steele Amanda Steele’s journey from middle-school fashion fanatic to wildly successful model-actress-entrepreneur is certainly one for the books! Millions were captivated by the bubbly 10-year-old beauty vlogger when she burst onto the scene with her YouTube channel, MakeupbyMandy24. Since then, she’s signed with IMG Models, starred in a hit web series, and partnered with brands like Adidas & CoverGirl. Now, at just 19 years old, Steele boasts a massive social media following and a hyper-hyphenated career most adults would kill for—and she’s only getting started! OD: You started your YouTube channel at the young age of 10. What inspired you to start vlogging, back then? Amanda: I first wanted to be a fashion designer when I was younger, so I ended up watching videos on YouTube of how to sew. Through clicking on related videos, I found the world of beauty gurus and became obsessed! After being a fan for a while, I decided that I wanted to start making my own videos. mod: Did you ever think your channel would pick up as quickly as it did? What was the first thought that ran through your mind when you reached one million YouTube subscribers? Amanda: I never expected my channel to become what it was. My videos were always just about passion and doing

what made me happy, so the fact that it impacted so many other people’s lives is so incredible to me. I remember when I hit one million YouTube subscribers, I thought I made it! It seemed like, “okay girl, you were able to make this and you have so much support behind you. Anything is possible now.” mod: With such a large online presence, you essentially grew up in the spotlight. What was that experience like for you? How’d you balance YouTube & social media with school & everything else? Amanda: It was very hard at times, being judged for everything you do at such a young age. I was still finding myself and having people constantly telling me who I am was confusing. It really forced me to find confidence and grow up much faster than normal. Being in the spotlight, I had to learn to love and accept myself in order to deal with the negativity. I also had to learn how to be mature. I would be in meetings often, starting at age 13, and wanted

to be taken seriously in a room full of adults. For schooling, I ended up taking my courses online, since I was working so much, I would miss school a lot. It worked better with my schedule to do my school work from home or while traveling. MOD: How do you gain inspiration for your video concepts? What’s the creative process usually like? Amanda: I love for my videos to show what I am doing with my life and the things I’m loving at the time. Posting things I love comes across so much better to my audience. When I travel, I like to make fun vlogs and when I’m at home, I like to make more makeup tutorials and fashion videos. The inspiration from my videos really comes from what’s going on around me at the time. mod: What’s the most rewarding part of what you do? What’s the most challenging part? Amanda: The most rewarding part of what I do is when I get messages from followers that tell me I inspire them. It is so special to hear other people tell me about how I’ve impacted their lives. A lot of times, I hear from girls that I’ve taught them how to be more confident and to follow their dreams without caring what anyone thinks. If I can give that to just one person that makes me so happy, so to hear that from multiple people makes my job so rewarding. The most challenging part of my career, I think, is finding a balance between living my life and doing what I want, versus constantly putting out content I know people want to see. I owe my success to my loyal followers, so I want to give them exactly what they want to see from me, but at the same time, I have to follow my dreams and do what’s going to make me happy in the end. I hope that even though this is challenging, some followers take that as inspiration to put themselves first. mod: Tell us about your most interesting fan encounter, thus far. Amanda: There are so many crazy, fun ones! Most recently, I was at a Denny’s at probably 3 A.M. with two friends and a fan and her boyfriend approached us. She said she loved us and asked for photos. After that, she revealed that her boyfriend was a professional magician. Of course,

we asked to see some tricks, so he pulled a bunch out in the middle of the Denny’s! LOL. It was super random and fun. mod: How do you handle your share of haters & social media critics? What advice would you offer to other teens dealing with similar issues? Amanda: Not everyone is going to like you. There’s no reason in trying to please other people because it is IMPOSSIBLE to make everyone like you. But what you can do is make yourself happy. Be comfortable with your decisions, who you are as a person, and how you treat others. As long as you’re confident in that, it won’t matter what haters say. mod: What’s one of the biggest misconceptions people have about you? Amanda: I hear a lot of comments that I only upload videos for money. I think this is so funny because this is so opposite compared to other YouTubers. I am not willing to compromise who I am in order to get more views and make more money. I haven’t been as involved in my YouTube channel as I was in years before, but that’s because I’ve seen how the community has changed and it’s just not the same. I feel like so much of YouTube is click bait and fully produced for numbers. If I am uploading on YouTube, it is strictly a passion project or completely for my fans. Sometimes, I’d just rather work on how I want to expand outside of being a YouTuber and finding my personal success. It’s not that I don’t appreciate the people on YouTube who have been there for me forever, but to show them what’s possible and how you can start small and work hard to make all your dreams come true. mod: Now that you’re a successful model, actress, and entrepreneur, how do you still maintain your YouTube channel with all your other tasks? Amanda: I find that having a team of videographers and editors keep me on track. I also like to record anything and everything, and then see what I can make out of it in the end. mod: Tell us about your jewelry line with Luv AJ? What was it like designing your own capsule collection with the

brand? Amanda: The experience of working with Luv AJ was so wonderful! I was so happy to hear they were interested in collaborating with me because I am such a big fan of their pieces. Amanda Thomas, owner of Luv AJ, totally understands my vision. Working with her was so creatively fulfilling because she saw my ideas and was able to accurately bring them to life. This collection represents me and my style so well and I can’t wait for everyone to see. mod: You’ve also expressed interest in fashion design. Which designers/ brands inspire you the most? Amanda: I love Alyx, Off-White, Alexander Wang, and Balenciaga. These brands represent my style and I always get inspiration from them. mod: Who’s your favorite fashion icon and why? Amanda: Rihanna! She kills it every time. mod: How would you describe your personal style? Amanda: I think my personal style would be described as edgy and cool with a hint of sophistication. mod: What’s the biggest beauty/ fashion risk you’ve ever taken? Amanda: I love taking risks with fashion so it never really feels that crazy when I do it. But, I did go from black hair to blonde, choppy hair with bangs. I think that might have been the wildest I’ve gone. mod: What are some of your favorite places to shop? Amanda: Opening Ceremony, Maxfield, Ssence, Farfetch, and vintage stores. mod: Where do you typically turn for style inspo? Amanda: Instagram. I love streetwear fashion accounts that show tons of different people’s personal styles. I scroll through and save photos for inspiration. mod: One piece of fashion advice you think every girl should know: Amanda: Looking good and dressing good is about what you feel confident in. When someone is wearing an outfit they truly feel like themselves in, they radiate. Wear what makes you feel good and the world will agree! mod: What’s your signature makeup look? Amanda: I love doing glowy skin, contour, and bronzecolored eye makeup. MOD: Best tips for staying camera-ready: Amanda: I feel like no matter how my makeup looks, if I have a pair of false lashes on, I am camera-ready.

house without? Amanda: Lip balm!! And lip balm only! mod: There are always new makeup looks floating around Instagram. What’s the worst makeup trend you’ve seen recently? What’s a trend you can’t wait to try? Amanda: I don’t like to judge trends because you never know if, in the future, you’re going to be into it. Sometimes, people go over the top with click bait on Instagram and make trends that are basically just jokes, and those might be ones I will never try. I forgot what the name of it is, but there is this one trend where you basically intensify your flaws. I think it’s really cool and edgy. It includes darkening your dark circles. I would love to rock it one day. mod: What are some of your favorite beauty hacks? Amanda: Concealer for eyeshadow primer and lip balm as highlighter. mod: Lip gloss or lipstick? Amanda: Lipstick. mod: Eyeliner or mascara? Amanda: Mascara mod: Got any weird obsessions or guilty pleasures? Amanda: FOOD. Everything food. I watch cooking videos on Instagram all day. mod: What’s the last show you binge-watched? Amanda: 13 Reasons Why mod: What’s the last movie you saw that made you cry? Amanda: I don’t usually cry in movies. I remember the first movie I cried in was My Sister’s Keeper. mod: Who are some of your favorite actors/ actresses? Amanda: I love Jennifer Lawrence and Margot Robbie. I think I love every movie that Miles Teller is in. mod: What are some of your favorite places to travel & why? Amanda: The South of France is my favorite place to travel to. It is breathtaking and relaxing. I always love being in NYC, as well. It feels like my second home. mod: What can you tell us about your upcoming projects? Amanda: Design design design. mod: What are some of your goals for the next few years? Amanda: I want to launch a clothing brand and work as an actress. Follow Amanda on Instagram: @amandasteele

In 2015, breakthrough fashion designer, Andrew Coimbra launched his lifestyle and ready-to-wear brand. Based out of Toronto, Canada, Coimbra produces both men and womenswear with a strong focus on simple yet powerful design. Each collection plays into the duality of the modern person: exploring both the classic and contemporary, and the more street and relaxed self. MOD: Tell us a little bit about your life, growing up. Andrew: I grew up in downtown Toronto, in an area called Harbord Village. It’s where Little Italy, China Town and a main Jewish neighborhood meet, so I was lucky to be surrounded by a great mix of cultures. I studied Material Art & Design at OCAD University, and then Fashion Techniques at George Brown College, before working for Canadian Labels Pink Tartan, Philip Sparks, and an internship at NY label Proenza Schouler. MOD: When did you decide that you wanted to be a fashion designer? How’d you get started? Andrew: I was always a visual person; I grew up painting and drawing all the time. My Avó (grandmother) enjoyed sewing at home, and I was curious about the process, and she was happy to show me how the machine worked, and how I could create my own visions. At the time, I remember also being heavily intrigued by the outfits musicians and pop stars were wearing in music videos. mod: Who/ what are some of your greatest inspirations?

Andrew: I am always inspired by the work of contemporary visual artists because there is always a new way to see the way colors and shapes can interact with each other, and contemporary artists often capture it well. I also love Andre 3000 and find his stylistic freedom to be inspiring. mod: Tell us about your experience interning with Proenza Schouler. What’s one of the most important things you learned? Andrew: I think the most important takeaway was that I learned totally new ways of being organized. I’ve always been a pretty organized person, but the internship allowed me to learn how cataloguing and getting your ideas in order can be beneficial in the long term. mod: You design for both men & women. Have you always been interested in both? Are there any differences in the way you approach menswear vs womenswear? Andrew: I’ve always been interested in designing for both, but menswear always took a primary focus for me. I try to keep the two genders very fluid and blurred, but I think there are elements of womenswear that are too important not to explore; the idea of femininity. Not to say

that menswear can’t explore the same sensation, it has different intentions because of social constructs. mod: How would you describe the aesthetic of your work? Andrew: I like to think of it as cool, refined ease. Pieces you can put on without overthinking. mod: How did you develop your design style? What drove you in this particular artistic direction? Andrew: I think the influence of contemporary and street artists, and my experiences growing up in a metropolis really drives my design style. I think it’s incredibly important to maintain one’s individual cultural identity, and so I often try to create pieces that can be adopted into the wearer’s style sense, rather than trying to enforce a stylist dogma. It feels more organic and true. mod: What’s your favorite piece from your latest collection & why? Andrew: I really love the printed silk dress with grosgrain straps, and that’s because it feels so different from what I’ve been doing, in a good way. I also just think it’s a design that can be flattering on a lot of silhouettes. I also really really love the city jacket and short set. When you have it on, you feel expensive because it’s a suit jacket style, but it’s not restrictive; it feels cool, and like you can run around the city in it. mod: What are some of the most notable ways you’ve evolved as a designer, since the start of your career? Andrew: It’s funny, because last night I was reviewing old samples as I was organizing the studio, and I think the natural things have progressed: the quality has improved, I design with intention now, whereas before I was still figuring [it] out. mod: What’s been the highlight of your career, so far? Andrew: I met with editors at the Vogue Offices in New York City, early last year, where they viewed my Fall 2017 collection and were impressed with what they saw. They were incredibly supportive, and encouraged me to consider showing at New York Fashion Week. mod: Who’s your ideal celebrity muse? Andrew: I would say either Andre 3000, Troye Sivan or Zayn Malik

mod: Many artists have certain conditions in which they like to work, to help their creative process—whether it’s listening to music, working outdoors, etc. What’s yours? Andrew: I love being surrounded by music—I have music playing while I work, sleep, shower, walk... I find it to be really motivating. mod: Where would you like to see yourself and your designs in the future? Andrew: I would like to see the brand become considerably more global, and recognized across the industry among other great labels. mod: What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned on your journey in fashion, thus far? Andrew: I’ve been really lucky to know amazing people who have been passionate about helping me meet the right people, or complete crucial tasks in order to get where I am, and I think the most valuable lesson is to always be aware of your resources, and grateful for them—whether they are friends, family, or industry peers. mod: Any advice for young, aspiring fashion designers out there? Andrew: The first thing to do is really know yourself, and know who your demographic is. The sooner you have that down, the easier it is to carve a name for yourself. mod: Tell us a fun fact about yourself. Andrew: I grew up speaking English and Portuguese! When I was 18, I was hired to help create, edit and write for a book on sexual health for young men—it’s available online, and has been transcribed into, I think, 5 languages. It’s called The Little Black Book for Guys. mod: Where can people find more of your work, online? Andrew: The full collection can be viewed and shopped on www.andrewcoimbra.com Our facebook page is www.facebook.com/ andrewcoimbracollection Instagram is @andrewcoimbra We are also on www.notjustalabel.com as a “Black Sheep” (An exclusive selection of cool brands to watch out for, internationally!
