There is something about a leather jacket that just screams sexy rocker chick! You can roughen up a feminine outfit; go all out sexy in black skinny jeans, tight singlet and your favorite black leather jacket, or maybe biker chick is more your style, in which case pair your jacket with tight leat- her pants, ankle boots and a grungy tee. There are zips, chains, buckles, studs and quilted patterns; hoods, tight and loose fit- ting, faux and real, and a whole range of colors and different styles to suit everyone. Leather jackets are always a key trend thr- oughout fashion. This is one investment you won’t regret spending the dollars on.

Dress them up, dress them down; buy skinny, wide, bootcut, ¾ style, flare, high- rise, low-rise and even jegg- ings! When it comes to buying jeans, there are often issues that come with it - being too short to too tall, having no booty to an overly cur- vaceous one, muffin tops in low-rise jeans to the dreaded high rise ‘’mum jean’’ look. MOD Tell us a bit about your

background and where you grew up in Australia.

Samantha I grew up in Port

Macquarie on the mid north coast of NSW. I went to Port Macquarie High school & didn’t attend univ- ersity. I moved to Sydney and at 21, started the label – I was completely self-taught. This was a very ambit- ious and possibly naĂŻve move, as I had no idea of the challenges ahead!

M You turned down a career in modeling to start your own access- ories business -- what made you decide to take this step?

S While modeling gave me a great

insight into the world of design and fashion, I ultimately wanted to have creative c control, and be the one behind rather than in front of the camera. Modeling has a very small shelf life and I never had the passion for it. I think I was destined

to have my own business because I have a strong stubborn streak of doing things a certain way!

is all about the SW customer. Our central focus is around creating pieces that have a wearable luxury. luxur The great thing about jewelry is that the overall look comes from how the wearer styles it. I believe the SW woman is extremely intell- igent, modern and savvy. We treat you like a fashion stylist –- sugg- esting ways to wear the product. p It’s not uncommon to receive images of the same ring, worn by three totally different women –- it is this versatility that’s been a real success factor in the brand’s jour- ney. The SW customer wants to be part of the conversation; not spoken ‘to.’ This is evident by our deep engagement online allowing us to listen, converse and respond to our consumer.

Had you always held a keen interest for jewelry design? design as young girl and made des- igns for my mum’s local clothing store. I credit the absolute basics of jewelry making to classes my mum enrolled me in as a primary school student and I attended hol- iday beading classes at the local craft shop. Later, Late I started making jewelry for a friend in school and when girls in other grades heard about it I started charging them! I was always drawn to the creative, to telling a story through an expre- ssive form and jewelry just happ- ened to be the medium. As a brand you’re a story teller -- that is one of my most favorite things about the business -- the branding and com- munications. I could talk about this topic for days! I am so passionate

M What inspires you in life? S Inspiration is everywhere. I’m

inspired by learning, by experienc- ing, by conversations. I’m inspired by my travels; whether it is the afternoon sun set against the New York skyline, the Mexican dusk with its soft peachy blush shades or rich Moroccan architecture -- I am captured by life’s beauties in general! I also take inspiration from business people that are successful in both their field, but also the peo- ple game: the way they develop, sustain and enrich their relationship to achieve business success and creativity.

M How does it feel to have gained

such a ‘star status’ in your own right as a designer?

S Of course, peer recognition is

very satisfying. While the brand is my name, I by default collect all the praise, but the truth is the brand has eclipsed me. It is because of an AMAZING amount of people that what we do happens and continues to expand; without them, the Sam- antha Wills brand would be non- existent. The biggest buzz comes from when a client contacts us and says that she receives so many compliments and the empowerment she feels when she wears her SW piece. This eclipses any other kind of ‘star status.’

I could have anticipated the diffic- ulties of starting out on your own at such a young age. However, if it wasn’t for my diligence and naiv- ety I would never have taken the leap and been where we are today. The transition from f a ‘label’ to a ‘brand’ has been a long but rewar- ding process. Our international expansion and our celebrity follo- wing are a tribute to this success.

Samantha Wills involve?

S

A day in the life of Samantha Wills is definitely busy, but never boring! If I am in NYC, I try to get out and about in the morning, travelling everywhere from Soho to lower Manhattan and back. I try to walk a different di street every day; you just never know what you will come across! I usually block out weeks at a time to design as I find it easier to immerse myself in design. Afternoons are spent on marketing and communications concepts for upcoming projects, p and then on to Skype and email with my Australian team. Amongst that could be PR interviews, meet- ings, sourcing, styling, it really is a mixed bag! Eating and laughing late at night with friends is the per- fect end to a crazy day. da

M How do you spend your down time?

S

I love to read and to learn new things. I find that reading is the only thing that stops my brain from thinking about work! I love to catch up with friends and spend quality time with them. While most of my travel is for work, I do love to just escape with no work agenda -– this is rare but very divine!

M What is your most cherished wardrobe staple?

S

I can’t go past a fresh, crisp white tee and a great pair of dark jeans. With this outfit I can access- orize in almost any way. I always feel confident and ready to walk out the door in style. I use my acc- essories to transition my wardrobe from day to night. When I do dress up you can always spot me in a bronze or champagne colored seq- uin! I think I was born under a disco ball, as I just love under- stated sparkle! And definitely a cocktail ring, day or night.

M What is your favorite season and why?

S Without a doubt, the Australian summer closely followed by the New York winter! Two very ext- reme seasons, but in summer I live in a bikini, denim shorts, and thongs. While the NYC winters are harsh, with fresh snow. And fairy lights are magical and ench- anting.

M What are your hopes for the

future and for the SAMANTHA WILLS brand?

S My main focus right now is on

our current expansion to the USA and other international markets. This is driven by our growing demand off shore for the SAM- ANTHA WILLS brand. I am also really excited about the launch of our Bridal range, which will see the brand extend into a romantic and elegant new category. We’re also looking at creating SW pop-up stores and, eventually, flagship stores. We can’t wait to bring our

unique brand environment to our customers worldwide!

M Lastly, what advice can you give to budding designers?

S I know it’s cliché, but never

give up. Drive, perseverance and hard work are the only way to suc- ha cess and are the foundation for everything I have achieved in my life and work. If you have a pass- ion for what you are designing, you can go anywhere.

SHOES Shoes glorious shoes! Where would a woman be without them? They are the cherries on top of every fashionista's cake. So what's hot in shoes this winter? In terms of color scheme, the ones to look out for are: black, stone, beige, burgundy, dark blue, deep violet, chocolate, red, khaki and metallic. The brighter hues of spring and summer are scarce as winter’s moody and rich tones settle in. Material wise, we are talking about leather, patent, reptile skins, suede and satin, lace and even some occasional fur. On a side note, you may be pleased to know both round and pointy toes are popular this season, so no matter what your preference you will still remain on trend. Platforms and wedges from spring have made their way over into winter, with designs a touch more on the modest and elegant end as opposed to the vibrant and sometimes unusual styles of spring 2011. Lacing is more aggressive and ‘sexified’ in winter and you can expect to see buckles from past seasons making a comeback. In terms of heel styles, chunky and spike are the pick of the bunch. Chunky heels bring us the comfort and confidence, with designs rang- ing from round toe pumps to rocker chick ankle booties, while the killer stiletto heel gives women that feeling of glamour and sexiness in styles from satin to patent and leather and suede.

Every woman’s staple in her fashion diet is a bag! It’s the daily tote-able secret treasure chest that only she has the key to open. From shoulder bags to large totes, clutches and mini purses, a woman can never have too many bags! Nude, floral, combination colors, chain handles and landmark prints were hot on the Moschino Fall/Winter 2011 runway this year. This gives us a general insight into what you can expect to be wearing on your arms this season. We have seen nude in abundance through clothing, shoes and jewelry - bags are no exception. The nude color can range from sandy beige, dusty pinks to peaches and cream. This shade is chic, simple and very versatile. Floral prints will add a touch of femininity to any outfit and will brighten up a cold winter’s day, while the color blocking trend of spring still reigns and will transfer over into winter. Chanel inspired chain handbags add le French sophis- tication and landmark printed totes such as the Eiffel Tower are the perfect statement to a classy and demure ensemble. MOD

JEWELRY A perfect piece of jewelry can instantly transform an outfit from day to night. Sometimes all you need is a statement necklace, a cocktail ring or a set of chunky bangles to finish off a look. Jewelry adds style, glamour and sophist- ication and plays a key role in ‘getting dressed up’. After all, what woman doesn’t love a little bit (or a lot) of bling? This winter, look out for these trends: Bold Statements - Lots of big, colorful and slightly unusual pieces that will stand out. Oversized bangles, long earrings and exaggerated necklaces are hot picks this season. Metal - It's all about solid, cold, hard metal, in the form of structured pieces to oversized asymmetrical and angular shapes. Motifs - Dare to mix and match the elements, such as animal, floral and religious motifs and combine them to add to an outfit that is uniquely you. It’s all about getting creative with this one! Fringe - Fringing is back! Think of nar- row feathers, tassels and little bits of fur. Layering/Stacking - The more arm candy you have the more fashionable you’ll look! Mix them up with round bracelets, thick, thin, chunky, wooden or metal. Giant Retro Rings - Huge cocktail rings are one of the hottest trends for winter and are a great statement piece. They make a perfect addition to any outfit and double up as a weapon if anyone in a bar is annoying you – but I’m sure classy ladies such as yourselves would never resort to such things!

HATS

Emma Smith

Hats are forever a common accessory in the cold as well as hot months. They are perfect for hiding a multitude of hair sins, from a dye job gone horribly wrong to greasy unwashed locks. They also bring warmth and are a cute fashion accessory to adorn our heads with in the winter months. Wide brim (aka Amish hats) are quite popular this season. They bring a touch of boho-chic and retro style. Wear them with 70s style flared jeans and loose blouses with bow tie necks, or add a vintage touch to a modern day pencil skirt, furs coats and high boots. Fedora hats are chic, elegant and stylish. They create an instant hit of fashion sophistication. There is something very ‘’Hollywood Star’’ about the Fedora hat. Does anyone else feel instantly transformed into Michael Jackson or Justin Timberlake when they put one on? Yes? No? Just me? - Anyway, there is such a wide variety of styles, material, patterns and finishes, you’re sure to find one that is to your liking. It’s just about coordinating the right one with the right outfit. 60’s Vintage Pill Box hats have also made a splash on the winter scene. These tiny adornments come in a variety of colors and prints and can easily compliment any 60s inspired modern day outfit as this era is widely popular for the cool season. And last but not least, we can't forget out winter woolly staples of beanies, fur and knit hats. Opt for faux fur where possible, add a cutesy touch to your ensemble with winter hats that have poms poms or ears, and for extra warmth try out some over sized baggy beanies in a variety of materials, shades and prints. Immortals: Every girl fantasises being a Greek goddess. Starring Freida Pinto of Slumdog Millionaire, Immortals, a stylish mythological film from the producers of 300, should spawn a Grecian style, which has been promi- nent on this years runways. The film appears to feature darker tones including deep, blood red, and brown, neutral tones. Immortals invites you to indulge in a Gre- cian inspired dress. The dress on Freida Pinto has a sexy but sophisticated almost-there high slit, a big runway trend this season. You can also accessorize with gold accented jewelry and easily achieve the effortless, curly hairstyle. MOD

Winter 2012

A Dangerous Method: Kiera Knightley, who made the emerald green gown from Atonement famous in 2008, is back in this Victorian-era film with eye candy Viggo Mortensen and Michael Fassbender. Feast your eyes on the fashion, too. Many of this season’s trends originate from Victorian-era fashion. Amongst them include lace, which was seem on the runways for this season, along with maxi-skirts and choker necklaces. All easy, simple pieces that can be easily translated into an effortless, modern, yet historically (and cinematically) inspired look.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo: While not particularly aesthetically pleasing on a mainstream level, Lisbeth Salander’s style is nothing short of awesome! She expresses herself through her clothing, which is every woman’s goal anyway. anywa With her entirely black ensembles, ripped T-shirts, combat boots and leather jackets, Salander’s punk look, reminiscent of the early 90s, will surely inspire the confident, independent, feisty women.Be sure to pair with black heavy eyeliner, eyeline a baditude, and a hottie like Daniel Craig.

In Time: Futuristic trends are sweeping the runways and the theatres. In Time takes place in the future, where every human being doesn’t age past 25, but everyone is allotted a certain amount of time to live, seemingly dependent on status. This shiny, action and fashion-packed movie stars some of the most stylish actors in Hollywood, including Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried and Olivia Wilde. The film’s trailer catches glimpes of sparkly costumes but Amanda Sey- fried’s simple, fitted black dress is a definite must-have.

The Hunger Games: Katniss Everdeen isn’t necessarily a fashion icon, especially because she doesn’t care. But “The Girl Who Was On Fire” sure gave some inspiring and attainable, modern looks. Her signature hunting outfit consists of just a jacket, simple top and baggy pants, reminiscent of the androgynous look. Many of Ms. Everdeen’s Eve outlandish costumes won’t be seen until The Hunger Games hits theaters, but there’s a reason she’s called “The Girl Who Was On Fire” -- but don’t try that concept too literally at home. Beauty

Trends

Flawless complexions, pinkish-nude lips and barely there blush. It’s all about going au natural and letting your true beauty shine through. The nude look is fresh, simple and a dream makeup trend for the woman who is strapped for time. The aim is to enh- ance your natural beauty by using as little makeup as possible but still managing to achieve that radiant -- “Yes, I really am this naturally hot”-- look! To create your natural look you’ll need a perfect mat- ching foundation suited to your skin-tone, neutral colored eye shadow e.g. beige, sand, or taupe, a hint of pink blush applied to the apples of your cheeks, some mascara to make those eyes pop, and to finish the look off, add a touch of clear or nude glossy lac- quer or lipstick. Voila! Sexy, care-free and natural!

This trend stained the lips of runway models in many fashion shows, from Miu Miu, Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent. Bold, bright and dark, orange to blood red, and wine to deep purple; embrace your inner gothic vixen or Twilight vampire (it’s a rule you can’t speak about vampires without mentioning Twilight) and pair your sultry pout with a pale complexion and nat- ural eyes. MOD

Winter 2012

Smokey eyes have always been a makeup trend no matter what the season. But this winter brings a lit- tle change up with the addition of varying colors and shades used to create a sexy, smoldering and sultry eye. Think of navy, deep ruby red, purples, dark brown and emerald green to create a heavy smokey look; or opt for lighter shades such as lilac, gold or paler metallics.

Eyebrows define our face and their shape can instantly transform your appearance. Their power to complete a makeup look shouldn’t be underestimated. This winter is all about having a nice thick set of eyebrows and is something every woman ought to try out. In an instant it can magically make you appear younger! It involves nothing more than letting your eyebrow hairs grow out and allowing the natural shape to emerge. Simply pluck away the strays, fill in the gaps with a brow pencil and/ or shadow and you’re all set to go!

From winged cats eyes, to thick and a little odd smud- ged lines nearly covering the entire lid, runway shows for winter 2011/2012 were chock full of beauty looks created solely using eyeliner. One key trend for this season is the Graphic Eyeliner Trend. This look invol- ves a softened shimmery base, where the lids are prepped with a neutral shadow in taupe, pale pink or nude and smudged black eyeliner extends out into strong a cat’s eye shape.

Exactly how long have you been blogging?

K

CakedCulture turns 1 year old on December 4th! I can’t believe it’s been a year already. In some ways it seems like it’s been longer and others like it hasn’t been long at all. I was blogging on Tumblr for a cou- ple months before that though.

M

What are some of the biggest challenges of having your own fas- hion website?

K

Consistency has been my big- gest challenge! Sometimes it gets hard to blog every day or stay on schedule. Also, as a new blogger it’s easy to compare yourself with bloggers who have been in the game longer. My challenge is stay- ing true to me. It’s so easy to want to compare myself to the fashion bloggers that do it full time and have someone there to take all of their photos. Working a full time job and blogging is a challenge in itself and I’m trying to make it the best way I can.

M

What are some of the perks?

M

What are some other cool things you do, besides running such an awesome site!

K

Beyond seeing CakedCulture grow, my biggest dream is to own an art gallery. I love art and can pic- ture it perfectly. For those familiar with the Atlanta area I want it to be in Little 5 Points. Can’t you picture it?! Cross your fingers for me! One day.

Go Gradual: Don't try to go from Turkey to Tofurky overnight! Bec- oming vegan is a gradual thing. If you've been a meat lover for years, your body is used to this fare and won't appreciate your rebellion from the norm! So, make one night a week “vegan nightâ€? and work up from there! 2. Change Your Thinking: Don't think of everything you can't have! Instead think of creative ways to recreate your favorite family dishes with a vegan twist! 3. Get Help! Check out your local bookstores or get online to find vegan recipes that sound mouth- watering and give them a try. You might be surprised to know there are even vegan cooking classes in your area too! 4. Hit the Stores! Here's a good excuse to go shopping, improving your diet and learning something new! Try hitting your local health food stores often times they have a lot of great meat alternatives, such as Seitan (which works great in a Butternut Quesidilla!) Also, many

grocery stores have a health-food section filled with vegan options. 5. Dear Dairy, I miss you! Don't bemoan your old love! I'm a baker so when I first became vegan I thought I couldn't survive without dairy. That is until I found soy, almond, hemp and rice milk. These dairy alternatives are fortified with vitamins and minerals so you're receiving must the same nutrition as regular milk. Give ful fat coco- nut milk in a can a try for baked goods and whipped cream. It is so delicious! 6. Eggless = Cakeless? Never fear, Ener-G Egg Replacer is here! This egg subsitute works great for reci- pes calling for eggs. You won't be able to make angel food or merri- anges, but just about anything else. Flax seed meal is a wonderful egg substitute too! 7. Eating Out? Depending on where you live there are probably vegan options right around the corner. Most Indian and Thai rest- aurants are very accomidating to vegan requests. Just be sure to tell

them you are vegan and mention you'd like for them to hold the dairy (at Indian restaurants) and fish sauce (at Thai restaurants). 8. Rocking the Relatives? So the holidays are over, but there are bound to be parties for some oth- er reason. How do you manage to stay vegan and not freak out the family? Try to bring a dish you've created to the affair and you might be surprised to find out that it's just as picked over as the roast it's sitting next too! 9. Use good oils! Use olive oil to saute your veggies and splurge on some of the more “designer oilsâ€? like walnut and pumpkin seed oil! Also, try adding avac- ado to your diet for some delici- ously, guilt-free fat! 10. Don't give up! Keep pressing on and expanding your horizons to try new recipes and new resta- urants. Becoming vegan is a jour- ney and requires time and will power. But, the improvement in your physical and mental health is worth any so-called sacrifices! MOD

There’s so much to love about terrariums! They add a touch of green to any apartment and look oh so chic, yet they require very little effort and expense. You don't even need a green thumb to maintain them! Once planted, simply mist with water, cover and watch your green house environ- ment come to life. Through the process of conden- sation, your terrarium will create its very own rainforest! What You’ll Need:

• Jar with lid • Sand or small gravel • Potting Soil • Irish Moss (This can be gathered from

the woods, purchased online, or from your local florist) • Small figurine (optional)

Step 3.

Step 1.

Step 2.

Place a small layer of sand or gravel at the base of your jar.

Next add potting soil on top of the sand. Do not mix.

Place your moss on top of the soil and lightly tap, with your fingers, into place.

Step 4.

Step 5.

Result:

Add any decorations you might like: for instance, the skunk figurines shown here.

Mist or drizzle with water and seal with lid. Do not place in direct sunlight. Instead, keep it in moderately low light.

Your finished terrarium should look similar to this.
