WELCOME TO OUR BIG ALUMNI REUNION This is an engaging opportunity for you and your family to join staff, students and alumni back on campus for a weekend of free events and nostalgia in celebration of Aston University’s 50th anniversary. The theme of the reunion is ‘Transforming Lives’, and we have some exciting workshops, talks and other events planned to showcase Aston’s pioneering approach to some of the world’s toughest challenges.

Let our health experts introduce you to state-of-the-art labs and demystify topics such as nutrition, diabetes and the workings of the human brain. Visit our linguists for a taste of distant cultures and cuisines, or learn from our experts in global politics. Join our engineers in interactive workshops and find out how Aston turns waste into energy. Meet entrepreneurial staff and students from Aston Business School, who will give you the inside track on current trends. Or just come back and see the transformation of campus, network with friends (old and new) and help us to celebrate 50 fantastic years of innovation.

We look forward to seeing you all back on campus!

ADAPTING TO DIVERSITY Our societies are defined by difference and diversity. Some argue this diversity brings disharmony, others that it fosters tolerance and mutual respect. In this lecture, Professor Richard Crisp will discuss the psychological science that changes the parameters of this debate. He will show how understanding ‘the social mind’ can help to promote intercultural exchange, and how, in turn, this can have benefits that extend beyond intercultural relations, enhancing individuals’ confidence, creativity, productivity and performance.

MADE TO SERVE

Professor Tim Baines

12.00-12.45 Susan Cadbury Lecture Theatre Aston Business School

Manufacturers made things and service companies did things for us. Today we realise that these distinctions are artificial and that services can be a high-value strategy for manufacturers. Servitization (technology-enabled services) is about manufacturers (technology innovators) offering services that are tightly coupled to their products. Professor Tim Baines will explain how, by seeing themselves as service providers, manufacturers can exploit the intellectual property arising from design to deliver and improve business processes for their customers.

LIGHTING THE WAY Harnessing light in the 21st Century

SATURDAY 12.00 – 12.45

15.30 – 16.15

Light is one of our basic needs, nourishing and regulating the lives of organisms on or near the planet’s surface. But light is so much more to us than just a biological necessity. It is also a conduit for information in an increasingly networked world. In addition to forming the backbone of the Internet, light is revolutionising manufacturing, healthcare, lighting, displays and sensing. The Deputy Director of Aston Institute of Photonics Technologies, Professor David Webb, will explain what is happening in these areas and will showcase the pioneering contributions being made at Aston.

LIGHTING THE WAY Harnessing light in the 21st Century Light is one of our basic needs, nourishing and regulating the lives of organisms on or near the planet’s surface. 11.00-11.45 The Wright Lecture Theatre, Main Building

THE SKILLS GAME Games and Computational thinking

SUNDAY 11.00-11.45

For many, learning to program is the first introduction to computational thinking but are there alternatives? Dr Errol Thompson from Computer Science looks at the way strategy games can be used to explore and develop computational thinking skills. 11.00-11.45 M241
