hannon Phelps: What’s it like being the youngest of five siblings? Andy Allo: It’s amazing! I got so spoiled because by the time I was born, my parents were tired and had been worn down by my older siblings. It was the best. It also doesn’t help that I’m named after my dad so I’m daddy’s little girl and probably his favorite. We have the same name, c’mon, I got away with so much. Shannon: When/ how’d you learn to play the guitar? Andy: I started playing guitar about 9 years ago. I wanted to be able to pick up and go play my songs anywhere. I also wanted to put music to the words and melodies I had been writing. It began with me learning by ear. I’d be trying different positions on the guitar, seeing what sounded good, what didn’t and then also looking up chords in books and online. Shannon: What was it like working with the legendary Prince? I’m sure you learned a ton from him, but what would you say was your biggest takeaway from that experience? Andy: Wow, working with Prince was life-changing. I learned so much about myself and what it takes to be an artist. Prince was always learning and evolving. He pushed me and challenged me every day and I think that’s one of the biggest takeaways. To always keep learning, challenging

and evolving as a person and as an artist. Shannon: You’d been singing/ playing on your own before collaborating with Prince. How’d you guys initially connect? Andy: Yes, I had released my first album in ‘09 and the Africa Channel did a special on me and my music for their Artist Spotlight TV show. About a year or so later, they were working with him and called me to see if I’d like to come to a concert of his and that they might be able to introduce us. I went just excited to see Prince in concert and didn’t really expect to meet him. They made it happen and we met that night. I remember us talking and playing music all night. After jamming for a few more weeks, he asked me to join the New Power Generation band and go on tour. It’s pretty crazy how one thing can lead to something that changes your whole life. Shannon: You’re originally from Cameroon. Do you get to visit often? Have you gotten to perform there? Andy: I miss Cameroon so much and haven’t been back since I moved to the States. I performed in Nigeria this summer which was bittersweet because I got to be back in West Africa and eat a lot of the food I hadn’t had in over a decade but at the same time, I was literally right next to Cameroon. I loved my time in Nigeria and it made me even more excited to get back to Cameroon. I’d really love to put on a concert there.

From her sultry voice and killer guitar skills, to her stunning features and magnetic stage presence, Allo is nothing short of the total package! Now, the multi-talented artist is showing off her acting chops amongst a star-studded cast in the highly anticipated Pitch Perfect 3. Shannon: What’s one of your favorite songs to perform live & why? Andy: Oooo that’s hard. It depends what mood I’m in. One of my favorites is Yellow Gold. I’ve started doing these live remixes where I’ll sing different song lyrics while playing the same song. Yellow Gold lends itself really well to that so while I’m singing that song, I’ll do a verse of Bob Marley’s Waiting In Vain then go back to Yellow Gold. Something like that but with a couple more songs. It’s such a fun song to play but adding that element takes it to another place. Shannon: You’ve been on several tours, now. What’s something you must have with you when you travel? Andy: This is embarrassing but I must have my thermals and ear plugs. I’m cold all the time so being warm is my number one priority on the road because the tour bus is usually freezing and I’m such a light sleeper too. Shannon: I love how you’ve explored different genres of music throughout your career, from funk to neo-soul/R&B, to alternative/ rock. What inspires you to switch it up and reinvent your sound? Andy: I love playing around and expressing different sounds and styles. Each record tells a story of a time in my life and is also my take on the kind of music I was influenced by and loved as a kid. I feel it also keeps things exciting for me and anyone listening to my music because you don’t know what to expect next. It’s like we’re on a musical adventure together. Music doesn’t live in a box and I always want to make music that is always changing, growing and evolving because I am too. Shannon: Tell us a little about your role in Pitch Perfect 3. What can audiences expect, come December 22? Andy: I’m a bit of a bad guy in this movie which is really fun. Our rival band is super hot and rocknroll so I have some sass and attitude when it comes to messing with the Bellas. You can expect a lot of laughs and great riffoffs. The music in this is so cool. We’re a band making music with instruments so the Bellas need to watch out ‘cause it’s on another level. Shannon: You worked with such a charismatic group of women on Pitch Perfect 3, including Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Elizabeh Banks, and Ruby Rose. What’s the funniest/ craziest moment you remember from on set? Andy: There’s a moment which you can see in the trailer where Rebel makes a joke about our names and take after take she kept making different jokes. It took everything in me not to burst out laughing each time. Everyone on set was so funny and open to collaborate so we’d be improvising and making different jokes all the time. It was a blast.

Pajamas. I was looking for a movie to watch one night. Just looking to have a chill movie night by myself and saw this poster on iTunes. I didn’t read anything about it and so I thought it was a light fun movie about kids playing in pajamas. Boy was I wrong. So wrong. Shannon: What’s a movie that made you cry from laughter? Andy: Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. So many moments in that movie, I always find myself laughing so hard. No matter how many times I watch it. Shannon: What’s your favorite thing to eat? Andy: I love food and eating so this is hard. I have a LOT of favorites. I’m big on sweets but I also love breakfast food. I’ll pick one of my favorite things to eat...which are Grits. I eat them with butter and sugar. Now, for those who eat them savory, I’m down with that too but my go to is sweet. Don’t judge me! Haha. Shannon: What’s your least favorite thing to eat? Andy: Oysters Shannon: What’s one cause that you’re passionate about? Andy: Honestly, any organization that focuses on children, I’m very passionate about. They are our future so any group that works to support them, build them up or heal them is something I try to be a part of and support. Shannon: What advice would you give your younger self? Andy: I feel like in the past, I would ignore my gut feelings until I couldn’t anymore. So I would say to trust myself more and not to be so afraid to let go of things or people that aren’t good for me. Shannon: What’s your favorite fashion trend of all time? Andy: Fringe. Give me anything with fringe on it and I’ll be so happy. Shannon: What’s a fashion trend you hope never comes back in style? Andy: Oh my goodness. I remember in high school I had a the floor length denim skirt with pleating and I pray that it NEVER comes back. Ha. Shannon: What are your top 3 beauty products? Andy: I’m not sure if this falls under the product category but my Clarisonic Cleansing Brush is amazing, SK-II Face Mask and Skinceuticals Tinted Sunscreen.

Shannon: You’re obviously very talented, as a singer, musician, and actress. Got any other talents/ skills most people don’t know about? Andy: Oooo I love this question. I’m a pretty good cook. Especially, my plating skills. They are off the chain. I take a lot of pride in presentation. Hmm what else... I actually know how to hand stitch. Kind of random but I had a home economics class in Cameroon where they taught us to sew and that stuck with me.

Shannon: What’s your favorite app? Andy: I’m seriously on the ZARA app way too much but I love it!

Shannon: What’s your go-to karaoke song? Andy: Whitney Houston, “I Will Always Love You” or “U Can’t Touch This” by MC Hammer.

Shannon: What advice would you give to other aspiring artists out there? Andy: Have fun. Sometimes it’s hard to remember that when you start thinking about or focusing on strategy, the money or the business side of being an artist. So I’d say try to have as much fun as possible and not let that side of things take away the joy of just making music and playing. I’ve found focusing on why I started making and playing music in the beginning has made it easier to get through some of the not-so-fun parts of the industry. So never forget why you started, why you love it, and why you can’t do anything else.

Shannon: What’s your favorite Broadway musical? Andy: Hamilton Shannon: What’s the movie that made you cry the hardest? Andy: One thing to know about me is I cry watching movies all the time. But the time I cried the hardest was watching The Boy in the Striped

Shannon: If you could have one superpower, what would it be & why? Andy: This is a tough decision. Ok. I will go with teleporting because traveling on a plane for long hours is the worst and it’d be nice to say I want to be in Paris or
