MODLIN CENTER FOR THE ARTS
The Modlin Center for the Arts continues to be a celebrated leader in the arts. This includes continuing our overall vision in supporting and nurturing international, national, and local artists. We do this while exploring, creating, presenting, and connecting art experiences, which allows us to give back to our greater community. Integrating the arts into the university is also an integral part of our vision for each season we create. This season has been curated to challenge and inspire, and to bring joy to our audiences in an array of transformative performances. This year, the Modlin Center examines more closely the idea of improvisation. As individuals participating in the arts, we will look at the very moment when creating, experiencing, and connecting occur simultaneously. Through the arts, we can connect, gain new perspectives and learn, sometimes all in a single moment. The arts have a way of deepening and weaving these experiences permanently into our lives. From Broadway greats such as Audra McDonald, to internationally acclaimed Peruvian puppetry of Teatro Hugo e Ines, from iconic singer-songwriters such as Arlo Guthrie and Suzanne Vega, to jazz greats such as Regina Carter and Robert Glasper, from the classic artistry of Yefim Bronfman, Garrick Ohlsson, and the Australian Chamber Orchestra to emerging chamber artists such as the Catalyst Quartet. Journey with us as we listen to the joyful music of traditional fiddlers from Canadian, Irish, and American roots music traditions, such as Danú, Natalie MacMaster, and Pokey LaFarge. From dance events such as the impeccable tap performances of the artists in Dorrance Dance, and the acclaimed Hubbard Street Dance Chicago as well as international choreographers and companies such as the Malpaso Dance Company of Cuba. Hear first-hand from the artists themselves in our Artist Voices series with Jeffrey Tambor and Judy Collins. Or experience international theatre artists such as the National Theatre of Scotland, Walnut Street Theatre, and the comedy of the Reduced Shakespeare Company. In addition, join us for our UR art department’s performances with faculty and students. This season share in the joy of the talented and creative artistry we present to you. See your favorite artists and don’t forget to take a chance on somebody new. Best,

CONCERT SERIES
SUZANNE VEGA + DUNCAN SHEIK FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2015 | 7:30 PM Camp Concert Hall, Booker Hall of Music Reserved Seating $40 Two of America’s most iconic singer/songwriters, Suzanne Vega and Duncan Sheik, join forces for one incredible night of music. Bearing the stamp of a masterful storyteller who “observed the world with a clinically poetic eye,” Suzanne Vega’s songs have always tended to focus on city life, ordinary people, and real world subjects. Notably succinct and understated, often cerebral but also streetwise, her lyrics invite multiple interpretations. In short, Suzanne Vega’s work is immediately recognizable as utterly distinct and thoughtful, and as creative now as it was when her voice was first heard on the radio more than 20 years ago. After breaking through in the late ‘90s with his Top 20 single “Barely Breathing,” Duncan Sheik spent much of the subsequent decade taking a breather from the usual rock singer/songwriter rituals. He focused on albums that broke with pop music conventions as well as theatrical musicals such as Spring Awakening, the Broadway sensation that won him two Tony® awards and a Grammy®.

Regina was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship. Those qualities are more apparent than ever on her critically acclaimed release, Southern Comfort (Sony Music Masterworks), on which she explores the folk music of the South. On Southern Comfort, Regina interprets her own roots through a modern lens. “In the Appalachians there were Scottish and Irish descendants, slaves and Native Americans. It was a cultural hodgepodge and the music resulting from it is intoxicating. This disc was to pay homage to my family,” said Regina, “but it turned out to be so much more.”

“A seemingly impossible marriage of tap and modern dance that came off edgy, seductive, and smart.” –The Chicago Tribune Under the direction of Michelle Dorrance, Bessie Award-winning Dorrance Dance with her musical collaborator Toshi Reagon, aims to honor the uniquely beautiful history of tap dance in a new and dynamically compelling context, not by stripping the form of its tradition, but by pushing it: rhythmically, aesthetically, and conceptually. Hailed by The New Yorker as “one of the most imaginative tap choreographers working today,” Dorrance Dance features some of the genre’s best tap artists including The Blues Project’s co-choreographers Derick K. Grant and Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards. Toshi Reagon has been described by Pop Matter as a one-woman celebration of all that is dynamic, progressive, and uplifting in American music. Grace Street Reserved Seating $40 | $36 | $32 “[Harris is the] Apotheosis of hip hop” –Lewis Segal, LA Times “Sakamoto creates expressionist theater that evokes the mysterious, the withering and the tongue-in-cheek.” –San Francisco Bay Guardian “A contemporary pop spin on the classical discipline of butoh.” –Seattle Stranger Cultural Intimacy In Motion is an intersection of four artists that explodes conventional notions of cross-cultural dialogue. VCUarts, in partnership with the Modlin Center for the Arts, presents two collaborative dance performances and an in-depth discussion with the artists who made them. Drawing from Japanese Butoh traditions with a fusion of contemporary ideas, Michael Sakamoto and beloved hip-hop choreographer Rennie Harris conceived Flash as a conversation between their respective aesthetics (butoh and hip-hop) and cultural backgrounds (Japanese-American and AfricanAmerican). Torobaka unites classical Indian Kathak with Spanish Flamenco in a duet performed to live music by the acclaimed London choreographer Akram Khan, and Sevillian-born Israel Galván. Torobaka is a thrilling stylistic dialogue. Inspired by the rhythmic roots of civilization and the sacred relationship between the hunter and animal, the performers use innovative choreography, exquisite technique, and contemporary storytelling to create a distinctly new form of dance. Israel Galván has been called “revolutionary,” “avant-garde,” and simply “a genius.” Known for his complex and rapid-fire footwork punctuated by moments of stillness and silence, Galván dances flamenco on the cutting edge. Presented to diverse audiences in the Mid-Atlantic region, portions of this culturally dynamic project will also be distributed nationally via live stream and/or archived high-definition broadcast. The Torobaka performance will take place at Richmond CenterStage’s Carpenter Theatre. Ticket prices for this event include a $2 per ticket restoration fee.

A world in which data trumps human contact and attention spans are measured in seconds. Of Love and Information, Ben Brantley of The New York Times says “... Leave it to Ms. Churchill to come up with a work that so ingeniously and exhaustively mirrors our age of the splintered attention span... This British playwright has proved herself without peer in creating expressly topical works in which form and function are one.... Sharp-minded [and] tender-hearted.”

Her skills and discretion are much in demand, and she has managed to stuff a goodly sum of money into her quilt over the years. One by one, the other denizens of the boarding house marry and move away, but Esther remains, lonely and longing for a husband and a future. Written by the award-winning playwright Lynn Nottage, Intimate Apparel offers poignant commentary on the turn of the century era when the cut and color of one’s dress—and of course, skin—determined whom one could and could not marry, sleep with, or even talk to in public. Following his successful 2014 staging of Clybourne Park, internationally acclaimed, award-winning director Chuck Mike follows up with this titillating drama on the Jepson stage.

How long will they last? Their resolve is immediately tested by the arrival of a diplomatic mission from the King of France, led by his comely daughter and three young ladies-in-waiting. It’s love at first sight— almost—for all concerned. In the comedy that ensues, Shakespeare’s language reaches its most virtuosic heights in a vivacious entertainment that will dazzle and delight.
Ms. Boye-Christensen is the founder of NOW-ID, an interdisciplinary site-specific contemporary performance company known for its commitment to inventing unique forms that challenge perceptions of dance. Nathan Trice has performed with some of the most exciting dance companies including MOMIX, Complexions Contemporary Ballet and Donald Byrd/The Group. His creative work explores multimedia thematic projects that reflect the dynamics of culture, identity, and gender. Outstanding adjudicated student choreography and live music will be featured, and department faculty Johann Stegmeir and Maja E. White will design original costumes and lights respectively. Don’t miss these talented dancers in a variety of works from the contemporary genre in a dance concert perfect for the entire family.
