MOBILE NETWORK NOMAS 2013 Design Competition Academic Project Location: Indianapolis, IN Year: 2013 Project Objective: To conserve and respect the existing site context while breathing new life into the previously run-down neighborhood of Kings Park. The approach taken to redevelop the Kings Park area is a Transit Attracting Development or TAD that strengthens the core with community supportive programs such as community farming, sports, commercial services etc. which attract multiple means of transportation to the surrounding community with emphasis on the more environmentally friendly methods such as walking and biking. The building gently rises above the ground blending into the generally low heights of the surrounding buildings which ultimately creates an inviting environment for visitors to the area. The different nodes of the building signify the different programs represented in the facility. Professor in charge: Charles Brown Competition Design Team: Modupeola Thomas, Patrycja Dragan, Tom Ishida, Yiyang Ming, Olivia Bolton, Lei Yang and Jiao Song Contribution: Site analysis, final design proposal, physical model building

MAKING WHOLE NOMAS 2014 Design Competition Academic Project Location: Divine Lorraine Hotel, Philadelphia, PA Year: 2014 Project Objective: To design a youth based facility that will “fundamentally change lives. The design should generate a redevelopment plan that incorporates historic preservation of the existing Divine Lorraine Hotel, adaptive reuse, and sustainability metrics. Drawing heavily on the concept of multiple intelligences, the design intent is to create clusters of spaces for different activities accommodating various programs across these intelligences. A void space that extends from the existing hotel courtyard and ties back to the larger urban context organizes the program and creates paths and landscapes through these different spaces. The new Diving Lorraine campus is a place of healing for children and families that were once broken to be made whole again. Professor in charge: Charles Brown Competition Design Team: Modupeola Thomas, Nasim Daryaee, Joseph Vizurraga, Olivia Bolton, Chelsea Cole, Kelsey Alex, Rolando Lopez. Contribution: Site analysis: GIS mapping, data anaylysys and programming, presentation diagrams

FLUID OBSTRUCTOR Academic Project Location: Chain of Rocks Bridge, Mississippi River, St. Louis, MO Year: 2013 Professor: Derek Hoeferlin Prohect Objective: Design an observatory for a scientist on the Chain of Rocks Bridge for the observation of flowing water through man-made and natual obstructions in the Mississippi River. Investigation models comprising of four different surface types with pyramid- shaped geometries fused to them are used to study the way varying volumes of water react when obstructed by these geometries. The pyramids play the role of the obstructions in this study, so the same design language is employed when designing the observatory for the scientist on the bridge. The observatory takes the form of fused pyramids growing from the bridge down to the bottom of the Mississippi River below it. The living and working space for the scientist is connected to the bridge, while the other parts below the bridge serve as obstructions to the flow of the river water which is the focus of the scientists’ study.

DESERT MUSEUM Academic Project Location: Palm Springs, CA Year: 2014 Professor: Stephen Leet Project Obejective: Design a permanent exhibition museum for the works of the artist, Alberto Burri in the desert landscape of Palm Springs, California. The design of the museum is an open floor plan with angled slits in the external walls which provide a panoramic view of the dramatic desert landscape as a person moves around the gallery. These slits also allow natural light to fill the space while shielding the artworks from the harsh desert sun. The slits are inspired by geometries from the artists’ works.

KEDI

Korean Educational Development Institute Professional Project Location: Jincheon, Korea Type: Institutional Client: South Korean Government Year: 2012 Project Objective: The new research facility for KEDI is an active building in a picturesque landscape that responds to the urban edge to the north and wooded landscape to the south of Jincheon. The project was conceived as a lens that absorbs and magnifies light and views internally and externally. The KEDI project concept was developed through Jacques Lacan’s psychoanalytical theory of the “Mirror Stage” and the “Three Stages of Human Development.” This theory and strategy was the vehicle for the concept of an Educational Development and how architecture transforms and reflects the programmatic conditions. The floor plates are designed as continuous landscapes that perform as a mat typology with hyper sections. These thin layers become infrastructural and programmatically dense. The building is cladded with Fresnel Glass that allows spatial distortion within the perception of the viewers from inside and outside. The lens-like skin also allows light to penetrate into the depth of the building to achieve spatial transparency. Firm: Axi:Ome Principals in Charge: Heather Woofter and Sung Ho Kim Project Designers: Jaymon Diaz and Catty Dan Zhang Design Team: Modupeola Thomas, Chris Liao, Xuanchen Zhang, Zhengyang Wang, Uros Stanojevic, Adam Novack, Tianhui Hou and Davis Owen Contribution: prototyping and final model building

URBAN FOREST Professional Project Location: Shanghai, China Type: Housing Unbuilt Client: Aidong Zhang Architect Year: 2013 Project Objective: The Urban Forest project is part of the growing phenomenon of infrastructure and development in suburban areas outside of Shanghai, China, where large zones of land are quickly turned over in speculative housing and retail. The project maintains the natural ground plane as much as possible by building areas that sit on an infrastructure platform 2 to 4 stories high with housing and office blocks interfacing with the base. The parking and multiple retail and business layers allow for the uninterrupted continuation of the urban fabric into the spatial organizations. The floors, slabs and other building features can also be considered as an extension and continuity of the landscape. The Urban Forest spreads horizontally and vertically to create a more planted urbanism with dependent spatial organizations. Firm: Axi:Ome Principals in Charge: Heather Woofter and Sung Ho Kim Design Principal: Catty Dan Zhang Project Designers: Jaymon Diaz and Dimitris Gourdoukis Design Team: Modupeola Thomas, Tim Scolarici, Chris Liao, Xuanchen Zhang, Alex Kim and Zhengyang Wang Contribution: prototyping and final model building

COCA EXPANSION Professional Project Location: St. Louis, MO, USA Type: Institutional Client: Center of Creative Arts Year: 2014, Work in Progress Project Objective: In Mendelsohn’s early plans,we find the gathering of educational spaces across the garden from the assembly spaces. In the garden’s interior is a library and kindergarten within which the children would be placed at the building’s center; framed by light and views to the natural surroundings. These basic principles guided the interpretation of the proposed renovation by considering the project a protected campus of natural and social spaces organized around the center court consisting of a playground on the upper level and an assembly space on the lower level. The structure of the courtyard serves as an opportunity for exterior and interior performance space to provide multiple types of performance and educational classrooms. In addition, COCA is an anchor in the urban life of the neighborhood. The scale of the proposed addition responds to the neighborhood and also restores the relationship of the curved roof to façadeon the eastern edge of the original Mendelsohn building. Stretching out to the natural limits of this urban and suburban site, the proposed plan integrates program spaces of various sizes, including a theater and black box connection and exposes the learning process of arts education to families that support their child’s pursuit of expressive communication through art.
