n tribute to Frida Kahlo’s Self Portrait with Cropped Hair, May Lin Le Goff reimagines a contemporary Frida Kahlo. Starring Catalina Nicora (MC2 Model Management) as the famously tortured artist, we see a different Frida- one sans the flowing hair and Mexican traditional dress. Painted shortly after her separation from the artist Diego Rivera, Frida renounces all femininity and seeks to regain her power by painting herself short haired
(scissors in hand) in a man’s shirt, shoes, and oversized suit. To bring this newfound strength to life, Karina Sharif styles the new Frida in masculine silhouettes by Madeline Gruen, Alexis Ulichny, Shumpei Okamoto & Andrea Nieto, amongst others. Stacked against vibrant colors that were certainly no stronger to the artist’s commanding brush, the crucial choppy locks are designed by Julia Elena, with bronzed sun kissed skin and an updated unibrow by Eric Vosburg.

FASHION design
Ukranian designer Svetlana Bevza, with her brand BEVZA, has become known for her minimalist & aristocratic style.
Svetlana
bevza OD: Tell us about where you grew up. Svetlana: I was born and grew up in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, a wonderful green city.
Although, at that time I thought that a fashion house is a building with wardrobes where young women lived...
MOD: Were you raised in a creative
friend. She even bought it for $50!
household? Svetlana: Yes, I was. My mother has a musical education. She often played the piano for me and she sings beautifully. My grandfather was a painter and my grandmother was an actress. I was raised with good music, movies, etc.
MOD: Have you always been interested
in fashion? What inspired you to become a designer? Svetlana: I dreamt about becoming a fashion designer from when I was a child. I loved to paint and I always drew sketches of girls in dresses and pictures of fashion houses. I never wanted to become a painter, though. When I was 5, I told my mum that I wanted to have a fashion house.
MOD: What was the first thing you ever designed and created?
Svetlana: It was a printed top for my MOD: What designers did you most admire growing up?
Svetlana: I was born in a post Soviet
Union country and there was a lack of any information about fashion. All I remember is that I liked the fashion of the 70s and the elegance of this period.
MOD: Tell us about BEVZA. What defines your brand? Svetlana: In just a few words – BEVZA is a minimalistic style label with its must- have concept of the white dress. All the outfits are clean, strict cut, with minimal details, hidden furniture - and the color white dominates. MOD: How would you describe your
design aesthetic? Svetlana: I like to play with minimalism. This style has borders and that is why it is so interestiing to create something new within these limits. I like when the clothes make the person, not when the person makes the clothes. I love to play with white. This is the purest, most energetic color. You are always somehow new when wearing white.
MOD: Where do you find inspiration for your collections? Svetlana: Everywhere. I don’t search for
inspiration. I prefer when it comes naturally. The world around me is so beautiful; so many shapes, textures, and things happening can be inspiring.
MOD: What is one of your favorite pieces from your collections? Svetlana: The white coat! (from the FW13 collection) MOD: If you could design for any celebrity, who would be your celebrity muse?
FASHION design Svetlana: I would love to dress Tilda Swinton and Kate Blanchett.
MOD: Where can we find your collec-
tions?
Svetlana: In Moscow (Tsvetnoi Central Market and Mood Swing’s), in London (Rtister), and from SS14 we are represented in Italy and Belorussia.
MOD: What stores would you love to see your collections in, in the future? Svetlana: Of course, I wish to see BEVZA in such famous stores as Colette, Dover Street Market, Corso Como, as well as to open BEVZA stores all over the world. MOD: What has been the biggest highlight of your career so far, and why?
Svetlana: I think that it was [receiving] the award of Best Womenswear Designer of 2012, a national award in Ukraine. It’s a big responsibility.
MOD: What are your goals for next 5 years? Where would you like to see yourself & your line? Svetlana: In all the stores I mentioned before. I want to ensure BEVZA is in high demand internationally! MOD: If you weren’t a fashion designer, what else would you be doing, career wise? Svetlana: I’m happy with my choice, so I never think about other professions. Maybe I would like to try acting in movies. And if my grandmothers were persistant when I was a child, I would have become a ballet dancer. They dream about it and I studied professional ballet, but it was such a long time ago. MOD: What advice would you give to someone trying to break into the fashion industry? Svetlana: The most important thing is to develop a unique brand concept from the very beginning of your career - to think how one’s new label will differ from the others, and how it will attract attention. MOD: What is the best way for people to connect with you? Are you on any social media? Svetlana: The best way for any work requests is to write to us through our office email adress, which you can find on our website. You can also connect with us on Facebook!
