We are excited to announce our 2022-2023 season!
What you hold in your hands is the result of careful consideration, lots of
conversations, and a commitment to sharing exceptional and diverse artists at the Modlin Center for the Arts at the University of Richmond. I’m thrilled with the season we have put together because I know that each and every artist
can—and will—create moments that are transformational and unforgettable. As you read through this season brochure, you will discover artists from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. You will find a balance among male
and female artists. And you will discover a range of stories—some familiar
and others new—as well as dance and music of many different kinds. Each of these performances is a unique window into the human experience.
I hope you will make your plans now to join us—and to encourage you to do
so, we have simplified our pricing for this season. Every adult ticket this season is $35 (and you earn a 20 percent discount when you purchase four or more
shows), senior citizen tickets are $30, and youth tickets are just $10. We have set these prices for a simple reason: We want you to be a part of the Modlin
Center community. And remember, Department of Music and Department of Theatre and Dance performances are free and open to the public.
As the season gets underway, I look forward to visiting with you in the lobby
and hearing your thoughts about your experiences at the Modlin Center. Until
then, I’ll be eagerly awaiting the start of the season—and I hope you will be, too.

Thursday | September 22, 2022 | 7:30 PM Alice Jepson Theatre Adult $35 | Senior $30 | Non-UR Student/Youth $10
Award-winning Cherokee writer and performer DeLanna Studi walks back in time by her father’s side as they follow a 900 mile portion of the Trail of Tears to learn what her ancestors endured in the past and to find her place in the present. Says Studi, “It’s…a play about historical trauma, intergenerational trauma, and of course what it means to be a Cherokee woman today…We need to acknowledge what we’ve done because that’s the only way we can start creating a better future.” Studi reckons with this legacy – while also celebrating resilience, pride, heritage, and humor – in a bold solo show steeped in a dark chapter of American history.

Nikolaj Busk (piano and accordion), Ale Carr (Nordic cittern), and Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen (violin and first violin in the Danish String Quartet) view their Nordic folk roots as a point of departure rather than a fixed destination. The trio blends this adventurous attitude with outstanding musicianship to recast tradition into something startlingly original. As the ensemble members put it: “We are often asked what kind of music we play… [W]e try and encourage people to view it as something that can transcend genres. Perhaps it is no bad thing to defy classification now and again.”

A daughter of the American South with a world of influences in her voice, Grammy winner and MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient Rhiannon Giddens has been described as a “phenomenal vocal power, effortlessly jumping between gospel holler, tender folk song, and lachrymose country ballad” by The Guardian. Her latest collaboration with her partner, multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi, blends her roots, his Italian upbringing, and the Celtic influences of their adopted home in Ireland.

Friday | October 14, 2022 | 7:30 PM Alice Jepson Theatre Adult $35 | Senior $30 | Non-UR Student/Youth $10
Beloved clown and Tony award-winner Bill Irwin applies his sensibility to the words of playwright Samuel Beckett. “What this evening is,” Irwin explains, “is my attempt to share with an audience the place that these writings occupy inside of me. These stretches of language have stayed in my head a long time.” In this intimate oneperson show, Irwin explores a performer’s relationship to Beckett, mining his deep and broad physical and verbal skills. His approach to the comic, the tragic, to every side of Beckett’s work – including Waiting for Godot, Texts for Nothing, and more – invites you to experience the language in compelling new ways.

STEP AFRIKA!, Drumfolk
Friday | October 21, 2022 | 7:30 PM Alice Jepson Theatre Adult $35 | Senior $30 | Non-UR Student/Youth $10
In Drumfolk, Step Afrika! – the first professional company dedicated to the African American tradition of stepping – shares a tale of resistance, resilience, and reclamation. Grounded in the South Carolina Stono Rebellion of 1739, which led to the banning of drums among enslaved Africans, Drumfolk celebrates the beat of the drum embedded in the very bodies of persecuted people. Company founder C. Brian Williams says the intention of the piece is “to reclaim the history of these unsung American heroes and heroines who so bravely fought for freedom. There is still so much of American history to explore and uncover.” When the heartbeat replaces the drumbeat, the people become the drumfolk.

Saturday | November 12, 2022 | 6:30 PM & 8:30 PM Cousins Theatre Adult $25 | Senior $20 | Non-UR Student/Youth $10
Amal Kassir turns her lived experience as an Americanborn Muslim of Syrian heritage into fiery spoken word poetry and storytelling activism. Her work is urgent and decries hatred, violence, and discrimination of all kinds. But the heart of her work is also brimming with hope—a concept present in her very name. In Arabic, “Amal” means “hope,” and so she cannot take the stage without bringing a fundamental hopefulness along. “When we’re not asking someone their name,” she says, “we’re not asking them their story. So when the courageously curious do pop the what’s-your-name question, I try to make it worth their while.”

Saturday | January 21, 2023 | 7:30 PM Camp Concert Hall Adult $35 | Senior $30 | Non-UR Student/Youth $10
A rhapsodic modern day paean spun from the skin of history for string quartet, chorus, and narrator, At War With Ourselves – 400 Years of You features a libretto by National Book Award-winning poet Nikky Finney inspired by her 2013 poem “The Battle of and for the Black Face Boy.” The music was composed by Michael Abels, composer for the Jordan Peele films Us and Get Out. This powerful new work explores race relations, social justice, and civil rights in 21st century America. Finney says the work is addressed to “both Black and white, both enslaved and free, bystander and non-bystander. We were then and now, At War With Ourselves. All of us, one human battlefield."

Choreographer Mark Morris and the dance company that bears his name continue to innovate and create work that invites the audience into places both familiar and quirky – and the result is often extraordinary. “[T]he curtain rose on Morris’ exquisitely relatable dancers,” raved the San Francisco Chronicle, “and I found myself thinking not of comfort or inconstancy, but of transcendence.” The Look of Love is an evening-length work – co-commissioned by the Modlin Center – featuring the music of Burt Bacharach, performed live by Mark Morris Music Ensemble, music direction and arrangements by Ethan Iverson, formerly of the jazz trio The Bad Plus.

She will visit several classes as well as participate in moderated public discussion around the relationship between creative expression and women’s leadership development—and she will take to the Modlin stage for an evening featuring her exceptional musical talent. “Cash is one of the more enduringly important artists in the progressive roots avenue of American music,” says the Santa Barbara Independent. “She embodies the notion of aging gracefully, with creative fires burning — and there is the holy lineage factor, as an offspring of Johnny Cash.” You can have faith that a Rosanne Cash concert will be a moving musical experience.

Flutronix
“When I finally started getting together occasionally with folks for outdoor jam sessions,” says saxophonist Joshua Redman of his pandemic experience, “the approach was predictably casual: ‘Let’s just play some tunes.’ Naturally, a lot of the tunes that were called were ones written by Duke, Monk, or Wayne.” That’s the origin story of Redman’s new project, 3x3, which is centered on music by Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and Wayne Shorter performed in the classic trio format of saxophone, bass, and drums. For Redman, these luminaries are “not just relevant but foundational,” and as a leading light in today’s jazz, Redman builds beautifully on that foundation.

Sometimes music is all fun and games. Flutronix (critically acclaimed flutists and composers Nathalie Joachim and Allison Loggins-Hull) and the Grammy Award-winning Third Coast Percussion (Sean Connors, Robert Dillon, Peter Martin, David Skidmore) collaboratively composed a new work inspired by musical games that tie the sound worlds of these performers and composers together. The program features solo sets by each ensemble in addition to their new co-created work. The Wall Street Journal hails Flutronix for their “unique blend of classical music, hip-hop, electronic programming, and soulful vocals reminiscent of neo-R&B stars like Erykah Badu,” while the Minneapolis Star Tribute praises Third Coast Percussion for “an inspirational sense of fun and curiosity.”

“When a chamber music performance is both easygoing and insanely precise, the underlying substance of it has a way of penetrating deeply into the human psyche,” says The Berkshire Eagle. “That’s what it’s all about for Han, Finckel, and the people with whom they work. They are defining, in real time, the very essence of chamber music.” The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center will distill that essence in a beautiful and engaging evening of music. Wednesday | March 1, 2023 | 7:30 PM Alice Jepson Theatre Adult $35 | Senior $30 | Non-UR Student/Youth $10
Ashwini Ramaswamy
The title of Ashwini Ramaswamy’s new dance work – which is performed to live music by Jace Clayton (DJ Rupture) and Brent Arnold – refers to the Hindu practice of honoring ancestors through offerings of rice. When the crows come to eat the rice, says Ramaswamy, “it means your ancestors are telling you, ‘I’m OK. Keep living your life, but I’m always there with you.’” The piece features Ramaswamy’s South Indian movement tradition known as Bharatanatyam but also invites in the contemporary and Afro-Caribbean forms of Alanna Morris and the Gaga movement language practiced and taught by Berit Ahlgren. Each dancer offers an interpretation of the same Bharatanatyam solo, refracting its rhythmic footwork, sculptural postures, and intricate gestures through her own lens. Ramaswamy likens the structure to “a memory that’s experienced differently from person to person.”
CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE’S NEW JAWN

Christian McBride
“Jawn” is Philadelphia slang that can stand in for just about any noun. For example, as the album art on Christian McBride’s 2018 record put it, “Naw, bruh, it’s not the trio. He’s got a new jawn!” The acclaimed bassist has put together a top-flight quartet – Christian McBride’s New Jawn – that ably walks the razor’s edge between thrilling virtuosity and gut-punch instinctiveness. You don’t want to miss this jawn from the musician known as the “Lord of the Lower Frequencies.”

But like all smart people, they are also searching for love, success, and identity in their own lives. Lydia Diamond brings these characters together in this sharp, witty play about social and sexual politics.

Vancouver-based choreographer Charlotte Boye-Christensen is the founder of NOW-ID, and her collaborative work challenges perceptions of what defines dance while not rejecting tradition. Stephanie Martinez identifies as both Latina and indigenous and brings her unique perspective to campus as she works with students and collaborates with faculty. In addition, the performance will feature new works choreographed by Department of Theatre & Dance faculty Eric Rivera, Anne Van Gelder, and others. Outstanding adjudicated student choreography will be also featured.
THE RIVALS By Richard Brinsley Sheridan Directed by Walter Schoen Costumes by Johann Stegmeir Lights and Sound by Maja White Scenery by W. Reed West April 13-15, 2023 | 7:30 PM Sunday, April 16, 2023 | 2:00 PM Alice Jepson Theatre The headstrong daughter of a wealthy family, the lovely Lydia Languish, is fiercely determined to rebuff parental wishes and marry for love rather than money. Her romantic dilemma is complicated by the machinations of her aunt Mrs. Malaprop whose misapplication of the English language (“she's as headstrong as an allegory on the banks of Nile") has made her one of the most beloved comic characters of all time. An 18th century comedy of manners, The Rivals is Richard Sheridan’s masterpiece about the value of love and money that sparkles with theatricality, wit, exuberance, and fun.

FA LL 2 0 22 E X H I BI T I O N DUANE MICHALS: THE PORTRAITIST On view August 24 - November 18, 2022 Harnett Museum of Art This exhibition presents the first comprehensive overview of photographic portraits by one of the medium’s most influential artists, Duane Michals (American, born 1932). Michals is widely recognized for his ability to navigate between imposing his style and allowing his sitters to express themselves, and for this sequence he conveys personal visual narratives, often adding handwritten messages and poems on the photographic print surface. More than 125 portraits are included in the exhibition, many of which were recently discovered in a workroom in his brownstone building in New York City. Frequently commissioned to create portraits of actors, writers, musicians, and others, Michals relished the challenge of distinguishing
each personality with an improvisational approach. Among the wide ranging selection for the exhibition are images of Pop artist Andy Warhol and his mother Julia Warhola (1958), the original cast of “Saturday Night Live” (1970s), actress Meryl Streep (1975), director Francis Ford Coppola (1982), performer and activist Eartha Kitt (2007), and the creative siblings David and Amy Sedaris (2000s). The exhibition is curated by Linda Benedict-Jones, former photography curator at the Carnegie Museum of Art, and currently Adjunct Professor at Carnegie Mellon University. The exhibition tour is organized by Curatorial Assistance Traveling Exhibitions.
