OD Magazine: Tell us a little about your life, growing up. Daiane Sodré: Growing up was fun because I have such a big family. I have twelve brothers and sisters and I am the youngest, so there was always someone to play with. MOD: How’d you get your start as a model? Daiane: I was scouted in my little town in the country side of Bahia - Brazil. The first day I arrived in Sao Paulo, I had a casting with an agency from New York. They confirmed me right away and couple of months later, I started my career in New York. MOD: You’ve modeled for several major brands & publications throughout your career. What has been your favorite modeling experience, so far? Daiane: Every job can have its own magic. I’ve been shooting in so many paradisiac locations and experiencing different cultures, that I consider myself a very lucky person. MOD: Who/what are your biggest inspirations? Daiane: My fellow models -- Gisele Bündchen, Adriana Lima (also

from Bahia), Candice Swanepoel, and of course, [the] Victoria’s Secret show. MOD: These days, many social influencers are modeling for fashion/beauty brands and agencies are even casting talent on Instagram. What are your thoughts on the social media phenomenon in today’s fashion industry? Do you personally find the additional platforms beneficial? Daiane: I respect the social media phenomenon in today’s fashion industry. It’s a great way to reach people, companies and get inspiration. It has become a major platform used by so many people to communicate, to do business, etc. In my opinion, it’s here to stay! LOL! MOD: In your experience, what are the biggest challenges of being a model? Daiane: For me, personally, focusing on my career while being so far away from my family has been my biggest challenge. MOD: What are some of the perks? Daiane: I get to travel around the world, experience different cultures and meet new people. MOD: What valuable lessons have you learned from the industry, thus far? Any advice for other aspiring models?

Any diet/exercise tips you’d like to share? Daiane: I work out for minimum one hour every day, I eat very healthy, a lot of greens and no carbs :) MOD: When it’s time to treat yourself, what’s your go-to ‘cheat meal’ or junk food? Daiane: Lasagna MOD: What are some of your favorite TV shows? Daiane: House of Cards, Game of Thrones, Suits, Stranger Things, Prison Break MOD: Do you prefer to binge-watch TV shows or tune in week-to-week? Daiane: I prefer to binge-watch, because I can’t always find time in my schedule to watch the shows when they are on -also, I kill my curiosity at once! LOL! jasmin brown It’s not everyday we see someone succeed by simply being themselves, but comedic actress, Jasmin Brown is proving that it can be done! From self-made social media sensation to full-blown television star, Brown is using her raw, down-to-earth personality to her advantage. Known for her relatable rant videos, Jasmin (a.k.a. @WatchJazzy) has acquired over a half-million Instagram followers, to whom she vents about everything from relationships to social media trends. Now, the Florida native is making her television debut in BET’s new sketch comedy show, 50 Central—and this is only the beginning! We caught up with the rising star to chat about her exciting new TV gig, Toya Turnup, and more! Interview by Shannon Phelps, Photos by Mike Ruiz

hannon Phelps: Tell us a little about your life, growing up. Jasmin Brown: I was born in Takoma Park, Maryland and raised in West Palm Beach, Florida with my immediate family. My mom is the most loving person I’ve ever met in my life. My dad; Hardest working man I know. My brother, Brandon; to this day, he makes me laugh like no other! My sister, Janel; my backbone and strongest supporter. I couldn’t have asked for a better family! Don’t get me wrong, we’re not the Brady Bunch -- we’ve

had our fair share of ups and downs and split ups. [But] our love for each other always brings us back together. Growing up, I was given a lot of creative freedom at a young age. I was able to pick out my own clothes, dress myself, and have imaginary friends -- all which led to me becoming who I am, today. My brother, sister and I used to record ourselves doing skits on a camcorder and my mother never, not once, shot our ideas down. I grew up with the freedom to develop into who I pride myself on being today: Myself. Shannon: When did you realize you wanted to be an actress/ comedian?

Jasmin: Well, I always wanted to be actress. I never saw myself doing comedy, but it sort of fell into my lap. As a child, I would put on shows for my family and play different characters, which is where it started, unbeknownst to me. Shannon: Who/ what are your biggest inspirations, personally & professionally? Jasmin: Professionally, I am inspired by Martin Lawrence, Eddie Murphy and Dave Chappelle, but as a woman I want to be a role model in the light of these professionals. I want other young women to know that we can be funny, unapologetic, and ourselves, while being great. Personally, I am inspired by those that look up to me, because this gives me motivation to wake up every morning and do the things that I am doing. Shannon: How would you describe your sense of humor? Jasmin: Raw. Unapologetic. Relatable. I don’t have jokes to tell, but I have stories and life situations that will make you laugh. This is my life! Shannon: So many people enjoy your hilarious rant videos on Instagram. What inspired you to start posting them? Did you have any idea they would catch on like this? Jasmin: No, I didn’t! I just needed to get something off my chest one day and I decided to vent on Instagram. I used the hashtag #EMWIV, which means ‘Excuse me while I vent.’ [The tag] later turned into #ExcuseMeWhileIVent — I figured nobody would really understand the meaning of EMWIV, so I spelled it out. Shannon: One thing I love about your videos is how real & relatable they are. How do you come up with the material? Do you typically draw from your personal experiences or just general observations? Jasmin: Both. It’s usually personal, but then a general conversation can spark up a topic to talk about. My girlfriends would sometimes suggest a topic to rant on, because it’s something that happened to them. For example, I did a video about your ex receiving a signal when you move on, which was inspired by my girlfriend who’s happily moved on. Shannon: You have a separate Instagram account

dedicated to a character you created named, LaToya James a.k.a. Toya Turnup. What was the inspiration behind Toya? Is she kind of like your alter-ego? Jasmin: Yes! She is definitely my alter-ego. Having Toya on a separate account gave me the freedom to create without boundaries. She was inspired by the women I saw, growing up. We moved to West Palm Beach in a rough neighborhood and there were Toyas everywhere. Not knowing it at the time, she was being created subconsciously. Shannon: You’ve become quite the social media sensation! Would you say your popularity has affected your everyday life? Jasmin: Yes, it’s affected my life, which is very inspiring. I go places and I’m recognized by people that follow me and love watching my videos. Shannon: Have you had any interesting encounters with fans/ followers? Jasmin: Yes, definitely! I’ve encountered fans that have met me and cried. We both cried together, because it’s new to me too. It’s like laughing and crying together, because tears are contagious to me. Shannon: We’re very excited about your new BET show, 50 Central! What can you tell us about it? What can viewers expect when they tune in? Jasmin: New fresh faces presenting a combination of sketch-comedy, hidden camera pranks, ‘man on the street’ segments mixed with music and celebrity guest appearances. Be sure to tune in September 27th at 10:30 PM/ 9:30 PM Central on BET. Shannon: This show is a huge milestone in your career! How’d you land the role? Was your audition process long and drawn-out or was it pretty straightforward? Jasmin: They reached out, I submitted a self-tape audition and was invited for a callback in Los Angeles. Shannon: What’s it like working with 50 Cent? Jasmin: It’s great! He’s very hands-on with this project. He’s also very smart and we’re all learning from him throughout this process. He also mentioned learning a lot from us too, so it’s a great experience overall.

Shannon: What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned from the entertainment industry, thus far? Any advice for other aspiring actors/ comedians? Jasmin: I would tell them to study the craft and don’t practice on the industry. Practicing on the industry means figuring it out, while on the job. Come prepared. Be Prepared. I’ve learned a lot about myself, my craft and most importantly my character. Being humble is key. Shannon: What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced on your journey, thus far? Jasmin: Being a woman in a male-dominated industry and pushing through, while also maintaining my integrity. Shannon: What are your thoughts on the representation of female comedians in today’s media? Do you feel there’s extra pressure on you as a black woman in the industry? Jasmin: There is a shift in the industry that is showing the better side of female actresses, writers and comedians. Issa Rae, Tiffany Haddish, Shonda Rhimes, Viola Davis, Taraji P. Henson, Queen Latifah, Halle Berry, Tichina Arnold and many more. So, there’s no pressure, but rather a path that I feel was paved for me to create my own lane. Shannon: Speaking of Tiffany Haddish, Queen Latifah, and Issa Rae, Girls Trip and Insecure have been huge steps forward for black women in comedy! Do you think the success of these titles will lead to more diversity in the future? Jasmin: Of course! And I hope to create my own movies and star in them. Girls Trip grossed over $100M in the box office, which proves that the future is female! Issa Rae doing what she is doing with Insecure, again, proves the future is female! So, I agree that the success of these titles are huge steps forward for black women in comedy. Shannon: So, what’s next for you, Jasmin? Any new projects in the works? Jasmin: I’m moving to Los Angeles and I’ll be there for a while. Toya Turnup being on her own tour! The Turnup Tour may be coming to city near you! Our first date is September 26th in Philadelphia, PA, then we’re in Richmond, VA October 11th and Virginia Beach, VA October 12th. Also, stay tuned for upcoming projects

that are currently in the works. Shannon: Awesome! You have amazing skin, by the way. What are some of your favorite skincare products? Jasmin: Thank you! I’m always trying something new, but I’m currently using Boscia, Origins, Fresh and Tata Harper. Shannon: Your hair is also very beautiful & healthy! Any haircare tips you care to share? Jasmin: I’m currently working on my own haircare line and it’s coming soon! FLOURISH by Jasmin Brown. Can’t wait for you ladies to try it! Men too. LOL Shannon: What are some of your guilty pleasures? Jasmin: Beauty products and sneakers Shannon: If you could only keep three beauty products in your bag, what would they be? Jasmin: Sunscreen, concealer, lip balm, and edge control, if I could have four products. In that order! Shannon: What are some of your fashion essentials? Jasmin: Sneakers and mini backpacks! Shannon: What’s the last show you binge-watched? Jasmin: HBO’s Insecure Shannon: What’s the funniest movie you’ve ever seen? Jasmin: Rush Hour 2 Shannon: What’s your favorite song/ album right now? Jasmin: “DNA”/ DAMN. By Kendrick Lamar Shannon: Tell us an interesting fact about yourself. Jasmin: When I was younger, I used to get $10 allowance every week that I would save up to buy a cheap wig and disposable camera. [I’d] pretend to be other people and put on talent shows for my family. Follow Jasmin on Instagram & Twitter @WatchJazzy, and check her out on ‘50 Central’ Wednesdays at 10:30 PM on BET!

Peyton

list Peyton List isn’t one for labels. Sure, we’ve watched her grow up as spunky teen, Emma Ross on Jessie & Bunk’d -- but she’s far beyond the typical Disney darling. From editing her own lifestyle/ beauty column, to performing her own action movie stunts, this multi-talented 19-year-old is clearly plotting her own course. Last fall, Peyton switched gears in the dark, dystopian thriller, The Thinning. Now, she’s poised for her biggest role yet, in the dramatic book-to-film adaptation, Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet. Between projects, the outspoken starlet uses her social media platforms to express her passion for issues like women empowerment and animal welfare. Here, Peyton gives the scoop on Anthem, shares her favorite Instagram trends, and more! Photos by Mike Ruiz, Interview by Shannon Phelps

hannon Phelps: You’re from Red Hook, Brooklyn. Tell us a little about your life there. Peyton List: Red Hook gave me such a great childhood. There were tons of kids living on our block -- we could ride our bikes to the pier with a view of the Statue of Liberty.

he really wanted a boy, so I cried when I found out I had lost the bet and my mom was having a baby boy. However, after the fact, I’m really happy because they taught me how to hold my own, and to be a leader. I was always the one who stepped up to take charge if we had the house alone, and it is funny how that role never really changes. I never ever felt inferior to my brothers -- the women in my family are pretty fierce leaders.

Shannon: You grew up with two brothers, Spencer & Phoenix. What was it like being the only girl in the mix? Peyton: Spencer and I made bets on what our sibling Phoenix would turn out to be. I really wanted a girl,

Shannon: What’s your relationship like with your twin brother, Spencer? Any weird or funny twin stories? Peyton: Spencer is my womb mate and built-in best friend. I always thought I was older, growing up, and

would refer to him as baby. For a while, I learned to talk before him and I would translate his baby gibberish to my parents. Shannon: You moved from NY to LA at a pretty young age. What was that transition like for you? Peyton: My mom got us a place in the heart of Hollywood, one mile away from where we filmed Jessie, right up the street from Madame Tussaud’s, and I think we assumed that would be a nice place to stay. [But] we quickly learned Hollywood is not the place to be and it was not as glamorous as everyone says at all. Ha! So our first place was a learning experience, and on top of that, we were both pretty homesick missing [the rest of] my fam, but I think I learned you have to make sacrifices in order to “follow your dream.” So I sucked it up and my family, after about a year, moved to LA, once it looked like the show was a success. So grateful for them moving everything so we could all be together. Shannon: What are some things you miss about New York? What are some things you love about LA? Peyton: I miss the energy and the pace of NYC. Everything is much more laid back in LA -- now, I understand the phrase “anything can happen in a New York minute.” I miss the Italian food and bagels in NY, but love the acai bowls and avocado toast life in LA. Los Angeles has a lot more space -- I never had a closet in NY, whereas in LA, I turned my entire basement into one. In NY, I feel like people put their headphones in and don’t really want to converse, because everyone has somewhere to be, so I was a little taken aback by the amount of random chats that will strike up with just about anyone at the Trader Joes checkout or the barista at my favorite coffee shop. Friendliness is something I kind of have grown accustomed to in LA. I went back to NY for Fashion Week and someone at the restaurant asked me how my day was and I asked him the same and he actually paused, looked at me for a second, and said “thanks for asking, no one ever asks me that.” Shannon: Who are some of your mentors/ inspirations in the industry? Peyton: I’ve really just admire so many females who are creating their own projects, producing, acting, and/or directing. The creator of our show, Pamela Eells O’Connell, she is such a strong, hilarious leader, and creative genius. I also just worked briefly with the choreographer Mandy Moore on a movie I did, Valley Girl -- she really knows to take charge, and doesn’t put

up with any BS, not to mention is super talented. Shannon: You’ve pretty much grown up before our eyes on Jessie & Bunk’d. What are some of your favorite on-set memories from over the years? Peyton: The cast and crew on set are my family, and we have all seen each other grow up/go through so much. One of my favorite memories is having Michelle Obama on the show, and almost fainting when I met her. Secret Service had been scouting the set for weeks, and I had no idea. (They are that good, ha!) We were all always getting to do insane gags -- I got to dumpster dive, get cake shot out of a canon at me, and fall into a giant pit of pie filling colored to look like mud. Shannon: As a Disney star, do you ever feel pressure to project a certain image or live your life a certain way? Peyton: I think I put a lot of pressure on myself, and parents will sometimes thank me for being a good role model, which makes me question myself, because I want to set a good example. At the same time, I’m a teenager who is going to make mistakes, because it is human nature. Shannon: You starred in The Thinning, last year, which was a pretty intense dystopian thriller. What was it like for you as an actress, going straight from Bunk’d to the darker tones of that film? How’d you get in the right headspace? Peyton: I worked quite a bit beforehand with the director Michael Gallagher, and we discussed a lot about Laina and ran scenes together. Having that prep time with him while wrapping up Bunk’d helped, because you are right, it was a lot darker than Disney. I also just spent a lot of time alone and in my own head, because I feel like my character, Laina was isolated in a lot of ways. [She] had the responsibility of providing for her family after her mom’s death and never let herself let loose. Shannon: I read that you actually did your own stunts for the movie! Tell us a little more about that. What was the toughest stunt you had to do? Peyton: I did as much as I could convince them to let me do. I think the toughest part was convicing them I could lift Logan out of the pool or get picked up and thrown against a locker. Shannon: Your new movie, Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet, is based on a young-adult novel by Joanne Proulx. Is there any extra pressure that comes with adapting material from a book? Do you feel more compelled to do your character justice, etc.?

Peyton: There is a pressure when playing a character, because I’m sure as an author you have a very specific idea in your mind of what the character should be. It was reassuring to be able to talk to Joanne after the scenes and get her feedback. At the end of the movie, she signed a book for me and wrote a message that was so kind it made me tear up. She basically said that my character, Faith was her as a teenager, and gave her stamp of approval on my performance. Shannon: You’re already developing quite a range of roles. Are there any types of characters you’d like to play in the future? Any particular genre you want to try? Peyton: Just this past hiatus from Bunk’d, I’ve had the opportunity to shoot three different films, all vastly different. A drama, a musical, and a comedy. I hope to play a superhero one day, or a role where I get to fight and kick ass. Shannon: What are some of your favorite places to travel & why? Peyton: I just went to Italy over the summer and did a road trip throughout north of Rome for about two weeks, and I had the most amazing time, eating the best pasta I’ve ever had and seeing the most beautiful architecture, art, and sunflower fields. Shannon: You’ve got a huge following on social media! Do you typically put a lot of thought into your posts, or are you more of the post-as-you-go type? Peyton: Depends on the post, honestly, I just always have to make sure it is something I’m proud of, and something that won’t haunt me, years later. I cringe at a lot of posts from when I was younger. I guess that is what happens when you get on a Disney show at 12. Shannon: Tips for the perfect selfie? Peyton: Good natural light is key for me, angles, and a cool background. Shannon: Any interesting fan encounters? Peyton: There have been a lot of interesting people I’ve met, through the years. One time, it was this girl’s 21st birthday, at a rollerskating rink I love to go to, and she asked me to sign her boob. I honestly can’t remember if I went through with it or not, but if she asked me again now, I would. Shannon: As an actress, you’re constantly having to wear makeup and switch up your hairstyles. How do you keep your skin and hair healthy, in spite of your profession? Peyton: Honestly, doesn’t depend on the amount of makeup, it depends on my hormonal and stress state, at the moment. It is something out of my control, at this point. I do everything I can to clean my face and use all kinds of different face masks when I travel. I also have to remember to hydrate constantly.

Shannon: What are some beauty items you can’t leave your house without? Peyton: I never leave without my coconut lip balm and a light layer of coverage. Shannon: There are always new makeup looks floating around Instagram. What’s the worst makeup trend you’ve seen recently? What’s a trend you can’t wait to try? Peyton: The worst trend I’ve seen recently is the wavy brow -- I don’t think I could ever pull that off. I have been loving all of the stars and flowers on faces, like we did in this shoot. I also love all of the colorful eye makeup and graphic eyes. Shannon: What’s your go-to lip color? Peyton: My go-to lip color is a 90s brown-lined lip. Shannon: Where do you typically turn for fashion inspo? Peyton: I’m always scrounging Tumblr, magazines, and Instagram . I then take all of my findings and create a Pinterest page with all of my favorites. I have a board in my room that is a huge collage, full of cutouts from magazines. Shannon: What’s the biggest beauty/ fashion risk you’ve ever taken? Peyton: At the MTV Awards recently, I went for a mermaid, multi-colored eye, and then at the Harper’s Bazaar party during Fashion Week, the theme was punk rocker, so I went a little bold with the entire look. My outfit actually ripped on the way over, so I had to rock my slip dress underneath my outfit. Shannon: If you had to pick one style of jeans to wear everyday, what would it be? Peyton: I practically wear the same type of jean every day, a high-waisted skinny jean. Shannon: What are your favorite places to shop? Peyton: Thrift and vintage stores, Gucci, Instagram stores, Etsy, and then whenever I travel, I find local brands to whatever city I’m in at the moment. Local designers are always pushing the envelope. Shannon: One piece of fashion advice you think every girl should know: Peyton: I say, don’t dress for anyone else (seems obvious) but if you feel good in it, then it is going to look good. I think it is all about how it makes you feel and who it turns you into. If I’m going into an audition for a confident character, I’m going to wear heels, my favorite jeans, and a red top. However you dress is just a way of showing how you feel or who you are. I have never had a set style, it depends on who I want to be that day.
