Thisreportpresentstheresultsofoureffortstocollectandmanage wastefromtheFezaRiverinNovember2024.Wesuccessfully capturedatotalof120kilogramsofwaste,preventingitfrom reachingtheocean.Thistime,duetoheavyrains,theriverbarrier wasdamagedbutwasquicklyreplacedwiththesupportofThe Recycler,thoughitcauseddelaysinwastecollection.
Ourbarriersuccessfullycapturedatotalof120Kgwaste,asignificant amountofcomposedofgeneralwasteandglassbottles.Alongwith EcoEyewearandTheRecyclerwestrivetobringourworldastep closertohealthieroceansandacleanerfutureforourplanet.
Thedatapresentedinthisreporthighlightsthetypesofwastebeing generatedandcollectedbyTheRecycler;andemphasizestheneed forcontinuouseffortstomitigatepollutioninTanzania'srivers.
InNovember2024,thefloatingbarrierontheFezaRivercaptured120 kilogramsofwaste.Thistablebreaksdownthetypesofwaste collected,sheddinglightonthemostcommonpollutants:
Weobservedthatglassbottlesmakeupasubstantialportionofthe collectedwasteagain,totaling31kg.Additionally,therewere15kgof plainPETbottlesand22kgofcoloredPETbottles.Thesebottlesare widelyusedforbeverages,andtheirpresenceintheriverreflectsa highlocalconsumptionofpackageddrinks.
Wealsorecollected24kgofresidualwasteand13kgof fabricwaste.
Residualwaste(24kg)remainsanessentialcomponent ofthedata.Thisconsistsofeverydaywastesuchas foodwaste.Alsothistimeitformsalargepartofthe collectedwaste.
Otherimpressivedataistheamountofhardplastics andtheLD/HDfilmsthathasbeenfound.Wecollected 7kgofhardplasticsand1kgofLD/HDfilms.
Thepiechartillustratesthe amountofwastecollectedby ourbarrierthatcanbe recycled.Ofthis,90.6%is associatedwiththeuseof drinkingbottles(glassand PET).Thishighlightsthe importanceofproviding alternativestoconsumersand ensuringthatwastecanbe repurposedasavaluable resource.
Theseeffortsfurtherhighlighttheneedtoestablisheffectivewaste managementpracticesandincreaseawareness.Companies shouldplayalargerroleinthecollectionoftheirproducts, particularlythroughEPRschemes.
Moreover,italsoshowsthateducationremainsanvitalkeyto changeconsumerhabitsandavoidcreatingillegalwastecollection points.Thedatashowsthatasignificantportionofthewaste collectedisrecyclable,whichspeakstothepotentialformore robustrecyclinginitiativesinthefuture.
Thevarietyofproductsfoundinthetrashcatcherhighlightstheneedfor amorecoordinatedandunifiedapproachtowastemanagement—one thatactivelyinvolveslocalcommunities,recyclingfacilities, companies,andpublicauthoritiestoestablisharobustand comprehensivewastemanagementsysteminDaresSalaam. Beyondthewasteitself,thedurabilityofwaste-catchinginfrastructure alsoplaysacriticalrole.Normalrainscanincreasewaterpressure, especiallywhenstrongobjectsarecarriedalong,causingrustedwiresto breakandloosenthebarriers.Toaddressthis,regularwirereplacements arecurrentlybeingimplementedaswecontinuetoseekmoredurable long-termsolutions.
EcoEyewear’sinvolvementinthis projectsupportsnotonlywaste collectionbutalsothebroader conversationoncorporate accountabilityand environmentalstewardship.
