THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

ABOUT UNI

06

www.aston.ac.uk

KNOW THESE SIX THINGS AND YOU’LL BE READY RIGHT FROM THE START. 1

You can study more than one subject

2

It’s not all about lectures

3

You can get a job while studying

4

Your timetable will be flexible

5

You don’t have to stay local

6

You’ll meet people. Lots of people

You can go all in on the one subject you love or spread your bets. Joint honours courses allow you to combine modules to create one degree.

Sure, there will be lectures and classed based learning, but a lot of study is self-led. This will involve trips to the library. Depending on the subject, you can also find yourself in the lab a few days a week.

A lot of universities offer a student jobs service, helping you find temporary, flexible work while studying. It’s a good way to enjoy the social side of uni.

Usually, all students have Wednesday afternoon off to get involved with societies and sports. You will also have a lot more free periods than at college for self-led study.

The best university for your subject may be outside your home town. Universities make it easy to live on campus, providing fully furnished study bedrooms with shared kitchens.

Whatever the route you take, you’ll meet people along the way. Some of these will become friends that you keep in touch with long into your career after university.

TUITION FEE LOANS

Tuition fees cover the cost of studying. The money goes straight to your university, so you won’t see it.

MAINTENANCE LOANS Covers the costs of living, such as rent, bills, food, socialising and clothes. This money goes into your account, so spend it wisely.

BURSARIES AND SCHOLARSHIPS

Most universities also offer bursaries and scholarships to some students. This is money to help with your living costs and doesn’t need to be paid back.

14

www.aston.ac.uk Year 13 Submit your university application and apply for student finance. Revise for your final exams.

Year 12 Start researching careers and universities. Attend university open days and UCAS fairs to find out which university and course is right for you.

Year 11 Concentrate on getting the best GCSEs you can. Select your Further Education choices – A Levels, BTECs or equivalent – that will help you get on to the course or the job you want.

Year 10 Work hard to do well at your GCSEs – universities will look at your grades, and most need English and Maths. Start getting work experience to build up your skills.

Year 8/9 Choose which GCSEs you would like to study. Your GCSEs can affect your future options, so try to choose a good range of subjects that you enjoy.
