Welcome Imagination Starts Here! Welcome to the Modlin Center’s 20th anniversary season! This year marks an important celebration for the Center as we remember all the remarkable and rich experiences we have shared together, and as we look ahead to our ongoing cultural extension and connection to our university and regional communities. We look forward to continuing this platform for exceptional cultural and artistic experiences, to foster discourse through our programs, to support diverse understandings, and for our educational connections to these events. This season we are bringing back some of our favorite artists with new works, and are welcoming to the series an amazing lineup of local, national, and international artists. In additional, the faculty and student performances and events that we present from our performing art departments continue to add a rich and diverse layer to all the cultural events we present each year.

The Nile Project Friday, March 24, 2017 | 7:30PM Camp Concert Hall, Booker Hall of Music Reserved Seating $36 | Modlin Subscriber $29 “...The Nile Project was a superb example of what I call small-world music, of what happens to traditions in the information age.” – The New York Times Conceived by Egyptian ethnomusicologist Mina Girgis and Ethiopian–American singer Meklit Hadero, The Nile Project’s mission is to “educate, inspire, and empower the citizens of the Nile basin to foster the sustainability of the Nile River’s ecosystem.” The Nile Project, consisting of a dozen musicians who hail from every country bordering the Nile River, performing on a range of ancient and modern instruments, vocals, and newly comprised songs, examining the world’s longest river and the people it sustains. The project is in the midst of a three-year-long collaborative tour, appearing at universities, as well as the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the Smithsonian Institute.

The centerpiece of the program by four-time Grammy® Awardwinning sextet Eighth Blackbird is Murder Ballades, a work by composer Bryce Dessner, guitarist for indie rock band The National. “The ‘murder ballad’ has its roots in a European tradition, in which grisly details of bloody homicides are recounted through song,” Dessner writes, and his set of seven instrumental ballads reflects his twists on the tradition. The music of singer-songwriter Will Oldham, aka Bonnie “Prince” Billy, has been linked to Americana, folk, roots, country, punk, and indie rock, and Will himself has been described as an “Appalachian postpunk solipsist” with a voice that is “a fragile sort of warble frittering around haunted melodies in the American folk or country tradition.” He joins the ‘Birds once again to perform a set of original songs, along with Frederic Rzewski’s iconic Coming Together, a touchstone piece of classical music’s young, underground, independently minded set. The evening’s program will also include David Lang’s learn to fly. This performance will take place at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ Leslie Cheek Theatre.

Entwined with the music is an assemblage of projected film, new and archival photography, and the Southern folklore underscoring the verdant cultural landscape of the Piedmont region. Piedmont Blues will include performances by some of the last of the living original Piedmont Blues musicians: NEA National Heritage Fellow bluesman John Dee Holman, as well as Piedmont songsters Boo Hanks and Algia Mae Hinton.

Initially reviled and now revered, this luminous, intricate, and endlessly fascinating 1979 masterpiece was created with composer Philip Glass and visual artist Sol LeWitt, whose ethereal black-and-white film version of the dance hovers over the performers. Lucinda Childs began her career at the Judson Dance Theater in 1963 where she choreographed 13 works and performed in works of Yvonne Rainer, Steve Paxton, and Robert Morris. Since forming her dance company in 1973, she has created more than 50 works, both solo and ensemble. In 1976, Childs collaborated with Robert Wilson and Philip Glass on the opera Einstein on the Beach, which earned her a Village Voice Obie award. In 1979, she received a Guggenheim Fellowship for her collaboration, Dance, with music by Glass and film décor by Sol LeWitt. Childs received the Bessie Award for Sustained Achievement in 2001, was elevated from the rank of Officer to Commander in France’s Order of Arts and Letters in 2004, and received the NEA/ NEFA American Masterpiece Award in 2009.

In celebration of the 80th birthday of legendary composer Philip Glass, the Modlin Center proudly presents The Complete Piano Études featuring Glass who will be joined by world-renowned pianists Maki Namekawa, Aaron Diehl, Timo Andres, and Lisa Kaplan. In an effort to expand his repertoire and to hone his skills on the piano, Philip Glass composed 20 études with a broad range of dynamics and tempo. The études are separated into sets of 10. The first set (Book 1), begun in the mid-1990s, focused on technical matters of piano-playing while the second set (Book 2) presents an examination of the language of music itself—developing new strategies regarding rhythmic and harmonic movement. Following studies at the Kunitachi Music University in Tokyo, Maki Namekawa pursued advanced work under Pierre-Laurent Aimard at the Musikhochschule in Cologne, as well as studies with Werner Genuit and Kaya Han at the Musikhochschule Karlsruhe, and Stefan Litwin in Saarbrüken. Pianist Aaron Diehl is one of the most sought after jazz virtuosos, consistently playing with “melodic precision, harmonic erudition, and elegant restraint” (The New York Times). Diehl’s meticulously thoughtout performances, collaborations, and compositions are a leading force in today’s generation of jazz contemporaries. Nonesuch Recording Artist Timo Andres’ newest album of orchestral works, Home Stretch, has been hailed for its “playful intelligence and individuality,” (The Guardian). The New Yorker wrote that his 2010 album for two pianos, Shy and Mighty, “achieved an unhurried grandeur that has rarely been felt in American music since John Adams came on the scene… more mighty than shy, [Andres] sounds like himself.” Lisa Kaplan specializes in the performance of new work by living composers and is one of the founding members of the four-time Grammy® Award-winning sextet Eighth Blackbird. Kaplan has premiered new pieces by hundreds of composers, including Andy Akiho, Derek Bermel, Jennifer Higdon, Amy Beth Kirsten, David Lang, Nico Muhly, George Perle, and Steve Reich.

Cory Henry is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer with a catalog worthy of a man twice his age. His primary instrument is the organ, which he began playing at the age of 2. At 6 years old he competed at the Apollo Theater and made it to the final round. At 19 he began traveling with the jazz legend Kenny Garrett as his organist in a stint that lasted three years. He has worked with a wide range of artists including Yolanda Adams, Sara Bareilles, P. Diddy, Robert Glasper, Boyz 2 Men, NAS, Snarky Puppy, Bruce Springsteen, The Roots, and many others.

One of the most celebrated contemporary dance companies in America, Martha Graham Dance Company created and continues to embody a timeless and unique style of dance that has influenced generations of artists and captivated audiences worldwide. This program will celebrate both women choreographers and the many different aspects of being a woman. The Martha Graham classics will include Diversion of Angels, Errand into the Maze, and the celebrated Appalachian Spring, with the Pulitzer-Prize winning score by Aaron Copland. “Of all my ballets, Appalachian Spring is the one I cherish the most,” wrote the revolutionary choreographer Martha Graham in 1987. “Aaron Copland wrote the music for me and first called it ‘Ballet for Martha.’” Both American artists were innovators: Copland developed a new musical language to illustrate the American experience while Graham has been described as the “mother of modern dance.” Diversion of Angels from 1948 is a lyrical and joyous ode to the many different qualities of women in love. Errand into the Maze is inspired by the myth of Theseus, who traveled into the labyrinth to confront the Minotaur. This psychological duet sends a woman on the mission. The creature she battles may represent her own fears. In addition to these Graham masterworks, the Company will present the Lamentation Variations. These are three short contemporary works by some of today’s top women choreographers: Liz Gerring, Sonya Tayeh and Aszure Barton. Each dance is inspired by Graham’s iconic solo, Lamentation, and the audience will see a film of Graham herself dancing that groundbreaking work.

Co-commissioned by the Modlin Center for the Arts, the International Festival of Arts & Ideas, The Joyce Theater, and the Kentucky Center for the Arts, this new full-length work was created by former New York City Ballet star and principal dancer Wendy Whelan and dancer and choreographer Brian Brooks. This new work of solos and duets represents a continuation and extension of their exploration, as well as a close and creative collaboration with the New York City-based string quartet Brooklyn Rider, which will perform live. Exploring the limitless possibilities of the traditional Japanese taiko drum, Kodo is forging new directions for a vibrant, living art form. In Japanese, the word “kodo” conveys two meanings. Firstly, “heartbeat,” the primal source of all rhythm. The sound of the great taiko is said to resemble a mother’s heartbeat as felt in the womb, and it is no myth that babies are often lulled asleep by its thunderous vibrations. Secondly, read in a different way, the word can mean “children of the drum,” a reflection of Kodo’s desire to play the drums simply, with the heart of a child. When Death takes an unexpected holiday, an elderly film projectionist finds a new lease on life; a ghost explores the afterlife with her iPhone; a 7-year-old girl discovers her own mortality. In Manual Cinema’s most ambitious show to date, a cast of six puppeteers use hundreds of paper puppets, seven overhead projectors, two cameras, and three screens to create a live “movie” in front of the audience. Accompanied by four musicians and live sound effects, the result is a rich mosaic of cinematic storytelling. Mementos Mori is a lively, beguiling meditation on death and dying.

The Modlin Center for the Arts, in partnership with Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, presents the eighth season of broadcast performances by the National Theatre, London.
The Modlin Center for the Arts, in partnership with Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, will broadcast the seventh season of Pathe Live’s Bolshoi Ballet, featuring ballet productions direct from the grand Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Russia. Audiences will enjoy these outstanding performances with the Bolshoi principals, soloists, and corps de ballet. Each production will feature behind-the-scenes programming, including interviews with the cast and creative teams, either prior to the start of the production, or during intermission.
NT Live broadcasts live from the National Theatre in Great Britain, and on occasion, other theatres in the U.K, to theatres and cinemas throughout the world. Though each broadcast is filmed in front of a live audience, cameras are carefully positioned throughout the auditorium to create a truly immersive experience for each production. Ms. Damiani, former artistic director of Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, returns to Richmond for her third creative residency. Her work, noted for its broken lines, isolated parts, and group dynamics, is fused with a progressive movement vocabulary. Norbert De La Cruz, who returns to create his second premiere for the dancers, has been praised for his combination of athleticism and aesthetically dynamic shapes and forms.
