre General Admission $10 | Modlin Subscriber $8

Marlene, the highly successful director of the Top Girls Employment Agency, throws a dinner party for famous women from the past: the Victorian explorer Isabella Bird; Lady Nijo, courtesan to the Emperor of Japan; the infamous Pope Joan; Chaucer’s patient Griselda; and Bruegel’s Dull Gret. Caryl Churchill’s audacious, brilliant, and inventive play asks this thought-provoking question, "What would you be willing to sacrifice in order to achieve ‘success?’”

by Arthur Miller | directed by Walter Schoen Thursday–Saturday, November 16–18, 2017 at 7:30 Pm and Sunday, November 19, 2017 | 2 Pm Alice Jepson Theatre Reserved Seating $10 | Modlin Subscriber $8 Witch Hunt! The phrase has haunted us through the centuries, but what and who is being hunted is always at the heart of the issue. From the witches of early American Salem, to the communists of the 1950s, to the leaks and secret assignations in today’s Washington, D.C.—how do the ethics of the individual relate to the community at-large? Hysteria rips at the very fabric of Salem society in this wrenching condemnation of a famous witch hunt. But Miller is speaking about more than history when he suggests that the actions of one person can send a shockwave through the halls of power.

BLueS For MiSTer CHarLie

by James Baldwin directed by Tawnya Pettiford-Wates Thursday–Saturday, April 19–21, 2018 | 7:30Pm Sunday, April 22, 2018 | 2Pm Alice Jepson Theatre Reserved Seating $10 | Modlin Subscriber $8 In a small Southern town, a white man murders a black man, then throws his body in the weeds. With this act of violence, loosely based on the notorious 1955 killing of Emmett Till, James Baldwin launches an unsparing and at times agonizing probe into the wounds of race. In his award-winning play, Baldwin turns a murder and its aftermath into an inquest in which even the most well-intentioned whites are implicated—and in which even a killer receives his share of compassion. A collaboration between Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Theatre and the University of Richmond (UR) Department of Theatre and Dance, in association with The African American Repertory Theatre and The Conciliation Project, the production is a narrative to engage in a broader community dialogue around issues of racial justice, economic freedom, family, and faith. Surrounding the production of Blues for Mister Charlie will be Community Forums and Public Dialogues around the play’s content.
