tamar: Bloom inside
Ukrainian womenswear label, TAMAR, was founded by Tamriko Keburia and named after the Georgian medieval queen. The Fall/Winter 2016 collection highlights the concept of ‘Blooming from inside’, exploring nature’s ability to compound several contrasting colors and textures in one creation. The color palette uses Pleurotus ostreatus mushroom as a reference point and includes navy black, blush, mauve, electric blue, African violet, and rose cream. OD Magazine: Tell us a little bit about your life, growing up. (Where you’re from, what school(s) you attended, etc.) Tamriko Keburia: I was born and raised on seashores of the Black Sea in Western Georgia – the place notable as the destination of the Argonauts. I believe that my character was shaped by the energy of sun and sea – that’s why you’ll never find me sitting back, doing nothing. When I was 15, my family moved to Kyiv, Ukraine and this city became my second home. Since then, half of me [has represented] Ukrainian culture. I always loved visual arts and stunning visual content and attended graphic studio, photography school, etc. That is another thing I’m found of – learning something new.
you decide that this was what you wanted to do? Tamriko: In my childhood, I used to draw beautiful dresses and my dream was to create the most beautiful garments in the world. When I grew older, I started to create clothing for myself – and I wore it proudly. Being a fashion designer was my childhood dream, but I dared to fulfill it only after spending around 10 years in advertising business. After managing international accounts for big famous brands, I found many similarities between fashion and advertising business – both are about creating, managing creative process and making it profitable.
MOD: How did you get your start as a designer? When did
MOD: How would you describe the aesthetic of your work?
MOD: Who/ what are some of your greatest inspirations in life and/or design? Tamriko: The biggest inspiration is nature and human behavior.
Tamriko: I’d call it reinventing the contemporary chic. I want to create pieces that would make a modern day woman feel and convey her sense of dignity, grace and appeal in the urban world. MOD: How did you develop this style? What drove you in this particular artistic direction? Tamriko: I find inspiration for my style in nature and modern architecture – it is what makes me produce a gush of ideas and concepts. Modern civilization creates a big gap between man and nature – maybe thoughts about this led me to creating the aesthetic of nature brought into modern civilization. MOD: What’s your favorite piece from your latest collection? Why? Tamriko: My favorite piece is the black coat with volumetric sleeves. When you dress it on, you feel yourself as in a different dimension. It reveals a new angle of your personality, which is always exciting, as our personalities are so diverse and unexplored. I am really happy when people try it on and all of them have exactly the same unexpected mimics on the face. I love it. MOD: If you could design for any celebrity, who would be your celebrity muse? Why? Tamriko: I have a portrait of my ideal consumer and I call her The Queen of Metropolis. Finding the personality among celebrities, I’d choose Laetitia Casta and Tilda Swinton. They both represent a different dimension of sensuality and have natural beauty, shaped by the modern metropolis. I absolutely love their style and those two [contrasting personalities] always help me with finding the balance in everything I create - but sometimes Tilda wins, and [other] times Laetitia. MOD: Many artists have certain conditions in which they work, to help their creative process -- whether it’s listening to music, working outdoors, etc. What’s yours? Tamriko: Everything worthy comes only when the mind is quiet. Music is always starting point, but the main images come either before I go sleep (lying in the bed) or I can wake up at four in the morning and start drawing before the world wakes up. For example, if I listen Hans Zimmer’s music, I go more deeply into lines and images -- and when I listen to Radio 1 Essential Mix or sounds of nature I go more light and sensual. All I create ends up in the “quiet room” anyway, where I sort, shape and finalize all ideas. MOD: If you weren’t a fashion designer, what else would you be doing, career wise? Tamriko: Contemporary art.
MOD: What are some of the most notable ways you’ve evolved as a designer, since the start of your career? Tamriko: I learned how to successfully split creative process and business management. MOD: What’s been the highlight of your career, so far? Tamriko: [My] first collection was shown during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Kiev and Pure London, where I got first notices and orders. With the same collection, I had an interview with BBC World News. For the first 6 months, we have around 10 stockists and happy loyal clients. MOD: Where would you like to see yourself and your designs in the future? Tamriko: I want all Queens of Metropolises around the world to have an opportunity to buy my clothes in monobrand stores and wear them with dignity. MOD: What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned on your journey in fashion, thus far? Tamriko: The main lesson I learned is about planning and communication. It’s very important to create decent collection plans, production, distribution, communication and financial plans and follow them strictly. Otherwise, product development 2-4 times a year will become impossible and wash you out of the fashion cycle. Plan properly and follow the plans. MOD: Any advice for young, aspiring fashion designers out there? Tamriko: Definitely. There is one very important [bit of] advice: if you look around, there are so many designers, designs and styles, very crowded and very diverse - just make sure that your creation stands out and is relevant for your target audience. Always ask yourself - “Why should this person buy my clothes when he/she can easily buy the same or even better elsewhere, from notable brands at the same price?” etc. Just stand out and be relevant. And of course, find a very talented managing partner who will be managing all of your business processes! Remember that the great design is just 15% of the successful brand. MOD: Tell us a fun fact about yourself. Tamriko: When I was a child, I would steal and hide all sweets under the bed in my “treasure box”. MOD: Where can people find you and your work, online?
