The University of Richmond’s 2018-2019 Tucker-Boatwright Festival of Literature and the Arts will be hosted by the Department of Music in collaboration with Modlin Center for the Arts, Richmond Symphony, UR Chaplaincy, UR Religion, UR Women Gender and Sexuality Studies, UR Museums, UR Art, UR International Film Series, UR INTC, RVA Sound Festival, Hindu Cultural Center, and Islamic Center of Central Virginia.

This year’s events will focus on the theme “Beyond Exoticism,” investigating expression across difference and examining the ways in which artists maintain, resist, reject, and critique the exoticizing and self-exoticizing impulse. The festival will focus on new, emerging voices through a series of original commissions, and will feature a world premiere of a new work for chorus and symphony by Reena Esmail.

From the heart of El Barrio (Spanish Harlem) comes Los Pleneros de la 21 (LP21). Founded in 1983 by National Heritage Fellow, Juan Gutiérrez, LP21’s 12-piece ensemble resurrects the African-rooted plena and bomba musical styles of Puerto Rico. Three generations of Puerto Rican musicians, dancers, and artisans set complex vocal harmonies to the rhythms of plena and bomba drums resulting in what Billboard praised as “exhilaratingly deep Latino explorations of Afro-Cuban grooves.”

Following the release of her first music video “El Soor” (“The Wall”), a sly commentary about the political situation in Egypt, El Hawary has become an outspoken voice for change who chronicles the stories of everyday life. Enjoy this rich and varied program centered around the songs of Kurt Weill, from “Nanna’s Lied” and “Trouble Man,” to classics from The Threepenny Opera and Lost in the Stars. Lindsey and Trotignon released a joint album, Thousands of Miles, in 2017 that “goes far beyond a simple fusion of jazz and classical.”

Inspired by the historical “Battle of Currents” between Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla in their quest for finding energy sources for the world, Currents takes the audience on a journey between two troupes, each representing a different view of the essence of light and electricity and each inspired by a different aesthetic and artistic approach. The show combines custom-made musical instruments, massive video art projections including videomapping on the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, and eleven skilled performers in constant movement, playing on different instruments and musically juggling between different sounds.

Frank is an office worker living in New York in the early 1980s who is obsessed with cleanliness and order. Plagued by pigeons in the park, Frank starts to believe they are plotting against him.

A darkly comedic yet heartfelt adventure, The Pigeoning spins puppetry, music, video, and lo-fi special effects into an epic tale about the illusion of safety and control in the context of unexpected events. The Pigeoning takes a look at the divide between man and nature at a time when listening to the animals may be our best bet. Recent Guggenheim award-winning artist and director Robin Frohardt brings her rich aesthetic, highlydetailed constructions, and convention-breaking storytelling to this bunraku-style puppetry show performed by five puppeteers.

• University of Richmond student subscription tickets are $5 per performance (available only to undergraduate, graduate, Law, and School of Continuing and Professional Studies students with a valid student ID). Student subscriptions may only be purchased in-person at the Box Office or by phone. A valid student ID is required.

• Ticket prices include a 20% subscriber discount and a 7% City of Richmond Admissions Tax.

• Ticket prices for events at Dominion Energy Center events include a $2 per ticket restoration fee.

• Renewing subscription orders must be received by noon on Wednesday, August 1, 2018 to ensure seating priority.
