Fashion is way more than just going into your favorite store and buying clothes. A lot of thought, creative thinking and construction went in to that dress you just picked up. Designers put ample thought and soul in to their garments and every once in a while, a designer emerges that, in no doubt, thinks outside the box to create pieces that inspire. Irina Dzhus, is a Ukrainian designer, who founded her line DZHUS in 2010. DZHUS is all about construction and edge, but is not confined to a certain age group. The aesthetic of these designs define utilitarian construction. MOD had the pleasure to interview this talent and she most definitely gave a lot of insight on her inspiration and passion for her creations.

MOD: Tell us about where you grew up. Irina: I have lived in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, all my life so far and that is where my brand, DZHUS, is based for the time being. MOD: Were you raised in a creative household? Irina: My family was never related to either the fashion or art world. However, they always aimed at diverse, intellectual and

creative development for me. Thus, once they noticed my interest in design was more than just a hobby, they sent me to an art school, where I was then brought up as a creative among talented peers and well-known artists as tutors.

MOD: Have you always been interested in fashion? What inspired you to become a designer? Irina: I started planning a career in fashion design at the age of 5. There was no particular turning point, but the fact I just could not imagine my life without fashion design.

MOD: What was the first thing you ever designed and created?

Irina: Although I’ve drawn sketches of garments

since my early childhood, my experimental designs produced at the age of 14-16 can probably be called the first steps towards professional realization. I cannot recall the very first piece I created, but I can describe the most memorable outfit made in that period for a young designers contest. The look was inspired by pagan mysticism. It included kind of a caftan made of ivory cotton, a long white honeycomb cloth skirt, and an eccentric head accessory with horns made of rope.

MOD: What designers did you most admire growing up? Irina: Comme des Garcons, Maison Martin Margiela, Yohji Yamamoto and Rick Owens.

MOD: Tell us about DZHUS. What defines your brand?

Irina: Vanguard yet utilitarian, DZHUS’ design

concept derives from innovative structural solutions. Reserved coloring and technical textures are characteristic features of my brand. Each piece I create carries a distinctive ideological message.

MOD: How would you describe your design aesthetic? Irina: Conceptual and edgy, austere and structural, avant-garde yet virtually archetypical, categoric but variable.

MOD: Where do you find inspiration for your collections? Irina: I get inspired by primeval beauty, initial forms, icons, anthropogenic aesthetics, technical textures.

MOD: What is your favorite piece from your F/W 13 collection? Irina: The Alabaster Dress. Made of white wrinkled-textured fabric, it looks monolithic and angular. Its design is remarkable by the original sleeve cut and the geometric flap element on the back that fastens with metal press-studs.

MOD: If you could design for any celebrity, who would be your celebrity muse? Irina: Tilda Swinton. MOD: Where can we find your collec-

tions?

Irina: My collections are sold online through Not Just A Label (notjustalabel. com), Inspirare (shop.inspirare.com), Hako (hakoline.com) and -D-A-S-Hstore (fashionweek.kiev.ua/dash-store) and stocked at concept stores The One and Komoora in Kiev, Ukraine, and Paper Pigeon in Budapest, Hungary. MOD: What stores would you love to see your collections in, in the future? Irina: The list of the stores I would love to be stocked in is quite long. Mostly, they are located in London, Berlin, Antwerp, Amsterdam and Paris. Talking about online sales, I hope to have a chance to collaborate with Muuse, Thenumber4, The Cools and Anthom. MOD: What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far, and why? Irina: It’s hard to define one specific point. First of all, I am proud of the very fact I have launched my own label without any start-up budget or patronage – frankly speaking, I just had to do the impossible to make my dream come true. Having released my latest collection, I got media and online retailers from Europe, USA and Asia interested in DZHUS, which, in my opinion, is a step forward from managing a local brand to international PR and marketing. MOD: What are your goals for next 5 years? Where would you like to see yourself & your brand?

Irina: I have never dreamt of a bombastic show

within theframework of an international Fashion Week, and I will be confused if that changes. What would totally meet my expectations is having limited consignments of my designs stocked at Europe’s cult concept stores.

MOD: If you weren’t a fashion designer, what else would you be doing, career wise? Irina: I have always been disappointed having no time to manage my second favorite activity – poetry writing. However, to be more realistic, I would definitely continue working as a fashion stylist, which I have been doing for 5 years so far, along with fashion design. I am a pro and in great demand in the areas of advertising, editorial, celebrities’ features and image consultation. I find this occupation exciting and prestigious; nevertheless, it would never make me feel as happy and self-satisfied as design does. MOD: Tell us a fun fact about yourself.

Irina: I was a goth in my teens.

MOD: What advice would you give to someone trying to break into the fashion industry? Irina: In my mind, design is first of all about innovation. A career in the fashion industry is very challenging and hard to build. It is only worth that if an artist has something completely new and relevant to say with their work. I suggest design remains more of a hobby for those who don’t. MOD: What is the best way for people to connect with you? Are you on any social media? Irina: Nowadays, social media accounts are the first thing to be done in terms of PR. Whoever is interested in DZHUS is welcome to the brand’s official Facebook page: facebook.com/dzhus.conceptual.wear

Be sure to check out what Irina has in store for the DZHUS, F/W 13 collection! We promise you won’t be disappointed!

This season is all about finding the perfect balance between edgy & sleek. Learn how to get the look!

A

utumn is the best season to experiment with new looks. It’s simple to switch things up by layering with a biker jacket & throwing on a pair of booties. For the ‘rebel-chic’ look, add a little edge to your outfit with a touch of leather and some spiked jewelry. Simple details like zippers, studs & chains can transform a simple, sleek look into a fierce one. Keep your tops & bottoms simple, only adding accessories to get the ‘rebel’ look, while keeping it balanced & chic.

e

bony Day may seem relatively new on this side of the Atlantic, but the 20-year-old British singer/songwriter has been at it for a while. From her breakout success as a YouTube artist covering popular tracks from the likes of Chris Brown and One Direction, she’s gained quite the following in the UK and abroad. And after winning MTV’s Brand New for 2013 Award, the coming days can only get brighter! MOD caught up with the singer for a quick chat, shortly following the release of her EP, The Beginning.

MOD: The MTV Brand New award is a

big deal, especially as an unsigned artist. It places you in the ranks of Justin Bieber and Conor Maynard. What was it like to win? Ebony: It was honestly so crazy for me to win, I’m such a big fan of everyone who was in the contest. It was an amazing feeling.

MOD: You got your start covering

popular songs, what has it been like to produce an EP with your music? Ebony: I’ve loved every second of making the EP. It was a really fun experience being able to experiment with different styles and finding the type of music that really represented me. It’s nice to be able to perform my own songs now and not just covers, I like it a lot.

MOD: When fans and newcomers

listen to your work, what do you want them to feel, notice, or experience? Ebony: I want them to be able to relate to my music. Every song is about something real and personal to me. If they listen to the lyrics and it reminds them of

a time in their life or even helps them through a current situation, then that would make me really happy.

MOD: Is there anything special you hope to convey with your songs? Ebony: Most of the songs are about boys and relationships. Some are about the good times and some are about the bad. I’d like them to show people that even if one person hurts you it doesn’t mean the next person will. Always look at the positives and move on to something new. MOD: How would you best describe your musical style?

Ebony: I’d say it was acoustic pop/

RnB.

MOD: Who inspires you most? Is it friends and family or other musicians? Ebony: My family inspires me every day. I’ve always been told that you don’t get anything unless you work hard. My parents make sure I never take anything for granted but also not to take life too seriously, there’s always

a reason to smile. They inspire me a lot.

MOD: Where do you see yourself by this time next year?

Ebony: In a year I’d like to be on a big support tour. I find the thought of touring so exciting because you get to meet so many people and see so many places!

MOD: Do you have a goal you’re currently working toward?

Ebony: I always have little personal

goals and milestones. This year’s was to bring out my first EP, so I’m really glad that’s happened.

MOD: What do you love about your life as a musician?

Ebony: I love everything about it. I love that I can be sitting down somewhere and someone will come over and say that they like my music, I love that from the second they say hello I feel like I’ve known them for years. It’s an amazing feeling. I also love that I get to travel somewhere new almost every day. I’m very lucky to be able to experience so many new things at such a young age. I wouldn’t change anything for the world!

MOD: What advice do you have for young girls and guys looking to you for inspiration? Ebony: Never be scared about doing what you love. If someone doesn’t like what you do then that’s fine, it’s impossible to please absolutely everyone. Do what you love, not what they love. Learn from every bump in the road. The only way you’ll never make your dreams come true is if you quit. Keep your head up and keep going. Some have called Day an English Taylor Swift; with her guileless smile and easy demeanor, it’s easy to see why. MOD forecasts sunny days ahead for Miss Day.
