BEAUTY

Beyond

Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes and the best part of beauty is that which no picture can express. Nature bequeaths the human race with diverse body shapes in which it pours its very essence bringing matchless and varied beauties into these forms. Women are no less beautiful if they are skinnier or if they have more curves than others. We should never decide if a woman is beautiful or not based on just her body shape. Although, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, we must understand that women are beautiful regardless of their shapes and sizes. The current media eulogize and idolize the skinny look, I personally don't believe that to be perfect. To make matters worse, some women have such skinny body and still consider themselves fat. Most women literally stress over their body size trying to be like the supermodels on social media forgetting that different men have different taste in women. Some are attracted to curves and others are attracted to a slimmer figure. A woman's natural body shape should never be considered a

flaw because no matter what, we are always going to have things about ourselves that we wish we could change, but you should know there are others out there who wish they looked like you. Indeed nature is unashamed and unrestrained in her exhibition of its powers in making the human body as such marvelous assortments of beauty and poise in a delicately balance form and there is no exquisite beauty without some strangeness in the proportion. Whatever shape nature decides to create you in, the true essence of beauty lies within, although it may not be seen or touchable, it very much defines and gives coloration to all forms of beauty all over the world.

COVER STORY

Charis

Agbonlahor

M

y name is Charis Agbonlahor, I’m a professional published model and actress who has been working in the industry for over 6 years. I have representation in the UK, Scandinavia and Germany and have worked all over the world with a range of fantastic well-known brands. I am a curvy, tall, fit and healthy woman, and extremely happy and proud of my body.

Let me share my little well-being secret with you . Two years ago, I visited my doctor after a few months of experiencing chronic back pain and was devastated when I was diagnosed with Arthritis in my spine. The doctor who read my results seemed as surprised as I was that someone as young as myself could have a bone degenerating disease, however he admitted that this is something that he had seen often in young people these days. Photo: @louharvard, Model: @charis_agbonlahor_official

As a striking size 14 woman, I have always found it a struggle between keeping a full figure and maintaining a well-balanced diet, it doesn't mean that I neglect my diet and eat anything that comes my way. Since becoming vegan 7 months ago this is something that I am understanding more and more each day. Much in the same way that skinny models are expected to maintain their slim figure, I too have experienced pressure to increase my fuller figure by being told to ‘Go treat myself to cake’ or ‘Stuff my face’ until I put the pounds on. Being made to feel I should aim at being bigger just to cater for the current fashion fad despite the fact that it may not be healthy for me. 11 www.modelsdigesttrends.com #modtrends

Most Models focused on their outlook and neglect the inside What many people don't understand is that modeling is exhausting. We models do make it look easy most of the time (that's what makes us models). Catwalking all day in stilettos, long hours on flight or standing for 10 hours shooting in all types of weather is exhausting and stressful on the body and dose require a level of good health and fitness.

Photo: @louharvard

Long before my diagnosis, I can remember being told by some clients and industry professionals that I wasn’t big enough for the plus industry. Being eager to work more, I ditched exercising and decided to eat what I want. In doing this, I put on quite amount of weight and weighted about 14 stone which was the highest I’d ever been. I started scoring high fashion gigs and clients seemed to be happy with my fuller curves but I was not. It wasn't because of the way I looked on the outside, I was still looking relatively toned, and being so tall, meant that I was able to carry the weight better or at least makes it look like I was okay. However, internally I didn't realize the damage I was causing myself and a well practiced smile hid the pain that my body was experiencing daily. I was suffering from IBS as well as chronic pain in my spine which made not only work a struggle but also normal everyday living, even getting out of bed win the mornings was difficult on my body and this new gained weight only made things worse. 12 www.modelsdigesttrends.com #modtrends

“Health and wellbeing is something that isn't being addressed properly in the fashion industry

Photo: Faby and Carlo

In trying to keep up with the demands of the industry, I wasn't paying attention to what was going on inside of my body and was only focused on what the outside looked like and how many gigs this was getting me. When this finally took a toll on my body and I realized that the food I was eating was playing a big part in my issues. I started to shift my priorities to look after how I felt on the inside first before the exterior.

I

believe that health and well-being is something that isn't being addressed properly in the fashion industry at the moment. Whilst we go extremes to maintaining body shapes whether being thin or curvy, I feel that there is not enough focus put on healthy eating and awareness of what we are putting into our bodies just as the straight sized models are known for neglecting their health for fashion fads, I was pressured in doing the same but to the other extreme, I'm sure I am not the only one. It's really important for us all to start taking more responsibility for the myths and ideas that we are portraying to people about our bodies and start to consider how poor diets affect not just our external bodies but also the inside.

Don't get me wrong, I am deeply in love with the curve movement, it’s my passion and I am really grateful for the brave women before me who fought for their curves to be celebrated. I wouldn't have had a job if it wasn't for them. However, health and well-being should be the number one priority. It shouldn't really be about size at all, but about health and what the healthy shape is and size for YOU internally not just externally. There are few curve and straight sized models campaigning for health at the moment but I'd love to see more of us showing our followers how important healthy eating and exercise is to our body.

Since going Vegan I've noticed that my back pain has decreased, my IBS symptoms are rare, I feel stronger, my stamina is up, I am more focused than ever , I still stand as a strong size 14 and solid Amazonian woman. I look great but more importantly I feel great! Im not preaching that you go Vegan, although the benefits are incredible, but I am urging you to look after your beautiful body on the inside as you do on the out!

When you are a curvy model and a photographer all you do is to saturate the social media with self - portraits

sha O WAITERS IG: @oshawaiters

I

’ve always been passionate about the arts, from drawing and painting at an early age. My interest in photography began after my mother gave me a polaroid camera when I was seven. During high school I took photography seriously after getting

accepted to take some photography courses at the International Center of Photography. I learned how to use film cameras, develop and print photographs. I loved it so much that I decided to study photography in college.

14 www.modelsdigesttrends.com #modtrends

Being a Model and a Photographer helped me overcome shyness

O

ne thing I’m recognized for is my self-portraits. I’ve been taking self-portraits, since I was sixteen. Because I’m shy and introverted, my outlet for expressing myself was in front of the lens. Fashion and style has a big influence in my life, so I like to document myself wearing her eccentric collection of clothing. I would do my own hair, makeup and style myself into whoever I want to be for the shoot. I really like to capture movement in my photos; the fabric of the garment and my hair creates shapes as it flows with my action poses. When I’m not taking self-portraits, I’m usually taking street style portraits of people who I find interesting. I’ve always been interested in taking portraits of people. I find it ironic because I’m very introverted.

Being shy has made me curious about people and it helps me break out of my shell by approaching them for portraits. What usually catches my attention is the person’s hair or how they express their unique sense of style. I like taking photos of people I don’t see everyday. I also like to capture the people in a way that looks like they know me, so it won’t look like a random stranger that is taking their photo. I believe street photographs are more interesting than having a plain backdrop in a studio. I always use natural light in my work, and manipulate it by setting my camera settings to work with the light that is available. 15 www.modelsdigesttrends.com #modtrends

hether you are taking photos for your portfolio or just for social media post, it is important to plan before the shoot. If you are shooting for your portfolio, you wouldn't want to come out with mediocre or sloppy images, good images enhances your chance of getting a break in the fashion and advertising industry. Before you think of going for a shoot, put in mind the aspect of modeling you are into and choose a concept that suits it. It's inappropriate to have images that don't fit your market.

Find/contact a photographer and be sure to look at the photographer's work and choose the one that is knowledgeable or specialize in the type of images you want. If you are satisfied with his/her work, call and schedule a meeting to discuss the cost and date for the shoot.

When selecting your outfits, choose the right colors, avoid distracting accessories. It’s your portfolio so it should be about YOU.

LeAnne

eAnne J. Mangano, originally from outside of Philadelphia, has been modeling for just a year and half. The family oriented, Political Science graduate fully realized her passion for travel and experiencing other cultures while volunteering in the Peace Corps and living in Botswana. Besides family and travelling, her other major passion in life is stage acting and all things involving the theater. Modeling has become a very personal mission for LeAnne. She states "I take on many roles in my life, Sister, Daughter, Aunt, Youth Leader and Friend. But for me modeling is one of the most important. It allows me to show many people that they are beautiful just as they are. And that a little confidence goes a long way. If I can inspire someone to stand tall and hold their head high, to walk with confidence, to know deep down that it's not the clothes that make them beautiful, they are already beautiful. If I can show women that even someone who looks like them, curvy and round with big arms and jiggly thighs, can wear a bikini and own it. That we can wear a crop top and own it. That all of us can wear what makes us feel beautiful, and own it, no matter what size we are. If I can inspire someone in that way, then I did my job as a model.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HAIR BEFORE YOU GO SWIMMING We've all been waiting for so long to take that first dip in the sea, and it will be hard to take us out of the water anytime soon! But first, let me tell you how to protect your hair before swimming, because sea water and chlorine are harmful to hair.

Don't worry; there is an easy way to enjoy swimming, without having to worry about your hair. Before you jump into the water, wash your hair with tap water first, and then apply your favorite hair oil like argan oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, or olive oil all over your hair. The sea water or chlorine will wash it away eventually, but it will leave a protective coat that will keep your hair safe from dryness and any other damage. For dyed hair, use a UVA sun protection spray to protect the color. Afterwards, while you're taking a shower, using a hydrating conditioner is very important to compensate your hair for any dryness. 26 www.modelsdigesttrends.com #modtrends
